In the latest beta build this quest is bugged. The dragon does not fly up and causes a disconnect everytime you try to ride the dragon.

Make sure that you heal up before attempting this quest. Thane will sometimes attack you, aswell as use a Volley (which you can move out of) and will damage you. If you die you will not be able to retrieve your corpse.

I failed a couple times. On my third attempt I stayed very close to Thane. I managed to get him down to about 10% health and then he killed my Flamebringer but when I dismounted I was on the ledge with Thane. I dotted him up and ran around the corner but he didn't follow me and my dots killed him. He managed to get one hit on me though, and he hits very hard. Anyway, I figured I'd leave that little tip in case any of you are having problems killing him too.

The possesion bar switches to the proto-drakes abilites once you've mounted up. Use the 2nd button whenever it is off the CD (7sec) and spam the two other abilities meanwhile. This will get you the victory.

Don't worry about Wing Buffet, just spam button 1 and then 3 when it's up. Move out of the volley and you'll be fine.

When beginning the fight, be sure you are hovering somewhere above the same ledge Thane is on rather than in the open air in front of him. That way, if he kills the dragon before you kill him, you will only fall a few feet to the ledge and you'll have a chance to finish him off. If you are not above the ledge and the dragon dies, you will free-fall to the ground. I died as a result of this fall on my first attempt.

I've tried using the wing buffet, dont work, I've tried moving around, cant cast while moving, I've tried 8 different times. There are bodies littering the ground beneath him. Good luck I'd rather go grind leather for a whole lvl then try this damn quest.

This quest might be difficult, I only tried once and he had me to half way down before i hit him a second time due to lag.
IF YOU DONT WANT TO FIGHT HIM ON DRAGON:
Just blast him a few times, or none if you think you can handle him(im prot, did it without using the dragon at all)
Position your dragon so you will land on the balcony when you dismount after dragon dies, and fight him face on. Very simple.
Im sure if your 77 and can fly you dont need the dragon at all.

It seems that the best way to do this quest using the dragon is to get right up on the ledge with Thane. When I did it this way Thane never volleyed at all, so that helps a lot when it comes to not getting hit with it. As for attacking, I just spammed 1 and 3 when it was up and finished the fight pretty quickly. I attempted it twice before this without being on the ledge and the volley is incredibly hard to avoid and it seems that it is bugged so that if you go out of range Thane resets which is very obnoxious.

I had such a hard time with this quest because most of the time there is a bug and even at the right distance I fired all I could but it didn't register with wow.

I had to kind of go 1m in front of the Thane to somehow start the fight and then take so much heat so fast that I would die.

If another player did not try on my 5th time so that we took him together, I think I would have to have tried many times again.

I just did this quest. No, its not that easy.

The trick I figured out is this: I would stay in one spot and spam 1 like 4 - 5 times. Then move to my left about 20 yards. He would then cast volley and miss me. Repeat. It worked like a charm. It took me about 4 tries to figure it out.

Just did this as a feral druid. I'm sure it's a bug, but you can mount the drake while shapeshifted. I died the first time, but I soloed him as a bear... riding a drake. I'm sure it'll get nerfed, but it's fun to ride shapeshifted. : )

I noticed last night when I did this quest, that even if you don't tag the target first (i.e., there were two or three other players there attacking him at the same time I was), as long as you do damage to him, you'll get credit for the kill. So, if for some reason, you're having issues with this quest wait until someone else goes for the kill and then help them out. He goes down quick and you get credit for the quest. 8-)

A tip for those who don't want use his dragon to kill him.

If your a ranged, you can simply pillar-kite him on his own tower, because he don't seems to be willing to move away from his spot.
Simply stand at the corner of the tower, cast your spell then move behind it..
I did this as a mage without loosing a single hp.

Position yourself just above him-hit him alternately with flame breath and molten fire-ensure you hit him with wing buffet whenever it is up-you should have no problem. If you see your or the dragon's health is too low, ride away to where the dragon is chained dismount, health back up and try again. I took me two attempts-the first time I was too far away to wing buffet.

no problems on my mage.. just use flame breath and molten fire.. wing buffet when it's up.. i got dismounted when he was at 4 percent and had no problem soloing the rest. :)

I've discovered what is truly wrong with this quest. When he attacks your dragon, some of his attacks also hit you and not just the dragon pet. The real method to overcome this, however, is not to dodge in and out of the Arrow Volley, but to fight him face to face on his level in melee range. When you're close enough, he will no longer use the volley, and that is his strongest attack that also hits you by far.

Also, I have found from dozens of tries before killing him that the problem with the #2 Stun ability not going off is because of movement right when using the move. To be able to really use it correctly, once you're right in front of him, don't take any more movements. Stun him right away and use 3 whenever it's up and spamming 1 when 3 is not up. Use the stun right when it's cooldown is over and go right back to the 1 and 3 spamming. Your character should take some damage, but you should be able to take him down before you yourself dies. Ive never seen the dragon die before my character, but then again I did this quest with only just barely 10k hp and no armor, so if I can do it any class should be able to do it. And if none of that works, I guess you could try it with a second person. Good luck. I know how annoying this quest can be if you keep dying.

Agreed. - Attacking with the drake is hit or miss. I could barely get the abilities to work. After 2 tries, It was easier to land at the back of the shack, bring up my imp and set him loose. This allowed him to attack from within the building and not take any damage. Then, i would run around the right side (the left side can be treacherous due to the decking being broken) and dot him up with the insta-cast dots. Run back and repeat as necessary.

OK just did this quest as a group. It worked weirdly, my attacks showed no damage on thane and I eventually died. While at the graveyard my partner killed Thane and we both got credit. Don't know why but Ill take it!

In case you don't read your quests, like me, and got massively confused for this quest...

The Flamebringer mentioned in the quest log is a dragon you have to ride. It's located right under the O in "Voldrune" on the map. The guy you have to kill is atop one of those buildings, just down the path like 2 seconds.

Watch out for the guy's Volley, because it can (will) kill you. Just move over to the side when you notice him casting it.

Another way to kill him, especially for ranged or casters, is to dismount the dragon on the roof of the tower, jump down to the platform to side of Thane, and then literally cast and strafe LoS, then repeat. Beat him as a 73 DK Frost build and kept spamming my spells.

On my DK, I got him to about 30% HP and then jumped off the mount and did the rest myself.

The best advice I can give to you is, If he starts attacking you personally, Fly back to were you got on the dragon, dismount him, heal yourself, then talk to the dragon and remount and try again. It may take a couple times but it prevents you from dying and having a huge repair bill :P

I found this impossible to do while on the dragon, using any of the above techniques. As a frost mage, however, there is a very easy way to do this. First, dismount on the roof, then jump down to the ledge out of his view. As mentioned above, he stays in place and won't chase you. Then sic your Water Elemental on him. The Elemental will run right up next to him and blast him, and he won't be able to damage it. Took me three Elementals to finish him off, with no danger to me.

Same here. I couldn't kill him with the dragon. So got off in the back of the tower. As a hunter I just sent my pet on him and shot him from distance. He did kill my pet. But I just ran to the back out of his sight, cause he doesn't follow you, healed up rezzed my pet and finished him off. So much easier then with the dragon.

You really have to be a complete and total moron to not get this quest, and judging by the comments here WoW has started to cater to them

It is real simple. First come to Grizzly Hills at the right level, not freaking 72 or 71 like most you idiots

Then, you fly right in from of the Thane, spam wing buffet when its up, and 1 and 3 otherwise. You can even fly away and eject out in the woods for a fast trip back

Do all you first time post 60 players understand this now?

In agreement with those above, but here's a slightly different wording:

1. Fly your dragon into the same space as the thane but park directly above him.
You should still be able to target him.
2. Spam 2, 3, 1 in that order. 2 as soon as it's up, 3 as much as possible, and 1 whenever the other 2 are on CD.

I finished with 75% health on the dragon and 98% on me (I am a plate wearer, YMMV).
He never fired volley once.

edit: i found that the wing buffet would only stun Teh Thane if i approached him from the left side of the tower. i remember the first two times i did this quest the buffet would send him back a bit and he'd end-up inside the tower... i'm guessing that blizzard "fixed" that clipping a bit.

I followed the instructions to the tee....2 then spam 1 & 3. The flying dragon did die when Thane was about 6K, so I dropped in and kicked his butt. Special note though....I'm not lvl 77 yet so no flying mount...how did I get down? I mounted my horse and jumped into the river below on the back side with no damage taken.

I tried to absorb as much of this ~~lengthy Russian novel~~ strategy guide as I could, and I still had to run away twice and dismount with Thane at ~50%. On my third attempt, I saw some random DK swooping in and invited her before she tagged him. We just burned his silly ass down, no problem. We've been married for three months, she just told me she's expecting, and if all goes well, our first child will be born exactly one year after the release of WotLK! OK, I made that last part up- no doubt the DK is a fat single middle-aged guy like me irl, and we'll never meet again.

But seriously, worst-case scenario: pretend the quest reads The Thane of Voldrune {Group} and proceed accordingly.

It took me 3 attempts to kill Thane to be honest it got abit stressful after the 2nd go as i got his health down to about 10% and i had half of my health left then he hit me twice and my mount was dead. I did it in the end though i just spammed every button once it was off CD and it worked (: It seems like it's one of those quests where you have to keep trying until you succeed.

The first time I tried to do this, I failed but afterwards, I came and read here that it helps to be close to him. Being right up in his face, he didn't volley once and only attacked my drake. Be sure to be as close as possible in case your drake dies, since you can end up on the ledge and finish him off.

Rotation: Buffet as soon as it's up and, 3rd ability when it is up, and 1st ability in the meantime.

Easy steps to complete this quest:
1. Use ability 3 (Molten something, the one with the DOT) to start combat.
2. Once combat is started, get to melee range and immediately hit Wing Buffet.
3. Keep your mouse cursor on the Wing Buffet icon; each time the CD is up, hit it. Wing Buffet is the top priority over all the other abilities.
4. Any time Wing Buffet is on CD, it's your choice of either Flame Breath or the Molten ability. Personally i try to use the Molten ability as often as I can, ie. hit it when it's off CD, but it may be difficult to keep an eye on it while concentrating on Wing Buffet AND spamming Flame Breath all at once.

With the above technique, I was able to complete the quest with about 1/3 health left on Flamebringer.

Also, I found that he only did direct damage to me when I was NOT in melee range. It was either his ranged attacks or the Volley attack that did the direct damage. In melee, he only seemed to attack Flamebringer, and Volley was never used. Not sure if this was pure luck, though.

A small thing to note, even though it isn't related to killin'

Once you've killed Thane, you can ride the dragon out of Voldrune. It gives you an 8 second warning before dropping you. That is enough time to reach 4/5ths of the way to the Alliance base. Saves you some time riding and killing your way through Voldrune.

I just finished this quest. I found the flying right into his face was succesful for me. I tried a few times with the other suggested methods, and they didnt work as well. I am a 73 Combat Rogue. So I couldnt create my own tank. He never used the Volley attack as someone else mentioned, and this allowed me to complete the quest with full health, and dragon was abot 3k left.

This is soloable on foot as a 75 ele shaman in quest rewards and heirlooms.

Use your flying mount to get up the tower and approach the boss from behind, throw a DoT on him, drop your totems and summon your earth elemental. The elemental will tank him and you can spam dps, heroism and the like.

With a few self heals and maybe 1 or 2 on the elemental this is easily solo'd without using the drake.

This is another quest you shouldn't really bother with. Fly the dragon around a bit for fun if you like, but trying to kill the mob is just going to ruin your armour. Like those above, you'll probably die a few times, and like me, your corpse might end up floating mid air where you can't reach it, and have to res at the graveyard. Quest reward < repair costs.

THE TRICK TO THIS IS TO GET IN HIS FACE.

The first reaction most experience is to attack from a distance. DON'T get as close to him as you can get and use all abilities available. I started with Flame Breath, then hit him with Wing Buffet, and then Molten Fury. I continued the onslaught using Wing Buffet whenever it came off CD (cooldown) and Molten Fury as well. It took no time.

If you have a flying mount, it is possible to skip the dragon and kill him head on. As a 73 Ret Paladin, it was simple enough, a small group with a means of healing should be able to do this without the dragon as well.

Credit is awarded if you don't use the dragon.

i found that doing the rotation 2 3 1 was much more effective than spamming 1.... 3 does more dmg to thane if he is stunned thus you use 231 and only spam 1 when other two are on CD

I just solod this guy without the dragon mount the quest wants you to use as a shaman. didn't use heroism or any trinkets just a earth elemental and my regular dps rotation healing were it was needed... so easy its kinda laughable. but yeah if your class can heal and you move out of the volley when he does it you can easily do this quest without the drake.

Really this is NOT hard unless it's bugged - just make use of the abilities given properly and he'll die with around 10k left on your drake. Almost all non-bugged mob issues arise from trying to either faceroll this quest, or by trying to stand back and shoot. Neither one is a very effective route to success. It's not made to be fought that way. Use the abilities Blizzard gave you, and get your butt into close range.

1. Move into melee range, use the 2nd stun ability immediately.
2. Then use the 3rd fire ability. (Note that it does double damage to stunned targets.)
3. Then just use the 1st fire ability until the stun recycles and the 3rd fire ability has about 1-2s of CD left. (Do NOT stun him the second it comes up - you are wasting
damage on the 3rd ability.)
4. Hit him with stun, then the 3rd fire ability for double-damage due to him being stunned.
5. Go back to spamming the first ability.
6. Rinse, repeat, win.

He should spend his time meleeing your dragon, and die with you having between 5-10k hps left on it.
Repeated this many many times testing - always works, always easy. Just pay attention to the relationship tween the 2nd and 3rd CD's - that's all ya gotta do. Non-complicated.

P.S. Him suddenly regenning hit points is usually due to evade issues. Get in his face. Land the dragon on the ledge next to him, hell on top of him if you want - and that should not happen. If it continues to after that - you've got a bugged mob.

I sort of went with the close up suggestion, but I have 9.2k health, so I kept getting killed.

I hit him with #2, then spammed #1, and befor he fully recovered I flew around the building and let #2 cooldown. After 3-4 rotations of this he went down without me taking any damage.

I've never had any problems with this quest before. This time ability #1 didn't work at all for me though. So I just kept doing #3 and #2 which got him down to 30% or so before my drake died. I had made sure I was over the ledge up in tower, so after that I just finished him off normally.

This quest is broken for me. I've tried over and over and no matter where I aim it, flame breath does not hit him. I can only damage him with #3. I finally gave up and just killed him without the drake. Its much easier that way.

So I tried doing this as a level 74 affliction warlock and died like 10 times after trying all the strategies I read on this page. After getting frustrated I just tried killing him without the drake and RAPED him... Ditch the drake, fly up to his tower and just beat the crap out of him.

Note: He will NOT move from his position. So if your a class that has dots. Run into line of site of him, dot him up, then run behind the little shack thing until your dots are about to expire then run back and refresh them and repeat until he is dead.

I tried this quest multiple times without success. Every time, he would get to like 1 or 2% health and no matter what I could not harm him further with the drake. I finally just flew around back of the shack, landed, and killed him myself.

This was way harder than it should be and I've got no idea why he would not die. If he's bugging for you, give this a go.

Just did the quest on my hunter, dragon got killed, I sent in my pet and run behind the hut, Mr. Thane never attacked it or moved, kept targetting me and did no damage while my pet finished him off easily.

After having read the posts here and failing 5 times, I finally figured out how to beat this:

1. You MUST be as physically close to him as possible to prevent him from casting "Volley".
2. If he does get a "Volley" off, use "Wing Buffet" (#2) to interupt it.
3. Cast "Molten Fury" (#3) whenever it is up.
4. Spam "Flame Breath" (#1) as much as you can.

Using this method I didn't take a single point of damage, only the dragon did. If you don't catch the "Volley" castings, they will hit your toon and kill you mid-air, one time of which I was unable to recover my corpse. That brought up nightmares of the early days of Ragnaros.

It is a matter of technique. You do need to be up close. At the end get right up on top of him. This way if you parachute you won't have to start all over. Be prepared to die if you don't get close to smell his breath or take out the two defenders down below. In the end since I am a rogue I had to jump off the platform(no dmg for rogues). There are no stairs which is why you need to up on top of him to finish him off if the dragon dies.

I flew right up onto him. Hit Wing Buffet every time it was up, used the fire dot every time it was up, spammed the main attack. My dragon died with the Thane @ 1500 health so I was able to complete the fight fairly easily (78 holy/disc priest lol)

You just need to make sure you're positioned in the right place immediately, any misses or "target needs to be in front of you" and you're stuffed. As mentioned above - "Spam flame breath, and use wing buffet whenever its CD is up, and you should win no problem. His melee strength is feeble compared to his ranged."

This has to be one of the worst quests I have seen on WOW. Did they even play-test this thing first? The first time I tried this quest the dragon died and my character flipped over onto the ledge dead. I couldn't get to my body and had to take the sickness. I tried it again just to be sure I hadn't done anything to cause it. Sure enough, the same thing happened. I was much further away that time. The third time I did it, but still. This quest flat out SUCKS.

1. Talk to the Drake at 26,77 in western Voldrune.
2. You'll the drake and fly a short distance north up the hill to 27,73 (pretty much the first building up the hill on the left)
3. Kill Thane, he is on the roof/balconny at the top of the building.

Broken/bugged/something seriously wrong with this drake. I read the tooltips on abilities 1, 2, and 3, was prepared for a vehicle fight ... and #1 didn't work. At all. I could get #2 and #3 to affect the mob, but ability #1 did nothing except use up a global cooldown. Tried from far away, tried from up close where he was meleeing me and hurting me ... nothing.

Gave up on winning with a broken vehicle, flew up there myself and just killed him.

to access him if you don't have flying mount, the quest says to go unchain the dragon in the west end of that area, go down the hill a little and they're you'll find dragon. Mount him, hit 1, 2, 3 and cycle through till he's dead on top of that tower.

Skip this, as of WoTLK Classic it's not possible to do unless you have a flying mount and can go up and solo him. You can't kill him with the proto-drake mount due to bugged scaling.

I'm with the users here stating that, at this time time of printing, that he will not Volley when in melee range. Volley on you means you too far away. Get in and he can't range you, just like any hunter needs to be at 10y or back or they can't use their bows, they have to melee you.

Use the middle button, Wing Buffet, like a rogue's stun when you're looking at the whites of his eyes. Then mash 1 (GCD) and 3 (longer cooldown) when in range. If he kills your mount, better have your dots up and kite him around the top of the platform like the towers in an AV. Dot, run/kite, he is dead.

Just did it on a level74 Demonology Warlock. Soloed with a Voidwalker, while using Health funnel, and when my health gets depleted: Drain Life. Occasional Life Tap for mana, Occasional Corruption and Curse of Agony.

Targeting and hit box on the drake is terrible. The first ability landed 1 out of 5 times. The only way I could kill him was melee range and hitting the stun + breathe as soon as they popped. Even at that it was luck.

Now that you've captured the flame-imbued talismans and weakened Voldrune's defenses, we can strike at its leader, Thane Torvald Eriksson.

The thane's favorite mount is an unruly proto-drake he calls Flamebringer. It is kept bound in chains in the western part of Voldrune, but with the talismans, you should be able to control it long enough to use it against the thane.

Once you have Flamebringer under your control, search the tops of the towers of Voldrune for the thane and show him no mercy.
