Phantom Ghostfish seems to be a random catch, i caught it not in a nettlefish pool which populates the area, but just fishing in the open water.

Phantom Ghostfish must be used within 1 min or it dissapears from your bag and you must fish again for it. after eating the fish the quest completes.

By the way, eating the phantom ghostfish turns you invisable for a brief time.

It has taken me around 10 minutes to catch the ghostfish anywhere in the pond in the middle of Sholazar Basin. Like Ograthian said above, it does not need to be in any of the Nettlefish pools.
After catching the Ghostfish, eat it. You only have one minute to do this.

Then you can go along your way and turn it in at your own pace.

Does anyone know that if you are still a lower level fishing, is it possible to catch the quest fish? I have been fishing in The Heart for awhile now, and it's been a few Nettlefish and some junk.

EDIT: The Ghost Fish is attainable at any level of fishing.

It took me 20 catches to get, with fishing skill 396, Nat Pagle's boots and rod, and fishing hooks from Old Man Barlo, so 521 or so. Fished out one Nettlefish node and caught it a few casts later in open water.

EDIT: Rec'd 8g 40s, Pygmy Oil, Unusual Compass, and Strand Crawler pet.

Nice! I got a Jeweled FIshing Pole on patch day - it's a blue pole with +30 fishing on equip. It is also gaudy as all heck (looks like a BE designed it). Once Wowhead updates with it, I'll post a screenshot.

This fish is caught in the middle of Sholazar Basin (50,61). Eat the fish within 1 minute of catching it to complete the quest.

Facts

You do not need to cast into a pool.
This should take 1-10 casts.
This fish can be caught at any level.
Turns you invisible after eating the fish.
Rewards Kirin Tor reputation and another random reward.

Just completed this quest on the live patch 3.1, and it took me about 5-8 minutes. Upon starting it I was 260 fishing, along with a +20 rod and no other equipment. I caught the Phantom Ghostfish along with a Nettlefish, which leads me to believe (not sure if any of you ever found this) that's what the quest means by 'hiding among the suckerfish' of this place.

Anyway, I received a Bag of Fishing Treasures, from which I got 9g 55s 53c, a Glow Worm (+100 lure), Worthless Piece of Violet Glass (three), and Deviate Fish (two).

I think this quest must be bugged! I've been fishing in river's heart for almost 4 hours today and I've skilled up from 181-305 without catching this fish. I've dumped the quest and started over twice. I've used glowing baubbles, worms, etc. Nothing seems to help.

I've had no problems catching this fish on another toon. Just as others have mentioned, I've been able to catch it in about 10-20 minutes tops.

Is anyone else NOT able to catch it?

I fished in pools for about an hour, figuring I'd try for the turtle mount and the quest item at the same time...bad idea.

An hour later I attempted out of pools and in 5 casts got the ghostfish.

I don't know if the pool fish override the ghostfish, but I'd recommend NOT fishing in pools.

The quickest way to get from Dalaran to Sholazar Basin is taking the quest Where in the World is Hemet Nesingwary? You get his quest from Archmage Pentarus. Just take the quest, talk to him again and get ported to Sholazar Basin. When you get there, drop the quest. This will allow you to use Archmage Pentarus over and over again.

This quest has made River's Heart pvp central (at least on my server, Stormscale)... so many vulnerable people fishing to get this done. It got so bad the other day I had to enlist help to keep me guarded while I fished and I did the same for the other person. So if you are on a pvp server, be careful with this one.

If you're on a PVP server, having this fishing daily turns River's Heart into a gankfest. This is what I do to get my daily done.

Stand above one of the waterfalls that empty into River's Heart.
Adjust your position to get "River's Heart" in your location status.
Toss your bobber into the water next to you and start fishing.

You don't need to be in River's Heart to get the Ghostfish. The gankfest was driving me insane, so I was passing some time fishing in other areas in the zone, and lo and behold, I got the Ghostfish. Seems it can be caught anywhere within Sholazar Basin.

Spent about 10 minutes attempting to catch ghostfish in Nettlefish pools, to no avail.

After 12 casts in open water, I got it.

It looks like a pygmy suckerfish with orange mouth instead of yellow.

Took me 15 minutes at 190 fishing (+75 lure) in the middle of River's Heart.

Not fishing in nettlefish pools.

When you get the fish, eat it and you get phased out to invisible for a few seconds. You can right click the debuff right away if you wish to use the flight master to go back to dalaran.

My fishing was 75 when I started this quest. At 147, I finally caught the ghostfish and quickly ate it. Just some head's up that, while it is true you can catch it at any level, it definitely appears more difficult when you have a lower fishing skill. I'd recommend buffing your fishing rod while doing this quest.

Once you've caught and eaten the fish, don't log out... I logged this morn after getting quest credit, then logged. An hour later I was back, went to turn in the quest, questgiver had a ! above her and the quest wasn't in my quest log from nabbing it that morning. Had to do it all over again.

Since patch 3.1.2 you can fish theese in Nettlefish Schools, anywhere in Sholazar Basin. No minimum fishing skillevel either.

Just wanted to add my story. As of May 22, 2009 , I've fished skill level 50-170 thus far without catching the fish. I don't mind because I'm skilling up fishing, however it's an extremely annoying "quest".

First cast into a pool of Nettlefish with Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole caught me a Phantom Ghostfish on the first cast. I was at 47, 65. Fishing Skill: 245 (without the +20 buff from the pole). Hope that helps.

After reading what Wodarhospur wrote I tried this standing at the waterfall above the flightpath, worked perfectly! I didn't count but maybe 10-15 casts.

Definitely a help on the PvP servers! (coord approx 50,57)

First time I did this quest, I fished up the item and used my Hearthstone. Went afk for 5 minutes making a cup of tee, and when I came back to hand in the quest, there was no item.

Mine dropped at a deep spot in the river at (44.6,78.9). It looked like a safe spot for my lvl72 toon, skill 395 in fishing +100 lure and +25 pole. Ghostfish dropped after 2 minutes fishing.

Note: It's difficult to defend yourself against 3 Sapphire Hive Drones with a fishing pole in your hand.

EAT GHOSTFISH then EQUIP MELEE WEAPON.

This took me 329 catches before I gave up.. Started with 129 fishing skill and went up from there. I was not in a raid or a group at all. I relogged, tried school fishes, stayed at River's Heart and different areas.

So I believe you need a higher fishing skill.

1 - Go to Scholozar Basin
2 - Get to the specific location "River's heart"
3 - Stand in the shallow end and fish till the ghostfish comes in your bag.
4 - When it's in your bag, you have exactly a minute to find it and eat it.
5 - To eat it, right click it, it'll turn you invisbile
6- Once Eaten, quest is completed.
7- Profit!

Let me just add my experience to this:

-Level 172 fishing
- Fished in the pool (Heart of the River) for about 30 minutes. (From level 160-172)
No ghostfish

-Flew up to the stream in front of the waterfall going into the heart of the river
Ghostfish on 2nd reel.

If you are crazy like me and want to try the dailies out while you're still in the early 70s you can do it by heading to the Fizzcrank Airstrip in the Borean Tundra and then running North past the Bor'Gorok Outpost into Sholazar. Keep running on that road north till you get to the river crossing near the Nessingwary camp... Approach the river carefully. If you position yourself just right you can still fish without aggroing the crocs that are right there.

It can be caught anywhere.. One would assume a pool would be better since its' a leech fish, kind alike the pygmy suckerfish, you won't catch JUST the ghostfish, it'll leech onto something else.

FYI, For any herbers out there, if it takes awhile to catch the fish, don't sweat it, cuz Tiger Lily will pop about every 10 mins and you can make a complete circle around lake, and I usually net about 1/2 stack of TL, some deadnettle or cryst lfe at times, and usually 1 outta 3 visits to the area, I'll get a Frost Lotus also. In 1 circle, i got 2 Frost Lotus and one every visit 3 times in a row, so not complete lost.

if you're a skinner and those damn threshers keep coming up to "combat" you altho they can't attack, kill em, SKin em! usually gives borean tundra but also chill meat to help with cooking daily if you do that as well.

Miners can also find saronite and rich adamantite in there as well,

so all in all, a resource rich area, no matter what gathering skill you have.

I'm fairly certain that if your fishing level is low, as mine is, you have to fish in a pool to catch the ghostfish. With a fishing skill between 50 and 100 I casted over 30 times and caught only junk then moved to a nettle fish pool and caught a ghostfish within a few casts. I did this two days in a row with the same results, of course, my fishing skill was somewhat higher the second day.

Confirmed...You don't have to fish in any pools..simply cast in open water and you will catch one...Caught one in no more than 10 casts.

This confused me. Not to be nitpicky but the sentence should have been:

"Phantom Ghostfish must be used within 1 min or it dissapears from your bag or you'll have to fish again for it."

The original sentence told me the that I must eat the fish AND THEN fish for it again so I have something to bring back.

this took me a long time to fish up in Rivers Heart. nearly 40 suckerfish and 56 nettlefish, a few barrelhead goby and some trash...*then* I got the ghostfish. I fished in and out of pools, I don't know if it makes a difference.
The icon does look like the normal suckerfish, but it's a slightly different color, so look out for that if you're afraid you'll miss it. happy fishing!

I got mine on the 7th cast at 49,55, just a little north of River's Heart. It is clocking when you loot it so eat it fast. That completes the quest, all that's left is to turn in. This quest starts and ends at Marcia Chase (53,65), by the fountain in Dalaran.

River's Hearth is at the very center of Sholazar Basin.

Be wary, this Phantom fish icon looks exactly like the Pygmy Suckerfish and you might get deceived. You need to eat it before 60 secs or it will fade from your inventory.

i normally do this quest during the day and have so far always gotten the ghostfish within my first few casts with max fishing, however today i didn't get around to doing the quest before midnight and have so far done about 100 casts with no luck, my thoery is that its a way lower chance to catch it during the late hours.

I am low level fishing. i started this quest at 125 with no additions to boost my fishing skill. I got grey items almost exclusively. I got my first Pygmy Suckerfish at level 152. I got my Ghostfish the next cast and then got a Nettlefish the cast after that. I ate the fish and decided to do a bit more fishing just to get the level up a bit more. At level 161 I got my second Ghostfish.

106 casts for 2 Ghostfish.

Don't get frustrated. You have to level fishing anyway, right?

I decided to get to 165 before stopping. Thats when I got my third Ghostfish.

Any Northrend angler worth <his/her> salt knows about the pygmy suckerfish. It's not edible, but sometimes useful to alchemists.

There is, however, a stealthy fish that hides among the suckerfish in the River's Heart of Sholazar Basin. The phantom ghostfish. When out of water, they become increasingly translucent until they fade away completely. Some hypothesize they return to Sholazar, and others are more... superstitious.

I want you to catch this fish and discover its secret by any means!
