The Boneguard Commander, the new element to contend with in this follow-up, is the only potentially frustrating mob to tackle, but became very manageable with the following approach:

Charge one of the commanders in the very back (south) end of the group, and immediately continue all the way up the stairs if you pull multiple mobs in the attempt. You'll exit combat, but not be in danger of losing the mount from exiting the questing area. Then you can reapproach from a safer position.

Once you've got his attention, slowly draw him up the stairs with you (to avoid the possibility of him pulling the other commander into the fray).

Keep him in melee range with three stacks of defend, and take advantage of shield breaker when he attempts to back away, then just keep pulling him slowly back with you.

Once he's isolated from the other commanders, lieutenants and those pesky scouts, he's no more difficult to defeat than any of the aspirants back at the tournament.

For the record, this version of the quest is specifically for Horde death knights. Unlike other characters, who receive their Champion dailies from the 银色北伐军, death knights work for the 黑锋骑士团. The other versions of the quest, which all share the same name, are:

Aside from faction and specific quest NPCs, the different versions are identical. The division makes sense in game, but it means strategies and comments end up spread across the Wowhead database. If the advice for this particular version doesn't work for you, you may want to take a look at the others.

For still more information, there's also the related daily "At The Enemy's Gates", which is the equivalent for Valiants. It too is divided into different quests, one for each city:

Keep in mind that as of 3.2, there is no overlap in mobs between the Champion and Valiant quests. Champions kill the , while Valiants kill the , , and . They're just in the same general area.

Unless you have an hour to spend trying to do this quest skip it. OR get up at 4am in the morning when the area doesn't look like an ant farm of players competing for 1 or 2 npc commanders.

Reason:
Spawns are over run by other players not willing to team work. Blizzard needs to make all players taking down the commander get credit, and increase the npc's health. Nor can you select a player on the mount and request group. True waste of time.

Side note: I was first hit on commander. Used the tactics contained in wowhead comments. Got the commander down to 75% horde player comes along charges him a few times and I don't get credit. True waste of time.

So for the last hour I have tried to group, tried to assist, tried to assault the commander to no avail. This is now a quest I will either get up to do when the area is clear of other players, or completely skip.

This quest may be cool for a medium or low pop but for high population server it completely sucks.

Just skip it its a time waster. I do feel neglected though as I will not gain rep or tokens at the same rate as other players willing to spend their entire online time on one silly quest.

It's not that bad. Keep your distance, and just juggle between Charges and Shield Breakers. He doesn't reapply his Defends too quickly so once you hack him down the damage builds up fast. I pull from the side of the path and it usually works out pretty well.

Like all the tournament quests be prepared for:

Your Shield Breaker to not fire even though you're mashing the button.
The game to "lag" 2 or 3 moves behind the actual fight so you'll see your shield go from green to yellow to red to nothing in a split second after it catches up to the Shield Breaker and charge combo you didn't see that apparently happened 3-5 seconds ago
You will agro about 3-4 scouts while you fight the Commander, who you will have to run very far away from to break agro with.

As it seems with all the new special kinds of dailies like this introduced since WoTLK it's broken. From the airplane dailies in Icecrown that were bugged from day 1 to the giant daily in Zul'Drak that was bugged when you grabbed a heal that didn't heal, Blizz doesn't seem to have a good track record at actually making this stuff work. Which is a shame.

Just throwing this out there... If you're a hunter, make sure you don't have on Aspect of the Viper. O_o I didn't think those abilities affected you when you were fighting with a lance, but they do...they do.

Note that you can use Thrust on scouts who don't fly too high if you jump at the right time. Makes the killing of scouts really quick since Thrust and Shield Breaker don't share the same cooldown.

I've been jousting through the Dailes since they were released, I still don't bother with these two however. A pain in the ass and a sure indication of why Blizzard should just leave Vehicles to Games/Companies that can do them right.
If you don't mind taking a little longer to get Valiant or Champion badges then avoid these and save time.

Yshtovaur has the right of it-- getting the Boneguard commander alone is crucial if you're on your own-- but you may find it easier to lure him back to camp. He WILL follow you if you hit him from time to time and don't get too far ahead... actually, getting away from him is usually more difficult. I usually fight him just behind camp.

Charge is your best friend: catch him with his pants down, and you'll be grinding him under your hooves in short order.

If you're losing, you can run to the stables, jump off your horse, and jump on a new one. This resets your enemies-- he'll ride back and you can try again.

Of course, the fastest way is still to NOT do it alone. Even if the only other person on the field is from the other faction, it's worth helping them out... sometimes they return the favour.

And confirming koberius' tip: if you ride up close to scout, throw a shield breaker, then jump and thrust, you can often kill them BEFORE they manage to take down one of your shields, which is the main problem with them. Don't try this on high fliers, but low and mid range ones go down easy.
