This is still an interesting item after the expansion, maybe even more so now. Dark Iron Ore is quite cheap to have now, as people rather make gear from Fel Iron.

If you are ready to get the smelting skill for Dark Iron (in Blackrock Depths), you can bring along plenty of Dark Iron Ore and the rest of the parts needed to make this rifle during a BRD run.

I have found that I can sell them for a nice profit. If you get them at level 50 it's a very good weapon -- that explains why people are ready to pay quite a high price for it.

Something I feel is overlooked here...

The Shadow Shot procs. Often. It's like an unwritten boost to your dps in shadow damage. I think this is a fantastic upgrade for most ranged attackers.

An incredible gun, best option on lvl 50! The shadow bolts can increase many of your DPS! try it!
I paid about 200g on AH and it worths it!

Being a gnome engineer i do it for the love of crafting, plain and simple. I dony care how much it costs to make the item or the rarity of the mats.

Crafting adds spice,i craft for free if i have the recipe and you have the mats.
Live the Adventure of the game
Dont degrade it into a Farming excercise :(

I bought all the mats. I was happy when i finally could craft it. I went to IF and clicked create. Suddenly "requires black anvil" appears on my screen. :/

This is a nice gun but entails great expense and a lot of trouble to make. Usually my engineer toon can head to any nearby anvil & forge and make whatever. But not dark iron stuff. Oh no.

Assume for the moment that you collect the tough mats (48 dark iron ore if the engineer can smelt it or the bars themselves if he can�t. Oh, and the gems). A patient and dedicated miner can get these mats but everyone else is off to the AH where the stuff MIGHT be available if your lucky. Well heeled toons only, please.

Now you need to find an engineer willing to do the work. He must battle into BRD to reach the forge. For this he needs a group if he isn�t a stealthy type. Forming the group and running the instance is very time consuming since at least half of BRD must be cleared. If smelting must occur, most of the instance must be run. The last time I smelted ore we took over 2 hours to do it. Anyone in his right mind would want a lot of money for this work.

As with many crafted objects in WoW, this one should be better than it is in order to command the cash that it is worth regarding mats and time. On the other hand, this may be another one of Blizzards ways to restrict certain gear to endgame raid guilds since usually dark iron is hoarded in guild banks.

I believe it takes Mining 230 (smelt Dark Iron).

I bought this in BB AH for a buyout of 6G, just for the sake of having a complete list of craftable items.

** Don't bother trying to craft this item at low lvl!

Your looking at about 40G for AH Mats just to learn the skill. Then you have to get a group together that can make it thru the bar (there is a trick to that too, get the dwarf drunk) and to the 7 dwarves just to "bribe" the guy to teach you the Smelt Dark Iron ability. Then fight your way through more Fire Elementals to get to the Smelting Point. (8 ore= 1 bar).. Hearth out, fly back, run back & start over at the gate or voluntarily commit suicide (repair bill) and start over at the entrance to go down the Dark Iron Highway to get to the Dark Anvil, beat down all the fire elemental guards and Lord Incendius... Just to get to the Dark Anvil to craft the item.

once you learn the Smelting skill there is a Shortcut video out there that will save you tons of time.

I didn't even try crafting 1 of these until I was LvL 62. I had enough hit points to absorb damage from the required mobs and I was high enough that I didn't pull aggro from all the mobs. (+ a fire resistance potion, couple heals potions & 1 Invisible potion).

Now I can run in, snake around the mobs on the Highway, Kill the last 2 Fire Elemental guards at the end of the hall, Take out Lord Incendius, craft the guns and then hearth out. From the flight from IF and back ~25 minutes. (Careful with Incendius, he has a knockback AoE that knocks you back about 15-25yds, stay in line with the bridge so that you have something to land on when he knocks you back, found this out the Hot & squishy lava way).

I don't even bother with this difficult effort unless I'm crafting at least 5 of them at a time. Other times I just stockpile mats when AH prices are low.

For all the work that is required, I haven't been able to sell them for more than about 50G. Once you factor in Mats, effort and time, I'm only making about 5G profit. That's why I wait until I got mats for 5 of them!

If Blizz nerfed this to a LvL 49 Gun and added other Stat buffs (Stam/Agi/AP) we could easily get 80G for it and definately make it worth our painful efforts. But then again, nothing in Engineering skill is easy :D

Just made this rifle for my hunter...we cleared the area where the anvil is and I was able to use it to make the gun. There is no cool down...I made two of them one right after the other. You do NOT need to know Dark Iron Smelting to use the Dark Anvil. Just make sure you have all the mats and your tools (arclight spanner, etc) with you :P

It was a pain to make but it does great damage even with stock lvl40 ammo. and procs continuously for me.

Additionally, it can/will proc off your normal and skillshots. And the proc damage can crit as well.

I would like to see the general dps and/or proc damage on it boosted a bit considering how much of a pain it is to craft and the mats involved. But I have had no real complaints the way it currently performs. This gun is wasted on anyone other than a hunter. If you see a war or rogue using this, just plain smack them.

You can sell mats for way more than you can sell the gun for. I have not even sold it yet. I may have to lose money on it. 6 DI bars go for 60g on our server. I would rather sell my bars than make this gun.

You can make great money off these plans, I've benefited so much. I find blue sapphires quite often, even off mobs, and large opals cost nothing. 36 dark iron ore is a bit tough but its not that bad if you do brd or mc every now and again. I sell for 50-70 g, big profit Imo.

hehe, the Ore's isn't that much of a problem, since I've found my way to "farm" then solo, just to bad u can't reset the Instance that offen, only like 5-6 times per hour or something maybe longer

I've only spend like 3g on buying the crappy Leather and Mithril for the Deadly Scope since I was lazy.. so I'll make some good Profit on it

This is a sad waste of a craft. I'd much rather use my, FREE, keepers aim, same dmg only 1 dps lower.

Why in the world would anyone actualy make this thing? Hunters get free bow just as good, and anyone else would want STATS, meaning lvl40 green with 1agi is better.

I could make it anyway, but with raid zones right around the corner with even more free and better weapons, no thanks.

They need to either buff this thing up and add more dps/dmg/stats, or cut regeant costs in half, because it simply isn't worth the costs.

I spent months getting the dark iron, and it wouldnt let me create it because it requires a black anvil. where is that?
