If you just want to dash in and get the scroll, then take off, you might have some ways of dealing with the elites, depending on your class.

Priests can use psychic scream

Warriors can use intimidating shout

Mages, depending on how good your timing is, might be able to get away with using frost nova

Hunters and Warlocks may be able to get away with distracting the mobs with their pet long enough to grab the item and make a getaway

Completing this quest will allow you to turn in various items in return for reputation with the Thorium Brotherhood, that when high enough allows you to buy various crafting recipes.

The first turn-in quests:

The turn-in quests are level 60, and if you have problems with this quest, you can just wait until you're in your high 50's and grab the plans without aggroing the the nearby mobs, as they will be gray to you.

On the other hand, the nearby elite, Maltorius, is also a target of the quest WANTED: Overseer Maltorius (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=7701), so you might want to kill him anyway.

Soloed as a lvl49 mage:
Sheep Overseer Maltorius, Frost Nova the other two and blink to the Plans. Jumped down the valley afterwards.

Just be prepared i case Polymorph or Frost Nova gets resisted.

Enter the cave for the Secret Plans: Fiery Flux @ 49,46. Stay to the left and don't fall ;D. Becarful of the elites, on the balcony part.. If your in a group might as well do https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=7701 as well

A rogue with imp gouge can solo this... barely.

Sap the overseer, blind one of the sentries, then stand right next to the plans and gouge the other sentry. RIGHT after you gouge, loot the plans. You have to be extremely quick, as the gouge will last almost exactly the same amount of time as it takes for you to open the plans. Popping evasion before gouging might help - if the sentry breaks gouge before you finish, you won't get interrupted if you dodge (I think). Then just vanish and be on your way ;)

I was able to have my pet draw aggro, then I ran up, collected the plans, and jumped off the edge to the pit below. Pet died but not me!

The Slag Pit is the second cave from the left for those of you without co-ords. The plans are behind 3 elites on a balcony. They're not soloable unless you plan to grab the plans and make a quick escape.

The easiest way I found to get in was to go in the far right cave, run across the bridge and thru the big room and to the left.

These guys are impossible to kill, I tried as a 55 druid but failed miserably doing little damage.

Did it quite easily as 53 hunter, send your pet to its death but make sure you hit mend pet before he goes, that way he will be getting healed while he is dying and gives you more time to grab plans and get out.

It is definitely recommended that you also pick up the quest to kill the Taskmasters and Slavers, which is JOB OPPORTUNITY: Culling the Competition (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=7729). You will see plenty of them along the way to the plans.

Also, I see now that it's a good idea to pick up Forging the Shaft from Kalaran Windblade. It's the second quest he gives you (the first one is pretty easy to do), and he can be found at around 39,39, just south of Thorium Point.

At first I was going to write out some crazy idea about how a Shaman MIGHT be able to solo this, but it relies on luck and ridiculous timing. It's really not worth the trouble.

So, to put it simply, this is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for a Shaman in their low 50's to do without at least one partner. Stoneclaw Totem just doesn't last more than a second or two against these elites.

If you're a Shaman and really want to complete this quest, find someone else to do it with.

I have done this quest several times on various characters, where there are multiple mobs on that ledge. But just now, did it with only the overseer there. After getting the plans, I waited on the jump down ledge for 5 mins, with still only the overseer there. They may have toned this down so it can be done solo at the suggested level for the quest.

Soloed as lvl 54 protection paladin. I pulled them and ran away, stunning one of the adds. When the other two gave up chase, I quickly ran back and kept the stunned mob in combat. After I killed him, I did the same with the other add and then I was left with only Overseer to kill him 1v1.
Even though it was not easy to kill either of them solo, just keep up seal/judgement of light/wisdom to replenish health and mana. Each fight took about 2 minutes. If you are blood elf, use mana taps along with arcane torrent to replenish some extra mana. Even the sentries have mana, though they don't cast any spells. And arcane torrent is a nice extra interrupt for those 400ish shadow bolts.

When I was left with one elite to face, I actually managed to loot the scroll, just stun the mob and go for it. If the last mob is Overseer, you get extra 2-3 seconds as he probably starts casting a shadow bolt.

When I did it (Patch 2.3), There was one The boss and a normal lookout (lvls 50, 47) and normal, so I just killed them for the Wanted Quest then grabbed the item, piece of cake. I soloed it as a 48 Hunter.

A very easy quest after patch 2.3. Non of the mobs are elite. Did it as lvl 51 warrior - easy to take down 3 mobs at a time! Absolutely no problem.

I found at exact cords 40.5, 35.7. entrance to the correct shaft is 49.6, 45.5 and you can jump down to the platform at 48, 45

these, after 2.4 are no longer elite, overseer Maltorius and 1 add ( i got a 48 lookout) are guarding the scroll, easy kills,
its on a ledge above the quarry, for those without co ords, go into the slag pit, enter the quarry through a gate, follow it round and up a ramp, clear the right side and run onto the ledge :)

great information here execpt the bosses were no longer elites....im a lvl 49 warlock and took them out with ease with my voidwalker out...one is a lvl 48 and then the guy you have to kill for his head..the oversear is a lvl 50 adn the plans are right beind them on the table

Cleared this easily as a lvl 50 prot pally. The fastest way to get in is to jump down the hole and go through the gate, take a left and keep going. Just two guys, a lvl 47 lookout and the boss, no elites in the area.

To reach the cave entrance is a bit hard!

I made the mistake and I tried to reach from the bottom of the pit and was looking for elevator for a few minutes and I couldn't find one!

I then thought to jump from the surface down to the cave entrance at around 49.7, 45.4

It works!

The entrance to this cave is at 49.76, 45.76 for those people like me who just run to coordinates you'll find the above coordinates only help if you realize you must go into a cave.

All right, help for those without cords:

Going left to right across The Cauldron on your world map, you will want to find & enter the 2nd cave from the left.

Once in you'll cross a bridge & on the far side of that bridge, along the left wall, will be a Quarry Gate.

Go through the Quarry Gate make a right turn then keep heading straight until you eventually find a ramp that goes up and will be along your right up against the wall.

Go up the ramp and stay right, you'll wind up in a huge room and see a another bridge infront of you.

Don't take that bridge turn to the right of it, where the end of the huge room is & tada! There is Overseer Maltorius guarding the Secret Plans: Fiery Flux.

The item is behind the big nasty Overmaster Maltorius (50elite) and his two lovely guards (48elite), in the Cauldron, Slag Pit, 40,35.

Clear the area outside the boss just to avoid adds. Get to maximum range, and poly the lvl 50. back up while the guards run at you. when they're close, frost nova them in place, blink back to the plans, grab them and drop down before they kick your ass =)

You need to enter the second cave from the left.
Wander up there, until you can go up a ramp. Go up that ramp, and through the gate, then wander around up there. If you're level 58 (and possibly lower) you can just walk around them, and get the plans, then jump off the side.

Failing that, any kind of fear/MC would work ok, or a target dummy, perhaps?

this place is not quite as easy to find as everyone says... i ran around quite a bit after reading every one of these posts...

There was a post above that was on the right track but got a little hazy.

Second cave To the left (theres 5 caves in the cauldron, get the 2nd one.

Best way is to take the elevator located next to one of the 3-4 cranes on the north edge.

Once inside the cave, you might notice along the back wall "Quarry Gate" go through that. Follow the quarry around, it bends to the right mostly.
High levels can sneak around easily.

You'll see a lot of "Slave Worker"s and "Dark Iron Slaver"s. Eventually you come to a big room with "Dark Iron Taskmaster"s and an elemental named "Obsidion" on its back getting repaired by "Enslaved Archeologist"s. (they walk back and forth from "Ob" to some tools thing or something) you'll see to the south-east of that guy, a big ramp. Go up that.

At the top is a small room with some other guy "Blackheart" i think was in his name, i killed him too fast to care. (i was really frustrated)

You venture into what seems like a bunk room. (beds all along the walls benches/stools in the middle) No worries you're on the right track. Slightly past there, follow the right wall and you'll see a balcony, maybe a mob or two. Pass that, keep following the right wall, and you'll see another balcony with Overseer Maltorius, the plans are behind him.

In cosmos, 42,35 was the loc where i could stare right at him.

2. Use Bloodrage so you get some rage.
3. Select Overseer as your target.

4. Charge towards him, and use Intimidating Shout and run to Plans. QUICKLY untarget Overseer, then open the plans. (this "dazes" him while others run in fear)

5. When got the plans, jump to lower ledge, then to ground.
6. Have fun :)

Thanks to MnilinM for the great directions.. didnt take me long to get there!

It is quite easy as a warrior.. I soloed it at lvl 49 (it took me a few tries though to get it right...

it's alot shorter to take the far right entrance, cross the bridge in there and then your in the same area with the plans and the 3 elites on the balcony

Holy Crap. The guy sheeped me, polished off my VW then killed me. I returned (stupid me no SS) rezed below them. This time I put all I had into the Caster. Spamed all my instants + Deathray. Sac'd the VW hit the Spellstone. His pals and him killed me with the Mag only having 10% of life left. I SS Rezed and a rogue unstealthed and attacked. He sapped a guard the ignored the other. I S-Burned the caster and down he went. The Rogue polished off the guard while I DOT'd him. This is definitely a Grab and Run sort of quest to solo. I kill 60 elite Guardians all the time. This CASTER soaked up TON of damage....(and I hate being sheeped). Use caution if you plan on capping the lot of them (which I had to do after they sheep/killed me). Have fun. 60 Lock Master Demonologist.

I was 60lvl when i did this. I m tank so my dps is really crap. I couldnt kill the 3 of them together. Actually not even the 2. So what i did was to get killed 2 times. I killed the first 48 elite, died. Then the 2nd, died again. Then i went there and really liked the fact the boss is nothing without his 2 adds. So its easy. Get killed 2 times if u wanna solo this and u ll get the flux.

Previous posts were right. U get it in the far right cave in searing. Tloc 40,35 (inside the cave).

I posted a screenshot that might help some.
Its easy if u do it that way. Wont take more than 10min.

Warriors
Easy, Charge at boss, use bloodrage if you dont want to waste to much hp before you have taken the plans, and then fear them... Take the plans and jump down.

Hunters and locks
If you want your pet to save as much hp as possible, but out an freesing trap and then lure them to you and then take agro with pet, run and take it and jump down and feign death if you want to make sure you dont have any agro. locks can just take agro with your minion and run in and take it, jump down and you have made it.

Priests
As said, Fear take it and fly.

Rogues
Nice expanation over mine, sap one, blind one and gouge one and take the plans and vanish.

Pladin
You should be able to shield and take it, They are humanoids so you can stun 2 of them, but if you cant figure out how to get rid of the third one do like the next message

Mages
Sheep one, lure the other ones to you, Frost Nova and then blink to the plans, take the plans and jump

All other classes
Make a grp and do the wanted quest at the same time, thats a grp quest, dont know any of your special abillites you see ;p

Why don't you tell the damn locations of the entrance of the cave instead of the actual underground location which we cannot see in the map. THE ENTRANCE OF THE CAVE IS WHAT HELPS PEOPLE TO FIND IT!

overseer maltorius isn't an elite and he has only 1 guard, 1 dark iron lookout. it is pretty easy to do at lvl 47. xD

Overmaster Maltorius is now a level 50 non-elite and has one 48 non-elite gaurd thanks to the new patch.

So 480 kingsblood, 240 scales, 120 coal = neutral to friendly, (3000.

Kingsblood is the limiter (my servers prices just went insane) scales come real fast if you kill during slow times, they drop them 100% of the time and sometimes 2.

lol, one of the advantages of being a hunter.. i soloed this at level 47.. sent in my pet, while he was busy being killed i grabbed the plans.. then jumped off the ledge to avoid being killed.. win! ;

if you have any sort of pet, send it in to keep em busy while you grab the plans.. i guess that's why it's not an elite quest, you dont actually have to kill the mobs.

Im there and cant ues the plans.

I can see Maltorius and his mob, and the plans on the bench behind him but i dont get a little gear icon over the plans :(

I made it easy, i didn't even have to kill the elites, just walked besides til they moved enough far away.

Soloed as lvl 49 Druid.

Stealthed in cat-form. When you get to the obsidion go up the spiral ramp and follow the path until you come to a place that looks like a bunker.

You go out one side theres a place sticking out. I stealthed in behind Overseer Maltorius and pounced on him used shred a couple of times he was at half hp before he started attacking me but the other one was still killing me. I finished him off with 5 combo point ferocious bite then killed the lvl 48 non-elite guard. Grabbed the plans and ran out.

Why isn't this quest marked Elite?
You have to fight 1 lvl 50 Elite and 2 lvl 48-49 Elites + 1 lvl 50 (regular)

I couldn't solo this at lvl56 never mind the jammy sods at lvl 48...yada yada yada. Tried scrolls of spiIII, agiIII, intIII strIII, 4 totems including stoneclaw, stomp (tauren) and still dead in 5mins. They are a mixture of melee, spell and ranged. Grr...stupid quest...oh for a totem that took all aggro for 10secs

I did a not so group friendly plan, when the main tank ran in and took all aggro i just ran in and took the plans. Hey not to group friendly but it worked. I did help other get the plans later after the other two died.

I did it as a 52 level lock. its easy if you let your VW tank the 2 body guards and elite. Then walk past them take the plans and your done. you can then Sacrifice the void walker to save your hide.

This worked for me, you'll probably die but you'll get it. Get to where the scroll is and the 3 people guarding it, sheep one from afar then wait for the others to get to you, frost nova them to the floor, blink over to the scroll and pick it up as fast as you can.

Then just hope for the best!

Solod this as a lvl 49 warrior. Bloodrage to get some extra rage, then just ran in and used intimidating shout. It held for 8 seconds and i just ran out.

There's about a 5-6 second timer to pick up the plans, so I did this as a level 48 Rogue, I don't have the 5.5 second gouge, so I did this: Kill the 2 pairs of guards outside the room, distract and sap Maltorius, back up and throw knife at one of his elite sentries so they both chase you far out of the room, then blind one, then gouge the other, then Sprint to the secret plans and get them. This helps you make up for the time needed to pick up the plans.

Due to this silly games thoughts.... and trying to "JUMP DOWN" to get to a cave and then crawl your way back up to KEEP TRYING I have deleted about 6 quests.

I was level 60 when I did this.. since the Thorium Brotherhood was added late.

Anyway, if you are high level you can sneak past all of them on by going as near the ledge as possible. You can then pick up the plans without even a fight!

I soloed this as a lvl 49 hunter. You just send your pet for the leader, the two others will defend him. then run rigth by and take the scroll and run out again. If they follow, just use feign death and you'll be okay.

easy for a lvl 50 Frost Mage......first buff your self with Ice Barrier and Mana shield then sheep the first, water elemental the second, third comes charging you so frost nova it and run for the plans. Grab them and head over the bridge. done.

I went in there solo. 54 Shadow Priest. Killed who I needed to kill. Once I got where the three elites where at, I mind control the level 50. Let the other two elites kill the level 50. Just before the level 50 dies, he has the power to sheep, sheep one of the other level 49 elites. Now you only have one to deal with. Sheild yourself, run in, scream get the plans and jump down. They don't follow. I floated down and only had to fight one guy. Worked out well.

well... I'm a lv 54 druid, in awesome armour (half of my tier 0 and everything else is lv 50+ blues) and it would seem impossible for me to kill them.

like 100% impossible. maybe even 110% impossible.

any ideas? cuz I'm all out? it would seem I can stay alive the longest, but going into bear form, and starting combat with Frenzied Regen.. and I die within the next 5 seconds... like honestly? wtf is up with that?

Tried soloing this guy at 52 or 53, and couldn't get it done. Not a rouge so can't just sneak in and sap. Anyway this guys is lvl 50 elite w2 bodyguards, recommend a group or higher level.

The locs are great and the info was great. BUT, at my level, the boss was immune to mind control so I said "screw it!" and bubbled, charged in so that all three were all right around me...then screamed bloody murder. They ran. I hurried to loot the plans then hit levitate and jumped. No death...heck no injuries either. If you're a priest skip all the fancy crap...bubble, run in, fear, loot, jump...done. There was no way I was going to let that quest sit in my log until it was green. Good luck!

I couldnt figure out how I was going to do this quest. Then i found another warrior willing to team up. We each took turns. One distracted them while the other grabbed the plans. I was 51, he was 46. Not as nice as some of the other plans but it worked.

This quest is easy for Mage also just a little more complex.

1 Sheep one
2 when the 2 approach Frost Nova
3 Blink to plans
4 open Plans

how do i get this quest to become avaialbe from Master Smith Burninate? he is not offering it to me and i need to do the Gaining Acceptance quest to get rid of some of the [Dark Iron Residue. i have over 200 of them now =(

Tried to solo killing the overseer then later the other 2 elites... Im a lvl 57 rogue, used garrote, expose armor, rupture, with dodge, ghostly strike and a major healing pot but this guy is still alive! The next time i tried I just stealthed behind the 3 elites and took the quest item. Used distract to make sure even though the overseer was green to me already and the other 2 elites are grey.

Completing this quest also opens up a repeatable quest for reputation with the Thorium Brotherhood. It requires 2 Incendasaur scales, 4 kingsblood, and 1 coal. I've done it 46 times thusfar, have gotten roughly halfway through neutral to friendly.

I soloed this as a 48 Rogue. Run in, kill one, vanish, sap one, blind the other, take the plans and jump.

I did as a 50 warrior, just used intimidating shout and had enough time to loot the plans while the mobs were fleeing.

As a level 50 warlock, the three of them are too much to handle. The two guards hit fast, so once the VW is gone it is impossible to get anything other than an instant cast off. If you have help, Maltorius has a very small mana pool, so Drain Mana is actually useful. Easy to solo without killing any of them, as others have mentioned. Send in the VW, are run for the plans, sacrificing him if he gets too low, then drop off the edge of the cliff to escape.

Wow, this was the easiest quests EVER (as a rogue). There were 2 guards, a 48 and 50, both Elite. I stealthed in, Sapped one, Blinded the other, Grabbed the plans, Vanished, and ran out. I love rogues :D

46 mage and 47 pally. Sheeped 50, froze the other 2 in place while pally bubbled us. Easy xp, didn't kill.

easiest quest evar....

ran in, ally draenei killed everything for me, it was fighting a dwarf, run into the plans platform, no elites, all dead, loot them, laugh at the ally, leave.

the plans are right behind overseer maltorius in a little balcony room before getting to the incendiousaurs.

i did this as a 49 warlock.

it was pretty easy after finding where to go which was just making your way through the "tunnel" or wtv but i just sent my VW on one of them and it tanked the three of them then i used howl of terror and grabed the plans and my vw died and then i died but i got wat i needed so it was all good

You need to sap, blind, and gauge the 3 mobs, then take the plan.

At 60 sneak to the edge behind the plans, (if you are a rogue) use distract, click plans, re stealth.

No fights needed.

As a priest, shielding and mind controlling is the way to go here. I only saw one guard around him for some reason, so I MCed the named, sheeped the guard, ran the named off the ledge and broke MC. Right after grabbing the plans, sheep broke off the guard. I feared him and hearthed. He ran far enough away that I was able to hearth a few seconds before they got to me.

Also, mind soothe is your friend in here. If you don't want to fight too many mobs on the way to him, use it.

Did this solo as a lvl48 rogue. Sap the lvl50, blind one add, gouge the other, pick up the plans, and jump down the edge. I pulled a normal mob, did that, and once he died, i got out of combat. I assume the elites just lost their aggro.

Go into the slag pit, on your right will see a a big gate you need to unlock that,
Run with the arrow almost hitting North, you will then see a ramp, go up that ramp,
go into the room and sorta go straight, A bit of the way in look right and you will see a balcony, that is where the 3 guys are standing

meh, for a bunch of you may say its kinda easy, stupid guy was practically standing on them, now as a rogue im a fan of blinding the enemy and taking my prize, but he also had two 48 elite gaurds with him... i tried to grab it, got interupted after 3 seconds, and jumped off the edge, wherefor i died.. but it doesnt seem that easy to me, oh well plenty of other quests =)

Plans are at 40.35; enter the cave at 49.45. Lvl 50 elite mob with 2 elite 48 friends.

Done with lvl57 mage and lvl 52 Warlock.

Did it with a hunter and a warlock but this would work for any type with a range attack. One stands just to the side of the archway out of site whilst the other stands at max range and then shoots/ casts on the boss. All 3 mobs appear to be linked so they all come for you! Then you run! The mobs follow you whilst your partner runs in the room and grabs the plans then runs out after you. Meanwhile the mobs give up after a short while and head back, passing your partner on the way. Rinse and repeat for yourself. We didn't get touched once.
A nice extra touch is to mark the mobs with a skull, moon or whatever you want, makes the easier to see as they tend blend in with the background and dwarfs are so small anyway!

I just wanted to put this out there. Because I spent a really long time trying to figure out how to get into the slag pit. just to enter the slag pit you have to go to this chain with a hole thing. its at 53,42. If your a priest use levitate. Its uber easy.

It doesnt get any easier, walk up put on ur mind control cap, cast the mind control on center dude other 2 dudes starts beating on u wait a couple of seconds ur newly aquired minion will take aggro from u just grab the plans and drop off the edge of the platform there is a ledge u can land on w/o dieing

If you can't kill all three at once, MC one of the guards. Get him killed, run out and come back to MC the boss. Kill the second guard, draining all mana from the boss and then work him over.

You know, I just did this quest and I almost felt like I was cheating. I sapped one guard, Blinded the other guard, Gouged the R-tard, looted and vanished into thin air. I killed on the way out cause I felt so bad.

The plans are guarded by 3 elites. Doable solo as rogue with sap + blind + improved gouge, but you gotta be quick.

Soloed as a 55 hunter. No killing.

Send in pet to hold threat. Run around and jump up on the table to grab plans. They're going to kill your pet but try grabbing plans before they do. If they DO kill your pet and turn to you, feign death. Wait for them to go back. This is where being on or on the other side of the table helps. When you get up from feign you should be able to grab the plans without drawing aggro, oddly enough.

Get out as you please (probably wait to revive pet)
