Quite easy to do. I myself managed to do this by myself as a lvl 38 Fire Mage. Just make sure you don't stay underwater too long ;)

I would suggest either have someone give you underwater breathing or buy a few potions, many ofthe mobs are so deep that if u try to pull them to the surface they reset from distance.

I did this solo with my level 38 Shaman. All of the mobs are elite, ranging from around 35 to 38 so I'd recommend taking a group instead as it'll be a lot easier and quicker. Got 300 - 450 exp depending on the mob. !00% drop rate on the items as well so it can be done quickly.

Was able to solo this on 38lvl rogue. As undead the water didn't bother a lot. Was able to handle two mobs in same time when used blade flurry and evasion. When single-handeled no cooldows were used, only poisons.

Anyone know why I was unable to pick up this quest? I have not done any of the ones in this area. I am Level 42. Wanted to do it while I did the pearl quest.
Level 42, I found the NPC, only quests he had for me was the ZG one and one of the old low level ones.

Finished this quest solo as a 33 warlock with unending breathing and the old voidwalker...try to attack 1 at a time in the reef. Shadowbolt + dots + fear = death 75% of the time. Plus the 100% drop rate.

Very easy now after 2.3 as above have said, the murlocs are no longer elite. The drop rate is 100% which is great however you really are going to want a underwater breathing potion or a warlocks unending breath buff before hand. Its not needed but i'd recommend it because it sucks having to swim up to the surface after every kill, which you could just stay down there and get it done faster.

I did this as a lvl 34 shadow priest, the murlocs are mostly lvl 33-35, there are however a few lvl 37s but not many.

I went to the raceway to pick up this quest and the questgiver did not offer the encrusted tail fin quest (he offered a local one only). Is it no longer being offered?
All is okay, though, there were a couple of other "messenger/delivery" quests to ratchet and stranglethorn while I was there.

This quest is so annoying. They run away when they are almost dead, but the enter the rocks underwater. It most be some bug, i guess. Anyway, i can still kill them with spells, but i cannot loot them. It happened lots of times. Does anyone know anything about that?

I found this quite a pain as a warrior. Mobs were no problem, drop rate was 100%, but I had to pull them and swim up to the surface every time to avoid drowning, and they reset quite a few times.

Definitely recommend getting yourself some underwater breathing pots or an unending breath buff if you're a melee class doing this.

As a rogue for this one I would simply hit the casters with my ranged weapon and swim up to the surface. The caster would expend all mana and then just swim up to me.

36 Rogue they hit me for ~85 dmg for frostbolt and took off ~450hp before coming up to me.

Your mileage may vary.

EDIT: The oracles cast much harder than the Tide Lords I originally posted about.

Was anybody getting a fatigue bar? It will randomly appear and drop faster than my under water breath bar. I would quickly swim to the top and swim around the top of the water in order for it to go away.

As a level 41 mage I was able to solo this quest. If you are a caster don't let this one pass you by. The drop rate was 100% for me. I only had to kill 10 of them, and some of those were respawns. I died twice because I didn't manage my breathing, but then I learned that if I started off with Pyro, swim to the surface and then Arcane Missle til he was dead I would do fine. Obviously didn't have any underwater elixirs with me, but this quest is a must if you're doing 'The Vile Reef' as well.

It's really not that hard, I'm a level 39 hunter, and I shoot them, then come to the surface and they follow. That's it! No need for underwater breathing spells. The only way you would need one is for when they run away, they head straight for the bottom. But even then I come with at least half my breath.

I also don't even see the 38 elites you guys are talking about, I've only seen 35 and 36 and they all seem to have a 100% drop rate.

I soloed this quest at level 37 (druid) i kill only elite and the drop was 100%.
I wasnt hard (even easy), just took time, lol

if you can, try to only take the hunters, theyre attack speed is a pain but my imp can pretty much tank them, which is pretty funny but still these do no damage and have less health than the other murlocks in that area so take them not the others.

If you've made your way to the Badlands, then have the Pearl Diving quest with you. The giant clams that you need to loot for this quest are located where the Murloc elites that you have to do for Encrusted Tail Fins lurk.

So... at ~33 you gotta travel half way across the world, to fight MURLOCS, that are ELITE, UNDERWATER...then travel all the way back across the world, for about 3.5k xp and 75 silver?

Do yourself a favor.

Stay where you are, and grind. You'll make 10x the XP and cash in half the time.

Most idiotic quest ever.
This would be worth it if they gave you a nice green weapon maybe.

ok first of all just because you pick up the quest doesnt mean you gotta rush to get it done. wait untill you go into stranglethorn vale for a couple quests.

greater water breathing, or water buffs use. its actually quite simple, go out to the deepest thinnest part of the reef you will find the saltscale murlocs.(Stranglethorn vale: 25, 30) they are all elites. for food and drink after battles swim to (Stranglethorn Vale: 38, 32) there is a wrecked boat there in which its main mast is stickin up out of the water, jump on mast and heal, hit the water again and short swim back to murlocs. very simple just time consuming.

If you're going to be in the area of Vile Reef, and are Alliance, then be sure to pick up some other quests too that require diving on the reef.

First is the Kurzen Mystery quest (sp?) to in Rebel Camp (you have to do a couple others and kill Kurzen too to get it). You go around reading Troll Legends off stone tablets. One is in Vile Reef, behind wall to right (north) of glowing alter.

Also, the quest about the Stone of Tides is here too. Kill Pretty Boy Duncan, get the dagger, summon guy from that glowing alter in the middle of the ruins. (this is another chain quest.. 6-7 stages).

1) I'm undead, so that makes this MUCH easier. Solo'd these as a 37 priest.

2) Just use the z-axis and pull them straight up. Reduces aggro fairly well.

3) Avoid the shaman/hunter model.. gatherers or foragers I think. They SUCK.

I would highly advise getting an underwater breathing potion from the AH. It would make this quest a lot simpler and easier. The murlocs are all lvl 36 elites so I would suggest getting a tank, and a couple dps' to complete the quest. They are too far down under water to pull them to the surface, so the whole group has to get a breathing potion. You can pull one by one but be VERY careful as far as aggro is concerned.

If you are considering this quest, you should obtain the invaluable hydrocane from Gnomeregan. Now you will not need the assistance of potions, or pulling murlocs to the surface so you can still breathe!

You need kill lvl 34-39 Elite Saltscale Murlocs.

They all under water,
so remember 1x Elixir of water Breathing.

You find them in Water at Strangelthorn Vale
Cords: 27,3 - 21,9

For those with No Cord's Path.
Walk from booty bay to Bal'lal Ruins and go out in the water, then swim in direct SOUTH line to Gurubashi Arena, there in The Vile reef they Hide most of them very deep.

Swim from North to south, then you can pick them out 1 by 1, 100% Droprate.
Dont forget to take the Giant Clam = Blue Pearl

i did this Quest in 10-15 min when i arriwed in Booty Bay

Just wait until you're 40 to solo, and do in conjunction with Pearl Diving (you get it from the Badlands). I'm a 40 shadow priest doing it easily without any breathing potions.

It's best to stick to the warriors and the foragers because they're melee classes so they'll follow you to the surface easier. Just swim down, open with whatever spell you want (or just do what your class does), swim back up, and every so often attack them with an instant spell or a wand or whatever so they keep following you. When you get to the surface, have a field day.

I found most of mine around (25,30). Happy hunting.

easy solo with lvl 37 hunter, just shoot them then bring them up to the surface, be sure to use mend pet while your pet is tanking, my dragonhawk was my tank btw

As of patch 2.3, the murlocs are no longer elite. Drop rates are still 100%, too!

Was an easy quest for my 38 Paladin. :-)

I put up a screen shot of where the murlocs are, as to when the screen shot will show up under the quest is a different story.. lol

Anyway, you can get to it via stranglethorn or by the horde camp Grom'gol Base Camp.. but wouldn't suggest doing that if you're not horde hehe. Also, as the one above me said they are no longer elites, tho they are very far underwater. I ended up swimming under the water until I was in range and shot them once, then swam back up to the surface, then got my pet to attack it. Took some time since I had to do them one at a time, but if you had as mentioned the underwater breathing potion would likely make it a lot faster... but still doable without :)

Coordinates were right on for those without, there is a shipwreck, just sw of it they are deep under, i used a water potion as my alt is an alchemist,lol. only a few brought help, other wise it was 2 on 1 for me and my pet. you can do easy by diving down and shooting and kiting to surface, just takes longer.

Fairly hard quest for all those who cant breath under water for too long lol , was easy to kill those who r close to the top of the water but if going down deeper its very tricky /dangerous . ( completed at 32 priest ) not hard to find neither as its right between the letters in THE VILE REEF(on the map )

I soloed with a 34 Mage. There is a camp of them a little off the coast of Bal'Lal Ruins. It's relatively close to land, and they are like, 1 level lower.

don't listen to the people who write oh its soooo easy when their characters can breathe underwater :x they are REALLY deep... as in i drowned before i could even kill 1. you need to either make or buy a water breathing potion from the auction house 1st!

This quest is a gift from the designers. These guys are no longer elite and when I did it, the drop rate was 100%. You should probably be doing Pearl Diving (from the Badlands) at the same time and they work perfectly together. The "drop rate" (loot Giant Clams) on that one is 100% as well.

Even if you don't have the Pearl Diving quest, loot the Giant Clams and sell the Blue Pearls in the AH or save them for when you get the quest.

You'll need a breathing potion if your class is not underwater-equipped. Trying to do it without one will just irritate you and waste your time.

The Vile Reef is an underwater region off the NW coast of Stranglethorn Vale. It looks like a corla reef in a trench, quite pretty really.

The murlocs are level 35-37 elite. Their hp's were quite big, but their dps didn't seem any larger than for normal 35-37 mobs. The encrusted tail fins were an automatic drop of each one we killed.

I was a 37 druid paired with a 37 hunter, and it took us a little over 30 minutes to kill the 20 we needed.

While there, keep an eye out for clams. These were pretty common, and they contained blue pearls, which I gather are needed for another quest (although I am afraid I don't know which quest at this time).

While doing this quest, I recommend doing The Vile Reef ( The Vile Reef and Pearl Diving Quest (Pearl Diving at the same time.

Soloing this as a 36 paladin, a few notes:

1) Underwater breathing is a must if you're melee. Either befriend a warlock or shaman or buy/make some pots.

2) Saltscale Hunters prefer to use their ranged attack... but it does half as much damage at range as it does at melee. You may find that Saltscale Warriors are easier to kill if you're melee.

3) Even if you don't have the Pearl Diving quest, you may as well collect some blue pearls while you're in the area.

the city is not on the letter e of The. Instead, swim north from the letter h of "tHe vile reef", u'll find the city between the word "the" and the coast.
If you are a mage, you can rest on a rock nearby.

I soloed this quest at level 35 (as a paladin). I fought the level 36 warriors (elite) and they were fairly easy kills. Just keep your mana up and heal through it.

Note that these are now the only murlocs that drop the Fin.

I would really like to know how to do this without drowning. I am not about to pay a gold for an elixer on a quest that only pays 75 sp. I see no way of soloing this as a warrrior. By the time I get down to them my breath is half gone and they won't follow to the surface. So by the time I kill a murloc, I drown. Not having any fun with this quest at all.

I did this quest as a 28 Undead shadow spec'd Priest. Undead breathing made this quest much easier, however it was a pain waiting for my mana to regenerate in the water. As a priest, you should bring light feathers with you in order to drink at the surface.

These murlocs didn't hit extremely hard, despite being Elites. It just took a while to get their health down (I stuck with the lower level 35's and 36's), usually running out of mana and having to use my wand.

Don't forget that they will run for a few seconds while their health is low, then come back to you. This is a good time to get a few ranged shots in and allow your mana to regen a bit.

I can confirm the coords (Titan 25, 29) near the words "VILE REEF" on the world map.

Tough finding an alliance group for this quest since only about 1 out of every 50 alliance do something in Thousand Needles besides pass through it to get the Gadget FP.

Did this quest solo at 38 as Shadow Priest. Was easiest to kill the Saltscale Hunters. Also, underwater breathing buff/pots help.

10 kills, 10 drops. Took about 15-20 minutes to do this.

Well, I didn't have the ingredients so my alchemist could make the underwater breathing potion, so I just lured them to the surface to kill them. Stay away from the hunters or any casters because they will not follow you to the surface. I stuck to the warriors & foragers.

Seal of Justice was a great option. I didn't test it, but murlocs have a tendency to run off, so I wasn't chancing it in the water.

I am pretty positive my drop rate for this quest was 100%. Same for the blue pearls---I got one for every giant clam shell I opened.

This quest is easy like piss, basically you have to kill 10 murlocs (droprate is 100%) and they are not even linked that much. HOWEVER, a detail in the quest makes it nightmarishly hard: aforementioned murlocs live so deep in the sea it's absolutely impossible to fight them there without drowning if you don't have a warlock friend or potions.
As a hunter however I found a way to pull them. Use Eyes of the Beast and put your pet on passive. The pet can't drown, make him aggro a murloc, cancel Eyes of the Beast and press "Follow". He's going to swim to you trailing the murloc to the surface, and there you can kill it. Use concussive shot when it's low on health to prevent him from going too deep down upon fleeing.

There are more murlocs to the side of the ruins, just around the abyss which you'll see on the minimap. I farmed 0-10 there with no interruptions. As was mentioned in other comments, the fins are 100% drop.

Soloed as 36lvl Enhancement Shaman, but I recommend 2-manning it for the best experience. The "hunters" have a basic ranged attack but do overall low damage. The "foragers" are nasty, having both Rend and Poison. The "warriors" have nothing, just slightly higher damage. Both the "oracles" and "tide lords" are casters and are only found in the ruins. I never had to fight them.

Pro tip for casters: there are some rocks that reach the water's surface which you can climb on to drink. As a shaman, I used Water Breathing and could just sit on the water's surface with Water Walking to drink.

If you're Horde, make sure to pick The Vile Reef. The tablet is in the ruins, right next to the big blue altar.

This is one of those quests where you need to think about the time and potion commitment as well as the better-than-average possibility that you'll get to have more than a few conversations with the Spirit Healer. Kilmer009 below probably has the most-accurate analysis but RoshRoshan's approach is good if you're a borderline masochist and decide to do it anyway.

Many if not most of the mobs are in pairs or groups so in some cases you can pull one and the other won't come but in some others, you'll end up accidentally pulling two elites. Not a breezy walk in the park. Oh wait, I meant swim. Which means you can't eat or drink while you're swimming. Which means your trips back and forth from a handy rock or the shore will take some time. A lot of time.

You'll need two water-breathing potions at a minimum. Killing elites is not generally hard except that each one is like killing two level X mobs back to back, so if you're not a self-healing class, you're going to use up a lot of healing potions. As RoshRoshan noted below, skip the Foragers.

You could also run afoul of some of the early mechanics issues of Classic. Two Hunters I got down to about 4% fled and never came back. I never found them or their corpses (no loot, no XP...) but I guess it was lucky they didn't return with a friend. Make sure you have some kind of ranged weapon. The Warriors are the easiest but they too have that 40-foot sword thing that Classic never sorted out (mostly with rogues) where they flee some distance from from you but but then can still beat on you from 20-40 ft. away. Wish I had one of those swords!

None of these things are terminal by themselves but you'll spend 2-3 times as much time and money on this quest as others and the reward is not very...special. Unless you really, really like the Vile Reef or have four other quests here, leave this one on the shelf.

Definitely keep a water breathing potion or two in your bags for this quest. It will make you life much easier because the murlocs that drop the fins are very deep.

managed to do this on my 33 hunter, seems to be a 100% drop rate and i was able to get it done in about 20 minutes. possibly could have done faster but i wasn't paying attention to my ammunition supply and ran out. had to return to the surface just about every kill but there are a few spots where you don't have to dive terribly far to get to the murlocs.

Our rocket car is the fastest thing on the flats! So fast that ... I'm afraid friction is going to tear it apart!

To prevent that I need to create a composite to coat the car's moving parts. It must be hard but not brittle, and must be resistant to salt corrosion, or time spent on the Shimmering Flats will eat it away.

Have you heard of the Vile Reef, <name>? It's off the coast of Stranglethorn Vale. Saltscale murlocs live there, and their tail fins are a crucial ingredient of my composite.
