A bunch of named mobs spawn in the ring 1 at a time. After you defeat 1 the next will spawn after a few seconds giving you time to eat/drink up. Prisoners also come periodically to help you fight. Finally Oluf drops the cipher rather than you looting it so it would appear that if you walk in on him already dead you can complete the quest without killing a thing. Can't say for sure though.

Cordnates: Center of the ring
Keep killing attackers in the center of the ring until Oluf shows up. Kill him and loot the Salted Venison. Turn in quest is outside at the camp. Don't bother searching inside. After this quest you should be done with inside and never to return again.

You don't have to kill anything and you can help anyone. It is like a joint quest with whoever. Guys are super easy and the prisoners help a little. You turn in the quest at the entrance on the right when you are leaving

The 4 named mobs you have to fight are

Firjus the Soul Crusher (10,379 HP)
Jlarborn the Strategist (11,976 HP)
Yorus the Flesh Harvester (14,371 HP)
Oluf the Violent (15,968 HP, you can let NPCs to tank you till at least 85%)

And do not make the same mistake I did, do not loot with your bags full. Unlike other loot objects, where you can discard some trash and loot again, the Ancient Cipher on the ground would disappear.

I had to do it again, but it was easy for a 72 mage.

This quest appears to be bugged from time to time. I killed all the mobs twice and couldn't loot the Ancient Cipher.

Abandoning the quest and re-accepting it seemed to fix the problem.

DId it easyly as a lvl 68 preist, dont be scared, they spawn one by one in the middle of the cirlce and u get a lot of help from CPU's

DiD this Like 5 times first 2 same quest the other 3 i abandoned and took it .. the Ciphre dropped but i wasnt able to loot it... in all of the quests i waited in the middle of the circle and waited for theM to Come up... soloed most of them So...i Don't Know Whats Wrong... So i left it and didnt Do it

there is no mob SPAWN for this quest...

Well not after 3.3.3 patch

the guy is straight ahead easy to kill and the item will drop 100%

I'm not sure if you need to kill him or not. I tagged the guy, but another night elf was in the room at the same time. The mob that drops the quest item actually drops it on the floor, so it's not a body loot. It looked like the second player in the room was able to pick it up, too.

As for getting the final guy, you have to kill a series of other named mobs (not the generic guys) before the final guy shows up.

In the circular room where you pick up the quest, in the middle of the room Oluf will spawn. Defeat him and the quest item will spawn on the floor.

[Defeat the gladiators at the Ring of Judgement and face Oluf the Violent. Defeat Oluf and recover the Ancient Cipher.

Return the Ancient Cipher to Glorenfeld at the entrance to the Utgarde Catacombs.]

[Oluf will come out if you defeat the other gladiators. That's 'bout the only way we're getting' that cipher back. Put on your whompin' boots and get busy in the Ring of Judgement. If you do manage to get the cipher back, return it to Glorenfeld o'er near the entrance to these catacombs.
