Well, it could be a very good caster staff in general if you also noticed the new weapon enchant for staves (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=62948). And if you are a JC, you can fill the blue sockets with 32 spellpower gems also (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=42144)

im just slightly confused at the mass of minus ratings.

Since you have all the thotbott rejects that still do not understand that new gear itemisation is not as class specific as it was before.
I used to love wowhead when thottbot was at its peak, because I would always find exactly what I came for without having to go through 100 'hunter weapon' posts. But sadly now that thott is on the verge of shutting down, we are seeing all that here.

*Edit: with the 2 JC gems and the new enchant, this staff will have an insane 741 SP!

Hearing that this drops from 25-man Hodir, I would imagine that this stave would be drop from a hard mode version of the encounter seeing as it has such a high ilevel.
In the encounter, Hodir will have several loot chests that he will shatter as time goes by - so I suppose if you manage to muster up some strong DPS and reduce his health to 0 (or 1, cant remember which) before he shatters the first chest, then you'll have acess to the best loot.

Edit: according to mmo-champion Ive been persuaded into thinking he now only has 1 extra loot chest. Also - this is a more accurate pic of what it looks like.

That staff is really interesting but there'll be some 1h+oh combo to beat it anyway. :( I was going to wait for it but I got my Turning Tide last week. :)

This staff is perfect for anyone using the Chaotic Skyflare Meta gem, as you can put your two blue gems needed for it and get the 9 sp bonus, while putting other/better gems into your other sockets.

Using 2/3 of your JC gems for a 9 SP socket bonus is probably not going to be worth it (e.g. Collar of the Wyrmhunter has a 9 SP socket bonus for only 1 blue gem). This is one circumstance where I would ignore the blue sockets and just gem Runed Scarlet Rubies.

Though that's true, I suggest going for the socket bonus on this. In a druid, priest, or possibly even a Warlock's case you could socket Spellpower + Spirit (Purified Twilight Opal) gems in these for the extra secondary stats, and only lose about 9 spellpower compared to using 2 Runed Scarlet Rubies.

Although i don't know about priests or druids, i can say that as a warlock with both demonic aegis for fel armor and the glyph of life tap, i would say that i'd have to agree about using 2 purified twilight opals over 2 runed scarlet rubies, because you'd only lose 11 pure spellpower from the gems, however, considering the glyph and talent mentioned before, I get 59% spirit converted into spellpower so that's 9.44 extra leaving me with only 1.56 spellpower loss (effectively 1 or 2 depending on my remaining spirit) for a 16 spirit gain which means that i get 48 more mana whenever i use life tap.
A fair tradeoff if you ask me.

Of course i could see any other class or even warlocks not using demonic aegis and/or the glyph use 2 runed scarlet rubies for obvious reasons.

bare in mind that doing this can activate your meta gem, and should only ever be considered if you can still OOM even if you life tap every 20 seconds, otherwise using 2 runed scarlet rubies is obviously better.

I dont get it, your logic is just plain wrong, i mean u did your calculation, and its a 1.56 spellpower loss. So, if it is a sp loss, it is a sp loss, plain and simple. You, as all dps should gear and gem thinking at maximum u can get.

Ah, and what? You will Life Tap every 20 second for the spellpower bonus, or what? Dont thinks so, it would be a major dps loss, 1 GCD every 20 sec. Please weighten your calculations, like 1 life tap /minute, 20% / 3 is 6.66% in the long run, so its not 59% spirit converted into spellpower, maybe 45.66.

And u see, now its not 1.56 spellpower loss, its more then that.

Edit: oh, and from a shadowpriest PoV, 2 runed scarlet rubie is the way to go, no question about it. And it is the new BiS for us.

Also, this item is what it is, but i dont understand why Blizzard made it with blue sockets... they are only 4 blue gem types, Spell Pen, Mana/5, Stamina and Spirit - and only spirit has a little use for dps classes. Red slots would be much more usefull, i say.

Same thing with the CSD, meta trough. Maybe it is intended to free all that red sockets and the socket bonuses from tear 8.5 gear for red/yellow gems? As i see, only the chest has blue sokets.

So what you are saying here is that Blizz are idiots because they did not add Spell Power slots to an item that has the highest Spell Power atm?
IMO you should recommend they make them yellow to add more crit to it.

This is a big step for Blizzard. MH+OH combo has been beating staves for a while now. This thing is quite possibly better in some regards than the best MH+OH combo or at least equal. The new 81 spell power staff enchant also shows that Blizzard is finally trying to make it a choice between staves or MH+OH instead of a clear cut winner. This is a very good thing.

This Staff will most likely give much more INT and Crit than any MH+OH and possibly more spell power. The only 1H healing mace with ilvl 239 that I have seen is the legendary. 1H's with ilvl 226 usually have 520 spell power in which case the OH would have to have at least 67 spell power on it. This staff is going to be hard to beat.

undoubtedly this is the best weapon for any balance druid and certainly an excellent staff for any caster class, for a balance druid this provides app. 800 dps when gemmed correctly, assuming the moonkin is using a lunar eclipse based rotation, however i cannot say the dps for a solar rotation.

in other words if u r a boomkin... YOU WANTS THIS!
