Currently in the 'PTR', this hilt is purchasable from the Glyph vendors in Dalaran though I'm sure Blizzard will add an awkward way of being able to get your hands on it once it goes live.

I've seen it drop in the Forge of Souls, but I'd bet it drops in all 3 of the new Icecrown instances.

The quest starting item has a chance of dropping from any of the 3 ICC Heroic (and ONLY Heroic) dungeon wings.

Update 1: As of 12/10/09, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was lowered in the ICC 5 man Heroics. Source :-( It is now an very rare drop from the ICC Heroics

Update 2: As of 12/16/2009, the drop rate of the Battered Hilt was increased very slightly due to Blizz feeling they nerfed it too much. However... the Hilt can no longer drop from the non elite skeletons in Pit of Saron anymore (Blizz apparently didnt like people farming them for the Hilt) Source It is still a really rare drop from the ICC Heroics

Once you acquire this item, go to the Argent Tournament, and just south of it is Quel'Delar's Rest. Turn this in there.

Here's the entire quest chain, with simple descriptions and quest links for the Horde versions.

The Battered Hilt
Bring the Battered Hilt to Myralion Sunblaze at Quel'Delar's rest, south of the Argent Tournament Grounds.
What The Dragons Know
Speak to Krasus at the top of Wyrmrest Temple.
The Silver Covenant Scheme (Alliance version is called "The Sunreavers' Plan)
Obtain the Orders by killing an NPC in the Dalaran Sewers. Make sure you kill the right one.
A Suitable Disguise
Obtain a Borrowed Tabard from Shandy Glossgleam; He is upstairs in the Threads of Fate: if you are standing in front of the stairs with the Violet Citadel to your back, it is to the right (to the left is the toy store).
An Audience With The Arcanist
Retrieve the Ancient Dragonforged Blades tome from Arcanist Tybalin. Use the disguise and go in the Alliance section of Dalaran.
Return To Myralion Sunblaze
Bring the Ancient Dragonforged Blades to Myralion Sunblaze at Quel'Delar's Rest.
Reforging The Sword
Obtain 5 Infused Saronite Bars and the Forgemaster's Hammer and use them to make the Reforged Quel'Delar. (AKA: Run the Pit of Saron. The infused bars are near the entrance; don't forget you have to kill the boss, too.)(It appears this can be done on Normal Difficulty.)
Tempering The Blade
Temper the Reforged Quel'Delar in the Crucible of Souls. (AKA: kill the final boss of Forge of Souls; use the quest item nearby.)(It appears this can be done on Normal Difficulty.)
The Halls Of Reflection
Bring your Tempered Quel'Delar to Sword's Rest inside the Halls of Reflection. (AKA, obviously, run Halls of Reflection.)(It appears this can be done on Normal Difficulty.)
Journey To The Sunwell
Speak with Halduron Brightwing at the entrance to the Sunwell Plateau on the Isle of Quel'Danas.
Thalorien Dawnseeker
Visit Thalorien Dawnseeker's Remains and obtain his blessing to wield Quel'Delar. (Go around behind SWP to the Dead Scar (southern end of Isle of QD zone, not in the SWP raid instance) and kill a bunch of mobs.)
The Purification of Quel'Delar
Immerse your Tempered Quel'Delar in the Sunwell. Speak to a Warden of the Sunwell when you are ready to enter the Sunwell Plateau. (Possibly different versions of this for sword/mace?)
A Victory For The - (sword or mace)
Bring the Restored Quel'Delar to the NPC at the Violet Citadel in Dalaran.

It's important to note that a hilt obtained on the Horde side cannot be used on the Alliance side, and vice versa.

Note that "The purification of Quel'Delar" gives you one of two quests,
One for those who can get swords, which is A Victory For The Sunreavers (Swords)
and one for those who cant get swords which is A Victory For The Sunreavers (Other)

Incorrect. After getting the Battered Hilt, you DO NOT need to run the instances on Heroic to complete the pieces of the quest chain, you can do them on
normal mode, therefore you can get the Battered Hilt, and complete the whole quest chain in the same day.

Following the guide above, this quest-line only takes a few hours to complete. Even shorter if you have a few people willing to help you out. Completely worth it!

I still think it's nerfed too much. I've ran the random heroic and the 3 ICC heroics every day this week. Plenty of trash epics but not one single Battered Hilt drop. AH price going for 18k on my server. It's freaking nuts.

Unfortunately not my friend. The quest line can only be completed once, per-character, and the non-sword items are only available to those who do not have the required proficiency to wield swords at all. At least as far as I am aware, someone can correct me if I am wrong.

On a side note, for anyone not wanting to pay the ubsurd price on the AH, or get the sick feeling of losing a roll on it, most of the trash in Pit of Saron is soloable by a number of classes.

I for one am a tankadin in mostly triumph badge gear and find it pretty easy to kill the Wrathbone laborers who are completely melee and the Warlock guys with the skelington (deliberate typo ^^) minions on heroic. The instance can be soft resetted to repop them.

I use Seal of Light and Judgement of Light and Sanc, and I can dps the Laborers down, leaving the high mana cost spells out (cons/AS). Just takes a while <.<

Also the Warlock guys hit pretty hard with shadow bolts (5-6K on me) but Avengers Shield, HoJ and Holy Wrath shuts them up. Cleanse there conversion beam thing, and again, it becomes a war of attrition. Shadow Resist helps too when you have to eat one, which happens from time to time.

I'll leave tactics for other classes up to those who know best, but as far as I am aware Hunters and druids at least are capable as well, and I would hazard warriors too.

Good luck if you're after this item guys, I for one want it for my ret set. I've been at it for 2 days now :( Not planning on selling it, but good luck and happy hunting. :)

Just an FYI for cross server instances/groups. You can NOT transfer anything other then Conjured items and loot that is from that instance. So, Gold, enchants, pots, and other things are not able to be transferred.

Thus if you have someone in your group that is going to give you gold for it... they better have some way of getting onto your server :P

Please correct me on this if I'm wrong.

You cannot trade green/blue BoE drops, only BoP drops can be traded. (unless you're same server, then normal trade rules apply)

This item is very hard to get since all 5 people in the group always put "Need" (Ninja) so that they can sell it for 13k gold.

***Blizzard should put this item as BOP and unique so that once you get the Battered hilt and get the quest, you can't get it anymore and the loot system should automatically pass it.***

I myself got unlucky with it and a priest that already had the item from the Hilt , took it once more for AH. My point is that there's more chance you'll get a Warglaive from Illidan than this great item that's unfortunately BOE... very sad. Good luck with those rolls anyway.

You can use two Quel'delars as a warrior. You can have multiple 80's that need Quel'delar. Sorry you lost the roll.

Finally had it drop in HoR this afternoon. First time I've seen it drop and I actually won it so needless to say I'm quite happy. Gonna do the quest instead of selling it. Just seems appropriate.

How about this fail... it dropped for us... as I asked everyone if they needed on it, the roll expired. Everyone had needed on it, and I did not roll. The person who won it was the only person in the party from another server, so we couldn't even reroll. =/

I still belive you should not need this item. It is just not proper etiquete. However, if you do not need it, you will not recive it because some dude will probably need it. And for CoS drake, everybody passes on my runs. nobody ever needs them anymore.

I got mine from Heroic FoS trash.

I would encourage anyone who wins this drop to do the quests and get the weapon unless you already have better. I had a lot of fun running the quest line, and it felt like an epic item because of the quests. I was able to get into a part of Dal I was never in because I don't have any leveled toons with the opposing faction and see a bit more of the game going into and using the Sunwell.

Yes, you can make some quick gold, but the chances of seeing another drop again and winning the roll is slim.

As a Mage with Teleports this quest takes less than half an hour to run through. There is no need for any assistance, every element of the quest is extremely easy.

Dropped for my Shaman 2 days ago in H FoS, trash right before the Devourer of Souls.
Tried selling it for one day then took it and ran the quest chain.
The quest chain is awesome! Having never seen the Sunwell, this was a real treat.

This battered old sword hilt has seen better days. Before the hilt was snapped from the blade, it must've been a magnificent example of the blacksmith's art.

The graceful symbols and exotic gemstones decorating the hilt suggest that the weapon may have belonged to a powerful person. Surely, the Sunreavers would be interested in hearing about the recovery of such an artifact. Seek out their representatives at Quel'Delar's Rest, to the south of the Argent Tournament Grounds.
