Sharptalon is a hippogryph that roams the area south of Splinter Tree Post in Ashenvale. It shares the area with slimes, wolves, Forsaken and Night Elf outrunners.

A good way to defeat this foe is to get it to ~60% life and kite it to the guards at Splinter Tree, who will then proceed to finish it off for you, and hopefully if you have done enough damage to it, you will be able to loot Sharptalon's Claw (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=16305).

I've done him as a 26 Blood elf Affliction warlock. Started with Void, dotted him, and kept dots on him. Healed my Void by Health funnel, and in the end, bandaged him once while Sharptalon was feared. Kept draining to counterheal my Health funnels and Life Taps, until I sacrificed my Void; I was full HP due to drains and sharptalon down to ~700 hp. Renewed dots, and chainfeared him, until he died.
If you follow this tactic, I think you can do it without Pots/healthstone (I did bandage once). Had one Nightfall proc.

I have killed him 3 times on my lvl 26 hunter and still haven't got the claw, I've done The Ashenvale hunt, I need this claw because it stands in my guide^^ please help me.

Sadly, i have to report that it is not possible to have guards (any of them) help you kill Sharptalon. I had him to 40%ish, and dragged him to the forsaken camp, but i couldnt loot him after that.

If you're a Feral Druid: first, Hibernate her, cast FF on her, then do Regrowth and Rejuv. on yourself, then attack in Bear Form. Can easily solo it. If you need to heal, just Bash and shift out/heal. Of course, you can also pull her to the Forsaken camp to get a little extra help, but that shouldn't be necessary.

if you're a marksmanship hunter this mob is quite easy to kill, I did it at lvl 21.
just use hunter's mark, send your pet so he gets agro first and mend pet. when mend pet is over give him everything you've got, aimed shots, serpent stings, arcane shots etc etc. if you see your pets health falling faster than sharptalon's health mend pet again after the ranged attacks. repeat the ranged attacks and he'll soon be down xP

very easy found him wandering just off road near splintertree post, was lvl 30 hunter just did as quest to level. was very simple and wasnt tht tough but pet did a lot of dmg, good quest to get a fair bit of xp if you have kill the other 2 animals to :P

This oversized pelican can hit hard for leather or weaker, your best bet is to simply pull em to splintertree once u down his health enough.

I got extremely lucky and solo'd him at 26 as a rogue. Open'd with a cheapshot, and systematically stunned him with gouge, allowing me to fill up energy, pop a pot, bandage and to save evasion till needed. Got me to 128/995 left, in any case, very tough fight for a low level solo (non lock or hunter)

The tip to kill him above is very helpful its easier to kite him to the forsaken camp since he passes right by it but there is a problem sometimes when u kite him there the guards wont attack him but i got lucky when a guard started attacking him and i was able to attack and kite him to the other guards where they started attackign him.

What I did to kill this guy was, well first I found him, then I lured him down to that camp of undead gaurds, I made sure I got a few hit on him first, and they took care of the rest.

The drop rate even before you have done the quest before for his claw is not 100%. I just killed him and it didn't drop, so I gotta wait around for another spawn.

Not very easy for a mage that's lower level. I've tried it twice now. When you kite him into the Forsaken camp they kill him too fast and 80% of your spells miss. Don't bother with this until 27+ :(

28 Druid, soloed. Put HoTs on, Bear Form, Enrage, FFF, DS, spam Maul, i aggroed two mobs so used hots again and herbalism hot. Easy fight.

Easily soloable by a level 26 hunter. Just clear the zone and keep healing your pet :B If you get aggro, trap and disengage, concussive shot and your pet should be able to get aggro before he reaches you x3

Easy soloable by a level 27 warlock, juts dot it and send in your Voidwalker, if its low on health just heal it, it should make enough damage to keep the aggro on itself...

I killed it twice but sadly didn't get the drop :(

Solo'd as a 25 Hunter (Beast Master) with lvl 24 Bear.

Sharptalon comes very close to the road outside of Splintertree Post, stand at 72.25, 68.98, make sure you kill the stealthed Ashenvale Outrunner, Sharptalon will come by on his circuit. Do a ranged attack and start moving straight back (or if health is already an issue, do a disengage and then ranged attack again to get aggro back, he'll start flying your way again), the guards will help you kill him.

I got nothing but made it at lvl 26. As a mage or hunter just pull him to the splintertree post. The guards will finish him.

Sharptalon is a blue flying bird-like creature. You can find it around the round part of the river in Felfire Hill near the splintertree post but watch out for the slimy things and the ashenvale outrunners. I am a level 29 Shaman and I keep getting attacked by them and dying while trying to kill Sharptalon. Sharptalon is level 31 ... Hope this helps!

Sharptalon is a lvl31 specimen of those antlered gryphon thingies the Night Elves use as long-distance traveling mounts (you know, the equivalent to the Horde's Windriders, the Forsaken's Bats and the Humans' Griffons). He patrols between two points: One is close to the road south of the bridge NW of Splintertree where the road leads to Satyrnaar and, eventually, Aszhara, the other is between Warsong Lumber Camp and the small Forsaken camp in the forest.

Since he takes several minutes to patrol his course back and forth, choose your spot to attack him. The area is pretty crowded though by a) those rotting undead slug-like things that Hunters can't track, b) Ashenvale Outrunners (stealthed Nelf NPCs, those as you're supposed to kill for the quest of the same name) and c) random spiders and wolves.

It's probably best to stay on the road, clear the area when he's on the back bit of his patrol, then take him on when he returns. At 28 my Troll Hunter (Campino on Aszune) had no probs with him whatsoever. Standard tactics: Cast Hunter's Mark, send in pet, Concussive Shot, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot, rinse and repeat according to cooldowns. He wore down my pet to half or 1/3 HP but went down smoothly after all.

I had to do this twice, since the first time his name was greyish like when aggroed by someone else. Either he was bugged, or some gimp had taken him on prematurely, legged it or died and aggro didn't reset properly, or whatever. So I took him down, cleared the area while waiting for the respawn, then took him down again. Didn't look at the watch but I'd say it took him 15-20 minutes to respawn.

He only dropped the quest claw, which I looted, but nvm. Skinned him, handed the quest in and called it a day. :)

You want to do him on Aszune but can't solo and don't have anyone to help you out, /t Campino. If I'm on and in the area I'll help you.

Don't bother, though, if you're below lvl 27 and/or don't know how to play your class and/or have no manners. :)

I dunno, but for Horde characters, I think Sharptalon's Claw can be handed in for the Ashenvale Hunt quest in the Splintertree outpost. But that doesn't really answer the question, does it...?

I'm level 26, and just almost took him down. I backed up and let some of the guards hit at him for a bit too, and he went down easy from there, but then I couldn't loot him. Anyone else having the same problem?

If you wait just off the road from Splintertree then always pull him back to the post so the gaurds will help you.

If you're a BM hunter you can mend pet and it'll do must of the work for you, just stand back and concussive, serpent sting, arcane and whatnot.

easy kill and lots of exp i soloed as a lvl 27 mage i got him down was close 2 dying ran over 2 gaurds they finished him off no problems and whats great if you have already killed the bear and the cat in this quest chain after you turn in his claw (2450 exp) you get a a ok cloak and and additional (3005 exp) thats 5500 exp idk but that sounds pretty good to me (also he drop a good lvl 25 blue ring)

Meh, lvl 23 @#$%^&* here, was trying to Kite this dude around, killed him 4 times, but all times guards has come and finished the goddamm job! anyone know a way so u can kite him not into guards? *D Would've gotten the kill if it weren't for the guards >.<

Killed him, a hunter lvl 23 attacked him a bit too, but not for more than 50 dmg :)
Got nice experience and it was well fun(No guards helped me this time) Mana ran out when he had 100 hp left -.- resisted all traps and my Cobras Snake Poison thingie :)

For a moment I thought we were going to do it, maybe if I wasn't distracted by the slimes, or if we had cleared the area first, but anyway first my voidwalker died, I got him resummoned, but by then the pet was almost dead, and the voidwalker couldn't pull enough threat to take the aggro off the hunter and his pet. So the hunter's pet died, then the hunter died, then my voidwalker died again, then I died. I was soul stoned so I rezed resummoned my walker, started again, changed my mind, he had already regenerated almost 3/4 of his health. My shadow bolt is rank 4, and I am speced in destro, he was resisting most of my stuff, and when I did hit, it wasn't for much. Sorry don't know anything about the hunter, just happened to meet him there while I was starting my attack, so we grouped up for it. I am going to level then try again. But ouch none the less.

26 fire mage

No problem kiting him to guards. Problem is he's resisting well over 50 percent of my dps. I just can't kit him forever, need to get in about 700 points of damage (50% of his hp) before guards take over.

Also makes kiting a little tenuous when he resists 3 frost slowing spells in a row. I can still stay away from him, just not with enough time to get off any decent damaging spell.

Finally at lvl 27 I was able to deal enough damage to take him down, I accidentally backed up into the range that the Splintertree guard aggroed on him, but by the time that happened he was already down to less than 200hp and neither I nor my VW was even close to dead, and I still had more than half my manna. Nothing special for the drop, just his talon and some mystery meat, I guess I will have to kill him again to try for better.

Sharptalon is not that hard to beat, you find him at the fork in the road need Splintertree Post, lvl 31, if your low lvl get a friend and murder him

Confirmed that he is NOT lootable when the guards have a hand/lay the final blow, regardless of "who started it."

His respawn time is fairly short.

I'm not sure if you can get the quest item if you haven't spoken to the correct npc's and finished the "The Hunter's Way" quest line.

Cords approx 78:67 - He comes from the left hand side when you leave Felfire Hill (or atleast for moi).

Respawn is pretty quick too.

Edit - Helping a friend get the quest too, but he came from the right hand side this time. (Stupid bird doesn't know whether he's coming or going ;D)

you say there is no loot if guards kill? but if you hit 1 time and kite to the forsaken guards, you will get loot.

Did this at level 26 hunter three different times. First two times I would just kite Sharptalon to guards and when guards where attaking I would continue to shoot at Sharptalon but no loot was available after guards where donw with him.

On third try, when Sharptalon appeared near 71, 69 sicced pet on him, hit him with various shots while backing up towards guards and mended pet when pet's health got low. When Sharptalon had half health, placed pet on offensive to lure him closer to me. When he was close, I started to just hit him with my weapon while pet attacked and guards attacked. This time, when he fell Sharptalon was lootable.

yes! finally got this after three or four failed attempts. The first time I figured I would get to loot as long as I tagged him once with my dagger and let the guards finish him. Nope. The next couple of times I tried to let the guards do most of the work and I try to kill him right at the end. nope, not lootable. Finally I kited him to the guards, but I continued to pound on him as hard as I could. Two guards assisted. Lootable this time. As another poster stated, I think it must be that you have to be responsible for most of the damage. So make sure to hit him as hard as you can. Did this as a lvl 27 rogue.

I've kited Sharptalon to the guards 3 times already. Each time he died, he was read to me, so "my kill". But I've been unable to loot him each time. I tried talking to the quest giver and read everything she had to say about the three beasts but never gave me the quest. Why isn't Sharptalon dropping his claw?

Indeed. I got the same problem.. He dind't gave me the claw after 7 tries, but other loots...
The tip what I gave: run to the guards, is good.
BUT:
YOU NEED THE LAST HIT TO SHARPTALON!, THEN IT'S YOUR LOOT!

actually, as far as i know, and as mentioned before, you need to have done about 50% damage to the creature, then you can let him get finished by the guards, i had little trouble with him as a lvl 23 MM hunter. i used AotC, constantly kiting him with serpent sting, concusive shot, arcane shot and when i could aimed shot, just keep on running, jumping, shooting and running again and as a hunter you should have little problem with him, if you feel like you've gone to far down the road, just trap him, and run in the opposite direction again.

just did it today.. the guide says wait untill 90%... but you need to do more damage then that 50% people have said.

Pull him into the foresaken camp is the easiest but it took me a few tries to be able to loot him.

was soloing ok as a 26 lock until I pulled an outrunner. Then I threw my void walker on that and proceeded to fear dot sharptalon. Eventually I realized the 5 or 6 level 28 undead guards and simply walked over there and let them finish. Easy :P

This guy's tough, I couldnt take him out with my 27 hunt and a mage helping. I'm beast mastery, so I sent my hog in, but it STILL couldnt take half his life down and Sharptalon did a load of crits on him. The god-hawk turned to me and nealry killed me due to aggro, with what little damage I was doing with a green lv 22 bow, then went after the mage.

It's probably easier to melee this guy, rather than spells or ranged, or using other effects like bleed or curses. If you want the easy-kill fasion, his track takes him very close to splintertree. You can pull him to the guards, just make sure you do good damage before they gank him, or (like me) be left out with no xp or loot :(

Same, lvl 23 hunter.

It appears that range damage is on it's own nifty table. Wands and spells are on resist and level, melee is on ac and lvl, but range is independent of all that. That, and the fact that your miss rate with range is the same on a lvl 1 mob and a lvl 60 mob. In pve this won't matter, so no real reason to nerf, but wow, hunters are really, really, powerful.

Solo'd him as a 27 Demon lock. However, he isn't that easy. Had to use a healing pot and a lesser healthstone and only got out with 300 HP because he resisted two of my fears. Luckly my voidwalker picked up the aggro (barely), because he also resisted a lot of taunts. So be prepared for lots of resists.

As a level 25 hunter with a fully equipped cat I have found this one pretty tough. He resists immolation traps, and my melee attacks didn't have great success either. I'd be surprised if I could fare much better at just one level higher. This guy's a 31, after all. Luckily I asked politely and a lvl 42 warrior joined me. :-)

Solo'd at lv 26 with my hunter , to my own suprise.
My plan was to kill it halfway , then drag it to the guards , but when the mob was halfway , me and my pet still had quite some HP left so I decided to try and finish him on my own. I estimate that me and my pet both had about 2/5 of our HP left when he went down.

The most annoying part was that he resisted most of my pets Growls , so I had to kite it a little. In the end , one Growl did go unresisted and then I got free play.

Only dropped the claw , though.

As a priest I solod at 28. Just start at a distance with the mindblast to sw:p combo with a bubble on, take him down to 1/2 hp with wand, then fear him and drain away with mind flay. Piece o' cake.

Took him down with a 23 BM Hunter. Truly lucky is all. I was coming out of Splintertree Post and saw him by the road and figured what the hell. I started off by sending my pet cat in and followed up with Serpent, Concussive, Arcane, and whatever else I could throw at him. Luckily for me the invisible outrunner that stands nearby didn't join in. However, my pet quickly lost aggro and the bird headed right for me. It totally resisted my trap, so I melee'd as best I could. I could see this was going to be a losing battle if I stayed to fight, so I turned around and headed for the gaurds. I was down to a spec of HP when the gaurd jumped in and gained aggro. I continued to pummel the bird with arrows until it was dead. Fortunately for me I had enough damage on him that I was able to loot the claw.

After all that, the bear and cat were peices of cake. :)

Use this macro to see if you have done the pre-requisite quest, The Ashenvale Hunt.

/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(742))

If that's true, make sure the follow up is complete:

/script print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(6383))

If the second one is FALSE, you need to talk to Senani (even though she doesn't have an !) and complete the quest.

After that you're safe to kill sharptalon!

He found me at 74.86 69.87 today while I was skinning a wolf but that's within his normal hunting grounds. 2450 XP at level 32 and 3050 XP for the group completion. at level 32. Not bad at all. I was never able to get the breadcrumb quest from Warcaller Whatshisname in Orgrimmar but just killed the trio and Senani appeared.
