These books spawn in Dalaran. Apparently there are a number of locations in the city where a book can spawn - either one of the books for this Achievement, or a random flavor book. Their spawntime is not known yet, but they last until someone reads it. When read, they disappear in a few minutes.

Known locations of book spawns:
-The Ledgermain Lounge (Inn in center of Dalaran) - 2 empty book shelves on first floor can contain a book, empty book shelve upstairs in the room with 4 beds, and on the floor of the room with one bed.
-The Violet Gate (room containing the crystal to port to the ground) - on the floor next to one of the bookcases.
-The Violet Hold - on the crates next to the NPC giving the daily regular dungeon quest.
-Dalaran Visitor Center (Tabard/Guild building, center of Dalaran) - on the floor between the two bookshelves
-The Violet Citadel - on/near bookshelves on the top and bottom level.

So far, I've found 5 books.

Abjuration: Spawns in the room with the Teleportation Crystal down to Violet Stand on the floor next to a bookshelf. Shares a spawn with The Worst Mage in Dalaran.

Necromancy: Spawns on top floor of Ledgermain Lodge, in the room with an empty bookshelf.

Conjuration: Spawns in the Violet Citadel, on the floor between two bookshelves across from Rhonin's gang.

Divination: Also spawns in Violet Citadel, near the port to Caverns of Time

Transmutation: Spawns on the 1st floor of Ledgermain Lodge, on the northern side of the room, I think

I've a theory that each books shares a spawn with another book, not related to the achievement, as in the case with the Abjuration book. While these books arent helpful with the achievement, they generally are very funny reads. My favorite so far is the Portals are NOT Garbage Bins, found on the top floor of the building where you can buy emblem cloth gear, on the balcony.

Still havent figured out what or how long the spawn times are.

Have found the locations of both Enchantment and Illusion.

Enchantment: Spawns on the 2nd story balcony of the store Threads of Fate.

Illusion: Spawns on a box next to the normal dungeon daily quest giver by Violet Hold. Spawns with a funny childrens book :D

Still have not found the location for Introduction. If anyone on Northrend has found this book, I will pay handsomely for its location

The books despawn exactly 3 minutes after someone reads them (That's when you right click and open it, not when you've read it start to finish).
I attempted to time how long a book took to respawn, but it was over 30 minutes and I did not have the time. Either each spawn location is on its own individual spawn timer and it's a very very long one, or the timer is shared between all locations.

I am up to 7/8 as well with the missing of Introduction, would srsly pay someone a ludicrous amount of money for the location of the last book ~_~

Doesn't look like the book has even popped up for ANYONE yet...and if it has...better stop hiding!

Just a note I don't know if it worth it. But there is a book of orcish language on the second floor of hero's welcome. in the bedroom on the empty bookshelf. It might be one of the random books you get for the school of magic books. I'm thinking it just might be introduction one. Keep an eye out for it. Let me know if it is on Northrend, Bombeecakez.

Also noticed that the timer might be relatively short. Just a lot of people going around looking for em being the problem that no one can find em. Deserted Dalaran ftw!

just found Introduction in this new build(9095)
it spawn by the Teleportation Crystal (56.7, 45.6), where Abjuration used to be. Abjuration spawn at Dalaran Visitor Center now (52.3, 54.8).
after complete "Higher Learning' I get the reward from mailbox, sent by Rhonin.
The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery
Use: Teleports the caster to the spires atop the Violet Citadel. This spell only work in the City of Dalaran.
"Contains the secrets of higher learning.'

after used the book I got teleport to a room called 'Archmage Vargoth's Retreat', After talked to Archmage Vargoth there he gave me 'Kirin Tor Familiar', teachs how to summon a small non-combat arcane pet!

This achievement rewards a pet! Once you have completed the achievement, you can visit Archmage Vargoth atop the Violet Citadel, where you get your "Kirin Tor Familiar" which looks like a blue/purple arcane elemental. It's similar to the Scorchling pet that could drop off of the Fire Festival boss, but much bigger. It stands about chest high to a human.

This is an achievement that requires you to locate multiple books in Dalaran. The book names are named after spell schools in D&D and other games. Once finished, mails you a book in the mail that teleports you. https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=43824

Upon using the book, you are able to obtain a new non-combat pet. It appears similar to the Warlock pet Voidwalker, but blue-purple. The same model of the Arcane Anomoly in Karazhan. https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=44738

The book locations are here. Please note either the book will spawn, or an alternative non-achievement book. After reading either of the books, they will despawn. Thus if you get the non-achievement one, you would need to wait for the other one to appear.

I decided to check into the whole three hour timer I found on a beta forum post. I managed to get a full clear of the books after a server reset this morning at 9:50 AM (and not one of them was a higher learning one).

Waited for a respawn on the first book I picked up. It re-appeared not at 12:50 PM but at 1:04 PM. Since then I've been running circles to see when the books appear. They all don't spawn at once and not in the order they were originally despawned. For example, this run through only Thread's Fate, the top room in the inn, and the teleport building had books.

So far two circles throughout the city and not one of the higher learning has spawned. If the 3 minute to despawn timer is correct and I do these laps within 1 minute of each other, there's no possible way I am missing a book.

Hope this information is useful for someone. Trying to get this achievement done before Dalaran is swarmed.

Looks like they spawn around 3 hours after they have been read, but they share the place with another book, which means at each location there are 2 books which spawn randomly every 3 hours from being read. This means you can be unlucky that the none Schools of Arcane Magic book spawns 2 times in a row or more.

I found 4 books today, and the way I did it, was to go to all the locations read the books (if there where any) head out and lvl some more, and then return everytime my heartstone was ready again. did this for 10 hours.

I'd like to mention that in my experience, the books are not on a strict 3-hour timer. I've seen some spawn after 3 hours, some after 4 hours, and some anywhere between those two limits. I'm now fairly convinced that the book spawn randomly 3 to 4 hours after they've been read. I'll try to confirm this.

Is the spawn rate really 3 hours (about)? I found a fake book, read it, noted the time, and returned 2.50 hours later and sat. Nothing spawned. So what's the deal?

All I've found so far is one book that isn't part of the achievement. I've been checking the locations and seen nothing. So either someone is beating me to them, or there's more to it, like needing to be a certain level or at a certain rep level. Anyone know?

There's no requirement. Just think of it like this. Other people are trying to read the books, and one book will not stay spawned long before being read. If we assume it will stay there 5 minutes before despawning, you're looking for a book that is there for 5 minutes every 3 or 4 hours. Don't be surprised if you don't find it right away.

I'm only missing Introduction. 5 or 6 times so far when I caught it up, it's been the wrong book. Due to its location, it's probably the hardest book to get.

Perhaps it's just the way random works but I noticed something. I've never seen a book spawn before my eyes. I've waited past the 3hr mark. 5 times the instant I left the area and ran around Dalaran, when I came back the book was there.

Also, it's my opinion that VC1, 2, and 3 are linked. Twice I read VC2 and waited for it to respawn and on its 3hr+ mark, found VC3 up instead.

Okay I've tried this all day. It's not a three hour cool-down; It's random - sometimes 1 1/2 hrs sometimes 3 hrs.. sometimes .. who knows? It gave me a headache BUT I got 4 of the Arcane Magic books! I submitted a screen-shot of map with all the spawn locations. Hopefully they'll add it. (along with the my key notes ;) )

So far I've seen most of the spawn points in this thread, so keep looking. And good luck!

Okay, I just got this achievement. I got it over 4 days, and spent about 10-12 hours total on it.

I have to agree with the above poster that the books spawn randomly 3-4 hours after they've been read. Once I read a book (a non-achievement book), I'd mark down the time and go out and quest. I'd come back a bit before 3 hours had passed and run around in a circle, hitting all the spawn points for an hour waiting for it to respawn. When I found another book in a different spawn point, I'd mark down the time. Then the cycle would start again. Every single time (every time) a book spawned 3-4 hours after I had read it. This didn't fail me once.

This method is nice because you can quest in the 3 hours you're waiting, so you don't waste that much time on the achievement. It also gets easier the more achievement books you find, because you don't have to hit as many spawn points when you're running around in your little circle. And you can get really lucky. I've found two achievement books within an hour of each other. I think for me it was 2 books the first day, 2 books the second, 3 books the third, and one book today. Also, most of the books reset after a server restart so the best time to do this is right after the server comes up. You can run around and find a bunch of books at once and mark down the times, and then you'll know that they will all spawn 3-4 hours later.

I've definitely seen more than 2 books up at once, and I just don't think that despawning a book in one location will trigger a new spawn in a different location. That hasn't been my experience. Anyway, any questions feel free to ask.

I've camped two books four times thus far. I've seen:
- Exactly 3 hours
- 4 hours 11 minutes
- "Over 5 hours" (Camped for five, never spawned)
- 4 1/2 hours~

The first in the portal building, the other three in the Visitor's Centre. So the spawns at least at that location aren't "between 3-4 hours" as even one 4+ hour respawn shows.

Also two of my friends are also waiting on the Visitor's Centre book so it does make me wonder if it is rarer than things like the introduction which almost everyone has. Although the sample of three people is too small to be meaningful.

Waiting on last book to spawn, have all of them except Conjuration. The spawn rate deffinently isnt 3 hours on the dot, Im waiting at the spawn point now and its benn 3 hrs 25 mins. Hopefully I wont have to wait to terribly much longer. I cant wait to get the cute little guy :)

The vanity pet reward is an arcane elemental in a big size. A little bigger than a gnome I guess. The animation of the Kirin Tor Familar(that you get by using the reward of the achievment, and talking with Vagoth) is just standard elemental(fire elemental, you know ;)). it have an idle effect that makes 4 arcane explosions in a row, with sound.

Books have a randomized set timer.

After reading the book, they will go on either a;

3 hour
3.5 hour
4 hour
4.5 hour
5 hour

timer, randomly chosen. So don't think you can sit there and count it exactly, you might be waiting longer than 3 hours, or less, its random to keep people from 'easily timing' the respawns and getting the achievement easily. This is a tough one, but well within reach.

When doing this achievement I found one of the most annoying bits was not knowing where to look for a book you had never seen spawn yet. So I decided I would take some screens and post the spawn locations so you know where to look and if it's not there be on your merry way.

*sigh* you ppl seem to be concentrated on spawn rates and such... check down and see how many times these books have been 'moved'. No, each book doesnt spawn after that to that time, great deal more random then that, and i think blizz also made it so... possible to give ya somthing to puzzle out, idk, i just know that they're a great deal more random then you suggest with spawn rates and so, nah i suggest for you to take a look around at some of the known places whenever u visit dalaran... you should get it SOME time if you do that whenever... maybe not as fast but you'll have lots of other stuff to do... kinda

Keeping a log of the spawn times really helps. I also found that it sort of made me "keeper of the times" for the other people searching for the books. I would tell everyone I met the spawn times and had an abundance of people show up and help camp around those times. Having an extra pair or eyes (or 5 or 6 extra) really makes this grind go faster.

If you're starting out alone on this, I did come up with an easy route to run. If you run this "patrol", you're guaranteed to start finding the books and getting times. (collect the real and fake times, it helps the people you friend who don't have the book yet. I kept all of the times until I had every book)

The Route:

upper citadel: on the ground by the caverns of time portal lady and the bookshelf.
lower citadel: a 2nd book on the bottom shelf of the bookshelf.
threads of fate: upper balcony on a box. (jump off the balcony to the left)
visitor center: on the ground between the bookshelves
violet hold: left side by daily quest giver on a box.
teleport room: on ground by bookshelf with no chairs.
lower ledgermain: empty bookshelf furthest from stairs.
upper ledgermain: empty bookshelf in bedroom.
jump off balcony and run to upper citadel.. rinse, repeat...

Timing:

Pop times ranged between 3 and 4 hours. I told everyone to plan for 3 hour spawns but be prepared for 4. I kept all of my times in server time. That way everyone knew when I was talking about.

Included are some sample times for my book run:

threads: 11:16a 2:07p 5:14p 9:11p
lower ledger: 11:16a 2:00p 5:03p 9:04p
upper ledger 11:20a 2:36p 6:18p 9:34p
upper citadel 1:16p 5:18p 8:54p

remember, make lots of friends and teach everyone about how these books drop and the pop time. give them your times.. you'll start seeing the same people looking for these books! I've had these new friends camping book spots while i was patrolling others. Get the times from them when a book drops.

FYI, with me keeping times and all of the help that I received from fellow book collectors, I got all 8 books in around 16 hours. (we had a lot of fake books drop).

After working on this for too long I feel confident in saying that the books respawn with a random timeer between 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours. No book seems to have a static respwn time as far as i can tell. I have followed all 8 books for a week now and this seems to hold true. Each time I recorded a book spawn it spawned while I was standing there, so there is no guesswork as to the actual spawn time I got another book a bit ago so i am only tracking the 2 books I still need.

After working on this quest for a week or so, I can CONFIRM that the books:
1) Upon spawning, last 3 minutes after read, and afterwards will vanish.
2) They will re-appear between 3 and 4 hours. This means if a book spawned at 12:00, expect the next book between 3:00 and 4:00.
3) Have many "dud" books that can also spawn in their place.

I have not seen one book spawn in any of the "other" places listed above, and I have been working on this achievement diligently for 4-5 days, with strict timers.

It's a good idea for a shaman, if your doing this, to put a sentry totem down at one of the spawns. or warlocks eye of kilrogg, also eye of the best for hunters

it may count as exploiting, just get a lock and a friend who also have this achievement to port to the top of the tower, then offer ports up there for gold/free so that everyone can get one :D

Priests have this achievement so easy... Just stand at either the Necromancy spawn or Enchantment spawn and Mind Vision to other NPCs to check the other spawns! You just need 7 (or 9) macros, consisting entirely of:
/tar NPC
/cast Mind Vision

You have to be standing at the Necromancy (Inn, top floor) spawn or the Enchantment (Threads of Fate, balcony) spawn because there aren't any NPCs you can reliably use. It helps if you already have one of these books too, or have a friend to camp with you. (This post assumes you don't have a friend.)

Here's a list of NPCs that are near the other 6 books: (With recommended macro names, refered to in the MV chain info.)

Mind Vision chains: (You'll have to jump or break Mind Vision after checking the last book in the chain for this to work!)
Starting from Enchantment: (Only 7 macros!)
1. Con to Div.
2. Ab to Int to Ill.
3. Tran to Nec.
4. Repeat. Be sure to check for Enchantment!

Starting from Necromancy: (Uses the extra 2 macros, for 9 total.)
1. Tran to Em to Fitz to Con to Div.
2. Int to Ill.
3. Ab.
4. Repeat. You'll have to run over to check Enchantment! (Or have a friend there.)

I personally prefer starting from Enchantment, as I only had Enchantment, Divination and Abjuration left to grab when I thought of doing this.

In addition to respawning on planned server restarts, books also respawn if the world server goes down for even a tiny amount of time. Was lucky to be in Dalaran when the world server hiccuped and booted everyone offline. I found one of the last two books I needed when it came back up. : )

Additional detailed information to tell you where to gaze at:

Introduction: Spawns in the Teleportation Crystal room, on the floor.

Turn right while you enter the room from the east door (now you are facing north). The book spawns on the floor at the corner, right to the bookshelf you see.

Divination: Spawns in Violet Citadel, near the port to Caverns of Time.

There are two bookshelves on the left side of the CoT portal. The book spawns not in them but between them... on the floor.

Necromancy: Spawns on top floor of Ledgermain Lodge, in a room with an empty bookshelf.

Obviously there is only one room with an empty bookshelf -- the left one. The book pops at mid level of the bookshelf.

Conjuration: Spawns in the Violet Citadel, on the bottom floor bookshelf right of Rhonin.

When you face Rhonin, on your righthand side there are two shelves, at the bottom level of the left shelf there is a book on the right and empty slot on the left, the book pops at left slot.

Abjuration: Spawns in the Dalaran Visitor Center, next to the chair and bookshelves.

FYI Visitor Center is where the Guild Master and Tabard Vendor are.
It pops on the floor on the right side next to the small table, in front of the right chair.

Transmutation: Spawns on the bottom floor of Ledgermain Lodge, in the empty bookshelf.

There are two empty bookshelves in the Lounge. You are looking for the right one (while you enter), next to a stove. The book pops at mid level of the bookshelf.

On the balcony there are 3 (or 4) boxes. The right box with an apple on it, the middle box with a pot and a bottle on it, and the left box -- usually nothing on it. The book pops on the left box.

Illusion: Spawns on a box next to the normal dungeon daily quest giver by Violet Hold.

The quest giver is in the northern end (I know it's trivial :p). There are two boxes behind him, the book pops on the box close to the corner.

Books are on spawn timers that are between 3 and 4 hours long. Once a book has been read, it will despawn in 3 minutes. Random books also spawn at these locations and are on the same timers.

A World Server crash happened 12-01-08 @ 9:00 p.m. Pacific time. Upon logging back in all books were present in Dalaran in exactly the places stipulated by prior posters here, my sincere thanks. I recommend if you witness a wolrd server crash, log back ASAP to Dalaran and scramble quickly for your books.

The transmutation book wasn't, just the non-achievement book in it's place. Now I only have 1 to wait for.

Out of a crash (whole server offline), a reset, and maintenance, every single book was up, and every single book was a dummy. I witnessed all of them personally. Now the world server crashed (rest of the server intact) and every book was up, and only 3 were real. I'll never get the last book I need...

I kind of want to say "Screw you Blizz!" on this Achievement. I've spent upwards of five hours running the circuit in Dalaran looking for ANY of these books, and I've never seen a single one, only the dummy books. I come back to Dalaran every few hours and spend about an hour running around the city. I've done this daily for two weeks.

With my luck, I may NEVER get this achievement, and thus never get the pet. This isn't a matter of skill or ability, this is a matter of being lucky.

What someone said above is true; All of the gameobjects do spawn after maintenance. However, some can be the decoy books too. After EU maintenance this morning, i did manage to grab 2 more, some weren't spawned, but i'm assuming someone had read them already. The majority of the books were up though.

This achievement is a huge time sink. I recommend a book of the Terry Goodkind variation, something about 1K pages plus, you'll probably read the entire thing before you get this done. As far as a three hour timer is concerned I have seven of the eight books thus far and have seen no indication of this. While a book usually spawns roughly every three hours in each location it is usually of the "Fluffy Bunny" variation, for every real book I came across there were three or four useless books.

Now I figured, I have one left I'll sit and wait it out do some homework, read some news, whatever. So, long story short this little escapade began nigh ten hours ago, one book spawn, useless of course.

During this time of jack batting around waiting, WoW was always open and the spawn point was visible, so no there was no way I missed it.

I was not during this time actively checking the other points, why should I? So all I can figure at this point is the spawns are linked and there is a minimum cooldown shared between the books. I.E. nobody grabs the spawned one(s), yes sometimes they come in pairs, never two real ones at a time(so far as I've seen) and they appear simultaneously. The timer will not restart.

What I have noticed however is during the peak times these spawn alot faster and there is a drop-off in the spawn rate during slow times. I realize these are quite some assumptions. However, they are what I and others have come to notice.

Motto: Read the useless books don't just leave them there, and try for these at more peak times when the spawn rate appears to be higher.

Edit: After this event I decided to test the linked theory. So, I found one at 11:01, dummy book, despawned 11:04. Another book appeared at 11:24, another dummy. I will test further. Found a real one at 11:59, i may have missed this one on a previous pass. But, these appear to be on a twenty minute timer before a dummy spawns and thirty for a real book.

I managed to grab most of them just by running around whenever I happened to be in Dalaran/thought of it. I would run around in a circle and look in all the locations. Found the first four at a rate of one a day, then the next two a few days later. Camped the final two, and the last one took me 3 1/2 hours of waiting and looking at the crate every minute or so to see if it spawned. Frustrating, but the pet is worth it!

I've been working on this the past couple days. I noticed today after the restart, that all spawn locations had books. Although, only one was an achievement book. After 4 hours only the one in the Teleportation room respawned - as another Joke book.

This could support individual spawn timers for each location.

ive noticed the 3hour timer is TRUE for all books - except in the violet citidel : I mshed a GM and reported the bug of a book not spawing for over 7 hours (no joke, no nothing) and they said theyll look into it. So far im at the 20 hour mark, i got 7 of 8 :D

I'm playing on EU-Lothar and i created an extra chat channel for this achievement.
After a while we had enough people to camp every spawn point for most of the time.
I have got the achievement on two different chars now, working on the third and can report the following facts:

Spawn locations

I can confirm the following spawn locations:

Some helpful tips

And I can only recommend to make a new chat channel for that and advertise that channel.
There are lots of people out there doing the same and together it is so much easier.
Use it to collect the spawn times and once you have the times from all locations it is easy to control it
because of the 3-4h timer.

Most of the time on our server there are about 5-25 people in the channel.
And between 10AM until 2-3AM we have mostly complete coverage of all spawn points.
And we used a simple macro to keep track of the last known spawn times:
(its in german, but you should know what i mean)

I check a few of these spots everytime im in Dalaran and Ive NEVER seen any readable books. Now Im not obsessing over it or anything. Im not camping spots for hours on end just to get this acheivement, but I do "drive bys" on all the spots when Im there, but so far to no avail. Just thought Id throw that out there for us folks who only get to play a few hours a week. This ones either gonna take some luck, or some perserverence.

I noticed something strange earlier this evening. I got my Kirin Tor Familiar today, and was standing around outside the Violet Citadel showing off (as you are required to do when you get something awesome). Suddenly my pet turned 180 degrees (I was standing still at the time), facing The Threads of Fate, raised his right hand in front of him and did the arcane explosion animation a few times. I thought this weird, so I ran upstairs and sure enough, the Enchantment book had spawned on the balcony.
Now of course this could just be a coincidence, but it does seem rather odd. I'm wondering if the pet is either able to detect nearby book spawns, make them spawn, or change trash books into books for the achievement.

ok so...this morning at 08:07 i went to see if conjuration was spawned...and a flavour book was in it's place (Journal of Archmage Antonidas)
at 08:08 it dispawned and for 3 houres i've waited there and no respawn (ive read that the timer is 3 houres-3 and a bit from Ceruleagos's post...)
it spawned at 11:23...but it was still a flavour book, "kirin tor monthly (march issue)" and it dispawned at 11:26...

this confirms that the respawn timer is about 3 houres and 15 minutes

so i'll check back tonight at about 21:20 when i get back from work :D

anyway the locations are all right. about the timer i experienced various combinations. and got most of em from 3 to 4 hours later the previous one despawned. my hint is to come back 3 hour after a book despawn and camp location for about an hour.

All what I can confirm like a few others after 3 days searching all of them and finding all 8

minimum respawn time encountered: 3 hours
maximum respawn time encountered: 4 hours

So those claiming the minimum or max is 3h20 or spawns times are specific to each books are wrong, I have seen 3h and 4h exactly 3x times, all other spawns were random times between 3h and 4h. There is absolutely no books spawning before or after this range.

//edit: Please don't downrate, think, how do you know it's a 3 to 4 hours respawn without spending hours searching for them? Because of several comments like that confirming it!

I sat and waited for introduction many times, I saw about 6 placeholders total. It spawned fairly consistently every 3hours 33minutes, except for the last time where it spawned in 4hr 03minutes. If you see the placeholder spawned, write down the time and come back in 3hours, it worked fairly well for me.

Just a note about the book that spawns on the balcony of Threads of Fate -- you can see the spawn point if you run up the small ramp outside the door downstairs. Move your camera beside the balcony and the small box up top will appear, showing you either nothing or a book if it's spawned. With this, you don't need to go inside and upstairs every time, and can instead just run past. :)

If you find a book you need and intend to announce it to other people, be sure you read the book yourself, first. You never know if you've gotten there just in time or not, and you'll be kicking yourself if the book despawns while you're announcing its presence.

Just got the achievment today and i have to say the best part was noticing that it was archmage vargoths quarters and realizing that was the guy in netherstorm that was stuck in the tower. I promptly teleported out ran to the bank and grabbed my staff that i saved from the quest line and summoned his image in the tower; i was hoping for some sort of aknowledgement or silly easter egg but sadly nothing happened :(. Also, the pet is preety awsome it put me at 61 pets today.

I wonder if some books are harder to get than others?

So far I've seen 6 real books and 14 fake books. This is an overall 30% success rate.
However, some books have been real easy for me to get, while others have been a major pain.

Will some of you post which books gave you the hardest time? I'm just wondering if it's random.

My personal experience:
Introduction (portal room): DIFFICULT. I've seen 6 fakes and still not the actual Intro book.
Abjuration (visitor's center): DIFFICULT. I've seen 4 fakes and still not the actual book.
Enchantment (threads of fate): MEDIUM. (2 fakes, 1 actual.)
The rest (citadel, lounge, hold): EASY. (Got these on first or second try.)

Normally I'd chalk this up to randomness, but I've heard horror stories about how the Introduction book is very difficult to get. So, I'm curious...

OK, I see there is some confusion about spawn times, so me & a friend did a little expieriment.

Say for example, you find a book (I won't bore you with where they are, 'cos thats already quite clear now) and the time is 13:39. Unfortunatlym it's not the book you want, but you read it anyway. The respawn timer is now reset. Anyone who wants to read that book has 3 minutes to do so, or POOF, it's gone.

Now, as you clicked the book at 13:39, you'll have to wait AT LEAST 3 hours, before another book will appear.

I see people saying "It's random between the 3rd & 4th hour", it's not, however, there is a trick so you don't have to wait around.

You clicked the book at 13:39, so you need to be back in that spawn location three hours later (16:39) Still no book? Then come back 30 mins later. Still no book? Then it'll be there 30 mins later.

To sum things up, it'll be there at 3 hours, 3.5 hours, OR 4 hours AFTER you have clicked the previous book.

It's always handy to write down the time you clicked the last book, and now blizz has added an alarm clock, it's very easy to remind yourself.

I find it's always helpful to annouce a find in the trade channel, people tend to go on a bit of a hunt for the next hour, and usually annouce similar finds. Remember you have 3 minutes!

While waiting for the Abjuration book, I recorded the exact time between 2 "fake" books spawning.

The amount of time from me reading the first book to the next's spawn was 3 hours and 10 minutes on the dot. For the sake of putting it to the test... I'll sit here again for the next spawn. (It's the last book I need so with the help of some movies I don't mind sitting here and waiting it out again.)

It has a ~fixed time per day. A friend of mine camped the Violet Citadel top floor one and came to the conclusion that, with a difference of 5 minutes, the books spawned around the same time at different days. He had mostly fakes for that one, hence his discovery.

I don't know if this is valid for other books.

After I saw a guildie completing the quest I decided to get the same achievement today. I started with downloading the map from this topic and decided to start at the book at VH since there would be loads of people there. I mounted my kodo and sat right on top of it. After 30 min I got quite boring of it and I decided to ride around looking for the others. At 20.59 I found a book at the crystal, but it wasn't the book that I needed. I wrote it down and skipped that place because I now had the respawn timer. I came upon the book close to the portal at 21.10 and skipped that place aswell.

When I jumped down at 21.13 I saw the book close to Rhonis. Which was also a book that wasn't on the list. I decided to write this down aswell and planned my camping spot from 0.10 - 0.15 or 1.10 - 1.15

I decided to go to the book at VH and also there was a copy that I didn't needed. It was at 21.16 and I wrote it down on my list. I now had a decent 3 books I could check out. So 3 more books I didn't had to worry about.

Which left me 2 books. The one at the balcony and the one upstairs in the Inn. I decided to switch between both of them every 2 min. Around 21.28 I talked with a horde via my horde alt and he said respawn is every 2-3 hours. I decided to look around 22.55 and 23.55 if the book has respawned. If that was a yes I would quickly go to the others and grab them.

At 21.32 I saw a book above the Inn, which ment that that would respawn in 2-4 hours I decided to go to the last spot I didn't had data of, the spot on the balcony where I met the horde. When I came there around 21.36 the book was there.

Which means, if the respawn timers were 2-4 hours I could get the following books in a row:

*.00 Dalaran crystal book

*.10 Portal book ( Kirin Tor )

*.13 Book at Rhonis

*.16 Violet Hold book

*.32 Book above the Inn

I'll update my post later to see if it's correct and what the correct respawn timer is.

Best way to do this achievement: Organisation.
I created a chat channel on Dragonblight (Alliance) called bookhunters

We tracked respawn times for all 8 spawns over 3-4 days. We picked up 3-4 books that people were missing, and had about 12+ through the channel during this time.

Also: yelling out locations when they spawn is a good idea too.

Just a slight update, 1 more book to go for me. I had 2 fake respawns on that spot close to the portal and hopefully the 3rd one is the right book. Sadly I have to wait from 1:17 - 2:17 to get a chance for the book. Glad it's christmas.

They should decrease the timer because I don't see the point for waiting 3hours in front of a bookshelf, multiplied by 10...this is plain stupid... is it a game or not for the #$%^ sake ? whats fun in sitting here doing nothing in front of that bookshelf without even be sure that it will spawn...just to get 1/8th of the whole thing IF you get lucky that the real book spawn...you should be able to check here and then and find them up, and I checked like 20 times on all spot, I never saw a single one...
Do I have to count the people that already read this or that book, that will take a pleasure to make it despawn just to have fun while waiting for their remaining books to spawn...meaning that not only you have to face people waiting for the book to spawn because they need it, but also some that don't even need it...

But I understand people that spent time to get the achievement, so they just can't/won't/shouldn't decrease it, but it has been very poorly designed IMO....thats like the rare spawn rate...

Oh well I understand that on a low populated server it's a cake to complete that kind of achievement, but not on mine when there is some time huge queues sunday night...this game really lack some dynamic factor...it's so easy to implement, but hey I guess Blizzard devs are not that skilled afterall... I am a dev myself I know what I'm talking about...

Because in the end, who get the achievement done? thoses who can afford to play at night or early in the morning...if the game was dynamic, the difficulty would remain the same at every hour (wouldn't it be fair ?), since it would depend only on the number of people logged on the server/zone or whatever factor you need it to be dynamic.
By the way I play mostly at night, I'm just talking by experience, that a lot of stuff get easier, like Frostbitten and stuff, and it's unfair, that's all, I'm not chocked to admit it.

Just as an addendum to that excellent quoted info, I found the Conjuration book at the location dubbed VC1 and a "fake" one at LL1 right after a server restart, which contradicts

All book spawns seem to be on a 3 hour respawn timer, and all but LL1, LL4, and VC1 respawn on server crash/restart.

Tip! If you're really into getting this achievement I would recommend creating a channel called /librarians and getting anyone you see who is looking to get the books to join. If someone sees a book, they call it out in the channel, so even if you're not in Dalaran you can hearth and get the book for this rather crazy achievement!

We started it on Shadowsong Europe less than a few hours ago and the channel already has loads of people in it.

Use macros to advertise it in /General but remember not to spam :)

I have been doing this achievement for 8 hours straight now, and i have 4 Arcane Magic books read.

SPAWN TIME: Each book spawns every 3 - 4 hours (sometimes few minutes more). They do not affect each others spawn time.

LOCATION: Locations shown on wowhead are correct. Each book has its own spawn location, though a "fake" one might spawn instead of the Arcane Magic ones.

So here's how i did this:

First off, there were 4 people in my group looking for the books, so we each picked a location to camp. When we started finding books, Arcane Magic or "fake" ones, i wrote down their spawn times and the times they should spawn again:

Introduction: 3:30 (6:30 - 7:30 respawn), 6:41 (9:41 - 10:41)
Conjuration: 3:30 (6:30 - 7:30), 6:54 (9:54 - 10:54)
Enchantment: 5:50 (8:50 - 9:50)
Necromancy: 4:48 (7:48 - 8:48), 8:48 (11:48 - 12:48)
Abjuration: 3:30 (6:30 - 7:30), 7:18 (10:18 - 11:18)
Divination: 5:23 (8:23 - 9:23)
Illusion: 5:22 (8:22 - 9:22), 9:17 (12:17 - 13:17)
Transmutation: 4:47 (7:47 - 8:47), 8:48 (11:48 - 12:48)

Those are the timers i have written down so far. And yeah.. at 3:30 three "fake" books spawned at the same time :P They seem to spawn more often than the Arcane Magic ones.

After two weeks of hunting these books and getting all the others fairly easily the Introduction book in the portal room proved to be the hardest but after camping for two days, and spawning six fakes in a row, I got it. Average spawn time? 4 hours and 8 minutes

To save a little time when grinding these you can stand at the top of the stairs of Violet Citadel and face the Threads of Fate and run your mouse across the top of the balcony fence where the boxes are to see if your cursor changes to a wheel. I found book titled "STAY OUT!" that way, not part of achievement however.

Today was server reset day, and i have been up for 24hours trying to get this achievement done. I have found out the following (possibly useless)information:
*8 books spawn once the server comes back online for me today (Shadowsong EU) this was 7trash and 1 real book at 5am GMT.
*Trash books spawn at 3 hour intervals from from the time they are read. ie 5am, 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, 11pm, 2am etc.
*If trash books arent read they will not despawn and a new one wont spawn untill 3 hours after it has been read.
*The Necromancy Book in The Ledgerdemain Lounge (46,39) seems to be the rarest of all the books to spawn, as this book has not spawned in 4days (to the point of this post).
*1-3 real books will spawn the rest will be trash books.
*Some of the Schools of Arcane Magic books spawned in between the 3 hour respawn time suggesting that all trash books have a 3 hour respawn and different Schools of Arcane Magic have different spawn times. which would then naff up the 3Hour interval period....

So far I have been camping the Illusion book on Eitrigg for about 82 hours without missing 1 spawn, and of course all have been fake. I would have to say this is the rarest of them all but im sure they all have there random spawns, In about 5 min the next book will spawn and I'm praying it's Illusion but ya never know. Sad times for Eitrigg atm =(

I spent the best part of 27 hours monitering the spawns in one location (lower Legerdemain) using the assumption that the book spawned within the 3 to 4 hour window. During that time, the location spawned 9 times. I slept through one of these spawns, and missed a second one becuase I was in a guild instance run I could not leave (of course this was the one time the real book spawned).

In every case, the books did spawn in that window, including, as the poster above pointed out, one instance where the spawn actually occured a few minutes after the four hour mark.

I did observe that the book was more likely to spawn near the four hour mark than at any other time. This occured four times out of eight where I recorded spawn times.

I can also confirm the 3-4 hour theory.

I have encountered dozens of books (many fakes) over the past few days of looking. After writing down the times, a new book has ALWAYS re-spawned within 3-4 hours.

I believe it is also safe to say: if you find a book, and it's a fake, write down the time and return within about 3 hours and wait for it again. I have done this every time, and ALWAYS catch the next book within the 3-4 hour re-spawn time.

I finally got the achievement today after camping the last book (Abjuration) for about 3 days. The 3-4 hour spawn time seems accurate.

The pet is awesome and totally worthwhile so persevere!

Warlock Specific Tip:

Eye of Kil'Rog combined with Glyph of Kil'Rog is nice for monitoring this Achievement since you can then fly in Dalaran entering through balcony's and fly over walls. Furthermore it also saves time by not having to dismount, and since the countdown on these books are 3 min's theres plenty of time to get there.

I doesn't really matter. Spawn times are random, he's just simply giving a 1hour window in which the next book could possibly spawn. You have to keep in mind that he did this in one sitting, not over a few days.

You don't necessaryly have to go trough all of the pages of a book to get credit, simply clicking a it is sufficient enough

The reward will be a blue book wich you can find inside your mailbox roughly a couple of seconds after achieving the achievement.
You can use this book to teleport to an off-limits section of Dalaran, once there use the book again to teleport back to the city streets.

On my server, most of the Alliance who really want to get this done have joined the "HigherLearning' channel. We let the others in the channel know when a book spawns, and whether it was real or a fake. Then we can predict the next spawn time down to a 1 hour window (books always respawn between 3 and 4 hours after they were last clicked).

Most of the players in the channel keep a macro updated with the next known spawn times. Then, when a book could potentially spawn (when it's OTC, or "on the clock"), we make sure at least one person from the channel is staring at the spawn point for the next hour.

Now, I got tired of constantly messing with my macro, so I wrote a little mod to help keep track of the timers and announce them to the channel. If anyone's interested in using it, here's a link to it:

I can't find the poster who recommended this, but this is what I did, we were able to get a handful of people this acheivement in one day!

I created a macro that encouraged people who were looking for the books to join a channel called "BookClub." Once in the channel, we coordinated camp spots and spawn times. I kept track of the times so we knew which was coming up next.

I can confirm a 3-4 hr spawn time, the fakes and reals are on the same spawn timer. The list below shows most of the times we got, real book spawns are bolded...

Introduction - 3:30, 6:30, 9:39, 11:00
Conjuration - 4:08, 8:55, 12:40
Enchantment - 3:50, 7:49, 10:55
Necromancy - 5:14, 8:30, 12:19
Abjuration - 3:30, 10:56
Divination - 7:38, 11:00
Illusion - 8:13, 11:22
Transmutation - 4:06, 7:31, 11:04 (yes, all real)

I suggest starting a book club, such as: /join bookclub
When you see other toons obviously looking for books, invite them to join as well.
When you find a book (real or fake), announce it, read it, and write down the server time.
Expect the next spawn to be between 3 and 4 hours afterwards.

I did exactly this and we were able to get a handful of people their acheivement in one day. I also created a macro to advertise in chat. I think you'll have the best luck doing this on a Saturday.

I was under the impression, after getting all but one book, that they all spawned in different locations randomly. Are we absolutely sure of the set spawn points?

Edit: Confirmed, my Divination book spawned in the Violet Citadel 2nd floor, right where its supposed to be.
On my server (Rexxar US), spawn time was at 1:30pm server time.

This is a Priest only Mind Vision chain I made using an above poster's idea.
Start by standing on the balcony where the Enchantment book spawns and proceed with the following order and macros. You can just copy + paste the first line and press Mind Vision if you don't want to make 7 macros. Also, you can always use an alternate action bar if you want to keep them hidden.

If you read the book it will disappear within 3min (resetting the spawn timer)

If an achievement book does spawn, more than one player can read the book and get the credit for reading it. (if they read it within 3min of the first person who read it)

When I find a book I announce it within trade chat so if other would like to read it they can (providing they can get to it within 3min)

Ask around if others are looking for books, group up, spread out to keep your eyes on multiple locations, share spawn timer info (this greatly reduces the amount of running around)

On Rexxar we are currently running in channel Books and using this macro to announce and track spawn times. We're doing this with the 3hr +1 window of opportunity assumption and so far it's doing well for us. 2 or 3 people completed while I've been working on mine. I'm down to 1 book. Poping the macro in the room seems to help keep people interested and well gives a little hope...

After receiving the book to teleport up to the room, DO NOT delete the book. Although you can get it back from Rhonin, without the book, you cannot teleport back downstairs.

Here is what I made to hunt these books.

First, be sure to have enough time for this: a whole day is best, an afternoon is okay.
It is possible to run from book to book in a little less than 3 minutes, so you shouldn't miss any of them. Now... start running.

Once you see a book, read it and remember the time you read it (note it somewhere - a spreadsheet is best). If you add 3 hours, you have the "not before" time. Add 4 hours, you have the "not after" time. So, a 1 hour long window for that book.

While not in that window for that book, you can skip it in your run from book to book, this may shorten you trip. I managed to have one hour long time windows when doing that, and I got help from other players to cover some places too.

Our experience confirm the "between 3 and 4 hours after a book has been read", but it seems it's more after it fades away rather than after being read, so if you're first to read it, add 3 hours and 3 minutes for "not before", and 4 hours and 3 minutes for "not after".

Here are the moments we read a book (all but 3 were fake ones) :

From the past two nights, I have now seen two books that fell out of the 3-4 hour rule. Both times it was the Enchantment book at Threads of Fate. The other night itspawned about 10 minutes after the 4 hours was up. and today it spawned at the 4 h 36 minute mark. Both times I wrote down the previuos spawn time and know 100% they were correct.

Locations aside, I've been a little confused with the whole time thing, so after completing the achievement, this is what I gathered.

The spawn is totally RNG in terms of real book vs. fake book. This was evident on my last book (Illusion, at the daily dungeon quest giver) as I started camping for it. It spawned at 20:30, 23:50, 03:30, 06:50, 10:25, 14:30, 18:15 and the real book only spawned at 18:15. (Yes, I checked the one at 03:30 in the morning, I even set my alarm clock to wake me up at that time =P). While most of them seemed to have spawned at around the ~30 mins mark into the 1 hour range, it is entirely possible for a book to spawn at 3 hours and 1 minute, so I suggest if you're camping for the book, get there a few minutes earlier, and prepare for an hour long wait at the worst.

The time as noted is also across the board, anywhere from 3 to 4 hours from the last known spawn time. What I did was log in 3 hours after I've seen a spawn, and basically keep WoW on desktop in a corner, while doing some other stuff and then once a book spawn, hover over it to check.

I finished this in around 2 days of camping + a lot of running around Dalaran, but what made it easier was Barthilas Horde using /y every time a book spawned. I may not be able to read Orcish, but if some horde is yelling in Dalaran for a few times in a second, I can guess what it's about :)

For those interested in what the different schools mean here's a short description (taken from PlanetBaldursGate):

Alteration (Transmutation) spells cause a change in the properties of some already existing thing, creature, or condition. This is accomplished by magical energy channeled through the wizard.

Abjuration spells are a group of specialized protective spells. Each is used to prevent or banish some magical or nonmagical effect or creature. They are often used to provide safety in times of great danger or when attempting some other particularly dangerous spell.

Conjuration/Summoning spells bring something to the caster from elsewhere. Conjuration normally produces matter or items from some other place. Summoning enables the caster to compel living creatures and powers to appear in his presence or to channel extraplanar energies through himself.

Divination spells enable the wizard to learn secrets long forgotten, to predict the future, and to uncover things hidden or cloaked by spells.

Enchantment/Charm spells cause a change in the quality of an item or the attitude of a person or creature. Enchantments can bestow magical properties on ordinary items, while charms can unduly influence the behavior of beings.

Illusions/Phantasms deal with spells to deceive the senses or minds of others. Spells that cause people to see things that are not there, hear noises not made, or remember things that never happened are all illusions.

Necromancy is one of the most restrictive of all spell schools. It deals with dead things or the restoration of life, limbs, or vitality to living creatures. Although a small school, its spells tend to be powerful. Given the risks of the adventuring world, necromantic spells are considered quite useful.

The last one missing (because of Introduction):

Invocation/Evocation spells channel magical energy to create specific effects and materials. Invocation normally relies on the intervention of some higher agency (to whom the spell is addressed), while evocation enables the caster to directly shape the energy.

Does anyone have any information about the rate of "fake"/placeholder books? I've flipped 21 books this weekend and ALL of them were placeholders. Not real. Not counted for the achievement. A GM told me there's no known bug but 21 fakes in a row is definitely abnormal. Well, any educated guesses?

Ok, I know it's mentioned in the other comments here, but I missed it -- I expected to see the reward book pop into my inventory upon completion of the achievement. It actually gets mailed to you, so don't panic like I did -- just go check your mail. :)

I have camped the The Schools of Arcane Magic - Transmutation for 3 days now. only with some few hour brakes. and not one single time has the real book spawned >_<
it's the last book I need and it's driving me nuts. All the other books were easy, but this thing is 100% fake book so far.

EDIT: Well I've camped for another day.... 6 more fake books.... this is rediculus... still 100% fake

In our server (Bloodhoof EUR) we created a specific chanel, just typing : /join higherlearning
Each player on this achievement can so inform the others about the spawn timers and when a book is up.
There are 30-40 players around 8:00 PM server time each day.
Everywhere in Azeroth, you just have to use your Hearthstone when someone is calling for a spawn.
VERY usefull !

I think there is a way to know when the books are going to appear, in the top of the tower of dalaran there is a mage Archmage John Nicholas <The Punisher> I think each time this mague speak appears one book on dalaran of the achievement higher learning I only suppose It because he said " umm interesting" and "too much books not much time"

I have a sneaking suspicion that the spawn timers are somehow tied to Wintergrasp battles: I have taken the habit of checking the spawn points after each battle, and have found at least one book after each one I've participated in.

I have no time to look into it, but if people are hungint the books, you might want to see if there's any correlation

It also helps if you create a channel for people to call out fake and real books and were they spawned.

for example on my server you would /join dalaranbooks and all the people in that channel are searching for the books and lets other people in the channel know when they have spawned and were.

Each of the books needed for this achievement spawn at a specific location within Dalaran. These locations can be seen on the map above. Each book is on an individual timer (they don't all spawn at the same time). Each location will spawn a book every 3-4 hours, however there is only a chance that the book that spawns will be one of the books required. Once spawned a book will remain until roughly 2-3 minutes after someone reads it.

1: Transmutation: Spawns on the bottom floor of Ledgermain Lodge, on the empty bookshelf.
2: Enchantment: Spawns on the 2nd story balcony of the store Threads of Fate, on the crate.
3: Conjuration: Spawns in the Violet Citadel, on the bottom floor bookshelf.
4: Divination: Spawns in Violet Citadel, upstairs on the left (near the Caverns of Time portal).
5: Necromancy: Spawns on top floor of Ledgermain Lodge, on an empty bookshelf.
6: Abjuration: Spawns in the Dalaran Visitor Center, downstairs near the bookshelf.
7: Illusion: Spawns on a crate next to the normal dungeon daily quest giver by Violet Hold.
8: Introduction: Spawns in the Teleportation Crystal room, on the floor.

Suggested method of completing:
Every time you enter and before you exit Dalaran spend 3 minutes running around and checking your remaining spawn locations.

Make friends with a few others who are working on this achievement and announce to each other when you notice one of these books has spawned.

When you are down to just 1-3 books remaining, AFK your character next to a spawn location and go about some other work next to the computer or alt-tabbed checking regularly.

If you're dedicated to getting this achievement in a single day, note the times you've seen 'fake' books at the correct spawn locations and come back to the location and watch it carefully 3 hours later until the correct book spawns.

Upon completion of this achievement you are mailed a book The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery which upon use will portal you to an upstairs room in one of the towers in Dalaran. You must talk to the NPC Archmage Vargoth to recieve your pet.

AIght, so i have 7 out of 8 books, missing the one on the ground floor in the ledgermain thing.
first 15 days i spent, keeping an eye on the wrong bookshelf.
Last 3 days ive been camping it whenever i had the possibility, and after seeing a fake, returning 3 hours later.
im ofcourse talking about "The Schools of Arcane Magic - Transmutation"
Last 11 book spawns have all been fake.. every time i see a book spawn, and then realise its a fake.. im about to cry :( this is getting on my nerves.. im considdering setting my clock for when im going to sleep, but CBA to ruin my day because of another fake book

I can confirm that they do spawn after the weekly reset/patch.

I have been attempting to finish this by checking after the weekly resets for the past 3 weeks. The first two weeks didn't have any of the real books (note: I only checked the four spawns I needed). I just logged in however (as soon as my server came online obviously) and found both the conjuration and illusion books up (along with 2 fake ones). I guess it is possible that they have a lower spawn rate when the servers first come up, but it would require a much larger sample size before any conclusions could really be made.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be given how rare they are, but I figured it was worth confirming for those that didn't want to stare at the floor or run in circles for hours. ;D

Another reward I didn't expect was the secret room you get teleported to. It's very not laggy! Now I have a cool pet and somewhere to hang in Dalaran that won't make my computer blow up.

Edit: Should state how less laggy it is..
In Dalaran at busy times, I get about 10 fps. While in the room you teleport to with the book, I get around 70 fps!

I would still recommend checking after 3hours and waiting an hour or so if you have the patience, just in case.

PLEASE READ THIS!

As far as I know, the books that spawn in the same locations as The School of Arcane Magic books, but have titles OTHER than "The Schools of Arcane Magic - " DO NOT count towards the achievement. I have read eight books in each location, but only received credit for one of the books.

I also spoke to a GM about this, and they said that there have been some problems with this achievement and that the books that have a title other than "The Schools of Arcane Magic- " do not count towards the achievement... (As if a random wait time of a few hours wasn't bad enough, the book that does finally spawn may not be the one you need!)

If anyone knows anything to the contrary, please post.

P.S.: The GM mentioned that an addon of mine might be causing problems...

A very good time to this, if you have the opportunity to, is to check all spots after a server restart or maintenance. Whenever the server goes down, all timers seems to reset and books spawn at all places, fake or real.

For the record, "Mr.Pinchy" is the biggest pet yet, he's just rare to get and he might spawn as "Furious Mr.Pinchy" and attack you instead of "Benevolent Mr.Pinchy" and fight for you
Mr.Pinchy is taller then anything other then a Tauren and Draenei

Thought I'd repost this for the people (like me) who'd like to have an idea when the books spawn, and not just where (since that info's been covered again and again). This is just a general idea, they may spawn a little sooner or a little later. the times in parentheses are when the book should respawn after they've been read at the unbracketed times.

I followed this guide, and it was very helpful. One book I was waiting for spawned about a half-hour after the posted time, however. Just be patient, and it'll show up.

Warning, geek alert!

I was hunting the last 3 books on my shammy. I popped Sentry Totem to monitor two spots at the same time. A priest saw me do that and got an idea. He ran to one spot, targeted a npc close by and ran back to another spot. With Mind Vision he could now do what I was doing with Sentry Totem.

I complimented him on the idea and he told me that it was my use of the totem that gave him the idea. I suggested that he got the names of npc's near the other spots and did a /target <name> followed by Mind Vision. Unfortunately that didn't work as many of them were out of range and couldn't be targeted unless he moved closer.

After a moment or two, we figured out to pick a chain of npc's starting with a npc at the fountain in the middle of town and targetting the next npc from there and so on. Half an hour later the priest had a number of macros to eyeball the 3 spots he still needed. When I logged of, he was working on setting up yet another macro to connect him to the npc at the fountain in the center of town no matter where in Dala he was standing..

So to the priests out there, it should be possible to set up a number of macros enabling you to check on all 8 books from anywhere in Dalaran by using /target, Mind Vision and the proper npc's..

It's so geeky that it's fun, and it made me wish i had a priest too..

On the Moonrunner server where I look for these books. The area where the Necromancy pops up is in Upper Ledgermain on the bookshelf. It's the room with the 4 beds. The really bad part is that this is the last book I have to get. And there have been 13 fake books spawn in this area. Not seen the real book come up yet. Anyone else had this problem?

Just had the Necromancy book pop in exactly 4hrs 8min from when the placeholder was clicked. Not when it disappeared, but when I first clicked the placeholder. Came back 3hrs later and camped. So it's more than 4hrs sometimes; though thankfully not much more in this case. Just finished the achievement; thanks everyone for your comments.

By accident, not really knowing too much about this achievement I found the book enchantment and the book conjuration. Reading this Wowhead forum I decided since I had today off and it was the server roll start for the week this would be a good time to devote to getting this done. Server fresh start happened around 8 am and I logged in quickly having left my toon in Legerdermain Lounge 2nd floor. It was lucky as this book spawned real and I got Necromancy. I had bookclub on but it was very little help with hardly anyone using it.

Logging back 3 hours ( 11 am running for 2 hours ) later I began my runs...Leg Lounge (downstairs) was a fake so I continued to run the circuit and picked up the Violet citadel book. That cut my circuit to 4 locations now. Possibly the books I already had were real spawns because all my other needed locals were fake books. I notated the times of the ones I found.

Logging in at the third hour again ( 3-4 pm) I got the violet hold book.

Logging on at 3 hours again (7-8) I picked up the visitor center book, which the 2 previous times had been fake books.

Last log in back around 10:30 as I had notated the previous times all I needed was the 1st fl Leg Lounge book, transmutation...the 3 previous books had been fakes so I expected the real book and got it and the achievement.

Best advice I can give is devote a day to it picking the day of the server rollover. Run your circuit, notate all fake book times. For me, bookclub was useless but certainly log into it just in case. Each time I was able to narrow my field of running down to exact locations and times which helped tremendously. The first circuits were rough tho and I ran between them continuously with no down time. When I was down to the last 2-3 books needed I had the fake books spawn time so I was able to quest while waiting for the next spawns; only logging in close to the 3 hr mark.

I suspect, with no proof that each 3 hour period spawns 3 real books, the rest fake. That means that each book spawns once every 12 hours. It also means that if your first 3 checks at a specific location were fakes you are definately getting the real book on the 4th time ( which is why U want to start after a server rolling start because that means all books spawns start anew from zero time). Start time of quest needing 5 books was 8 am finished the achievement at 11:30 pm.

if it hasn't been mentioned yet, after a server restart, books will spawn in all locations. Wether or not they're the real ones is random. but a helpful tip nonetheless

A couple of things that I wondered at the start that might help others:

The books have the usual "read" context icon, ie the magnifying glass, not a cog like normal usable items.

The books don't "sparkle" like quest items.

I think that these books may respawn individually. It would make sense really. Point is, I found Introduction and Conjuration within a couple minutes of each other. Good luck to all of you working on this! =D

I've a theory that each books shares a spawn with another book, not related to the achievement, as in the case with the Abjuration book. While these books arent helpful with the achievement, they generally are very funny reads. My favorite so far is the Portals are NOT Garbage Bins, found on the top floor of the building where you can buy emblem cloth gear, on the balcony.

This theory is sort of correct (except for the bit about it not being helpful). These books spawn in pairs - every time a book spawns, another book will spawn in a separate location. The books may or may not be relevant for the achievement but if you find a book it's definitely worth quickly looking round the other spawn locations for another book but be quick.

I'm using the mod TomTom to help me keep track of the book's locations. I turn off the setting that removes waypoints when you get near them (set "clear waypoint distance" to 0) and I check each position when I'm bored in Dalaran, deleting the waypoints as I find the books. To help any other TomTom users out, here are my waypoints...

I have found a very useful guide for this achievement Here. They explain where to find the books, the cords and a picture of what it looks like when the book spawns. Also explains the way they spawn and the spawn criteria.

I have also found a useful mod Here that works with other people trying to find the book and gives you bar timers when someone has clicked on the book to keep track of spawn times.

On Azgalor, they've made a channel called 'bookclub' and occasionally spam for people to join it to look for the books together. When one finds a book, the announce it in the channel and people can come and get the book as well. Nifty.

I ran into two of them, read them and i looked at the log for the Higher Learning achievement yet... it did not count for some reason. This can take a long time to complete. I have seen 3 fakes in a row at a couple of locations. I think the spawn rate is random. Some say once in a 12 hour period. I know something spawns in each spot every 3 to 4 hours. My best advice is to use an add on like "Dalaran University". At least you will have a timer running on it. If you log out or get disconnected it will reset the timer. Or is has for me. Best of luck.

Today I found 3 books had spawned at the same time. 2 fake books and 1 real book (sadly, not the one I needed). Have they changed the timers on this since the latest patch? I've seen multiple books spawned at the same time in the various locations in Dalaran.

I suggest you get an addon from Curse.com called Dalaran University. It’s simple to use and will help you keep track of when each book may spawn. Just keep in mind, books can spawn as a “real” or “fake” book in each specific location. A fake book that spawns counts (on timers) as a real book, so you will have to wait another 3-4 hours for a chance a real book will spawn.

Camping tips for these books

Make sure you know all the spawnpoints and the common timers on them, all seem to have 3-4h timers.

Camp 1 book until you have it. If you get a 'fake' book, do a quick ride/run around for the other ones you are missing. Tracking all books with timers might ofc work, but I did it one at a time, and it worked fine.

Don't just sit there eyeballing an empty spot for xx hours while you are waiting for the spawn, read a book while you are waiting, or watch a movie or two. 2 screens are ofc ideal, but you can always just cover 90% of your screen with a movie, and have the top corner open so you can see the book when it spawns. This is my prefered method for all rare spawn camping.

Once a 'fake' book spawns, set your timer(/sw, 60=1min, do the math :) ) for 2h50min or so and come back for camping. I doubt a real book will spawn right after a 'fake' one.

Read ALL books, 'fake' or real, one day there might be an achievement for the 'fake' books. Reading will also make the book despawn faster.

Broadcast in city channel or even trade what book has spawned and where, the second you see it, lasts 3mins only. I got 75% of my books this way, by kind night elfs yelling in channels.

If you are going to log out in Dalaran, log out at a spawnpoint. Book might be there when you log in. A mate of mine got this achieve' that way.

On server restart, get ready to do the 2min ride/run around Dalaran. If you are truely lucky, you snatch all books as they respawn/reset on server restart.

This achieve might take some time, but it has a nice reward, the mini-pet 'Kirin Tor Familiar' and The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery that allows you to teleport to the upper chamber in a tower in Dalaran.

This tower is lagfree and good for mass-crafting, like glyphs if your server is overloaded one day.

I managed to find 7 out of 8 books on the specified locations, after a server reboot, in less than 3 minutes. Five of them were real and two of them fakes. I found the remaining three in a couple of days after periodic search.

So I've been camping the book on the balcony of Threads of Fate, it's the last book I need. Yesterday, five times in a row it was the fake book. Five times! I didn't miss a single spawn. I went to bed and woke up about 8 hours later, so I missed maybe 2 spawns, and as soon as I log in the book is there... but of course it's the fake one. Just how random is this spawn? Why am I getting the fake book so much?

On a busy server it can be quite hard to get a chance to read those books. On my server i was once standing at a book location waiting for a spawn. i just waited 30 min and i have seen at least 5 people checking out if the book was there too.

What I did then is, every time when the server restarts (eu its wednesdays 3am) i would port myself to dala, and stand at a book location.

make sure you know where the books spawn. then when the server restarts run to all the book locations you know. I missed 3 books, and i got 2 books by doing this. i bet there spawn more just after a server restart.

At this point i only miss one book, which is the Abjuration book, in the Dalaran Visitor Center. Anyway, i been watching this spot carefully and i have learned that they spawn time is 3 to 4 hours, but it is balanced, so that i will spawn within the same hour. For instance i have seen one of the false books twice at 23:XX, once at 20:XX and five times ( :S ) at 17:XX. So if you want this book you can simply wait every third hour: 02:XX, 05:XX,08:XX,11:XX,14:XX,17:XX, 20:XX and 23:XX.

This however is only for the book "The Schools of Arcane magic - Abjuration". I belive that these books are linked in groups, so some books will spawn within the same hour, and some at a different time. "The Schools of Arcane magic - Introduction" might spawn at the previous hour being 19:XX, 22:XX etc.

However these are just my personal observations and may very well be wrong but i hoped that i helped out some people.

Edit: During Wrath of The Lichking this little trick was the shizzle since Dalaran was the idle-hub for both factions. Since the release of Cataclysm, Dalaran is practically desserted. The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery is still a fun vanity item, though.

Ever since I obtained The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery I've been teleporting to the tower whenever I want to log out for a while.

Completely lag free and easy way to log into Dalaran :D

In a bit of research on this, over two days. It turns out that the respawn rate is as short as 36 minutes, having personally timed it. I have also seen spawn rates of about 1.5 and 2 hours. Very boring work, but these times seemed to be quite random.

I literally ran in circles for hours on end to time this. The time it took me to check all spawn points was under two minutes. In past postings, the books stayed active for three minutes AFTER opened for reading, So, I shouldn't have missed ANY.

One thing is for certain...the rare books spawn FAR less then the fake ones. I've found well over 50 books and I'm still down 1. The Divination book has spawn 11 fakes for me since I started 4 days ago. FYI...the 3 minute despawn timer is accurate, I've checked it out twice on fake books, and so is the 2 books spawn at once theory. If you get to know the locations well, you and easily move to each in under 1.5 minutes....good luck! I'm almost there =)

The best time to get these books is immediately after your realm has come back up from maintenance etc.

Just did a run now my realm came back up and in every spot there was either a fake book or a real one. Much nicer than finding nothing :)
Roughly four real books appearing also so it would be a good score for someone starting this achievement.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I thought I'd add this in there. So far I've gotten this achievement twice and both times were on a difference server (Exodar and Underbog). In addition to the generic spawn time of 3 to 4 hours between clicks, I believe I've picked up a pattern.

Server restarts aside, it seems as if once a real book spawns, the next seven books that spawn in that spot will be fake. In other words, if you just missed the Violet Hold book (Illusion), then don't expect to see it again until the following day. Using this theory, I was able to actually predict when the last two books I needed would be real.

The catch? You still need to wait around to figure out the initial spawn times of the books and then check back in each time they spawn so you can click them and predict the next spawn. There is NO WAY to know when a real one spawned unless either you were there or someone else was. This is why I highly recommend either joining or forming your own bookclub channel.

I will say this, though. If you are absolutely determined to get this achievement in the shortest time possible, and CAN BE OBTAINED in roughly 24 hours so long as you are there to click a book (real or fake) as soon as it spawns so the timer can be reset.

Again, when a real book spawns, the next seven will be fake.

I don't want to read through 160 comments, so I don't know if it's already said, but as a priest, it is possible to peak into the room you teleport to with the quest reward. Simple enter the Violet Citadel, go through the portal on your right and type /tar Archmage Vargoth and you target the NPC who gives you the Kirin Tor Familiar when you completed this achievement. Mind Vision and you see a small room with a few bookcases and Archmage Vargoth inside that room. Funny sidenote, this NPC is not listed here on Wowhead.

I have now spent a total of 1 day 17 hours camping the spot for the Necromancy book during the course of 3 days. I have seen upwards to 10 fake books, but never a real one. In fact, I've seen 5 fake books in a row (just over three hour respawn) today. This is pretty ridiculous. If it were not my last book, I would give up.

I've been trying to get this achievement for the Critter mainly for the past couple days.

I've written down the time everytime I got a fake book and came back 3 hours later.

What I can confirm is the respawn time isn't exactly 3 hours, it's 3 hours and a half.
Everytime a book spawned, it was always 3 1/2 hour within that last 30 minutes.

Looking for my last book as we speak but hope this comes in handy for you fellow critter freaks out there. :)

One tip for everyone that wants to do this achievement..
the book will never despawn unless someone reads it, so i found out that the best time to find any of these books is to wake up a bit early and grab them in the morning while every one is sleeping.
worked for me perfectly :D

I remember these books being on a quite long respawn rotation back in OG wotlk.
Nowadays these books spawn every 30-60min(?) Way faster at least. You can get a 2-3 in a single day easily if you're just starting out.
Obviously it will slow down the more you already have read.
