Feral Druid Tank Pre-Patch Best in Slot Gear - Wrath of the Lich King Classic

Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Pre-Patch Sunwell Plateau for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from raids, dungeons, PvP, professions, BoE World drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Feral Druid Tank in Pre-Patch
Gearing for Feral tanks in the WotLK pre-patch is very similar overall to Phase 5 of TBC Classic, with just a new notable differences. First, due to nerfs in how the
巨熊形態
and
厚皮
armor multipliers are implemented in WotLK, bonus (green) armor on weapons, cloaks, and jewelry is now
7 times less valuable
than the base (white) armor found on leather gear. This means that items like

, which were insanely valuable for bears in TBC due to their inflated armor budget, become very mediocre in the pre-patch since their bonus armor no longer scales with

and talents. Along the same lines, bonus armor on all PvE leather gear itemized for Feral Druids is completely removed in the pre-patch, and the armor values will match those on "Rogue gear" of the same item level. For example,

In practice, this will not impact itemization for bears all that much, since even the nerfed Feral-itemized leather is typically better for tanking than available alternatives due to its higher Stamina allocation. The one notable exception to this is the helm slot, where the "Rogue helm"

will outperform the "Feral helm"

in the pre-patch due to this bonus armor nerf.
Second, Ferals in the pre-patch will no longer to need to worry about optimizing for crit immunity in tanking sets. This is because the new version of the

talent makes all bears uncrittable by raid bosses even without any gear equipped. As a result, Resilience Rating is now a worthless tanking stat for bears in PvE, and Defense Rating is only valuable for the avoidance it provides.
Finally, the value of avoidance stats, especially Agility, plummets in the WotLK pre-patch compared to prior TBC phases. This is because WotLK introduces a mechanic called
diminishing returns
on all avoidance stats in order to counteract a fundamental scaling issue with avoidance in prior expansions. In TBC, avoidance stats exhibited
increasing returns
in their value: each additional 1% Dodge provided more value for tank survival than the previous. This resulted in tanks (especially high avoidance tanks like Feral Druids) scaling far better with gear than desired, so much so that the

aura needed to be implemented so that mitigation gear would continue to be relevant for tanks at the end of the expansion. In WotLK, avoidance stats have been re-worked so that each point in Defense Rating, Dodge Rating, and Agility provides less of a % Dodge and % Miss increase than the previous in order to counteract this effect. In the pre-patch specifically, this means that 47% Dodge from gear in a typical bear mitigation set ends up providing only 34% Dodge after diminishing returns. As a result, Agility becomes much less efficient for improving tank survivability than Stamina, and even aggressively skewed tanking sets should pretty much exclusively gem for Stamina moving forward.
With these gearing differences in mind, the two embedded sets below showcase the highest overall value gear configurations that can be assembled for bear tanking during the pre-patch. The first set was optimized with a conservative survivability skew, and should be your default choice when tanking hard hitting

Compared to our recommended mit skewed BiS setup from Phase 5 of TBC, the notable differences are:

The second example gear set below is a much more aggressive configuration, with survivability down-weighted relative to TPS and DPS. This type of aggressive skew is appropriate for tanking trash packs in

, or raid bosses in old content that you over-gear. As a result, a number of more offensive itemization changes are made from the mit skewed set above:
Since the aggressive gear set is primarily intended for tanking trash, it is optimized around the reduced Hit and Expertise caps against level 72 mobs (6% Hit and 24 Expertise, respectively). As a result, your melee attacks and special abilities will have a 100% success rate against all trash mobs (as well as humanoid adds in the
encounter) when wearing this set. For the same reason, this set retains one "old" Tier 6 piece from
黑暗神廟
/
海加爾山
(the optimal choice being the shoulders) in order to activate the 4-piece

set bonus, which continues to scale well for TPS and DPS value on trash packs in the pre-patch, especially since

A little correction on the armor subject. Cloaks are considered cloth items and still benefit from armor multiplication from bear form. Only jewellry/weapons is nerfed.
