Nice and completely nonsensical grammatical error right there, a quite ignorant debasement of language. ;-) If he "COULD care LESS what is written on it" then that means he actually DOES CARE what is written on it, because in order to care LESS you have to already CARE for something.

The original expression, of course, is "I couldn't care less", meaning "it is impossible for me to have less interest or concern in this matter, since I am already utterly indifferent". It is originally British. The inverted form "I could care less" was coined in the US and is found only there.

Attempts to be logical about "I could care less" also fail. Taken literally, if one could care less, then one must care at least a little, which is obviously the opposite of what is meant. It is so clearly logical nonsense that to condemn it for being so just makes you look stupid. *cough*

I also believe they meant "sheet of parchment" not "sheaf". But I could care less! ;-)

While I agree with you on the point of "couldn't care less," because it is true, you're incorrect that they meant "sheat," instead of "sheaf." Sheat isn't a word. You're looking for sheet. And sheaf is, in fact, correct for the term. A sheaf is a bundle of something, or something bound together, so in this case, he was waving about pieces of parchment that have been bound together.

Thought I'd offer my two cents.

CARE is already a transitive verb (correct me if it should be INtransitive), meaning it needs a holding hand, an object:

" ... to care FOR what is written on (the paper)"

Hence, the grammatical error persists, irony or not.

But then again, who cares for what is on this comment thread ?

So this is the impression I make when I get started on one of my socalled pet-subjects! :-D

Well, it's not so bad to be critisized for being a wordsplitter and for going into (too) tiny details with the way people use the language; especially not because most people "don't care!", meaning they don't care enough about how they speak, only enough to be serious about how trendy they are capable of keeping themselves.

Since they "could care less" and yet "couldn't care (much) less", what Yewbacca does - and wha what I tend to do from time to time as well - can't be too hurtful or bad.

On the other hand this only makes it more imperative that the few of us who DO care, also care to express it.

Yes, I guess it can be annoying when someone points out that you're turning your reality into nonsense by the way you (don't) use the language (more and more).

To me this isn't just annoying wordsplitting. But that's because I can see what it does to our everyday world of consensus.

Still, let me say this: US english has a LOT of changes of this kind. And basically to them there's no lack of sense because of it.
It's like when we say "$%^& you!".
Nobody would think that we actually mean what we say!
... But we DO mean what we say, if we keep within the set of consensus that rules in the situation, time and location.

So .... guys, ... WARBOSZ, when Yewbacca critisizes the lack of meaning in the way you chose to communicate, I think you misunderstand his intention. If it was me, I wouldn't be tearing down sentences in order to infuriate their authors. I would really be discussing the english language and take the standpoint of the original british version.

I like Yewbacca's sarcasm and believe you shouldn't take offence, even though it was you who left the text he's analysing. Because the real "person" spoken to here is the mindset of a period in our culture. And that is especially the case, because we think so little about why or what we do, think and ... Say (or Write).

I could also say instead of the above, that we should all be very offended! ... At least all those of us who have desided to represent the degradation of the language by actively taking part in a way of communicating which is basically destructive (unless one finds the decline of culture positive).

But before I turn this into a lengthy pep-talk, I better just leave it at this:

Critisizm is basically what can lead to changes for the better.
So let's chose to read Yewbacca's ability to critisize constructively and be funny too, and then, perhaps... put a bit of thought into what he means too!
