The initial quest in an Alliance chain that involves the long-awaited recapture of Gnomeregan for the Gnomeregan Exiles.

It is unclear at this point whether or not this means Gnomes will have their own capital city and/or starting zone, however.

The Horde-equivalent chain involves retaking the Echo Isles for the Darkspear Trolls.

All of these quest chains, plus more, are part of the Pre-Cataclysm launch event.

As far as I can tell by the text on the last quest in this chain, it says: Regain the Surface of Gnomeregan.
So, the capital itself, will likely still be under Leper Gnome/Trogg control.

Yes, yes, 'Only the surface'. But you know what Blizzard are like - they want the races to be equal! The Trolls are killing the leader of Echo Isles, and that means they will, 99% chance, get the whole thing back. And if the Trolls do it, then the Gnomes will have to, because if they don't there will be some serious QQ

But think about area. The Echo Isles are far smaller than Gnomeregan in its entirety. The surface of Gnomeregan alone would be equal enough, I think.

Plus, Echo Isles aren't the Darkspears' ancestral home. Its the first place they settled in Kalimdor. REtaking some of Gnomeregan would be a greater victory morale-wise even if the area is a bit smaller than the Echo Isles.

THIS JUST IN! Gnomeregan WILL become a capital city like Echo Islands for horde, the gnomeregan insatance will just be another stockades

[Our engineers have been working on getting our battle machines ready for our assault on Gnomeregan, but we're out of pilots!

We've developed a device called the Motivate-a-Tron, which prevents distraction from other sources and gives the gnome the courage to enlist.

After motivating a few Gnome Citizens, lead them out to Captain Tread Sparknozzle out at Steelgrill's Depot, just south of Ironforge.

Oh, and be careful. The device is still a little experimental. ]
