Ion Hazzikostas on What Happens After Wrath of the Lich King Classic
28.04.2022 um 18:42
When asked what would happen after Wrath of the Lich King Classic during his
interview with Asmongold
, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas explained that the development team is looking to hear from the community on the topic and would even like to break down specifics, such as if there is a certain thing about Cataclysm that the Classic community doesn't like.
What do you think is going to happen, now that Wrath of the Lich King Classic is coming out. Obviously Wrath of the Lich King is going to run its course... then what?
At this point, we'd love to hear from you, from the community as a whole, what you want to come next. We have a playerbase that really has made Classic their home, many people have carried their characters from Classic into Burning Crusade and likely into Wrath beyond that. When that comes to an end, when you defeat the Lich King - Sorry, when you kill Halion, the ultimate end boss of Wrath of the Lich King, you can't forget Ruby Sanctum - do you want to start over? Do you want to try a different version of that? Do you want to carry that character forward into a new adventure?
I know Cataclysm for many people, "Oh, that's the beginning of the end, I'm out." But I'd ask an interesting question, what is it about Cataclysm that you don't like? Was it Heroic Dungeons? Was Firelands a bad raid? Was Twilight Highlands a bad zone? Was it LFR and Dungeon Finder from the start? Compressing the talent trees? What would it look like if we had Cata content with "some changes"?
One of the most hopeful possibilities from the community since the very beginning has been the dream of Classic
, the idea of entirely new content within the Classic world, deviating from the original timeline as if the Cataclysm expansion never happened. The biggest issue with this future for Classic is the amount of development time that would be required to make it a reality, which many players think isn't possible or even worse, some players think the current development team wouldn't be able to even
content that feels like it would fit for Classic. While this idea is quite pessimistic, the Classic development team has been updating
Season of Mastery's raid mechanics
, which has been received very well by a devoted Classic Vanilla community.
Starting Over with Seasons?
Whatever it is players want from the idea of Classic Plus, Season of Mastery is essentially delivering on this promise. And if you take a look at the
number of guilds clearing content on Season of Mastery
, it is a fraction of what it was during Classic. There are many reasons why this could be the case, such as players wanting to play Burning Crusade, players not happy with world buffs bring removed, or whatever... but could season two or season three be better? What about the first season after six months of the last phase of Wrath Classic? Could the future of Classic just be seasons moving from Vanilla to Wrath?
Moving into Cataclysm
It is no secret the number of subscriptions began to drop after Cataclysm's release, as shown in the graph below --
World of Warcraft Subscriber numbers timeline from
If Cataclysm Classic were to come out, Ion Hazzikostas straight up asks the community, "What are the things you didn't like?" Many of the questions posed by Ion offer some insight into the minds of the development team, looking for answers as a way to keep Classic feeling like Classic, even if it were to move on to the Cataclysm. Blizzard has already stated they have the intention of
removing Dungeon Finder from Wrath Classic
, which is something that the Classic community has been adamantly against since the very beginning. Could this philosophy continue onto Cataclysm and onward, removing the things that could have been a cause of the downward trend in subscriptions?
