Alliance Death Knights receive this quest after completing The Battle For The Ebon Hold. The Horde equivalent is Warchief's Blessing.

When you are on the way to the King, you will be unfriendly to all the NPCs in Stormwind. They will say things when you pass such as "Monster!" and "I lost my family to to Scourge!" They will also throw rotten food and spit at you. You gain 6000 Stormwind reputation when you talk to the King.

Overall a very interesting quest.

Err..when we have the reputation with Stormwind, do we start with all the known Flightpaths, or must we start from zero?

For the rest, I've followed the entire quest chain now via wowhead, and... I'm really planning to make a DK afterall. First, i was hesistant, cause of the fighting mechanics, but the quests alone are more than worth it :D

For the curious: If you take the tram to Ironforge, Yes, ironforge is friendly to you.
You actually start out friendly with all alliance factions, despite the way SW treats you.

I did not try to go down to Westfall to see if it's all SW-aligned NPCs that are like this.

Quest solved , in the end u reach honored , the "unfriendly" is only a part of storyline , the 6000 honor let you reach honored as you started a normal char that start friendly

If you need to do this then hope that the horde haven't decided (and succeeded) to kill him. Otherwise it's gonna be a wait. If anyone knows his respawn timer that would be great, but I waited at least 20 or 30 minutes and nothing (he was dead and all were gone before I even got there, so who knows how long it had been prior to it).

Well... King is in the Keep, but as a corpse only (killed by the horde, apparently).
He respawned about an hour (!) later, but then a horde reappeared and killed him again. :(

BTW: QuestHelper sometimes suggests ending point for this quest in King's alternative location in Tirisfal Glades. I've checked, it's an error - there is no sign of the King.

Currently, in 3.0.3, there's a bug where if you enter a barber's shop and get a haircut (or at least enter the hair-changing menu) all the npc's will return to friendly, you can mount again and you won't get egged even if you haven't talked to Varian yet.

I for one is a little bit %^&*ed. I meen before I completed this quest, I wasnt allowed to mount up on my Deathcharger in Stormwind, but a couple of days ago, I saw a Death Knight comming straight from the Scarlet Enclave, and the NPCs were making nasty remarks to him, and throwing food, but he was allowed to mount up!

Something 2 note the reason why npcs outside of elwynn r friendly is because of flight paths but it seems like a flight from lakeshire 2 IF is 23 silver must be because the FP cost calc in game thinks that the flight is from ebon hold

Can anybody confirm that the portal to sw only stays on for the quest? After that when you use death gate to Ebon Hold, you do not have a portal to SW.

If Varian or Thrall are dead, go do some other quests and come back in a few hours. NPCs in other cities of your faction (other than Stormwind/Orgrimmar) will still be friendly to you. Theoretically you can even turn in this quest at level 80. The only major disadvantage is that you cannot reset your talents until this quest is done.

So if your faction leader is dead, don't fret and don't just stand stand around waiting impatiently. Just go level in Outland for a few hours until he respawns.

to kill time you should go to these portals they will send you straight to the dark portal
Horde: Orgrimmar (Valley Of Spirts) look for a hut that`s double storied and then go to
the top and you should find a portal

Alliance: Stormwind (The Mage Quarter) Look for a tower then follow it when you reach the top you should see
a portal to the dark portal

Before this quest is completed.
Stormwind city is the only faction you are unfriendly with.
If you are a human this may be a bad thing, but with my Draenei. I still have my mounts and auction houses.

NPC's within Stormwind that are not of the Stormwind faction like in Dwarven District while still pelting you still fully work. Including repairs and vendors.

For anyone that really REALLY wants the original classic feel to this quest... Varian is dead thanks to zombie infection... good luck turning in the quest! (Trust me... 50+ of us still waiting for respawn lol)

For those now trying to get the Frostbrood proto-worm mount, a few pieces of information hopefully you will find helpful:

1) If you create your new DK on the classic WOTLK it will start it at lvl 55 in the starter area.
2) You get 1 freebie roll of the above mentioned. If you try to roll another DK, or even on another classic WOTLK server it will give you an error message "You must have an existing character of at least lvl 55 on any realm to create a DK" It is because you have used your freebie already. If you want to delete your first freebie and have it on another realm you can do that. e.g. I created mine, my husband wanted to do the intro with me on his DK and we were both rolled on diff. servers. I deleted my new DK and was able to re-roll my freebie on his realm. I had not started any quests, only picked up the very first starter quest and then backed out after realizing we were on diff. realms.
3) Total quest line took us just shy of 2 hours. We just sped through it. Those looking to enjoy the quest-line and take their time I would say probably closer to 3 hours time.
4) Once you complete the final quest you can simply log back into your toon on Retail and in your mount menu it should be there in a pretty little box with a bow.

After finishing this quest, and becoming all friendly with SW, I discovered that I had not received a hearthstone. After retracing my steps and searching Wowhead for a couple of hours (I apparently never ask the internet the right questions), I finally resorted to asking Trade chat. Was inundated with answers from many others who apparently had had the same problem.
Answer: Go ahead and make the local inn your hearth, EVEN THOUGH you don't HAVE a hearthstone yet, THEN she'll pop one into your bag.
So NOT intuitive!

On the platform, southeast of me, is a portal to Stormwind City. Take this letter, given to me on your behalf by Lord Fordring, and deliver it to King Varian Wrynn. Use the portal.
