For most mages killing Ragnaros while still wearing their Arcane thingamajigger, this becomes a ridiculously massive upgrade. This is definitely one of those items that you hoard all of your DKP for just so you can have it ASAP. This beats out pretty much...all of the mage loot in MC in my opinion. I would value this over ToeP and Golemagg's weapon drops, as you should already be using a Verimonde's and AV book before you even set foot in the instance.

The Jewel of Kajaro (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=19601 | ZG Exalted Neck) isn't really as good as the choker. Its around 20 less damage, A bit more int, and some spirit. It all depends on if it gives you part of your ZG set, or also if you find the 28 second cooldown counterspell desirable.

This is a great Caster DPS neck. While it is light on stats, the obscene amount of spell damage on a neck piece makes up for it. The only things close to it are your exalted neck pieces (they have around 20 less spell damage though) or the Ossirian Head Necklacke (Which has 10 less spall damage but more stats).

In my opinion Tier 1 and 2 in general are have enough stats and not enough spell damage that easily makes up for the lack of stats on this neck piece.

The best neck for dps casters all the way through MC and BWL. The amount of spelldmg makes it much better than any other options, including the ZG rep necklace and the one off of Ossirian.

It's funny to see how people say +spell dmg is crap and then become all "OMG I WANT THIS!" when they see stuff that adds like 1% crit.

1% crit means that on average you'll need, e.g., 100 fireballs to get a crit for like 500 more dmg? 700? Let's say 700 ( including Ignite ). 700 over 100 shots is like +7 dmg per shot.

So yes, +34 dmg per shot is crap :D uauaua

This item is by far the best amulet ingame.
You will never find any amu with +33spelldmg, and this one even has stats on it too. Absolutly divine.

Wow, our guild uses pre-set dkp costs for items, and this one was WAAAY underpriced! It was only 6dkp (compared to Choker of Enlightenment being 8dkp)

A Druid who had the same amount of dkp as me (a Warlock) rolled on it as well, and won the roll. I whispered him and begged him to let me have it...and he passed it to me! He said he only rolled because it was so cheap, but he knew I would use it a lot more.

Face it - there is no other neckitem in the game which adds more to spelldamage.

Damagecasters who reach Ragnaros, do not really need more stamina or intelligence. It is nearly impossible to avoid getting enough of those stats with almost any equipment that drops for them in zul gurub or mc.

Absolutely nothing is as precious as spelldamage on items at that point of the game.

And to the peeps who argue this is useful for healers: It is. But Blizzard considers healing on items less valuable than damage. You may have noticed that there are blue items with far more + healing than + damage/healing than any epic in the game. As a result, there ARE other neckitems with very decent stats and +healing out there.

im tired of everyone arguing exactly who an item is for. ...as long as noone is greedy and rude, and stays open-minded it'll get worked out by the raid leader. If not, then bye bye, you probably wont get asked back. Ok so...the main point here is that people are posting this ALOT on thott: 'pallys/shammys are all only cleanse/heal bots, blah blah blah' Thats true....but ONLY in the higher end instances is it true! Does that mean that a certain class can only EVER own gear that helps them in one certain situation? no. absoluetly not. There IS an expected expansion pack coming where we will all be asked to do other things once again besides get ubergeared from ZG/MC/BWL/AQ...etc...there is also PVP. C'mon people stop over-generalizing and making it seem that what one class does in MC is the only buttons/commands they will EVER use again. please... and no, im not saying this so that i can roll on another classes gear...ive never done that, and i never will. im more thoughtful than that, and i respect my great guildmates.

Are you suggesting that the choker should go to those who can "use all the stats" over a mage or lock? Please explain.

You know, of course, that mages and locks generally value +dmg items like this one over ANY other attribute.

I'm not saying it should go only to mages and locks, but they are actually the ones who'll gain the most benefit from it. It's already been stated that there are better +healing ammy's out there.

Ok, I think first and foremost it should be a lock / mage item. Im a lock, im prejudiced.

I can also see that it would be a very good caster necklace for any other class. A priest will get use out of the +healing for when he is in raids, and when he gets done raiding for a month and decides to melt face shadow style, Boo yah! Same goes for Shams and Druids. Pallys get a little less out of the +damage for lack of amount of damaging spells. It is still excellent for them.

However, I believe first and foremost it should go to mages and locks because they will probably get the most bang for their buck, and any guild that is currently trying to learn BWL or AQ40 should get the most efficiency for their items, as it will help the guild down more bosses and in general do better.

As A person who plays a Druid and a Mage i can clearly say, this item would be put to better use for a mage/lock. I would not bid DKP on it for my druid, and i would look harsly upon any healer that did so. There are items with better regen/+healing which are for healers.

First of all this is 1 of the best spell damage necklaces in game that benefit warlock/mage the most and all the other good ones are VERY hard to get.
Lower level +healing items can be more effective at healing and they are much easier to get:

From stratholme:?i=37252

From Duke in silithus: (Lord Skowl) ?i=52236

From Zul'Grub, Jindo the hexxer: ?i=51263

From AQ20 end boss: (if you loot the head) ?i=52741

MC can be only farmed ONCE per week for lets say 30-40 man. (depending how many u need for rag kill). Even then choker of the firelord rarely drop. maybe on average 1/5 kills of ragna.

However stratholme can be done infinitely and dukes can be farmed quite often, its not so hard to get the mats. AQ20 and ZG can be done 3 times a week per 20 man, so there is total of 12 chances to drop the respective pendants per week for 40 people (if those raids kill jindo and ossirian that is)

Conclusion: all healing classes should maybe think twice before getting this necklace over mage/warlock as they won't get as huge advantage from this neck as locks and mages do.

mage lock prio. healer type classes can use it, but theres better +healing, which is NOT hard to attain. it pisses me off so much, when we first killed rag it was mage lock prio for a while now any1 can roll on it. GG. ive seen priests loot this and they never use it, always the aq20 necklace, better healing obviously. so GG guild leader IMO. same will happen with shadow flame staff, i guarantee it. theres a goddam 1hand mace that has just as much healing for a reason.

There are really only 4 "end-game" necks in the game for offensive casters. I'll list them in order of how easy they to get:

1) Charm of the Shifting Sands

100% drop (Head) from Ossirian
9 stam 12 int 25 dmg

Of the four necks listed, this is the most stat heavy, and consequently has the lowest expected damage output. Great for all classes with a mana bar except hunters.

2) Choker of the Fire Lord
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=37852/colossal-skull-clad-cleaver
10-15% drop from Ragnaros
7 stam 7 int 34 dmg

This is this the most spell damage heavy of the four necks, consequently having low stats and no crit. If spell damage is the name of your game, this is the neckpiece for you. Best dps neck in the game for non-Ruin locks and Shadow priests. Near the top for frost mages too.

3) Amulet of Vek'nilash

5-10% drop from Twin Emperors
9 stam 5 int 27 dmg 1% crit

Ideal for fire mages and Ruin-speced locks, this is one beast of a neckpiece. A light shifting of stats from CotFL towards stam, and adding the crit at the cost of spell damage makes this also the better PvP caster neck. Expect your Fire Mages to go nuts if this drops. For all intents and purposes though, this is a sidegrade from CotFL, but a pretty good upgrade from CotSS.

4) Gem of Trapped Innocents

40-50% drop from Kel'thuzad
9 stam 7 int 15 dmg 2% crit

Now I'm always one to value crit very high, being a fire mage myself. But this level NINETY-TWO piece of loot reeks of sidegrade material. Gaining 2 int and 1% crit at the cost of 12 dmg is only something someone without Vek'nilash's Amulet would do, and that's ilvl 81 loot. CotFF, ilvl 78, gains 2 stam and 2% crit, losing 19 dmg, so its a slight upgrade there.

Basically the only offensive class that should and would take this would be a fire mage. Other than that I can see this going to healers (shaman, paladins, priests, druids) over other classes.

Moral of the story: CotFL is VERY good for the ilvl it is presented to the players. Get this and you don't need to worry about upgrades from Twin Emps or Kel'thuzad for a very long time. However, if your guild is killing those bosses, and you are a fire mage or Ruin lock, you may want to wait it out.

Any priest that that tries to take this over a consistant mage/lock raider is a moron and such things will keep that guild out of Naxx because the raid will not have the dps.

I wet myself thinking about that.

I wish it added some fire resistance though, then I could at least justify wearing that in PVE outside of DM.

P.S. To all of you who haven't figured it out, DM mobs have zero/low fire resistance. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them have negative fire resistance. But yeah, outside of DM, fire mages are near useless.

Also, to whoever said scorch and fireblast are the primary firemage spells, while that's true, I know my pyroblast plays a huge part in pvp. +39 damage, do a fire crit with that and we're talking over +80 damage. Hey, wait, staff of elements + choker + eye of flames. Throw in spell power, and we're now talking about seeing 400-500 range fire crits in extra damage. Get a nice combination of +crit and +fire, and its all worth it.

As far as the sacrifice in mana goes, I don't know about you horde, but I never have mana problems unless I am doing heavy AoE.

Add this with essence of pure flame on top of having thorns on with a druid.

Not just for mages if this increases the effect of the essence of pure flame dmg.

If so, any druid would GLADLY roll on this.

Thorns+essence of pure flame+choker= GG to any warrior/rogue attacking me in bear form.

I just got this for my lock, first rag kill for this guild im with... It was nice to get, though the T2 pants dropped too sigh... couldn't afford those :(

confirmed response from fangtooth, was re the pally ret aura not benefiting from the judgement of the crusader which increases holy dmg done by upto 140 and ret aura is holy dmg, dmg shields like ret aura and thors DO NOT benefit from +dmg effects

Considering that the +Fire damage is only going to apply in full to Fireball/Pyroblast anyhow... completely worthless, especially compared to several much easier to acquire items.

I am one. +Fire DMG is not that great; for PvE it's still useless because all the big raid bosses are highly resistant to fire. For PvP it's a little nicer, but it doesn't have a very much effect on Scorch and it has almost no effect on Fire Blast (the two main spells any self-respecting Fire Mage uses in PvP).

For a drop off of RAGNAROS this is disgraceful. It should be +39 dmg to ALL spell schools, +16 int, +16 stamina. Then it would be good.

This necklace is good for both casters and healers.

However, casters should take priority on these.

The reason is because for casters this is a HUGE upgrade.

But for healers, this is a really small upgrade: they should already be using Animated Chain Necklace, and this is literally only +1 healing better.
