Upon completing this quest, a short scripted event is initiated. A nearby cleric will unmask himself as Tirion Fordring, Highlord of the Silver Hand. He will equip the artifact, which is revealed to be Ashbringer. Dialogue follows:

Cleric of the Crusade says: That will be enough, Irulon.
Cleric of the Crusade removes his disguise.
Lord Irulon Trueblade says: Lord Fordring, you mustn't reveal yourself!
Highlord Tirion Fordring says: The boy's death and, in fact, the deaths of all of the knights involved in the redemption of the blade could have been avoided.
Highlord Tirion Fordring says: Their passing wieghs heavily upon my soul.
Lord Irulon Trueblade says: The path of freeedom has always been beset with tragedy sire. We could not risk losing you. The Order could not have survived such a blow.
Highlord Tirion Fordring says: It should have been me that carried the blade. The burden was mine to bare.
Highlord Tirion Fordring says: But you are right, Irulon. The price of our freedom will undoubtedly cost thousands more of their lives.
Highlord Tirion Fordring yells: Do you hear me Arthas? The Silver Hand comes for you! Your kingdom shall crumble beneath the weight of justice! By the light!

My question is this, though: after Fordring aquired the Ashbringer from the young Mograine (at the attack at Light's Hope Chapel), how did he manage to lose hold of it again that it wound up in the catacombs under Utgarde Keep? Did he just have a team of people carry it into Northrend for him and they somehow screwed up and all died? Why would Fordring not carry it himself into Northrend?

so I gave them a legendary weapon and Im still neutral with them? if I would get one I would be much more than friendly to the person... and why does it look like a blue quality sword as an object https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=186607 ?

I believe that Tirion did not carry it into Northrend so he could actually get there safe.
Him, carrying The Ashbringer entering Northrend. So much epicness would alert Arthas :P

So, I just redeemed the Ashbringer from the hands of the Scourge, most likely saving Azeroth's one hope at defeating the Lich King once and for all, and yet, all I get as a reward is 4 gold and 7 silver.

Judging from Tirion's dialog after completion of this quest, it appears that a lesser member of the Argent Crusade was entrusted with it in order to smite the Undead Vrykul of Utgarde Keep. Having somehow been overpowered, due to a lack of competence, the paladin who wielded it was fatally injured. The blade, having been lost, remained inside the depths of the keep, unapproachable by the undead.

First off, let me start by saying this quest doesn't give the Ashbringer what it deserves. If you rescued to Ashbringer, it would have been in a series of quests and the ending dialogue woulda been more than a few lines.

Secondly, didn't Tirion have the Ashbringer shortly before departing for Northrend? Because at the end of the DK starter chain, Mograine tosses it over to Tirion, who wtfbbqpwns the Lich King with it, forcing him to retreat. And he thought that for whatever reason he couldn't carry the thing to Northrend by himself?

And those paladins are lame anyways. Being fatally wounded by some level 71ish mobs with the Ashbringer within reach is like dying in Dire Maul with both Warglaives.

I'm pulling straws here, but quite possibly, it could've been something to do with a suspected treachery in the Argent Dawn's midst (indeed, we find out a traitor in Father Inigo Montoy later on.) Quite possibly, the sword was separated to keep Tirion safe while it was "fully redeemed," but man, I wish they were cleared on that part. Still, awesome enough quest.
