Muramasa (村正) was a 16th-century Japanese swordsmith with a violent temper. His swords were popularly believed to be cursed with a thirst for blood.

I'm not a fan of including it in WoW, especially not with a model like that. Famous sword names like this, Excalibur and the like belong in Final Fantasy, not here IMHO :(

Muramasa is named after the famous Japanese swordsmith, Sengo Muramasa. Muramasa, though skilled, was said to be violent and unbalanced, and legend has it that those traits were passed on to his swords, popularly believed to be bloodthirsty, driving their owners to commit murder or suicide.

Muramasa blades are often contrasted against blades by another swordsmith, Okazaki Masamune, and blades named both Muramasa and Masamune frequently appear in fictional works, including many RPGs.

Sengo Muramasa was a famous swordsmith who founded the Muramasa school and lived during the Muromachi period of 16th century in Japan. Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook said that Muramasa "was a most skillful smith but a violent and ill-balanced mind verging on madness, that was supposed to have passed into his blades....They were popularly believed to hunger for blood and to impel their warrior to commit murder or suicide."

The school of sword-making at Ise province was famous for the extraordinary sharpness of their blades. The earliest known work of the school is dated at 1501; the Muramasa school continued into the late 1500's.It's believed that Sengo Muramasa was a student of Heianjo Nagayoshi, a prominent Kyoto swordsmith known for spears and engravings.

Muramasa's swords fell out of favor with the Japanese government when Tokugawa Ieyasu became shogun, establishing the Tokugawa Shogunate, in 1603. It is said that Ieyasu had lost many friends and relatives to Muramasa blades and had cut himself badly with one, so he forbade his samurai to wear blades made by Muramasa. This contributed even more to the Muramasa legend and led to many plays and dramas in Japanese literature featuring the blades. Due to the stigma attached to them, many Muramasa blades had their signature changed or removed. Since opponents of the Tokugawa Shoguns would often wish to acquire Muramasa blades, forgeries of Muramasa blades were also often made.

The swords of Muramasa are often contrasted with those of Masamune, another Japanese swordsmith.

There is a legend of a Masamune blade and a Muramasa blade being put into a river strewn with lotus leaves. The leaves swirled around the Masamune blade untouched, but the Muramasa blade cut them.

It has also been told that once drawn, a Muramasa blade has to draw blood before it can be returned to its scabbard, even to the point of forcing its wielder to wound himself or commit suicide.Thus, it is thought of as a demonic cursed blade that creates bloodlust in those who wield it.

Name asside, this is an excellent sword for Rogues. Hit rating, and even some haste as a nice side bonus. From the looks of it, it's the most powerful one handed sword in the game. 365 Max Damage..

I applaud the history lesson laid down regarding the swords origin, and the stats are excellent as well. But am I wrong for thinking that the designers are going a little overboard with the newer looks? This model and many others are a bit much, does anyone else think that they should take a break and keep it simple just for a change. Of course a signature look makes it unique, but I think the envelope was shoved on this occasion...Does anyone else think it looks like a fancy beer bottle opener??

Saying that Katanas are two-handers only IS incorrect, as the previous post said they are pair with smaller swords, if anything Katanas have more in common with Bastard swords. in terms of handle and size. The twohanded katanas your thinking of are called Daikatanas.
Anyways with rant aside, this weapon is pretty good for rogues off-hand due to the avarage damage, though to me this feels more like a Fury warrior's.

history information:

In the Japanese history, it was rumored that the grandfather of Tukogawa Ieyasu, the first general of the Tukogawa era, was killed on the battlefield with one of the Muramasas. Therefore, when Ieyasu ended the Zengoku era (age of wars, generals had power over emperors before meiji era) he demanded that all Muramasas to be destroyed, people owning or hiding Muramasas would commit treason and be executed. Ever since rumor says that Muramasas were cursed or haunted with bloodthirsty spirits. (for the same reason, Muramasas were also called blade of rebellion) However, Muramasa was still famous for it's heroic craftsmanship. When Tukogawa was overthrown, many Muramasas were found in the vault of the general. They are now stored in various museums in Japan. A Muramasa can value over a billion yen (that is without saying that they all age over 500 years). Another rumor was that Ieyasu was cut toying with a Muramasa in his childhood.

Others say that in the age of Tukogawa, craftsmen in Japan started to change their fashion of katana as a result of 500 years of peace in Japan. The katana became thinner and lighter(unsuitable for combat but more of a symbol of status and power, or more decorative purpose). Since then the previous styled katana were called evil. Muramasa was one of the most famous of which.

On a side note Sanada Yukimura, a warlord in Zengoku era, won many victories with Muramasa and won him the famous name: the samurai of samurai, Sanada the true samurai, or the best of all samurai.
