According to some other site, this drops off some Coilscar Cobra in center north of Shadowmoon Valley. I've killed 12 or so now, and I've seen 0 :(

There are some nagas in that camp as well. No biggy if you're level 70.

The Coilskar Cobras definitely drop these, though the drop rate is pretty low. There is a cave you can enter and farm them, though you'll also have to clear the naga. From just my experience, I killed and skinned about 45, and got the two scales I needed. There is also an easy escort quest in the back of that cave that will give you about 23g and a decent green.

yes the drop rate is very low, but if u look at the items that these make, u can understand, since when has making blues and epic items been easy? i think this is one of those things thats "if u want a blue item that doesnt drop, ur gonna have to farm it." To me some of the items are like items u need eight lava cores for, u must work for it... but yes cruddy drop rate but i can see why. plus try the AH it might be easier to farm gold rather than farm the item, r u could make a ton of g off it.

In spite of the terrible droprate, these are pretty easy to farm if you have patience. The mobs are always teamed up in two and sparsely flanked by Naga. At level 70 it's easy to just fly in, land and kill them without getting into trouble from the fish-people. From my experience, the best way to get them is farm them on the outside, as mobs seem to be respawning faster there.

based on about a 1000 kills I skinned 60 Cobra Scales. That's a really really low droprate. With some bad luck you spent over 30 minutes before the first one 'drops' for you. Sometimes I've been extremly lucky and skinned a scale from each of the pair.

I emply two 'tactics': either I farm the water elementals outside for motes of water and always take the cobras as a bonus. Or I go inside the cave. As a rogue I can stealth/bypass many mobs, I usually kill only the patrols and with a distract I also can usually manage to pull only one of the cobra's. Else it's Blade Flurry time.

I do a short round. When you just follow the cave at some point you can go right and left, right is towards the quest NPC and left is towards an short path where the 2 cobras aren't stationary but moving up and down a bit. There you can jump down again and the cobras you killed there first should have respawned.

Me and one fury warr farmed those yesterday and luckily we obtained 20 of them in about 1h30 or so ( we farmed in the cave )
That's about 400+ gold in my realm, not bad :)

In patch 2.1.0, mobs in Nagrand will drop Cobra Scales along with the mobs in Shadowmoon Valley, so it should be a bit easier to find mobs to obtain these.

As a rogue I stealth around the cave, sap the patrol that walks near the cobra's (it seems each pair has a pat) and blade flurry the 2 down. I'm only able to take a pair every 2 minutes this way but its effective. By the time i reach the beginning of the cave again the first pair has just about respawned (only a few times i had to wait). With this strategy they were incredibly easy and fast to grind for me

Well, do the math; thick clefthoof leather has about a 32% drop rate ideally and requires 4x as much for an equivalent kit.... so an 8% drop rate is about right when you only need 2 of them, and this site is showing just under 10%.

I would have to agree with Xinaxdazex that the other mobs will make it easier to get the scales, if not just for accessibility then hopefully a slightly buffed drop rate.

Remember this too; it could be worse, blizzard could just remove the notion of "motes" and go back to essence.... *blech*

You can (as of patch 2.1) also skin the Twilight Serpents in Nagrand (in The Twilight Ridge west of Forge Camp Hate) for the Cobra Scales.

The drop rate seems to be about the same, around 6%.

Flew out here this morning when patch came live to see how it was and there a pain in the butt to get to and a horrible drop rate. Suggesting to stick around in shadowmoon valley lol.

I have been farming primal airs north of the Altar of Sha'tar in shadowmoon and noticed blizz added a new mob called shadow serpent, i decided to skin a couple and in the few times i have i've gotten 1 cobra skin outta 10. Maybe thats just good luck, thought others might wanna check them out

The droprate is insanely unstable.
I have farmed the whole cave of coilskar cobras (4 cycles) to get just 2 cobra scales and i have killed about 30 shadow serpents to get 1!! cobra scale.
That didnt happen yesterday when i got 5 scales from 25 coilskars/serpents.

Still the droprate is really low and disappointing, considering me that i will have to abandon skinning to raise lw. :(

The Twilight Serpents in Nagrand are the best bet, there are no other hostile mobs and the time I've spent up there I've yet to see another player.
Just work your way from one end of the plateau to the other, time you've done that the first mob will have re spawned again.

I find the drop rate to be identical to the Coilskar Cobras.

(Theres also 3 or 4 rich adamantite deposits around the area which is a bonus).

There are 8 or so of the cobras in the middle of Coilskar in Shadowmoon. You will need to clear a few mobs to get to them unless you have a flying mount.

In Nagrand you will also need a flying mount to get to Twilight Ridge. The snakes there are on the western edge of the ridge, and there are wandering elites and other 70+ mobs there.

The easiest way to farm these is up to the north of The Altar of Sha'Tar behind the hills. There are some snakes, a named elite that wanders (easily avoidable) and a bunch of elementals. If you are farming these to make the armor kits, you can get everything you need by farming in this area. You get motes from the elementals, leather and scales from the snakes and leather from the scorpions.

i like this farm, i went through the cave 3 times in a row and each time off of each of the two pulls i skinned atleast 1 Cobra Scale, so after those runs i went off to find some primal airs on the AH, got them and made 4 Nethercobra Leg Armors and started rolling in the cash, nice nice farm.

I went to farm Twilight Ridge for around 30mins.
And I got myself 4 cobra scales, knothhide leathers, and some green stuff.
Pretty decent, tried Coilskar Cistern a few days ago, and no cobra scales for me.

It's really up to you.The drop rates are all the same depending on your luck and class.If you are low dps class then you should go to twilight ridge because it's safer but it's overfarmed (Atleast on my realm)If you are Ninja of doom or like they like to call em - Rogues, you should go to the Coilskar cistern. The drop rate for these is so low that it might seem to some that they won't drop without skinning. This isn't true. The drop chance is much, much higher when you skin them, but I have gotten one or two without skinning.

If an item has a low drop rate (5%) it is not very hard to see why you will not get anything for 60+ minutes. That is, the odds of you NOT getting a scale is .95, so .95^15 (15 skins of the cobras or serpents) is not super low. In laymans terms, you are probably NOT going to get a scale when you make the kill, which is why these things go for 25 gold easy on Boulderfist.

Plus, to some of the people who posted above me, these scales must be skinned. No one will ever get heavy clefthoof leather from killing a clefthoof...otherwise what's the point of going skinning? You have to skin after you kill.

This is the same for wind scales in blade's edge as well. Gotta skin the beasts you kill. Otherwise, have fun, easy source of money, especially if you farm cobras while waiting for nodes to respawn.

Farming the Twilight Serpents in Nagrand is probably the best way I've made money so far. I usually get ~10 per hour, and on my server they sell for 30g, so combined with the other leather they drop, its easily 400g per hour. Especially now when people need nethercobra leg armor for S4 legs.

Although it's worth mentioning that as a rogue, it's slightly irritating that you will get in combat alot because of the "fleeing" birds, so getting an opener can be hard some times. They usually go down pretty fast anyway :)

These are my favorite item to farm. in about 2 hours i can get a full stack of 20 and the Scales sell for about 25g each so a stack is 500g. and its also nice with all the extra leather to lvl my LW. lol

Ok just to clear it up a bit.
The Cobras in Nagrand that can be skinned for the scales are shown as non-hostile monsters. The birds flying around appear to be hostile mobs, however! they don't kill you. They can come very close, and sometimes it'll put you into combat mode, but they won't attack you. Unless, ofcourse, you attack them. But even then, they probably fly away, and these things are fast.

Twilight serpent in nagrand is a really good place to farm these. i got 40 in 1 hour - 2 hours. very as and they sell really good on AH. o my server (skywall) i sell em for 30-33g. i made 600g+ with 20. these NPC's dont have much health so you can knock em down really easy. i kill em with no problems i am a PvP rouge.

location showing shadow serpent a nightmare for me, ran around that area on map for almost 40 minutes, saw one serpent, got one scale, no repop for 10 minutes. left, my advice, go anywhere else u can find these.

hello, after reading all the post on this item (Cobra Scales) i wonder why all the nagrand comments is currently unrated or downrated. I have probably farmed over 1000 cobra scales in twilight ridge. Where is it? Its far west in Nagrand on a summit. Cords 19,35 in Nagrand You need a flying mount or druid flight for to reach this place. The route i will recommend is that you start from the ledge where the tauren and a little hut is. you go straight west up the hill and trough the tunnel to see that there are 2 more serpents there. go back trough the tunnel. jump off the little cliffside to the right. and go around the big tree and then wait for repawns. If you have an epic flying mount. you can maximise this route to include the ones in the acctual twilight ridge, where the elite mobs are. land on safe spot and try to pull the serpens with range. I myself have a rogue using trown weapons. Another thing. Forget coilscar if you purely is out for Cobra Scales. Less time killing trash more time to farm what you're looking for. I hope that cleared som missunderstadning here. lots of confusion.

I've found that skinning the twilight serpents located in Nagrand is the best way to go. There is a warlock camp that has a few, (I wouldn't recommend farming there...many elites). But if you go to the entrance, there are two serpents there. Once you kill them and exit via the cave, there are several out there and 0 aggressive NPCs, (the birds are red, but they will not attack you).

While they may share the same loot table as the shadow serpent or the coilskar cobra, it's substantially easier to kill the twilight serpents. Once you clear the area, you can return to where you've started and the first ones have already re-spawned.

I usually start with the two at the camp entrance, exit through the cave, then work the area there clockwise, return to the camp entrance, then repeat.

...still pain in the arse drop rate, though. ;)

I've had these drop off naga before, the 60-61 ones in Zangar. Not skinned, a loot drop. Though, in the 100000+ naga I've killed, only gotten 4.....so...the cobras are probably a MUCH better bet.

I don't know whether the drop rate has been changed since 2.3.2 but I am getting considerably higher rates than most of you people...

I have just farmed these for only 45 minutes in the Twighlight Ridge area immediately surrounding Watcher Elaira and got 10 of these out of 63 kills!

Give it a try in this area.

Note: I know it sounds obvious but you have to skin the serpents to get the scales: It would appear some of you are expecting a standard drop.

This goes for 60 gold on most servers if not more, I'm on tichondrious and it sells for 60+ consistantly, only cause skinners can get it and its a less than 5% drop, so i thin its worth it for those pants kit you can make with it

I've only ever skinned these in the nw of Nagrand cause I prefer the area.. I used to be able to get a few each time I went up there for an hour or so.. I'm not getting any now. :( I hope this string of no luck breaks and they suddenly start pouring in.

Yeah the drop rate is fairly low. These aren't selling that great on my server. Initially I sold 1 for 40 gold, but now they aren't even selling for 25 gold. /shrug If they are selling on your server for 60 gold that is amazing, but I just don't believe it.

I've been farming these things for a while. theres a 7% drop rate (or should it be skin rate?) Ive sold them from 15-30g each. They sometime take a while to sell but imo are the best thing to farm if you're a skinner.

I've found that the best place to farm these is in Shadowmoon Valley. Up at the very top of the map on the opposite side of the mountains. The stretch there from the west to the east have Shadow Serpents that drop them. I was there for less than an hour and found four. I don't know; maybe I'm just lucky.

I got 6 of these in about an hour, so I can confirm that they are indeed skinned from the Coilskar Cobras in Shadowmoon Valley. As a druid I was able to stealth into the cave and kill mostly just the cobras, so that likely improved my odds.

You dont need a flying mount to get to Twilight Ridge. Just go through the tunnel. You'll see the tunnell marked as 2 caves, on your map.

I was determined to set out and find them.
I was hoping WoWreader would update this automatically, but I guess not...
I found the snakes littering the hills to the West of Nagrand, up above Camp Fear. I think the only way up there is to fly.

Enjoy, skinners and leatherworkers. Much easier to get now. Watch out for the stealth-detecting hounds and the stupid scaredy-cat Sparrow Hawks.

Cobra Scales only drop in one zone in the entire world, but having to deal with PvP server crap... I wish I had picked up Mining instead. Anyways, on Frostmane Cobra Scales are on the AH for 50g per 2.

Not to mention I just skinned a level 71 named mob Tyrantus (46,9 in Netherstorm)and guess what dropped? One leather scrap. Best profession ever.

I am a 375 LW/375 Skinning - Stormscale EU

This is without doubt the most QQ mat for LWers in the game, even more so than Primal Nethers.

They are only farmable by skinners in the Coliskar Cistern in the north of Shadowmoon. There are 4 mobs outside, and another 14 or so inside the cave.

The drop rate (according to my mobinfo) is ~15%, and I have skinned enough of them to have a fairly accurate count :P

In short, it is total QQ, and a real pain in the ass to farm :P They are required for the leg enchants that all dpsers want (ap/crit, 4 scales for the baby one, and 8 scales for the grown up one). Also for the Pimpin Hats (high agi/stam) which most Leather users want (both feral and rogues). The Cobrascale Epic BoE Patterns (10 for Hood and 8 for Gloves).

Basically there is a lot of reason for people to want these, and it is very hard to get them in sufficient quantity.

And for those on Stormscale, yes I can craft all of the above :P

These are fairly easy to farm if you're level 70, and especially if you're a druid.

Start around 50,24. There are two sets of two cobras there.

Fly to Coilscar point - On the highest tier, there will be two sets of cobras near each other. Be careful of the naga pat near the cobras on the lower level.

Fly a bit south west from there. There is another set of two under a small roof.

Fly back north a bit, along the wall. Near a water elemental, there's another set of two.

Fly back to around 50,24, and respawns should be up or close to up.

Granted, the droprate is low, but there is a well-defined circuit, moderately quick respawns, and you can complete the entire farming circuit without pulling a single naga if you're careful. It's easier for druids that can immediately fly from point to point, but I can see any class doing this.

Not sure what my personal droprate is, but after 3 days of light farming at about 1 hour a day, I've pocketed maybe 10+ scales. Factored into my leatherworking of creating the cobrascale leg armors, this translates into about a 50g profit per scale on my server.

If you go to Nagrand, in the area to the west of the forge camps (20,35 ish) The snakes drop them fairly regularly. There are a ton of birds, but they flee instead of fighting so all you have to worry about is the one yellow snake you attack. I farmed 6 in about 35 minutes total. You have to have skinning though.

But these mobs around are bouth humanoids and beast, and they can only be dropped from beast by skinning

I don't mind a little farming in a comfortable area and pretty much most areas are relatively comfortable for my 70 Hunter on a non-PvP server, but what a bunch of trash mobs those naga are!

In 14 cobra kills, I have 2 scales, which is acceptable (although that might not continue...) but of course I can't stealth around, so I have to kill a bunch of the naga as well. A bunch of cheap, overgrown murlocs. I must have killed 30 or so and not a single thing of value has dropped, unless you count cornering the fish oil market. My shaman asked me to stop sending her these things; she has a supply that will last her to level 120.

Did I forget the coilskar chests? Gosh, what a treat! I've opened 6 so far and...yup, more fish oil. I'm going to need a bath in Chanel just to get rid of the smell.

Update: Good news and bad news. Bad news: 10 more cobras, 0 scales. Good news: 1 Jaggal Pearl. Hmmm. Maybe I should give Nagrand a try? Haven't had a drink with Durn in ages.

WHERE TO FIND THE MOBS THAT DROP COBRA SCALES EASILY:

1: Have a flying mount.

2: Go to Shadowmoon Valley.

3: Fly to the very northern edge of the zone. Start around the middle of the map, East of the forge camp where you do the quest that involves controlling a Fel Reaver.

4: Start patrolling eastwards. You'll fly over several ridges close to the dropoff where scorpions, Air elementals etc are.

5: Stop every time you see a shadow serpent. Kill and skin. repeat.

6: Put your cobra scales up for sale in AH singly or in pairs for at least 10-15g each skin, depending on existing prices.

7: Laugh at those who abandoned skinning because they couldn't make any money out of it.

So I dont know if it was just coincidince or what but I farmed for about an hour for these and the twilight serpent at 13, 35 nagrand was the only one in the area that droped it for me and I think I killed him 10 times (seemed to be about 5 min respawn) and he droped the cobra scale 6 out of those ten times all the other snakes in the area didnt drop it once for me...so try it out if you fly up on the side that doesnt have the village of unfriendlys and go through the cave to the other side he is the first snake on the trail..... 13,35 nagrand

The skinning rate for these is hit or miss in either spot, but for those brave enough to enter the cave there are about 10-16 more snakes inside the cave (in pairs of course). I have yet to try and skin them as I was in there for a few deposits. Just a heads up for those looking to get the scales of them :)

on wildhammer these were selling for 20g each a month ago, only me and 2 others selling them. now there are 10+ people farming them and there selling for 10g each. SMV is terrible to farm them, about 12 are up at one time, and there are lots and lots of adds. nagrand is easily much better seeing as how there are just as many up at once and no adds on the bird side. ive killed 700 cobras in SMV and 1000 in nagrand and the drop rate is the same, like others have said its about patience.

First of all The cave is very easy to solo

I'm a 70 hunter Beast spec and I have no problem taking on 3-4 of these guys solo. It's rare that I have to fight more then 2 at a time. so don't fear the cave..

As for results

1st pass I killed the 8 outside and cleared the entire cave (NOT 1 drop) Although the escort inside paid like 22 gold so that was worth the trip..

Came out and sold (just above the cave entrance is a gent that buys and fixes armor BTW) he also sells ammo and I'm pretty sure food and drink. making this run very nice!

The 2nd pass (I killed 2 outside pairs) the other 2 were already dead then hit the cave. I took 2 scales on that run.

3rd pass I did the same (killed 4 pair ourside though) and cleared the cave and walked out with 2 more. so in about 1 1/2 hrs I took home 4 scales. I'll be going back in a few hrs when work world is over and wow life starts.. I'm hoping to see better results as many of the people posting before me seem to be getting nice drops. but you know what If I get 2 drops per run I'll be happy! The cobra armor will sell for a ton because it's rare. and I now know I can farm them for decent gold should I need too. Right now they are selling for about 25 gold a scale on my server. It's about time being a LW pays out! although I've done well with Bags of Many hides as well.

Did a test run with a moderately geared 70 moonkin (self-buff to 871 +spell damage + talents). Got 7 scales in about 70 minutes from Coilscar area, in and out of the cave. Flying, stealth, treants, hibernate, etc. all make dealing with the snakes and the whole area pretty easy. Got about 250g worth of leather in just over an hour without ever being in any real danger... I'd call that quick and easy cash. Each cobra scale is worth about as much as a primal fire or air on my server, with little or no competition. Non-skinners questing there even left me dead cobras to skin. Looks like a good way to farm epic flight money for that alt. The naga's are pretty manageable, at least for a balance druid with ranged spells, healing, armor, etc. Elemental shammy or ret pally would probably find them easy marks too, although I'm thinking few of those classes are skinners. Stealth is convenient, but sometimes it's just easier to blow away a naga or two than to creep around them.
Do naga's drink that fish oil, or use it as a cosmetic product? Keep their scales from squeaking? Get better mileage on their chariots? Drive away mosquitos? Grease-skate on smooth rocks? It must be good stuff, whatever they use it for, as the level 70 nagas use the same fish oil as the level 17's :) Happy hunting!

I was seriously going to give up skinning until I incidentally discovered just how easy these things are to farm (while farming mats for nethercobra leg armor). I usually farm entirely inside of Coilskar Cistern (inside the cave), with a set circuit which involves killing 6 pairs (12 total) coilskar cobras. The entire loop takes about 10-ish minutes, and on average I get about 1 cobra scale a loop. Sometimes you can get very lucky and get a few in the space of 10 minutes (I once got 3 in 3 pairs), and they sell fairly well.

On my server they typically go for about 25g each, so I typically bundle up 2 or 4 and sell for 45 or 90g. Considering how little effort this takes at 70, and how much more money you get from all of the knothide scraps, knothide leather, random greens/whites/greys, and so on, this is about as painless a way to farm money as I can imagine.

(Of course, you can always go a step further and farm primal airs to make leg armor kits for bigger sales too. I've found farming primal airs to be way more frustrating than just the scales, so I stick to just farming the scales.)

K. I didn't post this, cause I didn't want to "share". But maybe my selflessness will bring good karma.

Soooo... At lvl 70 there are two dailies that are give in Shatt by the gryphon master. One is to take multi-phase reading in in Nagrand, and the other is to collect nether dust from skinning.

So get those two quests and fly to nagrand. Fly to Oshu'gun and take your readings. In the process, kill clefthoof bulls and aged clefthooves to collect cleft hoof hide. You'll get about 2 of the 8 nether dusts you need.

Mount up and head to Twilight Ridge area around 20,35. Farm twilight serpents to collect the other 6 nether dust, and you'll get 3-5 cobra scales in the process.

Buy the primal airs and primal nethers to craft the nethercobra leg armor and you should be making a couple hundred gold per day off this 30 minutes of work.

I farm these daily. Most days i go to Nagrand and farm the Twilight Serpents, grouping this farming with the daily Nether dust quest. Usually get 3-5 scales a day in about 30-45mins.

I actually do a daily route in Nagrand.
I skin the Serpents first, then do the multiphase readings.
After that i will fly back to the area just south of Garadar and do a fly by to see if anyone is doing the Mastery quest.
About once every 5-6 days someone is on this quest and isnt a skinner themselfs. If you get lucky enough for this i always help them out(not in a group, just hit second)and skin the Clefthoof bulls. Great way to farm the Clefthoof leather. If noone is doing the quest i will do one pass all the way around Garadar, starting at the north end near the lake and making my way south and then east. One full pass will usually get me anywhere from 4-12 thick clefthoof leather. After this i mount up and fly to Elemental plateau and do about 2 clearings of the Air elemental and fire elementals. Will generally get at least 1-2 primal air and 5-15motes of fire. If its busy up there and there competition i just skip it and come back some other time.

I try to do this routine everyday i play. Takes me about an hour or so to finish it(at lvl70 well geared).

Im on a low pop server and currently the cobra scales are selling for 40-50g PER SCALE. (sold 8 today alone 45g first 4 50g second 4, there were none in the AH) Dont know how long the price will stay this high but there are never any in AH and if someone wants the Nethercobra leg enchant or other items these are used for they sell almost as soon as they go into the AH. The Thick Clefthoof is going for about 70-80g a stack right now. But i usually break it into 8stacks or 16stacks. Most people buy these for the leg enchants. The primals i keep for myself cause i always seem to need them for something.

Anyways hopes this helps. Great way to make gold without spending hours a day farming one thing at a time.

On a side note, i have farmed Shadowmoon vally several times as well and the drop rate seems to be very close to the same. Only reason i go to Nagrand is because there are no other Mobs around the serpents to kill and there is Never anyone else there farming. One month now and ive never seen anyone there. Plus you make an extra 25g from the 2 quests so why not group it all together.

It may seem very strange but i am having a 10% droprate on these. From 70 kills i got 7 scales, which in my opinion is very nice (they sell for 50g on my realm). So be sure to go grind at the Coilskar cistern.

i went and farmed some of these for my druids' nethercobra leg thing , had to use my only skinning toon a lvl 66 hunter, took a while only needed 4 and wasnt paying 50g each but was kinda easy if i was on my druid he would have 3-4 shotted them and would have been cake, but none the less when i bother getting my hunter to 70 will be an easy farm

i farmed at the cave in SMV for about 45 min. i ended up with 8 scales. i thought that was pretty good...the time before i ended up with 0 scales in the same amount of time...i guess its just luck sometimes.

Farmed Twilight ridge 30 serpents kills 0 cobra scales
went to smv inside colisker cistern finally on my 14th kill I get 1 cobra scale. lets see 1 divided by 34 oh 3.4% dropp rate. I know other must be doing better than this at this rate these scales would go for 100g.

Hmmm, I farmed for about an hour and got 6 cobra scales - which is nice 'cause they go for 28g each if I'm not crafting the cobra armor.

I was farming these in SMV in the Cistern cave and found 5 in 20 minutes. Not too bad considering the low drop rate....nethercobra leg armor here I come! :D

Farmed 5 in about half an hour in the cave. Pretty easy for a rogue to sneak from group to group. They also respawn pretty fast.

twilight ridge in nagrand was an excellent spot to farm theses. after about an hour and a half of grinding, i ended up with:
10 cobra scales
63 knothide leather
129 knothide scraps
17 adamantite ores
16 motes of earth
8 eternium ore
5 khorium ore
1 deep peridot
1 shadow draenite
1 lvl 66 green item

definitely worth the hour and a half.
