So, anyone know why this ring is ilvl 187 when the equivalent dps/healing rings are 200? In fact, this is the only WotLK epic that's below ilvl 200. Is blizz afraid of tanks outgearing content too early or something? Or did the dev who designed this ring not get the memo that crafted epic rings are ilvl 200?

I believe it needs summing up:

The fastest way to crit-immunity is indeed resilience. An identical piece with defense vs. resilience will have much better progress towards crit-immunity through resilience. However, what you also get from resilience is the reduced impact of critical strikes, mana-drains, etc etc, which is basically useless considering the point is you don't want to be crit in the first place. What you get from defense is avoidance/mitigation in the form of dodge/parry/block which is good for PVE.

If you want to get down to it, the point is to reduce the chance to be crit by 5.60%, the crit chance for a +3 (ie raid boss) mob in level. How it works is a mob has a base 5.0% chance to crit you when you're an even level. However, it increases by 0.04% per level of defense that you are below the weapon skill of the enemy (which is always maxed, 400 for a 80, 405 for 81, 410 for 82, etc etc). Each level increases by 0.2% as you can tell so that is where the 5.60% comes from. All that matters at any level to be honest is reducing your chance to be crit by a +3 level mob by 5.6%.

One thing to note about resilience is that it's great for resistance sets. Resistance gear usually seriously lacks defense and you're going to really have to cram in -crit % as efficiently as possible (ie with resilience).

Comments seem to have gone off on a tangent so lets bring this back to discussion on the ring, not reaching uncrittable.

You will not find a better ring without stepping into 10/25man raiding, and comparing this ring to those that are attainable outside of Heroic raids will show how awesome it is:

Without being a JC, putting a https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40008 will grant you an extra 4 def rating (of course JC's themselves could customize this ring more to their needs with the Dragon's Eye cuts).

Taking this example and comparing it with https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40426 which drops from 10 man Sartharion would result in this ring having:

+14 stamina
+14 strength
-2 def rating
+34 dodge
-35 parry
-29 expertise

An excellent ring for any plate wearing tank.

Pre-raid tanking druid rings post-patch:

1. Keystone Great Ring (H Drak'Tharon) even without the armor multiplier
2. Titanium Earthguard Ring (430 JC)
3. Hemorraging Circle (H Gun'Drak)
4. Signet of Edward the Odd (world BoE)
5. Titanium Impact Band (430 JC)
6. Band of Torture (H Oculus)

The armor and non-armor rings are all now pretty close in value, which seems to be exactly what they're going for.

I just disenchanted my Titanium Earthguard Ring and got 2x void crystals. I'm not sure if that's a glitch or not, I was checking here to see what it DE's into or if anyone else had that happen, but I was pretty sure it should be abyss crystals. Who uses void crystal's at lvl 80 when you have replaced this ring with better? =)

In the Opinion of a pure avoidence pally tank.
I think this ring is the 2nd best ring in current content, Next to https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40107. If your all geared in the best gear in current content Defense rating should not be an issue, The badge ring https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40718 is all DR and hit+exp, any pally with the expertise glyph+talents and https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40328 or the tier 7.5 helm https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40581 will be SOFT expertise capped(no parries). Hit is ok if you get it...Personaly I would rather have the extra Dodge, Strength, and Stamina from this ring socketed than the defense rating, hit, and expertise on the Badge ring https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40718. The badge ring in my opinion is 3rd best.
This is in my opinion of how I gear, Warrior and DK tanks may want the hit+expertise, but I think for a pally the best ring combo is this and Sand-Worn band https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40107.
I do keep https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=40718 in my bags for when i need more defense, such as with my frost resist set.

So let me get this straight and forgive my stupidty. If as a Pally I have 555 defense that is my base 400+155 giving me 763 defense rating is that over doing it? Or is that still under cap an if not what is cap?

It seems this ring is bugged for druids. Need some confiirmation from other users.

Ingame it gives me 75 armor in normal form and 467 armor in bearform. The tooltip ingame and here doesnt show any armor at all.

I just found out as i was swapping around rings.

It appears it doesnt apply for other classes, a warrior whispered me that it didnt add armor for him.

to Fruhauf, it seems that since the item was listed as a level 187 before patch 3.1, DEing it would only give you Void Crystals unfortunately =/ sooo just bad luck on your time to DE I suppose.

I personally go for avoidance, however this ring seems great either way. One of the highest dodge rings in the game...

Druids are supposed to get their dodge from agility, not dodge/defense rating (there's no level 80 leather armor with dodge/defense rating, ever wonder why?). Druids get 1% dodge from 41.667 agility or 39.348 dodge rating (note: 1 agility = 1 dodge rating in terms of itemization). With three points in Survival of the Fittest it takes 39.308 agility for a druid to get 1% dodge. Warriors and DKs need 73 agility and paladins need 53 agility for 1% dodge (link). That's why plate-wearing tank gear has dodge and defense, not agility.

The defense on this ring (including the +4 for the socket bonus but ignoring what you'd get from the socketed gem) gives you 0.2347% dodge. The dodge rating gives you 0.8641% dodge. Combined, that's 1.0998% dodge from 29 defense rating and 34 dodge rating.

It takes 43.231 agility for a druid to get as much dodge. If you could easily factor in the damage mitigation that agility gives you from armor and increased crit (for savage defense), you'd need less than 43 agility to match this ring in mitigation. There are many rings in the game with more than 43 agility (link).

Mitigation aside, this ring gives you no crit. Crit is important not just for rage/threat generation, but for savage defense. A ring with 43 agility would give a druid just as much avoidance, 0.547% more crit, and 91 more armor. Agility is a druid's primary tanking stat because it gives you defensive stats more efficiently than defense/dodge/crit ratings. If a piece of armor doesn't have agility, it better be your idol or trinket =)

...with stamina to keep up with the rest.

Druids have to deal with the fact that leather tanking armor has less stamina than plate tanking armor (link). That's why druids have more talents and abilities to increase their stamina. If a druid can tank just fine with lower stamina boots, belt, gloves, etc. they can tank just fine with lower stamina rings too.

Taking a high stamina, no agility piece like this means you are losing out on something. In this case you're losing out on crit. Get Hemorrhaging Circle instead. It's close on AP, has good stamina, is better on avoidance and crit, and has expertise. For a second tanking ring get Mobius Band. Bjarngrim Family Signet and Stained-Glass Shard Ring are good pre-heroic tanking rings.
