Since the only designs used to cut these are reputation rewards from the Scale of Sands faction (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/faction=990) which are associated with Mount Hyjal I find it most likely these gems will drop only in (you guessed it) Mount Hyjal.

After killing Anetheron (2nd boss of Hyjal) 5 mines spawned each with 1 epic gem in them and the usual blue/green gems. Once I get some more info on this ill update what they can be mined from. Possibly after completing each section of Hyjal these spawn? Not sure.

Considering it drops in the Black Temple, Illidans current hideout, it can be assumed this is named after Maiev Shadowsong, Illidans former jailor.

Just speculating, though.

After 2.4 patch, some raid bosses like Magtheridon drop a gem pack when killed. Shadowsong Amethyst is one of the gems that has a change to be inside that bag.

Is this the most rare of the epic gems, i need two for the shadowsong panther figurine trinket and they seem to be absolutely ridiculously expensive on my server compared to the other epic gems.

Prior to 2.4, this gem could only be found in Hyjal Notes and BT Trash.

As of 2.4 this gem is also available from...

The Black Sack of Gems which drops from Magtheridon (100% drop chance, and contains three epic gems and two rare gems).
Shaani, an SSO NPC that spawns in Phase Three, in exchange for 15 Badges of Justice

Got this from my very first Brilliant Glass this afternoon after patch. Only sells for 525g atm in AH, so imma have to wait to sell that puppy
