These rock for grinding 41-45. They have very low health (1500ish), pathetic damage (100 damage fireballs with a long cast), and are spaced out enough to pace yourself but close enough to keep the exp flowing nicely. Since they are 40+ they can also drop epics, skin into worn dragonscales (rarely), and perhaps bets of all drop a whelp pet. I prefer grinding the south side of the canyon and staying on one side (north of south) rather than running between them since there are 45+ elites in the middle. As a decent geared rogue at 42 I was getting about 25k an hour grinding. Boring as hell, but well worth it!

These little fellows drop small flame sacs, which are an ingredient of Dragonbreath Chili (among other things). As asaphelps stated, they're well situated for farming. In addition to the bonus if you're a skinner, if you're a miner, you will also find a large number of mithril and truesilver veins in the area, with occasional gold and silver thrown in for good measure. Just be careful of the elites in the central valley if your character is under 50 or so.

Should also be noted that they are very resistant to fire, so if you are a fire mage, you should (you dont have to, but it makes it much easier) use Frostbolt or Arcane Missiles.

I grinded these thinds for 2 hours looking for the dark whelp and never got it,but i did get about 9 greens that AHed good.I was a 63 MM hunter after the 3.0.2 patch so it was realy easy to kill these things

I've been working on farming the Whelps since I got my copy of WotLK Collector's Edition reserved. That said, this has been thus far the most enjoyable grind for the whelp. I've got the Emerald and Crimson whelps, Crimson is a huge "circuit" with several which don't even drop the pet, and the Emeralds you have to farm the few there are (half of which don't drop it), log to another toon for 10-15 minutes then come back and try again.

These guys are in two easy to farm groups separated by a big open area full of elite dragons (in the badlands). The group to the north has 18 and the group to the south has 14. As a holy pally it takes me about 10 minutes to clear both the north and the south groups. By the time I finish the south section the north has respawned so it's very easy to run back and forth farming with no interruptions other than running across the area with the elite dragons.

They drop mostly Forked Tongue, Ripped Wing Webbing, Small Flame Sac and occasionally Wicked Claw or green drop. The reason I say this is that on average every 2.5 circuits or so (north three times and south twice or vice-versa) you will fill a 16 slot bag, so plan to throw a lot of stuff away or bring several empty bags. I made about 3-4g on money drops over 5 circuits, and then another 4g selling everything they dropped to a vendor, so you stand to make as much as 1.6g per circuit.

*EDIT* On 11/10 from 12:00 pm cst - 10:06pm cst I farmed a combined total of 7:16 - completing 43 circuits, and 6 minutes into my 44th circuit I finally got my whelp (and that's not counting the 3 hours I spent farming and getting the information for the first part of this post). In that span and the three hours spent prior to this post I farmed very close to 2000 whelps (1952 to be exact...whats another 48?). While farming, Mr. Pinchy came off cooldown and I was lucky enough to get Magical Crawdad which also just happened to be my 50th pet... so even though my luck was crappy on the whelps, I won on other fronts.

Also worth noting the 10 minute time frame per circuit was near perfect. Any faster and they hadn't finished spawning at the top and I would have to do a double circle in each section, any slower and you're wasting time. Try and pace yourself for 10 minutes per circuit and you'll get maximum efficiency.

Well, after 15ish hours grinding these guys - full lvl range - l got the whelp and an epic (go figure) in the time range of about an hour. he's WELL worth the effort, although l'll admit l'm burned out on grinding pets for a day or so. will be uploading a screenie in a moment or two hopefully.

As a level 50 hunter, I was able to set up a nice circuit on the northern half. Do them all in a circle and by the time I'd finished killing the last, the first had respawned. So far I've killed 92, and gotten one blue drop ( no greens though).

it took me about 6-8 hours to get the dark whelpling to drop. Its a really easy grind for a high level character, the only thing you will really need is a lot of patience

As rare as it is, it IS possible to get a {Dark Welpling}. I killed about 10 before it droped. Within 4 hrs. I went back and got another one so it IS possible ^_^

Finally got my Dark Whelpling literally 30 seconds before server shutdown this morning! i had a hunch that if i just kept killing right up to the shutdown it would drop! Last kill, 30 seconds, dropped! Keep grinding guys! maybe try out my strategy! ;)

P.S. I am lucky # 227 out of 226072 =P

Edit: i was only farming for the last 45 minutes up to server shutdown....

and when you give up after killing oh, 3,561 , head to your local AH and buy one , or, settle for a 50s pet from your local pet vendor ^_^

the best tip i can give when farming these little guys is to stay positve, and bring lots of water is you use mana.

I remember desperately trying to get a whelpling on my first char, as a warrior it was alright to farm, just took a little damage and had to interrupt their spells. Killed about 2000+ and levelled 3 times. I finally got one one day and accidently aggrod another while I was looting it, killed that one and another dropped lol. Sold one kept the other.

Now my hunter is lv40 I have started grinding these again, I can say its much much easier, I can kill one while my pet does at the same time.

Im the GM of the Korialstrasz (realm) guild 'The Unforgiving' and its awesome because my #1 got one, put it in AH for like 150g and it sold in 5 minutes... if only i had that much gold...

LOL! I thought it said they were in the *Blasted Lands*, five deaths to lvl 50-60 mobs later I double-checked the map, and now I just need to find a way out of this area w/o spirit rezzing.

Guys! Don't get disappointed if nothing drops for a long time for you. Most of the people that post on here are the ones that HAVE got something like a whelp or an epic purple item. Consider how many people have tried and failed at getting these. You just happen to be one of the very large majority. As for green drops, keep grinding and surely you'll get one. I got 3 greens out of 5 consecutive drops before, so it's not impossible. As for me, I've been killing these guys for 2 levels now. Still no whelp. Lot's of greens, and one blue. I'm not gonna stop though. Btw, I hope no one is coming into this area EXPECTING to eventually get something so specific like the "Bow of Searing Arrows". Don't forget, this is an epic after all. And just getting ANY epic item is EXTREMELY rare, let alone the one you want. The whelp on the other hand, this is much more feasible for anyone to acquire. Don't give up and you should see one before leveling 3 times. Of course, it is random, so it may take longer. But please, stay persistent and good luck to all!

i got one of these while doing a quest didnt even know they dropped these :/ and when it dropped i got a glitch and another whelping attacked me but then i got it and died and was planning on summoning it until i saw price on auctioneer :)

Well after killing these things since lvl 38...im lvl 44 now...i have gotten around at least 20 green drops.....5 blue drops and....one epic ring...all together made at least 200g but thats not including the money drops from them i must of gotten about 5og from that....and i got the whelpling to...but it suxs because on my server they sell for 50g but thats still good isnt....just try real hard and you will get lots of things from these guys....oh and i made at least 50-75g off of leather.....altogether about 350g $$

LOL I was farming small flame sacs off the welps passed the elite dragpns up in that corner and after killing about 10 - 15 of them a dark whelpling dropped for me. I almost was tempted to sell it however, I couldnt resist once I saw on thott what it looked like, so i equipped it! I LOVE it! hahaha! My Fire mage looks cool running around with it lol. I am gonna come back later to see if i get another one - the next one is for sale.

Me and a partner both got whelps within like 10 minutes of each other. I remember she goes, "I want to stay and get one for my husband." And I was like, "I've been killing these things for 2 levels and these are the ONLY time I've seen them drop." I sold mine I think for 90 gold, because I wanted a quick sell.

BTW, I'm the one (among others, I'm sure) that makes Mithril show up as a drop for these. As a warlock, I target the whelp, send pet in, throw on a few dots, and mine a mitril deposit. So Thottbot thinks the whelp is dropping it.

Well i've only killed about 800 still not even a blue so i'm pretty upset but i've gained massive exp and a ton of money fro skinning so i'm still gunna stick with it until i get my little dark whelp, sense i am the only one on my entire server farming for one ever and there is none in AH sense i started my toon i'm gunna be a rich man when i get it.

Well after being sick on a snowday yesterday with 103 fever, and developing strep this morning I have not been good. But just aobut an hour ago I got lucky and got a blue off a bugged mob, made me happy. Now even more luck, farming Worn Dragonscales for leggings from dragonscale leatherworking and I get the pet! I hope it's still worth a lot of money, even after Burning Crusade

Okay, the first time I found out about these pets... Was because I landed one on my THIRD kill, on my lvl 47 &*!@#$%. Now, My Hunter, Druid, and Paladin are Lvl 70, I have a 53 Rogue, and a 48 Lock, and I'm grinding one for my Lock. But I've grinded them all through my lvl 40's, on all my toons... (After Hunter of course) So that's "40 levels" of grinding right there. Don't give up folks. I'm not gunna.

Finally got the Dark Whelpling drop at around 600 kills. If you're trying to get one, stick with it and don't give up! They can drop at any given moment at any given kill. I know I was definitely tempted to give in many times, but it was worth it. Try passing the time by chatting with your guild, as killing the Whelps doesn't have to be too involved.

You'll be glad you did when the AH check comes in after selling your hard earned drop - or the satisfaction of walking around with a hard to get pet like I am =D

I was lvl 42 and decided I wanted a cool mini-pet...I wanted a whelpling and realised that i could kill two birds with one stone...I decided to farm these and it took me 600 or so kills...it took over 5000 arrow and i got almost 2 lvls

I had to go to Ironforge once for more arrows and repairs ect. I was going to go to Thelsamar but no high lvl arrows >.<

Just keep at it...DON'T GIVE UP!

Had the Azure Whelpling in about 20 mins, about 40 kills.
So today I went for the Dark Whelpling and it dropped after 478 kills!
Non stop killing for about 4 hours.
Now heading for the Emerald Whelpling and Crimson Whelpling :D

Not gonna give up on these untill I have em all!

And you all shouldn't give up either, you'll get them!
I'm sure of that!

I did this pretty quickly i got it on my 300th kill. You know how the scorching guardians r in the middle of the place? i covered one half of it and my friend covered the other part. i won it on a need roll 98 to 16 talk about luck!

well i spent about an hour tonight. went 6 or 7 circuits around. no drop yet. I estimate about 300-400 kills based off of gray drops. No Pet. This is a long haul farm.

Dark Whelpling is on going at over 2000 kills.

I don't have the kill counter, but I estimate it was about at 400 kills when i thought: "how long is this going to take?", so I looked at all these comments, where some people are talking about 2000-3000 kills. Then I thought: "okay, forget it, I'm not going to try this anymore, so I went back to WoW to use my heartstone, but im i'm being attacked by a whelp that spawned right in front of me. Killed it, and it dropped immediately! It seems these comments help a lot! :)

That was most definately the best thing ever. I was farming for about 3 and half hours... maybe 3 or 400 kills... and then this alliance Death Knight (I'm Horde) came out nowhere, killed my pet, then killed the Whelp I was attacking, waved, and went on...

I looted the Whelp... got the Whelpling! I nearly died. I chased the Death Knight and hugged her and cheered and all kinds of things. She figured out why, and slapped herself. *laughs*

I just farmed for about 3 hours today and got it after killing about 400 of them. It wasn't too difficult since I was alone and didn't waste too much time. Of course since it's my first one I plan on using it as MY companion. :P

I plan on going back of course.

I spent about 2 hrs killing them, must have gone through a few hundred. I got a staff of jordan, and the silencer before finally getting it. I came back a few days later and got it on my first try

Ah wtf. When I farmed these lil buggers for Dragonscales, (you can imagine how many I need) I got NO blue loot NO purple loot. and only 3 greens. All that was 3 weeks of farming. Thats bad.

Drops dont just come to you. Even if something is a 1-100 chance there is the possibility you could kill 1000000 whelps and not get the item you want. It's very simple: patience. If you just stick to what you're doing for a couple of days you'll go back with a few 100g. These guys are just waiting to give you enough cash that even a Tauren can roll in. On my first day of grinding I only got a couple greens. The next day me and a friend went I got a whelpling and fiery war axe. The next day nothing. The day after that another whelping and a few blues. Just be patient. If anyone is in rexxar and wants to come grind these with me I'd love some company. I'm trying to get up to 1000g by lvl 50. A hard goal to reach=)

I was able to get 2x Dark Whelplings to drop in about 10 mins of each other. I have been grinding here for lvls 42-44 and will be here till I hit 45, so the chances of getting another are fairly decent I think. I would imagine I have killed ~600+.

Took 20, got dark whelping. I have killed exactly 288 now. So far, dark whelping in the first 20. Two greens, then my first blue, Skystriker. So far, half of a level, only a couple of greens. I have been wondering though. I have been skinning each one, but no dragon scales yet.

I've been grinding XP in the Badlands lately. Got tired of only small flame sacks dropping or forked tongues, so I was off to kill stone elementals, when one spawned at the entrance to Lathlor Ravine, jump of my mount, kill it and get a Dazzling Longsword. Let's hope it sells. And if you're on Anvilmar alliance side just send a tell. (the name's Talisien on the server)

I farmed and farmed for 2 whole days.. "You receive loot: Dark Whelpling"..

My fríend logged to my char, apparently vendored it and when I logged back in I just couldn't found it. I totally freaked out - I have a hard decision whether to kill myself or him.

Have gone through these multiple times. I have gotten a dark whelp, a dazzling longsword (purple), a necklace of Calisea (blue) and a few greens. All in all they helped me level up from 43 to 46 with ease and a good gold earning from the auction house. The Dazzling Longsword and the necklace of Calisea are currently for sale in the AH.

Loot received:

- Dark Whelpling x2
- Staff of Jordan
- Ogron's Sash
- Aquamarine
- Grey items.

With this luck I wish I was in Silithus for higher level epex. :)

I used my hunter to try and get one of the infamous whelps. I started level 32 in the SoS, now level 46 and in Badlands. Countless greens, and one blue. No luck on the whelp so far...
Good news is I find the scales all the time.

Dropped Embossed Plate Pauldrons of Stamina.

Level 41 pally, flying through these things with 0 Downtime thanks to Seal of Wisdom.

Well, i went their today just to birng me level up a bit, i heard good things bout these things (good drops and exp) and half an hour into it, mustve killed i dunno, about 60, a khoos point and about 4 greens, hope to get an epic soon :D

I have been killing whelps for 5 hrs on my lvl 42-44 hunter. There are 2 routes to farm these whelps. The upper farm and the lower farm. The upper farm got the most spawn points, but also the most clusters of whelps (2-3 aggroes at once). The lower farm got the least spawn points, but they are evenly spread out, with no clusters. At higher lvl the upper farm is best, because you don't care about the dmg, but at lvl 40-42 its near impossible to take on 2-3 whelps, and therefore the lower farm is better. My loot from 5 hrs killing with skinning is:

61 Small Flame Sacs
3 Dark Whelplings
295 thick leathers
279 heavy leather
8 Thick Hide
7 Worn Dragonscale
5 Heavy Hide
230 Ripped Wing Webbings
154 Forked Tongues
4 greens (nothing special)

On my server - Firemaw - this farm gives me 36g from white drops, 6g from skinning and 2g from greys and greens each hour. I also get 20-30k xp each hour.

If you are here to farm the "Small Flame Sacs" from the Scalding Whelps, just want to inform you that Blizzard has seriously nerfed the drop rate. So be prepared to spend a long time trying to get one to drop. Unless you are very lucky of course.

Just killed my 1000'th whelp. Still no whelpling. I'm starting to question whether it was removed from the loot tables in anniversary.
