I just wanted to say, I don't believe 1000 minions is a placeholder. Sindragosa is pretty deep withing Icecrown citadel, and this raid has trash (No! =[ ). Even if you don't kill 1000 in a single run, it is likely it won't take many runs to complete that requirement.

Hes calling it Shadows Edge. Seems to me this must be part of the quest to turn said item into Shadowmourne. There was a pic of what i assume is Shadow Edge here but now its gone.

Question is if you need to get the killing blow before it counts towards this quest, or if you just need to participate in the fight against the mob itself to make it count towards this quest.

I suppose it'd make most sense if you have to get the killing blow on the mob to make it count. The quest description kinda sets the scene for that

But then again, getting a thousand killing blows inside a raid instance sounds close to impossible. Unless of course the persons you're running with lets you get these killing blows on purpose. Or if there are TONS of mobs in there.

This would make it very hard to complete this quest, but in my opinion it shouldn't be easy to get a legendary weapon ;)

Some napkin maths.

Assuming each NPC killed by your raid counts towards the 1000, and assuming the trash before Marrowgar counts as "Lich King's minions"; you will get roughly 55 souls per trash run up to Marrowgar. That means 18 trash runs to finish this quest. At 25 minutes per run that's 6 hours of pure farming to finish this quest.

Damn .. might it be that you have to wield the weapon to have kills counted towards the questachivment?

I'm a tank .. and no DK .. I won't wield this one while grinding through ICC.

Warrior in our raid is getting credit from everything he deals damage to.

Including opposite faction NPCs before and during the Gunship event in our 10 man, after he got it.
When you deal damage to the mob it gets a debuff and you have to be alive when it is killed to get credit.

On 10 man, the infinite spawning trash, at the start of the instance that doesn't give reputation, was giving me credit towards the quest.

When attacking mobs in Icecrown Citadel, on 10 or 25man, this debuff appears on targets you have attacked, in any way, including taunts. The debuff has an unlimited duration, and merely fades when the target dies.

After it dies, a small shadowy bolt is sent to your character from the mob, similar to the effect of the legendary's proc. Hard to notice at first, but you'll see it on the last mob in each pull, most likely. Very cool.

Edit: I expect a hotfix VERY soon. This effect seems to work on LITERALLY any mob inside the instance. Web Wraps, Roaches, you name it, it works. It just needs to survive one attack in order for the debuff to apply, so critters can be taunted and then killed for quest credit. The souls of roaches do not a legendary make.

Edit again: Appears it was hotfixed. Only applies to mobs that give rep now. (As well as the opposite faction NPCs you kill on the way to the airship event.)

Got this last night. Here are a few pointers:

You do not need to get a killing blow to get the credit, just need to hit them once.
Shadow's Edge must be equipped and not just in your inventory. So don't go in as a tank and expect to get credit.
~~You even get credit for the 3 mobs that constantly respawn and attacks the NPC's in ICC, just hit them once, get away and let the NPC's kill them. So you can do them in your free time.~~
For the duration you are in ICC and acquiring souls, the Lich King random dialogues to you. They even have their own sound files

The zombies it spawns give rep, so I would guess they count towards the "soul meter". We will try this tonight and I will confirm/deny it then.

EDIT: It works on all mobs inside the instance. It even works on critters! About now, our death knight has 275 souls from critters (yes, he's THAT dedicated).

For this quest you have to kill 1000 scourge INSIDE of Icecrown Citadel, on either 10 or 25 man difficulty. However, should you have the quest for this, you may stand at the entrance and tag the mobs once they are hit by the guards. (I'm actually in the process of doing this method while typing this.) The best way to go about this method (that I know of) is to stand behind the guards as The Damned run into the room. Wait for the guards to tag them and then used a light ranged ability on them. Death knights use Icy Touch, Warriors can shoot their ranged weapon, and paladins can use Exorcism. The reason you want to use ranged abilities is The Damned do that bone flurry which is pretty nasty without healer, and when they die they blow up dealing over 8k damage on average.

Doing it this way takes a lot of time but you'll get upwards of 100-200 ghouls an hour.

I have shadow's edge and can confirm that summoned mobs like the zombies from the dogs or the adds in the deathwhisper fight do count towards the 1000 kills. Hell even marrowgare's spikes count. Did 10s after 25s last night and got 166 kills clearing up to putricide.

On this quest currently.

From what I can tell, you need to damage a mob in ICC with Shadow's Edge equipped, and you get credit when it dies.

Any damage works, and any mob works, even critters.

Possible to do this solo if you're patient enough - killing the critters around the base camp (there's 8 of them I think) and also damaging the waves of adds which sometimes attack the NPCs (said NPCs will finish them off, and you'll get credit if you even did 1 point of damage)

It'll always be in the back of your mind that the souls you fed your legendary axe were mostly rats though....

Being that people seem interested in critter farming, I'll point out two fairly obvious tactics:

1. Critters need to be alive long enough for the debuff to apply, which is about 1 second. Easiest way to do it is to taunt the critter (chains of ice or pestilence works\ well for DKs too) and then just melee it. My favorite method is chains of ice and then sending my pet to kill it while I run around looking for more.

2. Critters do respawn, and if your group is wiping on some of the new bosses, take the time to look for critters along the pathways when you're running back. Typically there's 2 or 3 every time you go back. Also, since critters do respawn, you can technically farm them all day, even if your group has killed some bosses already this week.

Also, this quest gives 350 Ashen Verdict rep along with the gold reward, so hopefully that gets added up top there soon.

Question or two about farming the critters and mobs that fight NPCs. I was able to do this and get credit at one point earlier tonight. I left that raid and took care of some business and since coming back to ICC I have not been able to reproduce the results. The only differences between the two raids were that the first raid, where I got credit for souls consistently, and the 2nd raid were that the first had 10 players in it, and 3-4 of them were in ICC with me at the time.
Does anyone know how to get the desired result of getting quest credit for killing critters and the mobs that attack spawn and instantly attack NPCs? What am I doing wrong?

During this quest Lich King keeps whispering to you about stealing the souls of his minions. Some of the whispers are shown at http://fromazeroth.blogspot.com/2010/01/shadows-edge.html

Also the mob you attack with the weapon gains a debuff called Shadow's fate and no, not all mobs your raid kills count towards 1000, but mobs YOU tag. On aoe situations some mobs did count, some did not, but most certainly I had to stay alive and not get bust by the sudden death.

Things I got no credit from were webs and horde at the ship. While random zombies and mobs before the ship battle did count (yet, they were 'horde's too). And while some say webs count for them, they did not count for me, nor do critters. Admitted I did attend 10 man raid as 25 man raid I am already locked out. Go figure why it was so. But regardless I got up to 120-ish when i went up to Putricide. With some grind or focus, the 1000 is not too difficult task to achieve.

Just finished my 1000 like 2 seconds ago and can confirm that Critters do still count.

Another spot that's really nice is the "trap room" right before Putricide. I got over 100 alone in there when we were bored and wanted to kill the trash for rep.

Also, to add to Kid's miniguide you can make a macro that targets all critters in the zone ( Roach, Black Rat, Spider, Plagued Insect, Frozen Insect, Blood Something ( can't remember the 2nd word, think it's Maggot ) and then have it /cast Chains of Ice. If you've got a PvP spec with Endless Winter in it, your chains will apply FF as well as Shadow's Fate and will then kill it a second later, granting you a soul while just running by. Whether farming critters is considered an exploit, however, remains to be seen.

: On a side note, I was fairly disappointed that there was no special whisper once you killed your 1000th person. I figured there'd be something special.

If your r10 and r25 is clean (so you haven't the zombies pop) you can also farm the rats in ICC.

One rush of rats takes 20min and gives you ~40 souls. At first you have to apply the debuff of SE with an attack who makes NO DOMAGE like Pestilence or Icy Chains for DK's and after you can kill the rat and drain his soul :D

Some random observations:

You must have Shadow's Edge equipped to gather souls.
You can only gather souls in ICC 10 or 25.
You don't need to get a killing blow.
A single full clear of The Plagueworks 10-man yields about 190 souls if you one-shot most bosses.
You need to be alive to gather souls.
You can "tag" bosses with Shadow's Edge then switch to a better weapon!

Just for clarification because I didn't know if it would work or not. Ret paladins can apply the debuff, Shadow's Fate, by using Consecration. So on a fight like Saurfang in which adds take reduced damage would give you 2 souls on 10 man and 4 on 25 per time they spawn.

It seems you have to "tag" the mobs that you want to drain souls from, I had to resort to thunderclapping to make sure every trash mob had the debuff.

Can anyone confirm whether or not adds during Deathwhisper, axe throwers / battle mages / rocketeers during gunship battle, small/big oozes during Rotface, and green/orange oozes during Putricide count?

Also, would the blood prince council count as 3 (assuming one were to hit each one at least once during the fight) or only one?

There's antoher Thing you can do if you are forced to tank:

Put on Shadowsedge do a cons and every mob that got damaged by that cons has now the debuff. You can switch back to sword and board and kill the mobs. Shadowbane will still consume the souls.

So you just have to hit the mobs with your Axe once. You don't have to have it equipped all the time.

Found that out today as I had to tank the icc 10 man.

I have noticed some unusual behavior with the soul gathering portion of the quest. It seems not all the mobs that I've been killing for souls are being counted toward the quest. I have double checked to see if the debuffs are being applied correctly, but certain packs, for example deatwhisper trash, that die in rapid succession to aoe damage do not all count toward the quest. Does it possibly have any additional requirements beyond putting the debuff on the mob? Anyone else noticing this?

You'll get souls from:
- each usual mob
- the spawning adds from Lady Deathwhisper
- the spawning adds from Valithria Dreamwalker
- the mobs from the two traps at The Plagueworks

You'll get NO souls from:
- for the 3 mobs that constantly respawn and attacks the NPC's in ICC (maybe changed since Funkymillah wrote it at 7th Jan. )
- the whole Gunship Battle (I guess it count's not as "in ICC" because you are at the ship)
- from Deathbringer Saurfang's Blood Beasts
- the Severed Essences
- Precious (Rotface's pet dog) zombies (:-()
- bugs, spiders etc. (including the bugs in Professor Putricide's trap)

You
- need not to hit the mobs - a Demoralizing Shout, Thunder Bluff, Consecration or Death and Decay will give the debuff to all valid targets in range too
- have to be alive at the death of the target to collect the soul
- may free your ghost and fly back from the bone yard into the ICC. As soon you reenter ICC every mob that will be killed by your raid mates and that you "marked" before will count for you, even if you stay idle at the entry (-> you should start every battle with f.e. a Demoralizing Shout and - if you die at trash - should rush back as fast as possible to get at least a few souls)

This quest is corrupting me. Everytime I go into ICC all I can think of is feeding my axe with SOULS, DELICIOUS SOULS. I can only imagine this is what Warlocks must feel like.

The ghouls/shamblers that the Lich King (10/25) spawns, don't count towards this quest.

Just so you can benchmark how long this quest till take:

"The The Lower Spire" grants around 70 souls
"The Plagueworks" grants around 25 souls
"The Crimson Hall" grants around 30 souls
"The Frostwing Halls" grants around 100 souls

In most encounters that spawns additional baddies during that fight (bosses, val'kyrs, etc), those new spawns do not have a soul. Dreamwalker appears to be an exception, and is a great encounter for those od us grinding up souls.

It might be worth noticing that when you perform a race change you will automatically disband this quest (not the entire chain, but this one). I am not sure why, but in my case the switch from undead to orc (for obvious reasons) set me back a couple of weeks in terms of gathering souls.

Apparently to get this, you only need to be during the fights either of trash mobs or bosses. They count as well...Easy way to get it done fast is to farm the first trash before Marrowgar, but the rest of Icc works well as well ^^
I havent yet tried the Lich King fight with it, to see if it also counts the raging spirits, the ghoulds, the horrors ect ect.

As of the current expansion (Dragonflight) = it's 50 souls now.
They are being counted wierd way, because I have Shadow's edge equipped, killing with melee or abilities does not count toward the quest, but... whenever you Charge (and one shot) any enemy - the will be counted :D

As of patch 10.2.5, the quest now only requires 50 souls. There is a bit of a bug though in which you have to "tag" each mob so they get the Shadow's Fate debuff BEFORE you kill them. This can be hard when you one shot everyone. As a warrior, using Charge and Challenging Shout adds this debuff. To add up the number quickly, use Challenging shout on large pulls as it has a longer cooldown, and Charge on single or ranged targets. Hope this helps :)
