This is in fact a white drop level Item when I got one.
I found apon opening a Succulent Clam Meat and a Siren's Tear inside.
They seem really rare though, I must of been killing hundreds of Winterfin Murlocs before it dropped.

The brooding clam is a referance to the outcry by a very vocal player when clams started to stack, arguing clam stacking was hurting the farmers for the noobs. Blizzard responded with a long, comical list of solutions to his complaint, with joke solutions to his problem of "clam stacking trinket" "0.1%drop from a single mob in Dire Maul" "5000g Clam Stacking Training" "Defeating the rare boss Oystular, Lord of the Clams" and many others. I can find the link for this list, so sorry about that, but I am sure you can find it if that is what you seek.

You should read that post linked by Ciel, it's really funny. Obviously bliz didn't think that the argument was worth taking seriously (niether do I, clams not stacking was really annoying)

Okay, clearly this has caused an outrage beyond what we expected. The designers called an emergency meeting and while we discovered that it's too late to back out this poorly-conceived implementation, we are exploring a couple of options for all you non-casuals out there:

-- A clam-stacking trinket. You have to equip it like your riding crop.

-- In addition to cold-weather-flying, you can learn clam-stacking in Dalaran.

-- A long attunement that involves trips to LBRS for Horde and BRD for Alliance.

-- Tediously crafting a clam-stacking gear set that will be useful for certain encounters.

-- An Achievement reward for collecting 20,000 clams to be titled "How do you like DEM clams?"

-- A bonus for reaching Exalted with Timbermaw Hold AND Wintersaber Trainers.

-- Beating Captain Skyshatter. At level 60. With a bad ping. In the rain.

-- The clam book has a 0.02% drop rate on Dead Man's Pass or Blade's Edge ogres.

-- Collecting "Clam Scraps" from AV that you feed to the NPCs in order to summon Oystolar the Mollusc Lord in the Field of Strife.

-- Getting 100 other players to sign your clam charter.

-- Collecting 1,000,000 linen from Ragefire Chasm in order to open the Clams of Ahn'Qiraj.

-- Kind of like paid character transfers, but for clam-stacking.

-- You can respec to clam-stacking in between respecing for raids and Arenas.

-- A buggy clam-stacking mod that you will need to update after each and every patch.

-- You see, there's this clam-stacking book in Dire Maul as a rare drop. You get the book, do all sorts of crazy stuff that ends up with the book being breathed on by Mutanus the Devourer.

-- A clam book lying in plain sight in the Barrens next to Mankirk's wife.

Ironically (or maybe not), clams stack now, but when you open them, the meat and pearls do not automatically stack.

I've never really understood that phrase. I mean, it's perfectly reasonable to want a cake you already have; it's not like there's anything else you can do with a cake (except maybe hide in one if you're a stripper).

Well, the original phrase I think was to eat your cake and have it too -- so, the other way. That you'd use up your cake, and then still want it around (so you could eat more of it, presumably).

And now you know!

Got one of these while killing sharks at Onslaught Harbor in Icecrown for Blood in the Water. Can't find these specific sharks in the database though.

Please tell me the drop rate on these is incorrect. Clams a rare drop? So the only efficient way to obtain Northsea Pearls is from doing Winterfin Clam turn-ins?

Since everyone seems to have missed this, these clams have a much higher chance of dropping gems (66% for the Northsea pearl and 34% for the Siren's Tear, versus, according to my own research , done over 4 different characters, somewhere around 1/10 of that (less than 10% for Northsea Pearls and less than 5% for Siren's Tears)).

All in all I think going with the frenzyheart was a batter choice for me, I have no need for that fugly drake XD. I seem to make about 200-300g on there dailies not just from the quests themselves but from the look from killing the Oracles. About every other kill drops a clam and that is just pure gold if you get lucky.

Was doing Frenzyheart daily to slaughter 50 Oracles and one of them dropped this thing - had meat and Northsea Pearl - no luck with the Tear.
