The FINAL quest ender of the epic Shadowmourne questline.

If you have this quest in your quest log (you should if you have just completed Shadowmourne) the Lich King will also drop the Sealed Chest, it will only drop once when you have the quest and as soon as you finish it it will no longer drop, its one per Shadowmourne.

This quest is the final quest of Wrath of the Lich King. It's a little surprising it is part of the Shadowmourne chain, since only 2 or 3 classes can use it. Perhaps there will be a more general version offered by Tirion?

Either way, just reading the text we have now makes this feel like the end all do all, and probably the most epic quest in the game.

I don't know I for one am glad that theya re finally giving closure to the Arthas issue and moving on to explore other lore. Everything in game has built up to this. I can't wait for the events leading up to the next Xpac.

With blizzards announcement of legendary weapons being a '25 exclusive' thing, it looks like this will most definitely be completable on 25 normal mode, as there has been no specific hardmode requirements in any of the quests leading up to this one. If this is the case, if you're in an average guild that at the very least has killed yogg-saron 25 with all four watchers up and willing to drop some gold into the primordial saronites, you will have a legendary weapon. This is good and bad news for a lot of people, as skilled players who are equally as deserving that do 10 mans (specifically of course 10 man hardmodes) are left out in the cold.

There will be no version of this for casters or any other players. Another epic quest chain you can do will be the quel'delar where it is expected there will be a reward for every class/spec.

EDIT: They seem to have upped the gold reward for this quest by 9g. Now it is totally befitting that of someone who has rid the world of a god-like evil figure. Excuse my sarcasm.

I must say, not only do you get the lovely weapon, you also get 24 gold pieces AND 90 silver.

Some say blizzard gives the players to much gold, but to be honest, 24 gold for killing the Lich King is just about the right sum!

So we get the axe before the final quest? Or maybe it's still Shadow's Edge until you hand in the quest, and THEN once you've beaten The Lich King, Darion makes it into the legendary with his death knight magic? Reading the quest text, to me, makes it sound like he gives you the legendary and commands you to go kill Arthas with it.

The reason I speculate is because the quest before this one, Shadowmourne! is a criteria for the Feat of Strength related to the axe. It just seems odd you'd get the legendary weapon *before* the final quest in the chain. It could just be PTR nonsense.

Edit1:
I assumed you would've had to defeat/kill the final boss of the raid in order to get the axe, considering:

Had to kill Rag for Sulfuras and Thunderfury.
Had to kill original Kel'Thuzad for Atiesh.
Had to kill Illidan for the Warglaives.
Had to beat Kil'jaeden for Thori'dal.
And you had to beat Yogg for Val'anyr.

Seems odd that you'd get the final version of the axe before having to confront the Lich King.

Edit2: Ok, downrated for speculating. Apparently speculation is substandard compared to arguing over 'IS IT A HUNTER WEAPON OR NOT?' or 'lich king iz 2 pwrful to die, y r we killing him'.

Steel yourself, <class>, and guide Shadowmourne to fulfill the purpose of its creation.

Why i read this and keep thinking, "Damm, the Axe it's just for the use against the Lich King Battle, that's why Blizzard remodeled the debuff of the axe just to affect Undead and Demons."

Or i can be definitly wrong. I hope.

My only hope that this isnt an attempt by blizzard to get away with not letting players get their hands on frostmourne. there are few players that wouldnt like to take up his sword, corruption or not, and i only hope that it is a drop from him 25 hardmode or what have you, despite its soul stealing atributes.

Heck, id give my soul to wield frostmorne any day of the week.. not some shadowmorne knock off from the gift shop

25 primordial saronite will not be hard to obtain whether the drop from mobs or are mined inside ICC. just looking at the old raiding mats that were zone specific and required for the current end tier items. and if we assume they drop from mobs then it is also reasonable to assume a similar drop rate such as Heart of Darkness', Nether Vortexes, Sunmotes and so on. and they will find their way onto AH's soon enough and yes at the start of the expasion they will cost you your innosence but the price will stabilise eventually.

i really have no clue why people are commenting on the gold reward for killing the big cheese. the reward is that he is dead, finit, gone, toast. you win game over. why care about money when YOU KILLED THE LICH KING.

previous legendary weapons have been the property of the boss you take it from with a few exceptions. (atiesh, val'anar) but Sulfuras, Thunderfury, the blades of Azzinoth and that bow from KJ. Shadowmourne is a weapon with no origin, you create it for yourself, it exists as a substitute for Frostmourne as that sword will not be a useable item, ever, period.

also just the idea that a final boss drops weaopns and/or armour has always confused me. if you can kill the boss without using any items that drop from it, why have it drop combat items...you dont need them. would make more sense to drop boss specific pimp items or titles.

I just don't like this.
Lorewise, some of the most important entities from Warcraft have been made daily raids.

Illidan, Kil'Jaeden,Onyxia,Other Dragon Aspects,some Old Gods. And now Arthas.

I bet that they will made him just "defeatable". After the fight is over, he will probably just sit down again on his throne and freeze again to regain his power, leave some frozen chest with loot, and continiue making future plans about Azeroth.

we only defeated kil'jadean.it won't be a surprize if we will only "defeat" lich king.but he can't run away well where to run?in lordaeron where scarlet hunt him?back in northrend where argent crusade will hunt him?in outland?well i think that he even dosen't know what is outland.is no longer a servant of burning legion so on argus definitly no.if we will defeat him cleary not through a portal so i think that or we will kill him or we will separate arthas body from ner'zhul.these 2 chances.if we will separate the body it will be much complicated for lore.think about it.he is the crown prince of lordaeron so if the humans il gain back the lordaeron under arthas menethil's command it won't be the an starting area for undeads.arthas will fight sylvana's undead all over the cataclysm expansion and if will be an 5'th exapnsion then arthas will probably awake the lost lands of the humans.if the humans will turn back in lordaeron definitly blood elfs will join ally so it will be much complicated if we will separate the body.let's let blizzard think about this problem.

i will gladly want to be a way to reedem arthas's soul.i know the story of his heart the "There is no more ner'zhul no more arthas there is only lich king".i think that if we will reedem arthas soul beacuse if will be a way to "break" frost mourne maybe we will realase the souls of many other major antagonists:

uther the lightbringer-killed with frostmourne
terenas menethil II-killed with frostmourne
maybe sylvana will become again high elf / blood elf.
entire army of lordaeron entire city of capital city,andorhal ,stratholme and why not scarlet army.i think that behind arthas and ner'zhul is another entity more powerfull.arthas was not hungry of power.ner'zhul was not hungry for power was enslaved by kil'jaedan.they will not act in this way.so i thhink that an high and most powerfull agent of burning legion to ensure that scourge is "scourging" the world.the final story is very much complicated

Lol !@#$ the gold guys...You can gather the gold that fast that you can't imagine.The 3.3.0patch is the badest patch I wasying yesterday the new instances and other and i've noticed 3 bugs (idk about my firend how much did he notice).
They've so fakd up wow now,that it's unbelivable. The best part of wow was TBC, all was balanced and nothing didn't needed an explanation.
The Frostmourne is the strongest Two Handed weapon.Also its a bit unbalanced.You can feel yourself like a Game Master on private server. 344dps, guys... that about 9k physical dmg with a decent gear.I can't imagine a warrior while doing Bladestorm. I just can't wait to see how will Cataclysm look like. The badest thing i know is wery hard to level. Approxanetly you need to kill about 150-200 mobs that grant 11k exp for level 80-81. I hope that Illidan,Lich king and the upcoming last boss in Cataclysm would be fully balanced.

Lets just expect that Lich King will fall soon and the bosses aren't pain in arse.

Basic rule of thumb:
As long as the game keeps going, there is always going to be a bigger bad, ready to show up as soon as the current "greatest evil" falls.

Currently, I'd have to go with any Old Gods as being the biggest currently. It took a special fortress and several Titans just to keep a single One sealed away. Anything that can take over Ulduar without even moving is pretty high on the totem pole.

So, yeah, I guess if you have enough money, you've got yourself a Legendary. In the same way that buying Elementium Bars means you own a Thunderfury.

You make it sound like elementium bars were hard to come by or something. We crafted 4 TF`s in my guild by pooling the resources and making guild alliances. There were 6 top tier guilds all competing at the time and attempting to be the best pushing into BWL at the time. We also would spend one night simply farming goblins for the ore. Tier guilds weren`t stupid on getting this stuff made. The more guilds that got into BWL the cheaper elementium became, in the end it worked out to being around 1000g for all the bars by the time Naxx was released. And that was when gold meant something.

Coupled with the new weekly raid quest, this means there will be a LOT more available on the auction house

I disagree, I assume when you say a lot you mean in comparison to Crusader orbs in 3.2, but durring 3.2 the sources of badges to buy Orbs were Ony 10/25 (3 badges each) Koralon 10/25 (2 badges each) and the daily heroic (2 a day) resulting in a possible 24 badges per week, and at 15 badges per orb thats 1.6 orbs per week you could get (without ToC raiding, I'm not including ToC raiding because the comparison wouldn't be equivalent until the rest of ICC opens)

Now in 3.3 we get our weekly Raid (5 badges) and our first random heroic (2 a day) resulting in19 a week (23 a week when the new VoA boss when it comes out) and at 23 badges each that is ~.82 Primordial Saronite a week (or exactly 1 when the new VoA boss comes out) without ICC raiding.

So in other words, they are less available which will cause the price to go up, and people want them ALOT more since you need them to for Shadowmourne, which will cause the price to go up. This can easily be seen on my server, when 3.2 came out crusader orbs went for about 800-1000g and right now Primordial Saronite is selling for 4k+.

It seems very strange to me, that it qoutes "Lich king defeated" maybe blizzard don't want to screw up as in TBC letting players kill Illidan, so maybe we won't kill the Lich king but just defeat him, my 2 cents.

Its been said countless times that it is no longer Arthas, but Ner'zhul. Even Uther, a soul absorbed in frostmourn when it first began said this. Frostmourn is a weapon that Ner'zhul used to trick arthas to become his puppet. Even when he destroyed stratholme it was under the influence of Ner'zhul. Also to the final boss debate, Kil'jeaden was defeated, not killed, and Sargaras is still alive too. So it would make sense if they were part of a new expansion.

IMO the real threat to the world will be when Titans will find out about Algalon's failure

Well, the fact a bunch of creations of the titans' own creations could defeat Algalon would likely convince them that Azeroth may potentially be their best allies. As Algalon himself says "Perhaps it is your imperfection that which grants you free will. That allows you to persevere against cosmically calculated odds. You prevailed where the Titans' own perfect creations have failed." And then arranges the reply code to ensure Azeroth's survival. At this point, whenever the titans get the message, I'd like to think they'll take an interest in it and one of them may potentially investigate. Eventually, I expect this plotline will result in a final stand between one or more titans and Sargeras himself. But that will likely play out over several more expansions.

It seems like a good idea to kill the Lich King, but as Uther says in Halls of Reflection, there MUST BE A LICH KING!
No matter what, there will be a Lich King. You kill this one, another will take his place, so is the will of Frostmourne. No matter what you do, there will be a Lich King and an Undead Horde that he controls (could be a She, but then it would be the Lich Queen, might be something that Blizz decides for a future expansion, make Jiana Proudmore become the new Lich Queen, that'd be an interesting twist don't you think?).

This fight will be intense, filled with loads of "Army of the Dead" casts by the Lich King, Tirion Fording or w/e will show up with his Ashbringer, it's almost a guarantee, and he'll either get the final blow on the Lich King to destroy him (Because only the Ashbringer can kill him, if I remember correctly, and even if that's not the case, it'd make for a badass cinematic.)

Well to all who are going to be doing this fight whenever they release it, get ready with a few hundred to a few thousand gold your dedicating to repair bills, because I can guarantee that you will not get this on the 1st try.
Good luck on getting Shadowmourne, and good luck killing the Lich King.
But just remember, your efforts will remain pointless and futile, because this Lich King is easily replaced. Just as was the last, which is why Arthas is the current one, there had to have been a Lich King before him.. Or else how could the sword exist, and how could it control?

Well The Lich King must pay for his betrayel and for all the lives he stolen.Btw i like Arthas but he gone mad when he got the sword.Illidan Stormrage wanted to destroy the lich king(in warcraft that was the helm traped in the frozen throne) but Arthas defeited him and got there firs.But before he went to Northrend Sylvanas shooted a poison at him that was made to kill him but the dam betrayel didn't die.When he defeited Illidan at the frozen throne he sayd to him to go to Outland and never come back.Well i can tell u many things about the legendary fight between Illidan and Arthas but i think that this is enought.

You know in a battle such as this there will be at least 1 ncp hero to intervene from the lich king killing your raid. It happened on illidan one of the heroes from wc3, and you know its bound to happen on this battle, why even say the lich king is unbeatable (i say unbeatable cause if you kill him someone else will take his place) when you have people roaming the world such as thrall, jania, fordring, sylvanas, king varian and many more who can come to your aid, there were few who actually wanted illidan dead if you think about it, there are hundrads that want to kill arthas personally any which who can aid you in this battle and who probably will. Its pointless in saying hes unkillable untouchable, truth is with the npcs in which could possibly come to your aid, the chances of you actually beating the lich king are pretty high imho. In anycase, arthas is no different then any other "known" boss from wc3, after weeks (maybe days who knows) of nerd raging, he will be dead and looted like any other boss.

Primodial saronite only goes for 2-2.5k on my server..even when patch just came out they were only 3k.But some idiots tried to make a killing and sell them for 10-20k....same amount for a battered hilt...which was pointless because u can buy a quel'delar for 10k,but u need 25 primo's for shadowmourne, so it would cost 25x as much for a weapon tht is maybe 2x better.

if any of you have actually looked into it you would know that Arthas does not die instead tirion comes up and exercises ner'zhul out of him but since there has to be a lich king someone will have to take his place but arthas was weak minded his soul was getting eatin by frostmourne over a few years so when he put on the helmet he didnt have the strength left in him to keep control over his body

there has also been lots of differnet leaks about the new lich king one of them is Thrall after the fight with the lich king Jaina is attacked by something and Thrall puts on the Helmet to try to save her
another one i heard is garrosh hellscream wanting inlimited power he would grab the helmet and put it on

First: "C'thun, Illidan Stormrage, Yogg-Saron, and now the Lich King"
C'Thun and Yogg-Saron are not closely on the same level of power as Illidan Stormrage or the Lich King.
The first two are Old Gods, and way more powerful than the second two.
There is a real great pararell between Illidan and Arthas, both were always about the asme level of power, sharing many aspect, but in a way different way. Remember, Warcraft III TFT's last mission called "Symphoni of Frost and Fire"
And yes, Illidan is all about Demonic power(and thus Arcane) and fire, while Arthas is all about Shadow (Death, undeath) and Frost, and while Arthas originally was a paladin, Illidan originally trained as a druid (even if he never acquired anything on the druidic ways, and he quickly made progress in arcane)
You can also find similiraties between the Black Temple and Icecrown Citadell. Even the musics are in pararell.

And by the way, the raids nowadays are made up for 25 players, not 40.

Exactly my thoughts. If you consider that some of the oldest Azeroth lore can be summed up as:

Old Gods Ran the Planet with the Elementals.
Titans came along and kicked the Old Gods Butt single-handedly.
Titans rebuild the planet in their own design with their own creations.
Titans left...

Who's to say the pantheon won't come back in person? If they like what they see we're safe, but what if they don't?

Personally i see plenty more Legendary items coming in the near future,i mean... before Ulduar was released there were 4 Legendary items (if you could the warglaives as 1) now 2 more have been added (well... Shadowmourne is near-future stuff so im counting it) and if you look at the Wowhead Cataclysm guide, there is a screenshot of a guild achi for 10 legendary things... expect more legendarys in Cataclysm and expect many long hours of farming to get them!

For all of you hopefuls out there, we wont be killing Sargareas after Deathwing, lets face it ... none of expected Deathwing to pop up and Blizz just wont make it that easy to guess, there will be a few more twists and turns and several expansions before sargareas becomes our target, and even then there will be loads of things in the way of us, prepare to meet the Titans an Xpack or two after Cataclysm though... then again, thats just ME going off and being hopeful.

Though does anyone stop to think,Arthas has never died before..He is still a living person. Imagine the Lich King arthas being reborn as undead. Kel'Thuzad did it,why not Arthas?

Although Arthas hasn't died, his soul is no longer actually his. when he picked up Frostmourne he basically sold his soul to the Lich King. Then when he and The Lich King joined, there really wasn't any of Arthas' soul left. there is the tiny bit stopping him from destroying the world, but that probably isn't enough to create another undead after he is killed.

On the other hand, Kel'Thuzad was still fully human, and had his own will, more or less.

He was not created by Old Gods. In addition, the Titans are most likely, vastly more powerful than the Old Gods, except they had no option but to imprison them because the Old Gods were symbiotic to all the living beings in Azeroth. If they died, we would've died as well.

The Titans were actually weaker than the Old Gods. It took the entire Pantheon (9 Titans, I believe) to defeat the three major Old Gods and seal them up.

However, I do think that Yogg-Saron and C'thun (the weakest of the Old Gods, who were imprisoned in mortal areas rather than the Well of Eternity) were roughly as powerful as a Titan, and if stronger, barely so. Certainly, in the state that players face them, they are far weaker.

I get the Legendary axe Shadowmourne and i go to kill th Lich King ,THE LICH KING(the one and only) and what i got......56 Gold!They Couldn't think somethink out better then 56g?Something!Anything!An Epic gem or a sigil,a Trinket,a libram....No only just dirty 56 gold! Congrats Blizzard!

WoW has many strange points. First: how can a person be at two times at the same moment (e.g. Jaina Proudmoore in Theramore and in Icecrown Citadel). Second: How could a 40-man raid of levels 60 defeat the OLD GOD, which the titans worked hard to bring down? And after that, 25 people could just bring down another old god (more powerful than the first one)... I wonder when we get level 99 we will be titan-like beings and create our own worlds and servants... Just a hit to kill C'thun...

(This is meant to be a joke, so don't be so rough to press the downrate button, but since you'll all do it anyways, then.........)

Edit: And now, it's worth nothing. A legendary doesn't stay legendary, as I sadly moan.

after killing 1000 mobs in icc,
after defeating several of the bosses,
and 50 bosses in general...

if you look at the Screenshot posted under Unsealed Chest the GM response says that the Chest only drops when you have the quest "The Lich King's Last Stand", does this mean if you don't turn in this quest you can get multiple drops of the unsealed chest from one person?

So 1000s of soldiers have been killed by the Lich King and you have saved the world from one of the worst things that have ever happened to Azeroth and everyone says thanks, gives you barely any money, then your just told to go away, nobody cares about you and your never remembered. What a way to thank someone who did one of the most important things ever.

the 300,000 with ashen verdict seems a bit redundant- unless you've deliberately missed trash while collecting your 50 shards, i think its fair to say you'll already be exalted.

Why do people cry about getting just 56 gold? remember its not just YOU who gets the gold.

Imagine several hundred people doing this quest and all of them needing 56 gold.

Old Gods don't even have that much lore. Well, they didn't. Plus, they are merely defeated rather than killed.

Oh they got a lore, it's just the question if u would call it a lore .... i mean ... they ruled azeroth when the titans left (1st time) but then they we're riped apart cause a machine (Algalon) told them that the old gods we're corrupting azeroth ...

Iam only doing this chain quest because of the GOLD it gives

there are 9 quests each gives 31g
so 9 x 31 = 279g!
and if i vendor that sh*it weapon i get 50g
so...
279g + 50g = 329g! F*CK YEAH!
