Considering there are 3 other armor/stam/defense rings before this one of similar quality, I think this upgrade is very small. I'd be inclined to pass on Mag's head for other roles that could use their ring more. Here are the tanking ring other options:

Ring of Unyielding Force and Violet Signet of the Great Protector are both definitely better than this, and certainly easier to obtain. If you're a serious tank, you'll probably have both of those before you have a chance at this one, so I don't see what the point of taking this thing for tanking is. Either turn it into dps or don't take it at all.

This is so much better for druids than for warriors.

Any warrior doing Magtheridon and tanking has already the Violet Eye Exalted Signet and the Shermanar Ring from Aran, both better for warriors than this one.

Not neccesarily. Although defense does provide a bonus to dodge for druids (and all other avoidance stats for the other tanking classes), it is rather small. Resilience will give you more crit immunity point-for-point than defense, and is relatively easy to find in large amounts.

This basically means if you have to pick between resilience and defense on any one item go for defense, but use resilience to "patch holes" on your itemization if you find yourself lacking defense to reach crit immunity, especially if it allows you to re-gem/enchant other pieces of gear :-)
This is much more noticeable at high raiding in TBC content and less of a concern if you are only just starting Karazhan, for example.

This ring is godly, although 60 badges will get you a "better" ring from the new Sunwell item vendor, as long as you can maintain crit immunity, and is a far better option for ferals than the DPS ring in the long-run.

Given our guilds first Gruul's kill, as a paladin main tank, I passed on this item to the casters.

I can see many better or equivalent tanking rings that are quite easily available:
1) Violet Signet of the Great Protector
2) Ring of the Stalwart Protector
3) Shermanar Great-Ring
4) Ring of Unyielding Force
5) Signet of the Last Defender
