He stands right on the other side of the door that is the back entrance to Uldaman. He doesn't aggro you when you open the door, but he is very close.

You will need to kill him for the Mage Quest "Power in Uldaman" (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=1956)

i solo'ed him at lvl 44, frost-specced.

bring both, mana jade and mana agate and the biggest available mana pot.
enter the instance through the back entrance, open the door, go to max range and open fire.

frostnova and snaring is the key, keep a good distance to him at first...
he will spawn several low-hp, low-armor shards of himself during the fight, AoE and proceed kiting - each time you kill a shard, he will loose attack power
later in the fight he will do ~15 damage, so you don't need to kite anymore

No, you DO NOT need a group to kill one of these for the Mage quest.

Soloed this mob at L43, Frost-Specced Mage.

He IS soloable but it is not easy. You will want to have both mana gems up, and at least 2 mana pots, preferably 3. Cast Detect Magic on it and engage the mob and DPS it as much as you can, until it has the debuff (shattered obsidian) stacked 4 times. This will make its melee attack hit for 1 damage. After this you can die or zone out.

Start the fight again. This time he will not hit you for much of anything at all. My best advice is to simply pop mana shield / ice barrier and wand him down until shardlings spawn and then use Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, and Arcane Explosion in order to kill them (they reflect direct damage spells like Frostbolt / Fireball).

As an additional tip, when you start the encounter, you should buff yourself with both Dampen Magic and Frost or Fire Ward, to make it so that if one or two of your attacks are reflected it doesn't hurt you.

Soloed at level 40 frost spec with the above tips. Used Jade Owl Figurine once, evocation once, two mageweave bandages, two superior healing potions, both mana gems. Only had one frostbolt reflected and it nearly killed me so the frost ward is a good idea.

I think the current "wealth" displayed by wowhead of roughly 563gold is wrong.... Or I would be killing him a lot more often.

Nearly killed myself as a level 70 Destru lock :D He reflected once and I thought it was a one chance of that but nope, he kept reflecting my shadowbolts and I had to let my voidwalker finish him. Keep that in mind next time you're boosting a friend or trying to find boE blues and don't wanna look like a total noob infront of the ones you are boosting :)

Just killed him as a 38 Fire Mage, the above tips worked well. Used both gems, evo and a wool bandage (curse tailoring), but it went fairly easy.

Pyro - Fireball - Fireblast was generally enough to make him break, if not then FN, back off and do another Fireball or two + BW. Jump out once he breaks. Drink up and do it again, until he's at 4 stacks. Then I opened with Flamestrike, CoC BW AE, which killed all the adds. Don't do anything but wand when its just you & him - you need the mana for the adds. FN - back off - CoC BW AE was the best way of killing them, I found, as the adds still hurt.

Did this solo with my level 40 mage which had about 1200 health and 3500 mana while speccing frost for ice barrier, with the evocation glyph. The sentinel and the shards it produces both have a high rate of reflecting spells so the best way to avoid killing yourself is to use your wand, frost nova, cone of cold, and blizzard. Speccing frost was really essential the way I did this because shatter made the blizzard ticks crit. Okay so here is what I did:

1) Made sure that I had my mana jade ready and prepared with all cooldown ready. Cast ice barrier before the fight and drink to max mana.

2) Started wanding the sentinel. It really helps if you have one of the wands from the other mage quest that Tabetha gives you. And basically all you're doing here is kiting using as little mana as possible with just frost nova and wanding. Use cone of cold if needed.

3) When an obsidian shard spawns, frost nova and blizzard both the sentinel and the shard, and cone of cold to finish them off. Hopefully the shard will die after this.

4) You can then leave the instance and repeat until the sentinel has 4 attack reducing debuffs stacked on it and wand it to death while minding the shards that spawn, in which case you just use step 3 to defeat them.

I think thats the guy, here is other entr to Uldaman 64-44 but i am not 100% sure, i killed some robot with 1st part of name Obsidian, but dont remember 2nd part, 42-elite

sfe this guy is at the bak door so if u know were it is in ULDA or were in badlands it is ur ok but if not its in 1 of the very west chambers half way thro instance or go to the mountains in the east in badlands lvl 42 elite i think ive killed this guy bout 10 times it gets weaker but splits off into 5 pieces lvl 35! dno if its different for other servers but it shudnt be but if it is. thats the way for eonar

Too funny to watch! I finagled the help of a warlock to kill this guy for my mage quest and then we realized he reflects all spells, even DoTs! Luckily the warlock was high enough level that we let his blueberry tank it while we beat on him with our staves, daggers and wands. I almost literally rolled on the floor I was laughing that hard...

Had a heck of a time trying to kill this guy cause I kept having all spells reflect.
Just figured out what doesn't reflect.

I used wands on him the entire time and didn't get that damage reflected.

As a mage, I recommend shielding for damage, frost armor so it slows him (and hopefully freezes him periodically), freezing him in place and wanding him to death.

Of course, focus solely on the elite sentinel, don't worry about the minions until the boss is dead (he just regenerates more of them)

Was very surprised to find out upon my first time confronting this mob that he is able to summon pets (started with one, by end of fight there were multiples), and his pets and himself all reflect spell damage onto the casters, so combustion and pyroblast basically resulted in suicide.

Bottom line: bring melee friends =/

The Obsidian Sentinel is located just inside the back door to Uldaman. In case you don't want to do the whole instance and just want to pick up the mage item.

The guy is damn not easy for casters even at lvl 60, as he reflect casts. However I killed him solo as SL/NF warlock with succubus out.

Open up with Soul fire, then CoA with Ampify curse, the Corr. No more cast ar all! No drain life, no death coil, nothing. Just wand. Ignore adds, concentrate on him. I used HS to make sure I won't die. As he's dead, run out of instance, then come back when your mana/health full again and loot.

P.S. Not sure if this can be done without SL.

The Obsidian Sentinel is found in Uldaman, guarding the rear entrance inside the instance. You can enter this way by running into the cave in the Badlands, near the coordinates (65, 43). Once inside the instance through this method there is a single, large stone door that can be opened at any time. Directly behind this door is the Obsidian Sentinel. He has approximately 8500 HP.

The construct has access to Spell Reflection, a passive spell that causes it to reflect most spells directly targeted at the golem back to the caster. He will also split at 66% and 33% health, triggering Splintered Obsidian and causing an Obsidian Shard to spawn. These mini-constructs also use Spell Reflection, though have far less health.

Do note that the Obsidian Sentinel (and Obsidian Shard) are only immune to targeted magical spells. Ranged physical damage spells, such as from a Hunter, or any other sources of physical damage are not reflected. This does also mean Judgement of Light of a Paladin can be reflected. However, area-of-effect magical spells such as Arcane Explosion are not reflected, nor is any damage from a wand.

The easiest way for a Mage to bring this behemoth down is to form a party including some physical damage dealers, such as a Warrior, Hunter, or Rogue, and take them into Uldaman. However, this does not mean the Mage cannot defeat the sentinel by themselves.

Alone, the Obsidian Sentinel is quite a daunting encounter. Assuming your level is equal to or slightly below 44, you will need to prepare for this fight. Conjure both a Mana Jade and a Mana Agate, and acquire the best mana potion you can find. At level 44, this should be the Superior Mana Potion. Make sure you're ready to go, then zone in via the rear entrance. You should be able to open the door safely, without aggroing any monsters.

When you are prepared, engage the sentinel and bring him back towards the instance entrance, using Frost Nova to buy yourself range (he is not immune to crowd control, nor area-of-effect abilities). Damage him using your wand. At this stage, he hits the hardest, so make sure you are using every resource you need to survive—Ice Barrier and Mana Shield will prove useful—and keep pushing his health down.

Once he reaches a health threshold and splinters, spawning Obsidian Shard, unload the rest of your mana using area-of-effect abilities to destroy them as soon as possible, to trigger Splintered Obsidian and reduce the damage he deals. As soon as they're dead, leave the instance, heal back up, conjure new mana gems, and restart the fight. The fight will be a bit easier, as the sentinel now deals reduced damage thanks to Splintered Obsidian which persists even once you've left the instance (though make sure you don't reset the instance). Repeat this process until he deals so little damage that you can simply burn him from full to zero.

This fight isn't easy solo, and may take several attempts. Do not feel disheartened if you cannot pull it off first try. If you are struggling too much, a 5-man party will have little issue defeating this boss, especially if you can key them in on the tactics. Simply join a group for a normal Uldaman run, and get some extra XP, gear, and gold while you're at it.

I just soloed this quest as a level 38 arcane mage in TBC Classic.

The only hard part is getting 4 stacks of Splintered Obsidian on Obsidian Sentinel.

Each stack reduces damage done by the boss by 60 up to 240 (at 4 stacks the boss will only hit for 1 (ONE) damage).

You have to "cheese" the boss.

Here's my strategy:

"Phase 1" (the "hard part"):

1. Buff yourself with Ice Armor, Dampen Magic, Mana Shield and Frost Ward
2. Spam Frostbolt from max range, and try to stay very close to the instance entrance (the boss will reflect SOME of your Frostbolts).
3. Your ONLY objective at this point is to do enough damage to "proc" Splintered Obsidian on the boss.
4. Once the boss is "Splintered" (an add spawns) IMMEDIATELY exit the instance (you should be almost dead from "tanking" the damage).
5. Eat/drink and go back in, you will have to kill a non elite mob. DON'T cast any direct spells on that mob, it will reflect 100% of the spells, use wand and/or arcane explosion
6. Rinse and repeat steps 1-5 until the boss has 4 stacks of Splintered Obsidian. Now the boss will only hit for 1 damage for the next 1 hour and our only concern is the adds

"Phase 2" (once the boss is at 4 stacks of Splintered Obsidian):

1. Use Mana Shield and wand the boss
2. Once an add spawns AoE it down with Arcane Explosion (DON'T cast direct damage spells, the adds reflect 100% of those!)
3. The adds hit for "normal" damage, so if you get low on health, use Frost Nova get some distance and bandage yourself
4. Rinse and repeat 1-3 until the boss is dead.

Tips/comments:

- You don't need to use any mana potions/mana Jade/Agate/etc. at all, but they could help you tank the boss via Mana Shield while you try to "splinter "him
- Splintered Obsidian lasts for ONE HOUR so there's no rush
- The first "splinter" is the hardest one, because the boss hits for full damage (level 40 elite, hits like a truck :D). After each splinter it gets easier because you receive less damage.
