Make sure that you heal up before attempting this quest. Thane will sometimes attack you, aswell as use a Volley (which you can move out of) and will damage you. If you die you will not be able to retrieve your corpse.

One word of warning; if you dismount/get kicked off while mounted on Flamebringer, the parachute wont work :p

Just remember when you get to this quest that you need to fly right up on him. At first I made the mistake of staying back. Start hitting him with 3. Then hit 2 to stun him. Press 1 and repeat. Make sure you keep him stunned or else you will die. Make sure you are at full health before attempting as well.

The wing buffet skill was working intermittently for me. Mostly it wasn't working, but occasionally it was. I am yet to finish this quest due to the bug. I turned off all my mods to see what the issue was and I was still having the problem with the base Blizz UI. It seemed to work once after each relog but no more.

EDIT:

I was able to finish this despite the bug. It took three of us to take turns killing him while the other two dps him down. It is doable with the bug but you will need to bring a few friends that have this quest and do it together.

This quest was VERY buggy for me.

First it's worth noting, you get on the dragon by talking to him, while that seems very simplistic, if its bugging and isnt letting you talk to him, you can't be sure if theres something else you need to do.

A note to any shadow priests, I wasn't able to do this while in shadow form. First it bugged and wouldnt let me talk to him, then when I did finally get on his back he was disappearing, reappearing, and going in and out of shadowform causing him to freeze up alot. Tried logging, etc etc. Worked with me out of shadowform :)

Finding the right spot to talk to the dragon took me a while, even though he has a huge targeting circle, the spot where you can actually talk to him is quite small.

Once mounted, fly over to the tower and fight him up close and personal, make sure that if the dragon dies. you fall to the platform rather than to the ground. That way, you can carrry on fighting even if the dragon is killed. I had him on about 20% health when my dragon died. i finished him off with about 20% of my own health (l76 demo spec lock). Be warned though that if this happens to you, , there is no way down! You will either have to suicide jump, or hearth/portal unless you have levitate/slowfall. Nogginfogger elixir may be handy!

Just did it, and as stated above, fighting him ON the tower is probably a good idea, my dragon died when he had ~1500hp left. But i can tell you there is a way down without porting, behind the tower in the river, just jump into the middle of it, and you'll take no damage, that's how i got down ;)

My dragon had 5k when Thane died. Very easy quest try to land on the platform, click 3 then 2 then you spam 1 till the CD on 2 and 3 is up. rinse and repeat !

did this quest 6 times.. BE SURE to stun him every time it pop's.. or you will die..
If you have no more quest. you can then Fly allmost all the way to town and hand in the quest.. saves you some running

One thing no one mentioned is that u need to talk to a red dragon (Flamebringer) to start the quest and fly on his back to kill Thane Torvald Eriksson (27, 72) on the buildings top.

Funny thing, u can do this quest in ghost wolf form :P

Great advice to get in his face and keep the wing buffet (stun) active. While spamming #1.

BTW, this changes your normal action bar vs. creating a 'special' bar for the dragon (as with many of the other 'jump in and control' quests in NR).

He went down easy for me, with almost no loss in health. I'd say less than 15 min from quest pick-up to turn in. This includes running through the village with the large humanoids u had to kill for the prereq quest. Fortunately their aggro radius seems to be relatively small.
To find the dragon, run all the way through the village (following the central path) and go down a hill and to the left. You'll see the dragon off to the left by the woods. I'm curious - you may be able to come through the woods and bypass the whole village.
Anyway, once on the dragon, your target is in the top floor of the tallest building in the camp (follow the path back up the hill and the building is at the top of the hill on the left, you should see your target on the balcony facing the central pathway). Open with wing buffet (it has a cast time of a few seconds so be patient) then #3, then spam #1 and watch for the cooldown on wing buffet. Hope this helps.

Just for fun, I tried flying back to the outpost and by the time I got kicked out,parachuted right to the entrance. schweet!

I followed the advice from the other posts and had Thane mostly dead. Then, the Firebringer dragon died and I ended up on the top of the platform. I finished him off w/warlock pet. There is no way off the platform w/o jumping/hearthstone. I jumped from the NE corner of the platform from a plank. I landed in the water and lived w/no damage.

Much easier the 2nd time I did it. As people said, land and alternate between the wing buffet and molten fury to keep him knocked out while spamming 1 in between. Dead in 10seconds and had 60% health. First time I tried to stay ranged and spam the fire and it took me aboue 4 times to figure out that was a bad plan.

The dragon was so bugged that he wouldnt even use any of his abilities so i said screw it and mounted up, flew up there and killed him the old fashioned way.

I am a level 78 hunter, 51/15/3 and my pet is a regular old cat.

I died while mounted on Flamebringer and my corpse was left floating high above Thorvald's platform, so I couldn't resurrect. Had to take the spirit healer.

I found that if you're a warlock all you need to do is makes sure you have your pet summoned before you mount the flamebringer then fly as close as you can to Thane while shooting him with fire when he knocks you off the flamebringer you'll land on the porch with him let you pet fight and run to the back side of the building he wont attack your pet or you if you're on the back side and your pet will kill him and you'll get credit.

I could not complete this quest. I am not sure if the spells were not working or what. I don't know how some of you guys finished this, but I fond it hard to believe that anyone did this quickly and killed the guy. I died five times, from multiple directions, locations and trajectories. Don't know what I did wrong, but I dropped the quest.

All I got out of this was a large repair bill.

As a mage when doing this be sure to be full health and put on a mana shield before mounting up. I ran in expecting an easy kill without doing so and found myself doing a few corpse runs. His volley and multi-shot hurt when you only have 8k health :)

As some others here mentioned, the key is to fly right up to Thane so Flamebringer's "Wing Buffet" (stun) is in range, then just spam Flamebringer's two Fire spells while waiting for the Wing Buffet CD. Much more difficult if you try and kill Thane from range. Added bonus; on my Horde toon I just flew Flamebringer over to Conquest Hold before he kicked me off and I parachuted right down to the Hold.

Controls are buggy. If you aren't at the right angle or distance the buttons don't always work and he'll still be hitting you, so... it may take some trial and error.

Just talk to Flamebringer to control him. Don't spend ten minutes rooting through your bags to find the flame-imbued talismans that are mentioned in the quest text.

That'll learn me for reading the quest and not just immediately spamming /general. ;)

be careful not to let your dragon die and end up having to fight this guy on the ledge, as far as i could explore there is no safe way down, i ended up hearthing back to wyrmrest and flying back to conquest hold instead of jumping and risking dying.

btw that video helped me locate the guy.

Its like everyone said u gotta get close to this guy so your wing batter works. As soon as you wing batter then hit with the fire breath 2x then wing batter keep this up til dragon dead then fight him til hes dead. Real important that you get close to him for this to work.

It is important to give the stun (the purple ability) time to set in. Don't rush it, when he still can manage to shoot once at you. If you don't allow the function to effectuate, you will reset the CD every time you "interrupt" it.

It may sound strange, but I had this happen over and over, because I kept loosing the fight to start with and began to hurry more and more, thinking I wasn't fast enough. But in fact the problem can easily be the opposite.

The advice people write above works (perhaps except the advice to stay and fight on when he has killed the drake. I didn't feel that would be the smart thing to do myself, so I fled every time the drake died and started over, rather than risk dying). - Just thought I would mention the thing about giving the spells time to work, because it had me lose three times more AFTER I read the advice and basically did things right ... except for being too hasty.

I died 3 times so i just jumped off dragon onto the back of his fort. Then i summoned treants on him and kept LoSing around corner everytime he volley'd or i was low on health, then heal and repeat. I killed him completely like this as a lv 73 balance druid.

Easiest way to do this quest is to fly the drake up on the ledge of the tower where Torvald is and make sure you're hovering above the ledge the tower has. When your drake is about to die, jump off it on to the ledge of the tower and finish the job yourself - Torvald will have ~10k HP left by that point so you should have no trouble killing him.

this quest was really easy once i figured out how to get off the dragon and land on the platform still. i couldnt kill on the dragon so i got onto the platform and solod it with my 73 paladin. after that to get off i mounted up and jumped off the back into the water so i wouldnt have to do a suicide jump.

This is insanely simple as a class that can do burst damage or DoT and then LoS quickly. He does not seem to evade when you run behind the tower when trying to kill him by yourself (without the dragon). I just did this on my 74 Shadow Priest and you can choose whether to LoS or not because he does not chase after you if you LoS, he just stands there, damage ticking and all. His arrows only hit for 1k, and Volley is avoidable, so you probably wouldn't even have to LoS - his HP is easy to bring down without it.

this is very easy to do with out using the dragon if your within melee range, my 73 ret pally buffed with BoM, SoL, and using JoL, never had to heal myself and if you stay close to him he doesn't use his arrows which is what kills you the fastest.

either use your flying mount (if you bought cold weather flying for your alt) or fly around the back of the tower and dismount from the dragon, died two times while using the dragon, didn't even come close to dying while doing it without the dragon.

hope this helps you melee classes out there.

Yepp - 73 Orc DK on frost. Dismounted on balcony. normal melee. Never saw his AoE that he used on my 80 Hunter in the past. Then jump into river for 0 damage. One thing I keep finding useful - dual wield (146 level swords) with fallen crusader runeforging, I self heal a hell of a lot on frost in long melees.

Just a tip for people who die doing this quest, Do Not Use The Spirit Healer Just stand directly infront of the door and if your corpse hasn't fallen down the jump in ghost form and the message will appear to come back to life.

Just wanted to mention that NOT doing this quest apparently eliminates an entire quest line at Conquest Hold. I ignored it for a while, then found that I had to do it in order to have access to My Enemy's Friend. , which would miss out on lots of easy XP in the subsequent quests, including those that begin with Eyes Above.

Two things to keep in mind about this (rather broken) quest.

1. Flamebringer does not have his own health bar, contrary to what many comments here are saying. If the Thane kills him, he's killed you.

2. This appears to be a new issue: the #1 ability doesn't appear to be effective any more. If you fire it off, you'll notice that your targeting mark jumps about 10 feet upward and the Thane doesn't take any damage. And the stun and DoT aren't enough to finish him off.

So pretty much, the quest cannot be done as intended ATM. You'll just have to fly up there and fight him man-to-man. Fortunately, the guy is an absolute creampuff for a 74 elite - I killed him with absolutely no trouble with my average-geared 74 demo lock and felguard.

Solo'd on a level 76 avg geared disc priest. I died three times trying to do the dragon thing, said screw it and took him on face to face. He broke my bubble a few times -- important to bubble whenever weakened soul isn't up -- had to run LOS once or twice to heal, came back, renewed my DOTs and penanced/smited/holy fired to oblivion. He didn't even get off a Volley.

Soloed as a level 76 Frost Mage, Flame Breath (ability 1) seemed to be bugged for me so I stopped using it ( it never did any damage) I just buffed up (Mana Shield + Ice Barrier) and Food +30 stam. I moved out of volleys and spammed ability 3 then 2 and managed to kill him with my dragon being dead at the last second (the dot killed him).

the video that is on jyren is very helpful to do the quest for the thane of voldrune. i keeped dieing before i read the comments. after i saw the video, i was able to kill it the first time around.

On 5/19/2010 he went down like a stone using the dragon in his face on the platform with him. 2,3,1,1,1 etc. keeping stun up and using 3 whenever it was up. Had 10K left on the drag. I was also able to ride the drag back to Conquest before he split.

The dragon seems to be bugged to me also, couldn't kill him with dragon and jumped to the left side of the platform Thane standing; and I realised that Thane can't atack me from there and still he didn't evade my atacks, played with him hide and seek. Soloed him easly with 75 ele shaman.

I went in close the first time and got totally owned. The dragon died quickly, I landed on the platform and was dead within seconds. Second time I stayed just a little bit away and was able to take him down without too much problems. So, I don't know if they nerfed his arrow attacks or buffed up his sword attacks, but that's how it worked for me. On a side note, don't fly out of Voldrune, the mount will disappear and you will fall...possibly to your death...like me....:)

Ok so i read your guys comments and well everything u guys talk about is completely useless to a person who doesnt understand this quest. It took me a few tries but i eventually figured out how to defeat him.

Once you board the dragon which is easy to find go to the enemy. You are given three different skills to use on your action bar. U need to use all three of them in order to defeat him. When you aproach him note that u can switch the angle at which the dragon attacks. Also your Flame Breath attack on the action bar has a 40 yrd range which means you have to stay close to him. The trick is to find out your range and attack angle in which to use Flame Breath so u hit him with it. You will notice that the first few times u use Flame Breath u probly wont do any damage. That simply means ur not hitting him and need to change ur angle, range, or both. A second thing to note is that this is a threat based battle which means if ur not doing enough damage to him he will switch and attack your character instead of the dragon which isnt so bad cuz it keeps him busy longer and gives u more time to kill him. Use your wing buffet to stun him and then spam the other two attacks until he dies. It will probly take you a few tries but its relatively easy. Also dont worry if he kills the dragon u will parachute to the ground. But if he kills ur character instead of the dragon than you have to Rez ur body.

Annoying Yes! But relatively easy when you figure it out. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS!

I've tried this twice now. Both times I got killed and my body stuck in mid-air. Which means it can't be retrieved. The first time a GM helped me, second time I took the hit to res at the graveyard. I can't afford this quest, 9g repair bill for 5g and a helm. Just not cost effective.

If you're a druid you can have a bit of fun with this quest... you can mount Flamebringer while shapeshifted. Rather amusing.

You have to get as close as possible to the guy and spam the three spells you have every time they are off CD. Stun, Molten, fireball, fireball, molten, stun etc. I tried close and mid and sitting right on him was the only way to kill him.

Up close and personal is the way to go. Be on the ledge next to him in case Flamebringer bites it so you at least get a chance to finish him off. Make sure you stun him every chance to minimize damage to yourself.

I went in close and he used his sword. Got his health down to about 1/4th and the dragon died. I ended up on the platform and luckily my felguard and I finished him off. Seeing no way off the platform, you can run and jump in the water to the west of the platform.

The trick is to get close to Thane. His arrows will kill you quickly but his sword attack is weaker.

Sometimes he casts "Volley", which (I think) reflects the damage back to you, killing you instanly. When he casts Volley, just don't attack and wait until it's gone, and you'll live. You can see the spell coming by pressing 'V', and while he's casting, blue arrows drop down on him.

I just did this quest. Let me tell you exactly what you need to do. Get on the dragon. Fly up to the very fron of the house Thane is on. There is a small piece of wood that is pointed, you can't miss it, it is right in front. Position yourself right up to Thane with the dragon just to the right and above that pointed piece of wood. Hit him with the wing buffet, then fire the flame breath at him immediately, then the molten fury, then flame breath, flame breath, flame breath until the wing buffet is usable again, hit him again and then the molten fury. Do this and you will beat him easily.

went in close and got owned, so I stayed back and he tossed spears at me for MORE damage, the dragon was dead inside of 30 secs, I went very soon after...Like most of what blizzard does this is half-arsed and poorly thought out, kept getting errors you can't do that while moving from the dragon attacks, also received you are too far away messgaes while getting literally pelted by his spears...well thought out and executed Blizzard thanks again for no effort...

For those who are having issues with dying and not the drake, here is what I did to defeat Thane Torvald Eriksson.

Good luck with him. He seems harder than he did back during release, or I am just slower in my old age.

For some time now, every quest where you mount a vehicle has been bugged for me, and this one is no exception. So after opening the fight with the dragon's attacks I just dismounted on the Thane's ledge and took him down tank&spank style. Went down easily enough and I got credit for the quest.

With the flame-imbued talismans, we can finally challenge the thane.

His favorite mount is a ferocious proto-drake called Flamebringer. It is kept bound in chains in the western part of Voldrune, but with the power of the talismans, you should be able to bend it to your will and use it against the thane.

Once you have Flamebringer under your control, search the tops of the towers of Voldrune for the thane and use Flamebringer to destroy him.
