When the Darting Hatchling darts into a random direction, it will continue sprinting until it gets into a certain distance from its owner. Its speed is always slightly faster than the owner's whether the player is mounted or not. Trying to keep up with it or letting him loose in enclosed spaces results in rather long darting sessions. :)

Every few minutes or so, this little guy will "dart" off in a random direction as if he had rocket boots on.

Just a note about his special: As others have noted, he occasionally runs away from you, leaving trails of dust. If you stand still, he returns after a few seconds. However, if you chase him, he keeps running, leaving trails of dust the whole time! I'm not sure if there's a time limit on how long he'll keep running if you chase him around, but I was chasing mine around for at least half a minute before I tripped up on something (I was in a town at the time). I believe he just keeps running until he's put some minimum distance between you and him -- if you can keep up with him, I imagine you could chase him all the way across Kalimdor (but do note that he does NOT keep running in a straight line).

PTR Notes (Build 10623):

Hatchlings: Leaping, Darting, Razormaw, and Ravasaur Hatchlings no longer drop from their associated rare creatures. Instead, there are now rare nests that spawn which contain these hatchlings. For example, the Leaping Hatchling can now be found in Takk’s Nest rather than as a drop from Takk the Leaper.

Personal Notes:

Both the nests and rare spawn raptors can be up at the same time.
Rare spawn raptors no longer drop the mini pets; they can only be obtained from the nests.
100% loot chance for the mini pets from nests.
Nests can only spawn near the location of the rare spawn raptors but not always in the same spot (almost certain).
Example: Dart's nest can only be found around the location where Dart spawns even if it's not in the same spot where it last spawned.
Nest spawn timer is about the same as rare spawn raptors on LIVE realms.

Submitted a pic to Wowhead but we'll see if they accept it =)

Confirming that the rare spawns and the nests are definitely not on the same timer: just killed Dart about 22 minutes ago on the off chance that it might still drop, have been riding around in the area scoping for nests since then and, well, nada so far.

Just got the Darting Hatchling and I agree with everyone else, he's adorable! ^.^

I went to the area specified by previous post a few times, didn't really camp the area just went there on my free time. Killed Dart twice, after I killed him today I made another round and his nest was by the northern most tree specified by other post (the one above the actual raptors' nest) and there it was.
Not sure if Dart being there has anything to do with the nest, the last time I killed him the nest wasn't there but there's no telling because someone could have gotten the nest and left Dart...

I came across this Nest today at 12:30pm Co-ord's 47 - 17 Just behind "Stinky" Ignatz." between two trees.

Just a regular looking nest nothing to catch your attention too much, when you mouse over, you get the "Cog" showing you can use / collect it etc.

EDIT: I am on Blade's Edge European realm. (just for record)

The location of the nest does move throughout the raptor area. I found it at the southern part of the island, to the right of the path, among debris around a tree. Not sure of the despawn time. I found Dart at the top of the area and looked for the nest then, gave up and did the escort quest with Stinky, then stopped back threw and found it after.

Man i have been here and staked out the area a few time, with no luck mind you, However today after completing a couple of quests in the general vicinity i was on my way back to the flight master when i thought what the hell ill go run through and see. Well bugga me dead there he was like a streak of orange leather. man am i glad i took the detour.

Ported to Theramore on my mage...decided to look for the hatchling...ran to spot, saw Dart coming running, killed him, then looked around for his nest....was about 20 paces N of where I killed him....just ran to look for the Leaping Hatchling....bam...nest was up as well, at 60, 92.....guess it was my lucky day

While farming the raptors for large fangs I noticed Dart running by. He was kind enough to drop the pet. Someone on Burning Legion is gonna make me hella rich.

Dang, I've killed this guy at least 10 times and the Daring Hatching ALWAYS drops. Killed him today after not seeing him for a LONG TIME and he dropped only a green armor item and some white trash. What the heck is up with that?

EDIT: Looks like the rare no longer drops the pet. You can find the Darting Hatching in a nearby nest. Weird.
