In case it's not obvious from the maps of the Mana Thistle world object (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=181281), this herb grows exclusively in places only accessible by flying mount. (Well, you can port to Socrethar's island in Netherstorm, but only during a quest line that's level 70 anyway.)

I'm standing right in front of a mana thistle at Forge Camp: Wrath in Blades Edge Mountains. Never seen one anywhere except above Shat City, but I guess they grow elswhere =)

Since the 2.4.0 patch, this plant can also be gathered in the Isle of Quel'Danas, in the front of Sunwell Plateau. Like other zones, it seems that only 2 spots can be spawned at the same time.

Nightmare Vine can be found at the back, in the dead scare, but the area is full of undeads.

Gathering Mana Thistle will give you mana (spell).
Mana gain varies from 500 to 3500.

I am an alchemist 372/375, have a number of potions my guild can use that requires these, i can always buy them but would prefer to gather, anyone know where they grow? is it only in certain instances like ancient lichen?

When you pick mana thistle it restores around 1k mana.

Mana thistle is used in all Outland flasks and all Protection potions (fire, arcane, etc), much like Dreamfoil is used in all pre-BC flasks. It is found only in areas accessible by flying mount, with the exception being Sunwell Island.

Anyone know what the buff it gives when picked is? My herbalist is a warrior so nothing comes up.

NW of the 2 forge bases in Netherstorm I can normally find 2 of these and 2 dreaming glory. I haven't tested the respawn rate, but it's probably long. I come back every day or so, whenever I stop by to do Tempest Keep.

Where else can it be found, specifically?

A flying mount is NOT required to get to the island in the northwest of Netherstorm where these spawn. If you get the quest to kill the boss on the island, you can teleport to the island before 70. I definately talked to a lvl69 Draenei shaman who did exactly this.

When you pick this herb it replenishes a good deal of your mana. I'm thinking it was around 4k...

Besides making flasks or a few other things with Mana Thistle... this stuff has small value right now (at least on the 'newer' server that I'm on).

Can't sell it for even 8 gold a stack.

Not many are making the 'great' flasks due to the extreme amount of either Silversage, Nightmare Vine or Dreamfoil required...so there sits the Mana Thistle...by the stack full in the bank.

It's kind of like the Ghost Mushroom of pre xpack...

your opinions may vary. Personaly, I would rather make a profit on making other elixirs

You need it for both flasks and protection potions - just like Dreamfoil...

It's not that hard to farm once you get to know the places where it spawns.

First of all, you need a flying mount and you need herbalism skill to be maxed at 375, if you dont have these prerequisites just forget about collecting this herb.

Shadowmoon: big floating island in the south-east corner of the map, after patrolling that place for a couple of weeks i found 12 spawn points of mana thistle (more or less), but never more than 2 spawn points with herbs at any time, this is quite peculiar, i think is some sort of limitation built-in by blizzard to reduce the chance that someone will get there and empty a zone completely. If you get both spawns, you can move further and be reasonably sure that for the next 30-40 minutes nothing is going to come out.

Terokkar forest: big lake in the south-east corner of the map (Vel Skettis is the name), i found 4 spawning points there. This is by far the hardest place where to farm the herb, 2 of the spawning points are in the middle of crowded villages, mobs are level 70 and is easy to pull adds, there are also two level 71 elite giants patrolling the border of the lake, beware.
EDIT: The birds village just outside Shattrath (north west of town) has 4-6 spawns, this is very easy to reach and always worth a visit.

Blade's Edge mountain: i was fliyng to Netherstorm and i found one spawn of mana thistle on the raised plateu that is located in the top north of the map.
EDIT: i located two additional spawns in the high grounds that are in the W/SW side of the map you will recognize the area because the ground there is dark and there are legion demons all around.

Netherstorm: like some other poster said, the little floating island in the north-west of the map is the place you want to go, i found 6 spawns of mana thistle there so far, all of them can be cleared avoiding the patrolling mobs and flying out, like on the island in shadowmoon i never found more than two spawns with herbs at any time here.
As a separate note when you arrive in Stormspire don't forget to visit the herb vendor there Dealer Sadaqat "Potent Potables", the guy has herbs (Mana Thistle 1g a piece) and potions in limited supply.

Other peculiarity i noted about mana-thistle is that i never managed to collect 3x of those, usually 1 and at times 2.
Collecting the herb will replenish your mana pool by a variable amount, at times i got also 3k mana back.
Mana thistle is the top-end herb and is needed for all the biggest flasks that alchemists discover randomly while they are making other potions or elixirs. Normally will be used in quantities of 10 pieces per flask.

ya im not sure how it spawns..i have a 20 stack, goin for 40g on AH now, but i think will be much more soon. all the major prot pots neeed it..and so do flasks..ima stack n stack them now, while they are hard to get, rather than later when they will be impossible.

Blizz is lowering the respawn time for most plants in outland and increasing the chance to find a fel lotus by 15%(or to 15%?)but is also slashing the effectiveness of flasks to a third and some elixers and potions are affected as well as to be less powerful then flasks (flask of relentless assault=120 attack power fel strength potion=90 and also only lowers 10 stamina now with the previous effect being 120 attack power and 20 stamina)
If you are gathering these to make flasks then just stop and sell them now you will get a hugely decreased price as soon as this next patch comes out because elixers will be nearly as good
Edit new cauldrons are also cominng out "devices" that a whole party(raid?)can take XXXX protection potions out of the cost however will be much larger for them but will be a savings to making a potion for everyone in both bag space and money
These will require mana thistles (7) 2 primals which ones depending on the cauldron and a fel iron casing(made by engineers)
If you are an intensive raider you may want to start farming primals and mana thistles for this

I know there is at least 1 location on the map that doesn't require a flying mount for you to pick this.

I know this because my friend, a 69 Warrior, picks herbs and sends them to me for my Alchemy, and he sent me 2 Mana Thistle, and I was surprised.

I don't know the location, I'll let you know once I find out.

ok. I surprisingly found 6 mana thistles just northeast of shatt city where the orges are...you may need a flying mount (thats how i got there) but perhaps you can find a way to walk up ...the cords are 21.15 in terrokar forest the place is called barrier hills...watch out lots of 70-72 mobs ( and an elite 70) but don't let that discourge you these herbs are worth the run...flying mount is easier...just plop down..pick..and then fly off again to next one.

Tellin u this now as its worthless after 2.2: If u can solo the elite trees up in Skettis (there are 4 gaurdin the area) u will make all the mana thistle ull ever need by herbin them, aswell as dreaming glory, felweed, terocone and anchient lichen. If u do it long enough ull get the odd black lotus drop aswell. Its rumored that after 2.2 u wont be able to herb em anymore.
Locks, spriests and frost mages do it rather quick and easy.

If you fall off a cliff and die close enough to the cemetery in the Barrier Hills, you will rez there. The cemetery is around 22,4 in Terrokar. Can't say exactly where you should die. I found this way up without being able to fly, (I fell off a cliff by accident, while trying to find a climbing path up). Happy to find there was an unguarded mana thistle just outside the cemetery, as well. :)

In the Barrier Hills behind Aldor Rise in Shatt city there is a village of ogres. I just spent 45 minutes circling the village and came out with 15 Mana Thistles and 5 Dreaming Glory. They never respawned in the same place twice during that time. I finally got bored and left. Depending on whether other people are farming it seems to be a prime location.

the best way to farm this is dont, just go farm a primal air instead and sell that to fund a mana thistle.
