This quest is hillarious and here's some stuff that was said when I missed.

Lucky Wilhelm says: Ouch! That's it, I quit the target business!
Drostan says: Bah, it's an improvement.

With my mage it says must have a wand equipped
so not able to shot the dude. another mage had this issue?

1) stand near the gun in nesingwary base.
2) type /target lucky wilhelm
3) either open your character info and press on the relic/wand/whatever depend on your class, or open spellbook and get "shoot" as you're using a wand.

Keep shooting until you get it complete. as simple as this

Just a side note, you cannot be using https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=37460. I was foolish enough to be standing around for 10 minutes with that on my pet penguin wondering why I could not use the gun.

i think the best way to complete this quest is simply to open your bags and drag the icon of the gun into your actionbar then you kan simple leftclick and shoot

Is there any way for a Paladin, or classes not able to use ranged weapons to do this quest?

I believe you can keep this rifle if you wanted something for an RP set and your class couldn't equip normal guns. Although, you wouldn't be able to do the follow-up and abandoning the quest will drop the gun.

Do this quest BEFORE you complete the "hunting"/slain quests in Nesingwary Base Camp.

And that's because the follow-up quest (The Great Hunter's Challenge) asks you to kill "60 Game Animals" i.e. the animals you are asked to slain in the "hunting" quests of Nesingwary Base Camp.

I dont know if this will help any hunters, the gun icon will replace your bow, however, when I clicked on the target and went to activate my bow now a gun' icon on my panel, it wouldnt light up and kept saying, not cannot be attacked. I was just about to give up and deem myself a we-tard when I had clicked on my paper doll (bow/gun) to remove it and it shot the apple. Go figure eh? Well I hope that helps! Sorry for the terminology, still learning the lingo.

This is the best quest ever! You keep shooting the poor guy and seeing a little spurt of blood come out. I couldn't help but laugh every time I clicked the RJR Rifle icon. XD

Tips to follow
1 - Remember you have the gun equipped.
2 - Remember you have Wilhelm targeted, other way u wont be able to shot.
3 - Move your cam pressing right click (so you will aswell face where u are moving your cam), and move it until u see the apple on YOUR head, then shot. It took me 1 shot only. Did the quest with 2 players, and I ned only 1 shot each, but who knows maybe i was just lucky :)
4 - Re-equip your relic, bow, gun...whatever :D

Quick Question: Can you press Z to draw this weapon if you are a Paladin/Druid/Mage/Priest/Warlock/Deathknight? ~ You can't on Egan's Blaster, unfortunately.

Two more funny things:
1. If you select anyone else and use the rifle you get a message: "What are you doing? Only aim that thing at Wilhelm!", instead of the old "Invalid target"
2. RJR rifle? Any ideas?

I've done this with all my characters, druid, shaman, paladin, death knight and mage, all of them it seemed to take several shots (my paladin took no less then 12 to get it), and yet when I did this with my hunter today, I got it first try.
Maybe its designed for hunters like that, or maybe it was just a lucky shot.

I found it funny how when you miss and shoot one of the tickbirds behind him, Crunchy, someone's alligator, rushes up and eats the dead bird. :P

I'm still surprised I see no gnome-hate! Like, "I wish I could've shot the gnome and not the apple" or something similar.
Are people starting to appreciate gnomes? Yay!

I couldn't help but laugh while doing this quest. The poor gnome took quite a few shots before I actually hit the apple. 7 Tickbirds were harmed in the completion of this quest.

I could never hit willhelm until I tried something different. Check this out this really works! In front of Drostan theres another gun hitched onto on a tripod. The gun on the tripod has a scope. Position yourself in front of the gun, kneel down if you have to, and position your camera so that Lucky Willhelm is in the middle of the scope's sight. Then fire and you will hit him no matter what.

Does anybody know if your distance from the target helps at all? I was back by the quest giver shooting at the apple, and I hit everything BUT it. I moved forward until I was about 2 yards away, shot and hit it on the first try. Dumb luck, or easier to hit?

Sadly for my orc who enjoys shooting gnomes i got the shot first try.I then spent the next 15 minutes shooting the gnome for the hell of it. It was almost as good as punting a gnome.

This seems to depend on your wepon skill. I'm a hunter with a high gun skill and did it on 1 shot. Other people I know took as many as 20 shots to get it. Also, make sure you drag the gun on to an action bar so you can shoot. At first I just equipped it like a normal ranged weapon and couldn't do anything.

Actually you can use the gun also in the wand slot. Just did it as a mage. Remember to drag it on the action bar to use it.

If you dont have the skill you cant do the quest but dont worry, there are quests that all classes and professions will not be able to do. Thats just the way it is.

My gun skill is 380/380 - and it took me 7 shots. When I didn't get it after 3 attempts, I came here to see what others had to say about this quest. I thought maybe there was a "trick" to it that I wasn't seeing (like the trampoline bird's nest quest in Nagrand).

< grinning wildly > Really? For 73 levels ( and one year) I have been exploring and learning. I Use only what I make or find. We are skilled in leather, cloth, enchanting, blacksmithing, jewel-craft and potions ( in that order). Much of what I fight is green or yellow, I'm a solo hunter mostly; single targets. I explore a LOT and stop to fish , ooh yea, and cook, and make bandages... Advancing my leather skills, I have been hunting in Sholazar Basin since LEVEL 73, taking down Girraffs and tigers and cobras and crocs .... Hoping to run into that Amazing white cat (with the swirls?) ... So, I was delighted that I could actually hunt these orange and sometime red beasties and survive. I'm 3 1/2 bubs into LEVEL 74 when I finally get around to stopping at Nesingways to get any hunting quest, after all that is what I have been doing here for HALF a level ! And to my surprise, Nothing, No quests. REALLY ? Not finding any, I come here to take a look at what might be available. AND REALLY ? LEVEL SEVENTY SIX ? REALLY ? <shrugs> Oh well, I guess I'll come back to hunt greens.

I did this as a shaman (no ranged weapon skills at all) - the gun used the slot for my relic, then I had to right click it using the character screen: makes me think that anyone can do the quest, regardless of weapon skill - just equip the gun with right click from inventory and let it go where it will :P

You have to be at max range for this to give you credit for quest completion.

Well, let's give it a try. Here, we'll start you out with something nice and gentle. Don't worry, it's got no kick to it at all. Remember, don't point that gun at anything you don't intend to fire at.

Now, when you're ready, just take aim at that apple on top o' old Lucky Wilhelm's head and let 'er fly!
