You have to stand ON the dispenser to get the bomb on you, if it doesnt work.

If you're on the quest you don't need to be the one to blow up the mammoths. Once a mammoth is blown up the meat is free for all loot.

Also one mammoth will give you enough meat to complete the quest, just make sure to grab the big slab of meat first.

you can find the mammoths themselves at about 37,83 or further west.. and like they said, you can get all 8 in one mammoth since they literally explode chunks everywhere... just be on top of the mammoth when it blows and click on the big carcass.

worth noting that I stood &*!@ing distance from the mammoth and took no damage when I strapped the bomb to it.

Ones you use the dispenser, you get an item in your bag, Use that to kill the mammoth.

I tried to stand under it while it was alive.
I killed it, stood 'on' it
I tried being under it while attacking it.

I too am completely unable to aquire a bomb from the despenser. I had to complete the quest with a friend that could loot a bomb.

Its Not inside the cave like the quest would intend you to think its outside to the right.

Mammoths are in some what of a herd around 37, 83. Go to the mammoth area First and check that they are spawned, before you get the UDED. (its a timed bomb and if the mammoths arent there, you get boom)

If you are unable to locate a mammoth before your timer is up, just destroy the item and go get another out of the stubborn bomb dispenser. You can also fly with the bomb, it's not that unstable. =p

At first i tot i need to kill 8 of them ...
actually not, u just need to kill 1 or 2 i think ...
but that a very simple way to do it for a hunter.

make your pet to attack ....
then let him follow u back to where the boom is ..
make sure your pet is on passive mode.
get the boom ~~ and Walaa~~~~
lots of meat on floor :P

i pull 5 mob at my first try ...

Get a bomb, step on ur fastest mount, go find a mommoth (also around 44, 78 to the east), step off ur mount and throw the bomb. One mammoth is enough for 8 pieces of meat. Good luck!

Mage can take this bomb without getting blown up, by using Ice Block when it has like 0-6 secound left before blow... Then you wont blow up =)

Ok because this quest was very confusing to me even after reading everyones notes I decided to write down what you need to do to complete this quest.

First accept the quest from Ricket the goblin standing by the teleporter in K3, she is located @40,85.
Then if your able Look for the group of mammoths that run in a pact from 38,79 to 44,78.
After locating the mammoths you need head to 41,61 you will see a small black dispenser on the ground, right click this and choose to pick up a bomb.
Now fly back to a mammoth, simply target and click the bomb in your bag. 6-9 meat will drop on the ground much like the quest in dragonblight where you blow up the worm, loot these and if needed head back to 41,61 and get another bomb to finish the job.

Hope this helps, I wish I knew before flying around 5 mins and trying to figure it out.

You can blow up the mammoths at all %'s of HP so don't bother fighting them.

I have a problem with this quest that no one else has addressed.

I can pick the bomb up fine, I can carry it fine, I can throw it fine, the mammoth blows up fine. But I can't for the life of me loot the meat chunks.

I've massacred about 10 mammoths now. I've tried disabling all my addons, abandoned the quest and picked it up again.

Nothing.

Hm... seems Ample Inspiration+A Delicate Touch are pre-quests to Opening the Backdoor.

People pointing that A Delicate Touch is a pre-quest, but I was unable to get Opening the Backdoor untill I turned-in Ample Inspiration.

Edit:Checked on other char: Ample Inspiration+A Delicate Touch handed. Bitter Departure - not. Opening the Backdoor - can't get.

In the conclusion: Ample Inspiration+A Delicate Touch+Bitter Departure are pre-quests for Opening the Backdoor.

If anyone is wondering why the fuss over this quest.

When the mammoth explodes, it turns into pieces of meat which fly around. Looked extremely brutal when I saw it for the first time. One of the closest things to gore in WoW.

When you throw the bomb at the mammoth make sure you pick up the big piece of meat in the middle, it gave me 4 hearty mammoth meat. So saves time if you pick up that one instead of looting 4 different.

Awesome quest!
If you don't throw the bomb at a mammoth in about 50 seconds, it will explode and deal around 3k damage to you.

And if you don't have epic flying mount (I'm one of these not having epic), mount up your epic ground mount and follow the road until you see a mammoth!

There are few things in this world more entertaining than watching mammoth chunks fly.

Thankfully, DEHTA is on the other side of Northrend. Chances are, if you brought them to K3, goblin blood would be shed. There should be a debuff, like in Borean...

Massive Mammoth Chunks - You reek of gunpowder and mammoth livers. Stay away from the druids for about a week.

Quick facts:

You have to get a bomb from the machine at 41.6 / 80.1 (Besides the goblin girl a little north of K2)
After you get the bomb, you'll have 50 seconds to run east and throw it to a mammoth (you can carry the bomb mounted but not throw it)
This quest is very violent! The mammoth will explode into many pieces.
For those of you who can't wait for Resident Evil 6 to come out, you can keep blowing up mammoths even after you looted all your stuff.

As a hunter I completed the quest by kiting the mammoth to the bomb dispenser. I let the pet hold aggro while I grabbed the bomb. Then I threw it at the mammoth and grabbed all the pieces.

this quest stinks, there are never any mammoths near the area of where you pick up the bombs and you can't get to the mammoth quickly enough. The should fix the timing on this.

Probably NOT a reference, but both are so... Unexpected coincidences that I thought worth mentioning...:

In the original "Tintin in the congo", from Hergé, there is a scene in which Tintin dug a hole into the dorse of a rhino and inserted a stick of dynamite to blow it away. This page was later removed due to excess of cruelty to animals, but you don't really need to go that far into google to find it =P.

The Booms are just to the North where the cave is.. She is outside the cave just to the right of it.
Get one boom and it counts down. You have about 40 seconds to find and throw it.

You get the bombs from the chest that is bouncing around, next to the NPC named Tore Rumblewrench (41.67,80.02). It's not a 'black box' or out in the middle of no where. It's against the side of the mountain, just north of K3. She also has a couple more quests for you.

Run over to the device, loot a bomb, mount up, run to a mammoth, right click the bomb in your bags, and throw at mammoth. I got all 8 pcs and then some from one mammoth. You get like 40 secs befor bomb dissapears but thats plenty. Maybe took 60 seconds to do

don't bother.... but if you must.

the dispenser is at 41,80
stand physically on top of the dispenser.
however there are no mammoths anywhere near the dispenser and by the time you find one you have blown yourself up with it...
or you will find the herd dead because some other player beat you to it.

you have to be REALLY lucky and time getting your U.D.E.D when a herd is near the dispenser ( fat chance )
if you are leveling up your characters you can find something that will give you much better XP/hour than this worthless quest.

Step 1: Go to (41, 80) and get a U.D.E.D. bomb.

Step 2: Find a mamoth and blow it up using the bomb.

Step 3: Loot up your Mamoth meats

You have to find a mamoth quick because you will have less then a minute before the bomb becomes unstable and blows up.

There are a few mamoths to the west (Hopefully no one has killed them recently).

I took the dispenser and ran west on my epic mount. You only need to blow one mammoth. It blows up in 7 small peaces and one big in the middle. I looted 3 Meats from the big one in the middle. It took me about a half minute and it was done. I've used more time writing this message than doing the quest :P

Wow! That stuff is nasty. Not to account for gnoll taste or anything, but I figured whatever they had would at least be... edible?

Let's get more creative.

Tore's got an explosive dispenser north of town... not far from the big cavern entrance, can't miss it. I'm sure she intends them for mining purposes of some sort, but I've got a better idea.

Grab one of those things and rush it to one of the nearby mammoths... most of them are to the west. Collect the meat, bring it back.
