Definitely a slow drop rate - but you get a ton of clams which offer up tangy clam meat to cook with as well as the occasional iridescent pearl to auction - I got 3 of them during the time I got 20 turtle meat; which was basicallly following the river from the ocean all the way up into Alterac before it turns east.

An AMAZING grinding quest if u like to grind, as im typing this im at 2/10 after 25 minutes and like..how ever many kills ive gotten so far.
Unless your a real lucky person I suggest skipping this quest unless you feel like grinding for a while.

Well kind of bad droprate, but some of the turtles drops 2 meat. so. did go pretty fast. Have to take the turtles in the Lordamere Lake though.

The location given in the quest log has a much better droprate than the river. Head to the lake north of Dalaran, i got all 10 pieces of meat in 16 kills. Also it is untrue, as of July 20, 2007, that you need 1 cooking skill to acquire this quest, i have yet to train cooking and just completed it.

idk i dont think the drop rate was that bad.. i killed about 6 now and have 4 of em... 2 of the turtles dropped 2 each. finding these ones starting from where the road from southshore meets the river.

Meat drops from turtles who are located north of Dalaran. Drop from ones in Hillsbrad are very low. However quest tells you to hunt turtles at north Dalaran.

i suggest grinding the turtles in the shimmering flats near the thousand needles. the drop rate there aint all that nasty and besides, on the mirage raceway, there are quests to be done and everything is found on the shimmering flats itself. watch out for higher level turtles between lvl 34-35. kill those lvl 30-31 turtles. located on the northwestern part of the shimmering flats!

maybe im just incredibly lucky or, more likely, blizzard has tweeked the quest, because i got a 1/1 (!!) drop rate on the turtles in the river just east of Southshore, between the waterfall near the shore and the rocks a bit upriver. I even got 2 turtle meat from one.

The river on the east of southshore drops more than the other places, I got turtle meat with every turtle I killed, and I even sometimes got Turtle Meat x2.

When you pick up the soothing spices, be sure to grab the other recipes the guy sells. You can put them on the AH and make some money.

The turtles you kill for this quest are simply godly for Cooking, from about 110-225.

First, they occasionally drop Bristle Whisker Catfish for 100+ Cooks. The turtles also drop clams which have Zesty Clam Meat for Goblin Deviled Clams. Farm enough clams to get to 175 and you'll have tons of Turtle Meat for the quest and to skill up -- not to mention some Irridescent/Small Lustrous Pearls and Heavy/Medium leather (if you're a skinner) to boot.

The Turtle Bisque recipe doesn't even turn yellow until 215, so you can easily do your entire stretch from 150-225 this way.

They were dropping 1 or two meats everytime and about 30% of the time got a clam besides. Was skinning besides for medium to heavy hides. Easy quest.

I just hunted up the river, then went around the falls and continued up river till I found the mountain lions for that quest and completed it also.

Pick up Costly Menace before doing this one. Every turtle dropped at least one meat, often two. Worked my way up river to Chillwind point to do Costly Menace. By the time I reached there I had 38 meats, 9 thick scales and 7 speckled shell fragments, along with 10 tasty clam meats and an irridesent pearl. Ended up killing 19 lions for which I got 7 lion meats, 3 briskly whiskers, a retractable claw and a large fang. Love this quest.

Make sure you are at the spot mentioned in the quest text, near Dalaran is 100% drop rate.

Check the chat log in this screenshot, you can see I got over what I needed in under a minute.

this is in response to everyone who suggested the area in dalaran gives more turtle meat - this is false. i have done this quest (or forms of it) both as a horde and as an alliance, through about 6 characters and both sides of the map (since April 2007) gives about the same quantity of turtle meat (between 1-2 from memory). So there's really no need to run all the way up north and then come back down to finish up a quest "quick".

I don't know about anyone else, but as a level 30 frost mage, the turtle I fought resisted half of my spells making them a pain to kite. Thought I'd make mention of this.

Although this is an alliance quest I as horde was able to complete it in 5 min. I went to the river near tarren hill killed the snapjaws and went into tarren to buy soothing spices from the cook. spent just over 1 silver for it. Got 30 and felt it was worth it.

I just did this quest and I went to Lake Lordamere (Lake north of Dalaran) and got a 167% droprate. Most of them were dropping 2 meat at a time. I highly recommend this spot, (15,54).

Ok i have a problem i got my turtle meat and soothing spices but for some reason i don't get the continue button on quest.
Any ideas at to whats up, is it a bug or am i missing something.

When i started the quest, i got the message: Shutdown in 13:00 and i was able to finish it before it said Shutdown in 9:00 So this is a very time-wasting quest and i will never ever do it again.

EDIT: this quest ( turned in at Shutdown in 6:00) gave me 250 SW rep wich is very handy as i want my horse, i am lvl 30 now, and i got 17938/21000 rep into revered with SW wich i think isnt that bad....

LVL 34, 2500 XP
Turtles spawn on the river E of Southshore. They spawn from next to the town to all the way up past Tarren Mill.

I got meat off of lvl 30 and 31 turtles. I would estimate that I killed about 25 to get 10 meat.

The soothing spices can be purchased from the trade supplier in the big building N of the inn and across the street (last bldg before griffons)

Drop rate is not good, but if you just READ the quest, it EXACTLY says where to find them. And th�re at least the drop rate is a lot better than once every 20 kills. It took me 10 min in total maybe. At that time I was a 32 mage.
So....READ the quest and you�re done.
If you have no idea where Dalaran is, well, go North North West from Southshore. It�s left of where the map says where the Arherac Mountains are. When you walk in there you�ll see a BIG (read VERY BIG) pink bowl/shield/I don�t know what, but just behind it are the turtles.

Have fun...

Oh... there is this little house standing there...if you�re not at leasta lvl 35, don�t be curious and go inside.... you�ll die :)

Well. Horde can get this quest too. And to get the soothie spice, just talk to the Tradesman in the inn in TM. He sell it for 1.44s
To get the turtle meat, go to the river and kill Snapjaws.

EDIT: After killing Snapjaws for 10 mins. I got all my turtle meat, lvl 31 often drop 2 meat, and lvl 30 often drop 1 meat.

My advice.... if you plan to do this quest, what you do:

At lvl 30 there is a quest over in Thousand Needles at the Goblin/Gnome race track to kill Turtles for their shells. They drop the SAME Turtle Meat as the ones near SS, and they drop the Hardened Turtle Shells or whatever you have to get for the quest, VERY RARELY. You need 8 or 9 of them.

So go do the shells quest, by the time you're done you can fly over to SS and turn in the turtle meat to get double bonus for fighting those STUPID ass turtles for SO LONG!

if you swim up river all the way to western plaguelands the drop rate improves as you go. i was getting 2 or 3 pieces at a time when they dropped. plus you can skirt around the edge and get the flight path in western plaguelands without having to face the high level monsters

Well, I found the drop rate quite good. Actually, from the start it was really slow, than at 5 meats, they started to drop them 2 and 2.

The only problem remaining is though that I can't find the quest giver. He doesen't appear in my mini-map.
Is it just a bug or have Blizzard removed the npc?

For the one that were complaining the drop is lousy you just had bad luck it took me less then 8 min to get the all 10xTurtle Meat. All you have to do is run up the river stream(heading north) by the time you get to the top you show have all the meat you can eat....also some SnapJam(turtle) drop 2 meat instead of 1 so it easier and faster............................AlSO WATCH OUT FOR HORDES!

I killed every turtle up the river and got 1 friggin turtle meat (from 25-30 turtles).

I then went to the lake, as it says in the quest, and killed maybe 10 more turtles from the shore and got 1 more meat. I was still in the Dalaran subzone as I did this.

I then went INTO the lake, so that I was in the actual Lordameare Lake subzone, and after that almost every turtle dropped meat, and some 2. I only had to kill about 8 more turtles.

So I think maybe the drop rate is boosted if you're in the actual lake subzone.

The best place I found to grind these are at 21,47. There are plenty along the shore to kill for the meat. And yes the post above about the spice is correct. You can buy the spice from the trade goods guy in the last building on the north west side of town.. he is located on the lower level of the building.

Me too, the drop rate sucks a lot. I went from the ocean and killed every turtle all the way up the river to the Western Plaguelands and only got five one way. Had to all the way back down to get the other five. I killed around 40 - 50 turtles.

To get the best drop rate go around the CO 26-43 do NOT just go behind Dalaran it is terrible work ur way down the coast. This quest took forever!

I had to kill like, 50 turtles for 10 turtle meat to drop...no exageration. One of the most annoying quests I've ever done! The snapjaws are found in the river that runs through Hillsbrad Foothills...Good Luck ! =)

obviously they changed the drop rate in an update , the drop rate has been increased hugely now, some turtles drop 2 meat, on average they drop 1 per turtle u kill or maybe slighty more

You can buy the Soothing Spices in Tauren Mill too if you got your turtles closer to TM - since you are dropping off the quest in Tauren anyways. The cook vendor is just off to the side of the Inn.

1st- Head East of Quest Start

2nd- Kill "Snapjaws"(30-31) located in the stream.

3rd- Follow Stream upwards until you obtain 10 turtle meat.

4th- Head to Refuge Point and buy "Soothing Spices" from Vendor.

5th- Head back to Southshore and Turn in quest.

*Easy for my level 31 prot warrior. Nice quest, gets you good food and easy 30S. Hope this has helped you!

For all who have coords map, the actually location is by the east river from Southshore at 55,55. Hillsbrad Foothills. I'm standing right in the middle of all the turtles. You may have to wait til they spawn again if someone else is on the same quest!

i did this at lvl 28 , im a warlock killed maybe 5 30-31 snapjaws and the soothing spices are right next to the inn(as ur looking at it its on the right) easy quest , good food!

In the Theramore Inn there is a guy that gives a quest to collect forked mudrock tongues. As a 36 rogue I took this quest and had 9 turtle meat by the time I finished it. The drop rate on the tongues is nothing to write home about, but doing two low droprate quests at once can often lessen the pain.

2500 exp at level 29, when the quest is yellow.

The lake location described below is definitely the ideal place for this, if a bit far to walk to. Drop rate is about the same as murloc quest drops, which is to say not very high. These are easy kills though, auto-attack and AFK (which is what I did).

Discovered chillwind point to be the best drop area for this quest then work your way back down the river.
Work your way up the river after the waterfall nothing before it.
Non aggressive beasts so you attack they attack.
Great herbs along the way as well so have your minimap zoomed out for herbalism.
Had to get the spice in IF not avail in SS unless you know something I dont.
Many horde too non pvp.

Face it folks many kill X number or collect X number will be the same. I experienced it with my now 70 hunter all the time. I did a quest one time when the drop rates for it were described as not only bad but almost non-existant. You live with it and remember you are getting experience. We all forget the quests we do that say collect 10x and we get tem all in 20 mobs.

I swam all the way up the river into the Western Plague Lands, killing every turtle along the way and only had 6 of 10 when I got there. I turned around and headed back south again killing every turtle and before I had even hit the road to head west I had 10/10 about a half hour of play time well worth it for 2500xp :)

I read that the meat drop rate was real low. It didn't take me long to get the meat. Which I am glad for. I had some drop 2-3 pieces at a time, which helped out bigtime.

did this quest at lvl 31, after read most of ur posts i try mainly jus goin for the lvl 31´s, as they did seem to dropped the meat alot better then the lvl 30´s. got the first 9 meats within 15 mins then for the last one i musta killed atleast 20 more turles to get x2 meat. abit annoyin but its not too bad if ur doin the lion quest at the same time, start at bottom of river an work up by the top u should have 5 meats then while up there kill the lions then head back down the river for the other 5, hopefully ull have better luck then most of us did =) (tend to b a few horde players up near lions)

There are turtles all over the North and Northeast area of Shimmering Flats near Gadgetzan (lvl 34-35)
Got five "turtle meat" in two hours BUT I only attacked maybe two dozen in that I was after their shells. They aren't KOS and you couldn't kill them fast enough as there are so many. Good place for Horde as it's neutral...

Just finished this quest myself & it took me about 20 minutes.From Southshore go east into the river,there are about 3 turtles there,just kill those and work your way up North killing as you go.When you get up soo far just work your way back.As long as noone else is killing them,you should get all 10 in about 15-20 mins.1 of the closest buildings coming into town is vendor Micha Yance,she has the spices you need.Very easy quest

horrible horrible quest took me about 50 mins to collect all the meat thankfully I managed to get a fair few pearls in the thick clams and ended up making a 4 gold profit from them

81.57 and along that stretch of river is the best place, at 81.57 there is 7 turtles (lv 30-31) to be seen

At level 40, Christoph Jeffcoat isn't giving this quest anymore. Possibly nerfed during the last patch? Real bummer, I have several stacks of turtle meat to cook!

My 32 NE Hunter is doing this quest, mainly for the recipe and whatever faction I might get.
After two days of killing every turtle I see I have 7 of 10 of the meat. Plenty of other things for loot, mostly vender fodder, but also Tangy clam meat.
I've tried haunting the river from the rocks to the falls near South Shore, and I've tried elsewhere.
Basically the drop rate sucks.
I was 31 when I started this! An entire level from doing nothing but killing turtles.

It is. You just got lucky. I am doing this quest for the eighth time on yet another character and the drop rate is still as low as ever. So far on this playthrough, 28 kills and only 6 pieces of turtle meat (and I got turtle meat x2 from 2 mobs). Seems to match the reported 20% drop rate.

Just run right past the stables and you'll come to a little river where the turtles spawn. There aren't many of them and the drop rate sucks, so I picked up the Stormwind Ho! quest, the Daggerspines are right along the river, and did that while the turtles re-spawned. Just kept going back and forth till finished. The spices you just pick up at a Trade Goods store, level 32 Mage :)

At level 60 I decided to go back and learn cooking. I'm at 293 cooking and level 60 and Chef Jessen won't talk to me.

The drop late was insanely low on these, but the amount of xp I got from killing all of the turtles more than made up for it. I averaged 340-400 XP per turtle, at resting rate. Not too bad, for a grinding quest.

I actually have not had a hard time with this. The main thing that I apparently did different is I got the turtle meat from the turtles in the Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles.... Trust me, it's a LOT higher drop rate there, plus a nice grinding quest to go along with it.

OK here u go..
The Soothing Spices can be found at Micha Yance (48 , 55) he's a vendor ..Trade Goods..
And the 10 Turtle Meat can be found at Snapjaw (55 , 57) and then go up along the river and u will found a lot of Snapjaw ..

Information about the quest : You will get 2500 xp .. (that's what i get at level 30)

I'm warning you the drop rate is SO SO LOW !

Many have recommended you just go up the river to chillwind, but I found you're walking forever, and I only got 4 going up and down. I went to Lake Lordamere and there are a zillion turtles there - the drop rate is still awful, but you don't have to be walking up and down forever fighting whoever else is trying to do the same quest.

I didn't have a problem with this recipe on the 6 charas that got it. Why? Because I have Leatherworkers.

See, to advance, you need turtle scales-- they are the lowest level Mail patterns and I really doubt if you can become a high-skill-level LW with Cloth and Leather recipes alone. When you skin a urtle, you sometimes get a scale, sometimes a piece of level-appropriate leather, and often both. Plus when you loot them you get meat and vendor trash, good for cash.

The shore NE of Theramore Isle is lousy with turtles, here called Spikeshells and about level 34. Like most other drops, I'm assuming that the higher level turtles drop better. In supplying three LWs with enough turtle scales to get them to their specialties, I managed to pick up enough turtle meat to fill a Mageweave Bag. I know this because I have a bank character that has a Mageweave Bag filled with turtle meat. So when my charas need this recipe, they just fly to Southshore, I mail them a stack of turtle meat, bada boom bada bing.

I also got some while doing a similar task on the turtles near Steamwheedle Port, which are about level 39. Hey, you may as well get some XP while you're grinding turtle meat, right?

Go to lordamere lake. Only killed 6 turtles to get all 10 because some of them dropped 2 pieces of meat. Quick and easy. I went for the ones in the water.

I checked on the auction house but saw neither the recipe nor the actual food. Is it possible for people to list it, and I was just unlucky? Or is it not possible to list?

Really kinda bugged that I did the quest when I was new to the game and didn't appreciate cooking!

Lordamere Lake on the north edge of Dalaran (Big Pink Dome thing on the West Edge of Alterac Mtns.) is a much better place to find turtles. There are TONS of them all along the south and west shores of this lake.

Level 31 Snapjaws have the best drop rate. Especialy in Chilwind Point.
Metamap coords 71,71 from the Alterac Mountains map. About the same place to do the "Costly Menace" quest (lvl 32 33 Mountain Lions).

I only had to kill 8, the 2 lvl 31's dropped 2 meat each! Happy Days.

The horde version of this quest can be accepted from the cooking-vendor inside the inn in Tarren Mills. Hes just by the stairs leading up.

Turtles are fairly easy kills. Work your way up/down the river if you like, or go up to Lordamere lake and grind them there. Meat drops infrequently, but isnt rare. If you're a skinner you get a good load of medium/heavy leathers from these as well. Maybe even turtle scales which is also in demand.

Cant remember the xp/silver reward for this, but you get a stack of the food and the recipie. Its actually worth getting the cooking skill up for this.

Ok it might be a bit of a trip but, I can tell you that its easier to get your turtle meat from the shimmering flats before you head to hillsbrad to get the spices... the drop rate is very reasonable in shimmering falts. just FYI~!

/way 60 45 and straight north on the river for all you need - doesn't drop on every kill.

I travelled all the way up to Lordamere, had a look around; the co-ordinates given in the top posts were either in the middle of the sea or nowhere near water.

Went back to Southshore & to the river just outside - got all the turtles, some dropping 2x meat within about 5 mins. So wasted about half an hour running around.

drop rate is low so be prepared to spend at leas half an hr on this quest.

Easier to just buy the damn recipe.
Killed every Snapjaw along the river from Southshore to Wester Plaguelands (about 25-30) and the drop rate was ZERO.

Complete waste of time.

im afraid not. SouthShore is a alliance town. Btw, turtle spwan at river. there a river east from Southshore. You can find them there. around 5-6 turtle . Drop is fairly difficult.

I managed to get all the turtle meat quite easily. I was killing all the turtles in the Shimmering Flats area trying to do other quests and managed to pick up the meat. However in the end I abandonded the quest as I needed space to pick up more quests.

I disagree on the drop rate problems being mentioned here. I got all 10 pieces of meat in about 15 minutes and that's with frequent stops to go herb gathering. Often times one turtle would come up empty only to have the next one drop two pieces of meat.

Yes there is a horde version and I got two turtle meats about every other lvl 31 snapjaw I killed. Guess the drop rate is pretty random...

I went up both the river...take the north road out of Southshore, turn right (east) till you hit the river, and then wade/swim north. Snuff all turtles. This gave me three things...5 bits of meat, a new FP i picked up just north of Chillwind (easy) and a headache from swimming so far :p.

I then headed to Lake Lordamere..north on road out of Southshore and turn left (west) for a long arse way to Silverpine forest (the next map over). Once you're on the new map you'll be able to see Lake Lordamere on your world map. Another long walk. Dalaran is in the south west corner of the lake and is another pain to get to :( more swimming!. I finally found the snapjaws there. You'll easily see Dalaran once you're close cos it's a huge purple bubble that I couldn't find a way into.

Having tried both I think next time I'll just grind up and down the river.

And then I walked all the way back :(.

AS for the spices...there's in the house just south of the Flight Path.

2500 exp and 30 silver. Worth doing. FYI lvl 30 shad spec priest and solo'd this.

Turtles spawn on the river E of Southshore. They spawn from next to the town to all the way up past Tarren Mill.

I got meat off of lvl 30 and 31 turtles. I would estimate that I killed about 25 to get 10 meat.

The soothing spices can be purchased from the trade supplier in the big building N of the inn and across the street (last bldg before griffons)

Plenty of turtles found in river east of Southshore,
just keep following the river north killing as you go. Drop seems average for this type of quest.

very easy quest, "head up past Dalaran to Lake Lordamere" coords 23,45. I found a low drop rate from the turtles on the shore (and along the river for that matter), HOWEVER a 100% drop rate from the turtles under the water, infact they were dropping 2-3 pieces of meat each and this was from both lvl 30 & 31 turtles. So take a swim, I even found a bunch of Lake Frenzy to cook as well. Then to complete the quest you will need Soothing Spices, which you can purchase from trade vender Micha Yance in Southshore, he's inside the house closest to the gryphons @ 49,55.

Go to the river right behind town 55,55

Head North up the river and kill turtles

They are every 30 paces or so all the way up the river

If you don't see them ,all it means is someone is culling in front of you , just keep following the river till you see some , they go all the way too the Western Plaguelands , lol

Get 6 (to be safe) and turn round and come back , they will have respawned behind you , i had 100% drop rate with some turtles dropping two lots of meat, maybe its patch 2.3.

Buy the spices from the trade vendor in the house behind Bartolo Ginsetti (49,55) , just south of the Flight Path

There's a fair amount of Mordelisca in Montanhas de Alterac 80,59, making it a good spot to farm if the other spawns are occupied.

Beware if you are using Questie for this quest, it shows you can buy Soothing Spices in Tarren Mill, which is impossible for an Alliance player such as myself. Coming in viewing distance of the city was already enough to get 2 guards running to me, couldn't manage to run away before they killed me.
You 're safer flying back to Arathi Highlands and buying it from Hammon Karwn. Btw, I got the Turtle Meat from the turtles in Thousand Needles, there's quite a competition for them, now that we're still in the first month and most people are lower level.

As a lvl 32 Mage with 3 points in Elemental Precision the level 31 turtles were resisting a LOT of my spells. Not sure if they have resistance to frost spells... Is there a way to find that out? Seems like my fire and arcane spells are not resisted nearly as much.

The drop rate on turtle meat is horrendous. I've killed 20 of them and have 1 meat. By comparison, I have about 10 tangy clam meat because they drop clams pretty often.

If you are attempting this in SoD. Head into Alterac Mountains and do the line of turtles by Lordamere Lake. I was solo the whole time and was able to get this quest done extremely quickly as there are a ton of turtles. Easily group 3-4 at a time.

Take my secret recipe for Turtle Bisque, for example. I've known folks to travel from as far as Darkshire just to enjoy a bowl. Speaking of which, I haven't been able to make any lately. I used to head up past Dalaran to Lake Lordamere myself to hunt Snapjaws but it's just too dangerous now. If you bring me some Turtle Meat from the Snapjaws up north, I'll whip some up!
