About the item's background (spoiler warning):

Algalon l'Observateur's planetary diagnostics result in one of two possible reply signals: Reply-Code Alpha, signalling 'All is well', and Reply-Code Omega, requesting planetary reorigination. If he is not stopped within one hour, his analysis confirms the Console de l'Archivum's calculations, which estimate the chance of Reply-Code Omega to be 99.99% (repeating, of course), finding partial corruption in the planet's life support systems, as well as complete corruption in most of the planet's defence mechanisms. When he is defeated, however, he rearranges the Reply-Code and leaves this item in his cache, because he lacks the strength to transmit it to the Pantheon himself. As Brann Barbe-de-bronze suggests, the Reply-Code should be brought to Rhonin in the Violet Citadel, from where it can be transmitted.

why that we'd try to stop that kind of a thing, is a hero thing. even if it's 99.9% chance of failure, real heroes still fight on anyway, come on its the law of the hero, fight on even against impossible odds.

I am sorry but you guys are wrong, a number definened as .999 (repeating infinitly) does not equal 1.

From now on ".999..." wil represent the number .999 (repeating infinitly).

You are crossing Integer math with Non-Integer Math. An Integer is a number with a finite number of digits. A non-integer is any number with an Infinite number of digits. What you were taught in grade school, and prolly high school was all Integer Math, and there are some different rules to non-integer math which you are not taking account of here.

Ok guys here is what you are doing wrong. 9x-9 != 9 ( "!=" means does not equal)

if x = .999...
then 9x-x = 8.999... When using non-integer math. Which you must use cause .999... is a non-integer.

We can see that this is true by using simple algebra to back it up.
9x-x = 8x = 8*.999...= 8.999...
x = 8.999.../8 = .999...
and thus x = .999... and not 1.

Another proof:
1/9 = 0.1111111111111....
Multiply by 9
9/9 = 0.9999999999999....
1 = 0.99999999999999...

The problem here is that Non-Integer .111... times 9 does equal 1
Where as only the Integer .111111111111 times 9 equals .999999999999

These are the rules and the way non-integer math works, for why it is this way, the math theory behind it, pleas ask any Pre-Calc or higher math professer and they can explain the details of the differnce between Integer and Non-Integer Math to you.

Funny, all this math for one simple fact.

If this was intended to be presented as 100%, it would have been presented as such. Instead it is implied to represent a minute amount of uncertainty in the answer. 99.999... indicates that the answer is uncertain, not that it is 100% certain. Mathematically 1 or 100 or 10000000000000 is irrelevant. This is a result of yes/no certainty, not mathematical progression.

Yet another case of the number crunchers attempting to squeeze everything into a finite formula.....

When you flip a light switch, do you have a 100% chance to see light, or is there a minute opportunity for some other result?
