Patch 5.2: Guide to Profession Changes
Many professions are getting big changes and additions in Patch 5.2. In this guide, we've broken down all the major changes to all the professions, including new vanity items, reagents, and crafted gear.
Schmiedekunst
has the most changes, but there's also a new "Fish of the Day" event, a new archaeology race, and many recipes covering ilvl 522 raid gear and ilvl 458 PvP armor.
We do have one sad announcement to make--
Pierre
, an Engineering pet, is
not coming in 5.2
. Previously he was included in the PTR Pet Journal and PTR characters got level 25 rare versions of him.
Archäologie
A new race is added in 5.2--the Mantid. There are eight common solves and two rare solves (
Himmelshäscher der Mantis
,
Schallimpulsgenerator
).
Mantid digsites can pop up normally on the map, or
Sonar für Mantisartefakte
can help things along.
There are seventeen new achievements--
Geschichte der Mantis
is the most notable.
Archäolog. Fragment (Mantis)
are used for the new Mantid solves, and
Mantis-Bernsplitter
are the keystones.

Mists of Pandaria: Black Market Auction House
Always wanted Tier 3 gear for transmog or never got
Al'ars Asche
to drop? You're in luck now, with the Black Market Auction House.
The BMAH was designed to be a fun type of gold sink--where rare items are periodically generated and placed on a special Auction House for players to bid on. Players cannot list items themselves; instead, they are generated by the server and "listed" by an in-game NPC. The AH is "run" by
Madame Goya
in
Die Verhüllte Treppe
, with
Furorion
nearby.
Rare mounts, vanity pets, TCG items, Tier 3 armor, and epic recipes will find their way to the Black Market Auction House, and more controversially,
heroic raid epics will also be available
. While not many items will be up per week, it does raise concerns that raiders will be forced to buy armor with gold to help progression, which will put an emphasis on gold farming and change the server culture and economy. There's also some ilvl 483 PvP items for sale as well.
Bids start in the - range and there is no buyout option. The sky is the limit when competing against other collectors for items.

4.3 PTR Coverage Roundup
It's been a busy week on the PTR for myself and Ashelia. Every day, we find dozens of new things to write about, turning our observations into epicly-long posts. Since there are so many new things, I've provided a roundup of our 4.3 PTR coverage so far--with all the information, perhaps you missed reading something the first time around!
4.3 Preliminary Guide: 3d Models, Items, Holiday Changes, and More
In our
very first overview to 4.3
, we went through the initial 1600 datamined items to make sense of it all. Among other things, we found numerous new mounts and pets, items that hinted at changes to holidays like
Helm des Sonnenwendfests
, new profession recipes, and many items related to the revamped Darkmoon Faire. We also listed numerous 3d models of NPCs, models, and weapons--as well as making a video of some of the new mount animations. Finally, we listed some of the radical class changes in 4.3, placing them next to Ghostcrawler's quotes on balance for an explanation.

4.3 Preliminary Guide: 3d Models, Items, Holiday Changes, and More
4.3 news is finally here and it's a dataminer's paradise. Perculia and myself have spent the past six and a half hours going through the
1600+ items
on Wowhead's PTR site and summed up our first impressions: what's new, what's cool, and what's useful. Below you'll find everything in this build; from epic gem stats, new vanity pets, and an explanation of preliminary item levels, this mini-guide should prove helpful if you hate database hunting. We've also highlighted some of the radical class changes, putting them next to Ghostcrawler's commentary from earlier today.
Oh, and we have some cool models to share--if you're into that sort of stuff.
One quick thing: take all of this with a grain of salt. This is the first build of this patch's PTR. It's messy, it's unforgiving, and it's definitely a few cards short of an entire Darkmoon Faire deck.

All of the ilevels are confusing, so let's break it down how this new gear is laid out.

Professions 201: A Guide to Collecting Recipes
Finding recipes is the mark of a dedicated collector--beyond dutifully ticking off achievements and diligently doing tasks simply for points. You are solely responsible for setting your collecting pace; the freedom can be frustrating at times, but exhilarating when you've finished a subset of recipes and feel like you've solved part of a large jigsaw puzzle, hunting down recipes from obscure instances and reputations. It's fun to chase down patterns across Azeroth, when so many achievements and quests are now straightforward. Plus, you may even find generous twinks willing to tip hundreds of gold for obscure recipes!
I began to collect recipes seriously during the dog-days of ICC. I rolled a priest to learn inscription techniques and tailoring patterns, as well as a deathknight to learn most blacksmithing. I began to care more about enchanting on my rogue, finished up most engineering schematics on my warlock, and hoped for transmute discoveries again on my alt rogue. For obscure reasons, Jewelcrafting and Leatherworking have never held a particular charm--perhaps it's because I rolled these professions purely for raid benefits and blithely unlearned them to pick up Tailoring and Engineering mounts.
It's been over a year, and
