You must not engage the troll you wish to trap.
Tell Budd to hit him when you're about 20 yards away from the target.
If you screw up, you have to run all the way back to the camp to pick him up again.

to make the quest less frustrating, do the following couple things before talking:
1. make sure there is only one troll nearby - bcuz any add that hits u interrupts you from using the cage, or adds will kill the retard before he does anything
2. make sure there IS a single troll nearby, otherwise talkin to the retard will only make him attack the air

I found this quest to be quite easy and not frustrating at all, just don't charge in and take about five seconds to think instead of just rushing in and it could be one of the easiest quests in the zone.

Just ride straight south (13,61) . Try to avoid any combat situation where Budd is "tanking" as he only got 514HP.
Like said above, check the area for a single troll.

A tip: Avoid the first ruin wall when you hit the camp. There is almost always a troll shaman behind it which is getting into Budds attention span. He'll sap the wrong one for you and you run out of Budd and sap time ...

Very annoying. Took 4 tries.

1. You only get 3 minutes. (Failed cause I couldn't figure out how to "talk" to him - there was in fact a pet bar)
2. If you get aggro while laying the trap it will get interrupted and the mob will come out of sleep.
3. If you get aggro on the mob Budd tries to tag the tag will fail.

Any class: watch that Budd doesn't get stuck pathing around trees & get too far away from you. He'll despawn & you'll need to wait 3 minutes to pick him up again.

Paladins: Be *really* careful. Crusader Aura is bad here m'kay? Budd's not that quick.

This quest is quite annoying if you do it wrong.
Basically, as others have said, you need one on it's own.

It will interrupt if you get aggro from something nearby, plus Budd will be gone.

It's not hard, it's pretty easy if you know what to do.
Took me 4 tries.

A few tips more:
- he doesnt *your* target, when you hit the pet bar sap button, he tries to sap the nearest troll
- this includes already tapped mob
- the troll whoich you are going to sap has to be out of combat. So dont aggro him!

So after ~5 tries I did it like this:
- Approached the camp from west
- killed one serpent, waited till I was out of combat
- there was only one troll, I hit the sap button, then after the sap, ich ran into range of the cage device and trapped the troll
- so my advice: Let a buddy clear the area leaving only one troll behind and you are ready to go

Dunno guys, I just read all your comments and was expecting some horrible, buggy quest. But I just completed it 1st try without a problem at all. I hung around the outskirts of the troll camp, saw a single troll standing by itself a few yards in (near the temple-like building). I had Budd sap it. I ran in and used my cage. Quest complete.

I saw some other people running straight into the camp and trying to do it while avoiding wandering pats and other mobs (windserpents, etc). I assume this is why most of you had issues. Don't just run in. Take your time and do it correctly.

Doing it in 1 run patiently takes less time than running back 4-5 times. Neg me if you want, but if you do, you're just bitter.

Not very hard at all.

1) Take the quest.
2) Talk (right click) to Budd.
3) Budd will start following you, he goes right behind wherever you go for 3 minutes.
4) Ride south, near the toward 13, 61 (or the little arch under Granite Springs).
5) Avoid all mobs on the way, don't draw aggro to anything.
6) When you get there find an issolated (or clear the area around one).
7) Once you have a troll in sight send Budd in and use the Sap-looking button on your pet action bar.
8) Get close and as soon as he saps use the Bounty Hunter's Cage on the sapped troll.
9) Return the quest and get your XP. ;)

First step STOP! pick up BUDD hes at 16, 48
Next make sure you have an ACTIVE PET BAR or you can't do anything with Budd
Next go find a troll target him and pull him WATCH OUT Budd has like 1K health he's 2 shotted EASY
Once you have pulled the Troll IE you are <IN COMBAT> Budd's pet bar finally is usable
Click the "sap" looking button if you don't know which one that is mouse over the buttons and read.
Then when the troll is sapped (or sleeping) "ZZZ's" coming from his head
Click the cage in your bag.

This is a very poorly set up quest, patience is a definate virtue.
BTW all this must be done in 3 min... or Budd just walks away
if Budd Dies, or Gets bored (ie walks away) just go back to camp and get him again

Now for those that say they assume that the reason some of us had issues was cuz we were runnin in they may be incorrect I had issues cuz:
1) I didn't have my pet bar on
2) There is no "description" anywhere in the quest on how to "get budd to do anything"
3) They have changed the quest several times from talk to Budd out of combat to finally having a pet bar and having to be in combat.

A bit better quest discription would be good cuz I "did" take my time and it still took 3 or 4 times to get the dang thing

What annoys the hell out of me, is that for us warlocks, Budd replaces our minion. Yup, having Budd and a minion up at the same time is not possible. (I guess the same goes for hunters.) That alone was reason enough for me to hit the abandon quest buttom.

Don't ever try to catch one of the undead trolls, you'll be stuck with the 10 min debuff making you wait.

This quest is hell on a PVP server. Not only will you lose Bud if you are ganked and die, but you will have to run back to your corpse, run all the way back to get Bud again and come all the way back to do the quest. Definitely very time consuming and frustrating. Might want to do it at a time when it is abit slower.

Ok I know the problem people are having here, they are going north to the troll village of Zeb' Halak - DO NOT GO THEIR the Trolls are undead.

Take buddy SOUTH to loc 14 ,61 and then get within 20 yards and use his stun/sap then you'll be done this is a very easy quest that I was getting upset over because I did not read all the quest text. Real easy not bugged just have to go south... I saw about 4 other people north trying to sap undead trolls, trolls are bad enough with out wanting dead ones. I hope this was helpful

I've just failed this quest and come here to read. The only thing I can add is that Budd had 10 minutes attention span instead of 3.

As a BM Hunter, having brain-damaged Budd replace my pet was a definite DEBUFF. He aggroed everything in sight on the way to the troll ruins! If you're a hunter, track beasts, and pray ol' Budd doesn't run off...which he will do if you try to hit his Sap button (his only ability) in an effort to get him to help you fight off worgs.

Firstly, Budd can keep up with an epic mount.. which is nice.

Secondly.. don't let him get hit. He has NO health. I aggroed a Wolf and it had him down in 3 hits, before I even realized what happened. Now that was fail on my part but I just thought that you should be made aware of his fraility.

If the pet bar doesn`t show up and you don`t want to reset de UI, when you are in position use Ctrl+4, for the ones that use a player with pets they know this will activate the number 4 skill, wich is the one you need.

Well, I'm here to tell the Death Knights, that this was a really easy quest, believe it is the same for Warriors and maybe Paladins.

I ran straight south (the way I came up from Conquest Hold), if Budd had aggro I simply cast , or used the if it was only one mob, and they would change target to me instantly, leaving Budd unharmed.
Also a nice detail, Budd can keep up with a 100% ground-mount, haven't tried, but doubt he would fly by your side while mounted on a flying mount. ;)
Now, when you come within range of the troll you want to trap, Budd's petbar becomes active and you can use the sap ability, using this makes Budd run off after he sapped the troll, ergo he vanishes, so as read read above, using the sap ability on a non-troll will also make him disappear. Now, after Budd saps the troll, simply go to the troll and use , run back (this time there's no Budd to have to babysit.

Hope this was somewhat helpful.
Also, Budd can be found at cords: 16,48, or in the little hut closest to the burning troll-mummies and the drunk :)

If your concerned, walk over to the area and check it out.
You can kill any mobs on the way back, it is not that far.
I didn't have any trouble, but after reading all of the posts, I'm glad I scoped the area out first.

This has to be the stupidest, boring and frustrating quest i've ever experienced.
This moron, Bud, tortures you with his stupid jokes. I say torture, because you have to read them so you don't miss anything. Not that he says anything substantial. Then, while the idiot is telling jokes a troll takes him out with ONE HIT. More interesting fact is that you cannot summon your minion (if you are DK or whatever). THe second you do so, Bud goes back to camp. And you have to go all the way back to get bud and work with the joking idiot all the back to the Troll village. The quest seems to be built around Buds boring jokes because it is unlike any other quest where they put no intuitive sense nto it. You have to trial/error in order to figure it out. Hopefully, Blizzard will make this quest less frustrating and without all the 'let's make our users laugh' type dialog. Not saying laughing isnt good thing (I actually laughed at the nut quest where you eat a nut and have to poop it out), but this quest is not even close to funny and I have to eat an aspirin to finish it.

Just take Buddy follow the road it's a wolf a littte down the road don't let the wolf attack Buddy he has a few hp points (1500) ... once there....clear the area as long as you get aggro and not Buddy sap one troll shaman cage it and there you have a troll in a cage
(any troll works i've caged a shaman)

I dont see what everyone is complaining about in this quest.

Step by step guide, the easy way.
1) Go to the quest giver, nearby in that camp are 3 tents. In one of the tents is an NPC called Budd
2) Now talk to Budd, and get him to follow you (Just speak to him)
3) Now mount up and go back to the troll camp (Budd should follow you) pretty much directly South of the camp you are in
4) You should now have a pet action bar with aggresive defensive passive etc, go near to a troll and use the move it has to "Tag" a troll
5) Once it is tagged, target the troll and use the item you were given by the quest giver (Bounty Hunters' Cage)
6) Quest should be complete, now mount up head back to the camp and turn in the quest

2nd feedback after doing the quest after 4 months again: some good changes are in, Budd will not bug that easily, but still moronic quest design, you need to read a lot of external information(wowhead) and do the quest multiple times to apply workarounds.
Bad quest. And not one of those you can just skip it, it leads to major chains.

Horrible, horrible quest. Nigh-on impossible if you're a pet-using class and manage to aggro anything on the way - Budd replaces your normal pet, dies if an enemy even looks at him funny, and is generally a complete waste of space. Why they couldn't make him a "companion" that tags along with your regular pet, I do not know. If it wasn't a prerequisite for so many other quests, I'd say to abandon it and ignore it, but as it is there's not much choice...

Geez, howzabout something as simple as a question mark over Budd, like every other NPC in the game you're supposed to talk to has? While I realize Blizzard doesn't design these things with QuestHelper in mind, it didn't help that after I accepted the quest QH pointed me straight to the troll ruins so that I assumed Budd was hanging out with his troll buddies and went down there and hunted all over for him.

Dismiss pet before getting Budds buff. I summoned my DK pet and budd left me. Be careful. I learned this the hard way 2 times... and he has 1.6 HP and it's hard to keep him alive. and being and unholy DK and all, losing my pet was a complete DEbuff! The pet bar I get when I have Budd with me, looks exactly like a hunter pet bar.
There's no "sap" icon in it.

I've tried "engaging" with the trolls, both by actually getting into fighting, and by just tagging them.
It always end with them hitting at me and Budd running ov er to fight them, whereafter he dies.

I've tried clicking the icon that copmes up next to the minibar (telling about Budd's attention span), but that doesn't work either.

I obviously get nothing out of teling him to attack the trolls. He dies!

Guess I'll have to try it.

Yes, I've done the quest with three chars, but this is the first time I have trouble like this.

I hate giving up on quests. Sometimes it's really the most sane thing to do, but usually I just keep at it anyway, until I get it done. I guess I'm stubborn that way.

But still ... I HAVE been in battle with the trolls while trying to get Budd to sap them. It just doesn't work. He doesn'tr reacat to anything I try to tell him to do.

I've even tried hitting every single icon in the pet bar, except for "come back" and "passive". Maybe I should try Passive next time.

Okay, I abandoned and retook the quest, and this time the "sap" icon was in the pet bar.

However, it made no difference. Budd still doesn't react to it.

If I click it in safe distance, he doesn't react. If I get closer, so I'm in 'combat' with the troll, he doesn't react but heads over and fights the troll ... and dies.

... I'm giving up for now (Grrrr!).

Heh this one was different. I took budd down to the ruins and started looking for an "Ice Troll" ... literaly. Never found one with budd (twice) or alone ... spent an hour I bet. I put in a ticket then decided to experiment.

I went to get budd again and ran him down to the ruins. I positioned us on the edge of the ruins area. Then with noithing targeted or agroed I clicked budds bloody rebar knockout thing. Budd sorta got stealthy and snuck up to one of the "Warriors" and whacked him. I skipped over clicked on him and used the cage. He was neatly caged then and quest was complete. The thing that made me try letting budd look for the stinkin troll was thet he kept sayin "I kin smell 'em".

How was I to know that all those guiys were Ice trolls..... ha ha ... I edited my ticket and told them nevermind. God I seem to know how to make things hard. :)

This is the third time I'm doing this quest with three different cahrs. It is absolutly the worst, buggie, non-thought trough quest ingame.

1) Talk to him, he's in a tent at the camp and he'll follow you thereafter (but only for 10 mins.)

2) Hit the Follow button, if you don't Budd the retard will wander off and get lost.

3) Take the path of least resistance on your trip down south, I found the snowy edge was best.

4) When you get there just hit the Tag button on the menu bar, he'll find the closest troll and stun it.

5) While he's stunned click on the cage and trap the sucka. Easy quest, just follow those rules.

By the way, if necessary he CAN be healed with bandages.(##RESPBREAK##)272##DELIM##Uchur##DELIM##

This almost drove me crazy. I followed everything, and the only pet-bar I had on screen was Agressive, Defensive and Passive, no sap. Then after 5 attempts I noticed the edge of a button UNDER my paladin seal-bar. I moved the seal bar and there was the sap button (and the other buttons).

VERY annoying but finally solved it. So if you have extra bar-addons, move them around since they may hide the quest-specific buttonbar.

Another tip: before grabbing Bud, go down the hill and kill all the wolves first. It will make the trip much faster and easier.

As mentioned previously, this quest is outright horrible.

Didn't realize he was a pet, and didn't have pet bar up so didn't know till I came here to read up on it after he died the first time. I'm a paladin, but I could not heal my "pet", buff my "pet" nor did my "pet" gain the benefits of my auras. After noticing the quest rewards, all of which fall UNDER the quality of stuff I had pre WotLK, heck I think some of my pre BC stuff was better than this crap, I'm guessing that after the initial concept, this quest was created during "Bring your child to work day" at the office.

Horrible design, horrible implementation, horrible rewards... hoping that the followup quest(s) make it worth my while... otherwise, this quest was a horrible waste of time.

Does anyone at Blizz even play the game? How many classes would even remotely be interested in a sword that gives massive SP instead of AP? Shamans can't use it, druids can't use it and most other classes that do any melee are far more interested in AP. While mages and warlocks can carry it, they're clothies so they really try to avoid melee - preferring the damage that wands can do from afar. And since warlocks and mages can't dual wield, it's not like they can carry this sword in their main hand and a wand in their off hand.

Sure, pallys CAN take advantage of it...but even for them this is not their best choice.

Please, somebody give the programmers at Blizz an "Agent Gibbs slap to the back of the head" for me.

Get quest from Samir at 16, 47 Grizzley Hills.
He'll give you a cage.

Bud is in one of the little huts. Click to activate.
He will assist you for 2min 50 sec so Mount up and run
down to 13,60 avoiding the wolf mobs along the way.

Avoid the serpents at the temple.

Find a troll: DONT agro it.
Target it.
You have a pet bar for Bud.
Click the stun button on the pet bar.
Bud sneaks in and saps the troll.
You go up and click the cage.

Run off and leave Bud, he'll find his way back before you get there anyway.
Turn in the quest.

It is possibel to move too fast and leave Budd behind. If he gets far enough from you, he will go back to his hut. Bud get s adot like a party member - make certain you can still see Budd or his dot, or you will have to go back for him. (This may be what happened to the persno who targeted the troll and got no pet bar).

I started this quest, but didn't get the pet commands for Bud to show up. I fiddled around with it a bit and found out that a few of his commands can be done using the keyboard only. Ctrl+1 = Bud Attack / Ctrl+4 = Bud Stun
The stun is what you need to be able to use the troll cage on the stunned troll. Hope this helps those that encounter the same bug I came across.

Okay... I just made an account just for this quest...

Budd is in a tent at 16,48. The Trolls are at 13,60.
You have Budd attached to you for 10 min's. If you get attacked by a wolf it's no biggie just keep Budd alive. If he dose get hurt don't worry he heals fast. Just don't let him die!

If you need something to help you with cords you get get a Cord macro... it's:

Bethany I want to thank you for coords. I made the mistake initially of thinking I had picked up quest at Amberbine and looked for Bud there. When I got to the tent camp I dismounted but I couldn't dismiss my undead minion(DK). That wasn't a problem since as soon as I clicked on Bud and his radio button asking for assistance my minion disappeared. Bud followed me and I saw his command bar just like the one minions had. I had no problem clicking on his stun and him sneaking up and stunning a troll. Then clicking on the cage in my hotkeys and it was over quick.

I've tried this quest with good old Budd 5 times and have not seen even one troll anywhere in the Drak'Zin ruins. All I see are serpents & Drakkari Warriors. Have to abandon it.

The Drakkari Warriors and Shaman ARE the mobs you're looking for. There is no "Ice Troll" mob.

Use Budd's pet ability to sap one, then cage it.

Protip: make sure to set Budd's agression to Defensive or Passive. For me, he defaulted to Aggressive and died immediately to a bunch of wolves.

I just did this quest on my level 48 Warlock- demonology spec. I did not realize I was getting another pet bar for Bud. Did several attempts. Had a guildee come in on a level 10 Mechagnome Monk. She attempted the quest. Only with her knowledge of the game and pet bars were we able to solve this and completed the quest in 2 minutes.

TL;DR if you are a class that summons or has a pet bar, double check that Bud's name is there and find the stun option to complete quest.

For hunters, and probably warlocks, although it is true that Budd replaces your pet/minion, the other comments here only complain about that... you don't need to abandon.

What I found, for me at least, is Budd is automatically set to "Aggressive" which will cause him to attack anything close by. My pet was never set to this before, so I'm suspecting that might be what others are running into when Budd goes and gets himself killed by wolves.

I set him to "Passive" (Ctrl+0 if your pet bar is disabled) and he will stay by you... now all you need to do is weave your way down to the trolls, while avoiding aggro'ing wolves yourself... this isn't hard, just take your time.

'Ol Budd's seen better days.

Ever since our stay in Ghostlands he's been useless to us. We've had to find ways to make it on our own, and today that means sellin' trolls to the highest bidder.

Fortunately, we've recently found a use for Budd. Something about his condition allows him to mingle with the local trolls, so we taught him a little game that's turned us a tidy profit.

See for yourself. Talk to Budd, take him southwest to Drak' Zin Ruins and use this cage as soon as he tags a troll.
