This shield has more stamina and avoidance than any other shield up to the 25-man drop Aldori Legacy Defender (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=28825).

It may lack 100-300 armor and some minor block value, but for pure avoidance, this shield is it. The following shields have less stamina AND avoidance, even with blue-quality socketed gems.

Over 20 runs of hellmaw (not always the full instance, just him), and I have yet to see it drop, just those dang boots. Its a good thing he can be 4 manned easily and 3 manned with the right combination.

It took me about 12 runs to finally get this shield. Unfortunately Blizzard's Warrior itemization pre-endgame is quite poor and this is one of three relatively easy to access shields. The others being the Nethergaurd and the shield off of the botanist in Botanica.

If what Kylen said is true ("This shield has more stamina and avoidance than any other shield...") than it makes me happy. I use this shield and love it. The pure + stamina and + Def. rating is exactly what tanks need. Slap +18 block enchant on it or +18 stamina and you're ready to tank until the cows come home. Looks pretty sweet too. Drops off first boss in Shad. Labs which is fairly easy to get to and kill.

Augh, I've killed this boss about 20 times now but it has never dropped for me. This item needs a higher drop rate.

IMO this is the best pre-raid (as in blue) tanking shield.

STA and DEF are great but you seem to overlook the AC and BV on the epic ones.

For instance the Coldarra currently has -2 sta and -2 def rating which translate into -20 hit points and almost -1 def skill. However it has +957 AC and +65 block value. Suppose you have 14k AC with Coldarra compared to 13k AC with Valorous, if you consider a 2k hit (which is nothing nowadays) then the extra AC will absorb an extra 35 damage if u think of a 10K hit then we talk of an extra 175 damage that is absorbed.

Now consider the number of hits you get on a boss fight and you can see that the wooping 2 STA extra of the Valorous won't take u far compared with the extra damage reduction per hit due to the greater AC on the Coldarra.

The block values speak for itself about the extra damage absorbed when a block occurs not to mention the extra damage and threat from the shield slam that scales with block value.

Bottom line, the Valorous is a great piece of a shield but it is no real match for the epix shown above once you are in position to obtain one of them.

I've ran Shadow who knows how many times and this has never dropped a single flippin' time. This shield is just for those that want the defense cap and some extra stamina, specially with that 18+ enchant. I'm currently tanking with the mana tombs shield till it drops :(

Aegis of the Sunbird (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=28316 ) arguably still seems to have it beat unless you have some desperate itemization issues. Slightly less stam and def, but if you're doing well on blues, and looking to step into Karazhan, you'll want Aegis over this one pretty much any day. Simply for the block.

Like a friend of mine advised, it's sexy to go for pure avoidance, but the art of tanking is predicting exactly what kind of damage you'll be taking, consistently, instead of relying on chance. Even if maximizing the likelihood of avoiding a hit is great. Also, this shield won't get you very far in terms of becoming uncrushable, given what it's up against.

If you're gonna be negative, you could call Aegis a more exhaustive grind perhaps, but Botanica is still pretty fast if you stay on your feet, and it will be the optimal choice for starting Karazhan if your gear is where it should be. Personally I hated the fact that this shield (Platinum) dropped from the first boss of a dark and gloomy trash-excessive instance, and I'd have to rely solely on my ethics to tag along for the rest.

Unless you got the rep for Crest of the Sha'tar (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=29176 ) or the badges to sport the superior purples, this should only be considered a secondary option in my oppinion.

I personally upgraded my own Aegis by doing Nightbane, but for that hour or so, it served me rather well!

I would say that the Ogri'la Aegis(https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=32652) is the easiest and best tank shield to get and it will last till Hyjal or BT:

Does this shield... growl at you? Ever since I equipped mine once in a while I'll hear what sounds like a %^&*ed-off demon, even when there are no demons around. It started shortly after I equipped this shield in Botannica.

Edit: Disregard this post please. I got this shield shortly after 2.4 came out and didn't put the connection together - the sound effect for the warrior skill Bloodrage has changed to add that demonic growl to it whenever you use the skill, and I only turned my sound on about 20 minutes after I got the shield, hence my confusion.

Rep reward from Shattered Sun Offensive, and even though it requires exalted status the rep goes very quickly as there are so many dailies to do, no instance grinding, etc.

If u want a shield thats a crap load easier to get and is probably better than this thing, Start the Quest chain in Shadowmoon Valley:: https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=10804/好心, which will give u https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/search?q=Netherwing%20Protector's%20Shield. You lose a little stam and def skill, but u gain +block and agility. Ive ran Shadowlabs im about 12k revered and havent seen it. Up to you.

( FORM GRPS ONLY FOR THE FIRST BOSS, (less time wasted by waiting the whole excruciating 2-4 hr shadow labs, and more time spent on having chances at it, its what i did , a grp of freinds willing to do this is awsome)

U can easily make it to the dude in less then 15 mins and hes a tank and spank so even easier, and ask your freinds for back to back runs of him.

I got mine in a day .. with 4 full sl runs and the rest were all first boss>> reset >> first boss.. over the coruse of the whole day.. taking some breaks.

One more: If you ever get tired of running sl, theres a better sheild in BOTANICA.. ( imo its better) i dident have this option since i dident have a flying mount, this sheild is

This shield is pissing me off totally, and just looking at it makes me wanna /cry!
It just won't drop no matter how many times I go... People who have gone 17 or so times count yourself lucky.... I have ran SL 50 maybe even more times for this one drop, and still not dropped.... But I am a vigilant soul, I shall rape that place until I get it xD

if you wanna do lower city heroics, get revered. if the sheild doesnt drop on revered status just don't bother. i gave up at exhalted and ran mech for 2 days and got the epic 1. used the smv sheild while doing it.

Took forever to complete this instance but we cleared it first try. Did the 1st boss (Hellmaw) last because of convenience and this dropped for me, level 70 Gnome Warrior. This almost single handedly put me in my guilds 1st Kara raid group.

Platinum Shield of the Valorous seems the easier of these 2 shields to get, its off the first boss in Slabs which takes less than 20 minutes to get to, who (when your faction has terrokar towers controlled) drops 2 spirit shards so it is possible to find groups to farm the boss.

Sunbird Aegis is off 2nd boss in Botanica, which requires everyone to have a flying mount and requires a more complicated boss fight who generally takes longer to get to.

Both have pretty crappy droprates around 10%.

Both have good stats for pre-Kara/pre-Herioc reward shields.

Once you get EITHER.....bothering for the other shield for the 1% better stats is stupid and a waste of time.....

ANYONE WILLING TO RUN BOT 20 TIMES FOR A BIT OF SHIELD BLOCK OVER VALOROUS NEEDS TO RETHINK THEIR LIFE.

btw i'm not gonna farm for the Aegis, i'll try directly to take Crest of the Sha'tar, and then Merciless Gladiator Shield.

I've had this shield for a while now, and it's a goodie! However, I wouldn't run SLabs over and over trying to get this (got it on my 2nd or 3rd run) shield when you can easily grind rep with Sha'tar in Mechanar/Botanica/Arcatraz to get the Crest of the Sha'tar (http://thottbott.com/i29176), which is much better for advanced tanking.

Some might think the +24 DR and +33 Stam of this outweigh the +13 DR and +19 Stam of the Crest. However, you get two sockets in the Crest and can easily pick up another 18 Stam there with two +9 gems. The 11 Defense Rating you sacrifice isn't much...about 4 total Defense Skill. You can/should be able to make that up elsewhere without a problem.

i ran this instance at least 10 times with my Protec Warrior, and this shield never dropped. Then i start the key frag quest chain with my Hunter,(Protec Pali as tank)and low and behold it drops the first time, Pali gets the warrior shield....go figure One sad Hunter...Elvanstorm...Muradin server

As a 70 warrior looking for gear before kara i have been in Shadow Labrynth about 40 times looking for this shield, the Adamentite Figurine, and the Bold Shoulders. So far i havent got 1 thing. so technically they need to change the drop rates on tanking gear because all those bosses ever drop is cloth and healadin crap

Ok ive got 4 level 70 chars and now im doing this instance with my 69 paladin protection. Some stuff in this game has a #$%^&*ed droprate for sure. First it was the MT shield, 25 runs not seen it. Looking at other posts here it seems i have to go some runs here aswell.

Anyhow why i posted about my other characters i had my reasons. To be honest i didnt even know that this boss dropped a shield, becasue ive never seen it before. Im exalted Lower City with a druid and mage, mostly rep gained in SL.

Im thinking it might be smarter to farm Botanica for Sunbird Aegis instead. Atleast then if i dont get it before im exalted with Shatar i can buy Crest of the Shatar instead.
Lower City reputation seems more or less useless for a warrior and paladin tank anyhow.

I finished the chain up to Zuluhed the Whacked last night. Almost got into group, but someone beat me to it. Couldn't get one, so I just went ahead and continued working on other quests looking for group for Shadow Labs to complete the 4 quests I had. And guess what, the Platinum Shield of the Valorous dropped. Didn't expect it. Read through the Dungeon book before and I don't remember seeing the shield as a drop. I'll have to check it out. Well, it brought my defense up to 496, and with +18 stamina on it, brings my stamina to almost 12k. Now I can work on changing some sockets around to bring my spell hit/dmg/crit and int up.

I really lucked out, because I the only other time I went into Shadow Labs about a month ago broke up at the first boss. And I didn't have any luck getting group until last night. Woot woot!

Now on to working on upgrading some other gear.

I was just checking out upgrade of my shield and this one is 7th from the top the list as far as stamina and defense stats. Well, check out this legendary. It got me drooling! On my wish list for Christmas!
