Someone mentioned in the Damnation comments that 213 ilvl items should have 461 spell power (200 ilvl items are the ones with 408). I guess this staff suffers from the same error.

I "would" say this is greatly suitable for a mage.
As seen from the T7 mage set, hit rating gained from it is extremely low, and has to be comphesated with trinkets/rings/gems.

The lack of spirit/mp5 just makes it less suitable for healer classes.

According to Blizzard, it is an error. This staff (and Damnation) have both been changed to 461 spell power on the test server (0.0.8).

Edit: All other stats remain untouched, only change is the spell power.

It's pretty asinine to say that this item beats out a mainhand/offhand combo when enchanted with spell power. That implies that a mainhand can't be enchanted as well, which is certainly not true.

The ilevel on this item is 213. So to be fair, we should compare it to an ilevel 213 mainhand and ilevel 213 offhand. But, it should also be compared against what is obtainable. It goes without saying that Kel'Thuzad in 25-man Naxxramas is far more easily killed than Malygos 25-man. (Hence why 10-man Malygos drops 213, 25-man drops 226.)

The Turning Tide grouped with Surplus Limb nets you:

91 Stamina, 88 Intellect, 32 hit, 37 crit, 89 haste, and a ridiculous 585 spell power.

Greatstaff of the Nexus has 10 more Stamina, 11 less Intellect, 63 more hit, 37 less crit, 15 less haste, and 124 less spell power. Even if you were to downgrade to Life and Death (an ilevel 213 item), Nexus would have only 4 more Stamina, 5 less Intellect, 63 more hit, 42 less crit, 34 less haste, and 65 less spell power. (This is assuming Greatstaff is changed to 461 Spell power.)

What does this mean? For mages, and arguably for Warlocks and Shadow priests, there is far too much hit on this item, and far too less spell power to make this staff out-perform against a mainhand/offhand. However, this is in line with how it has always been. Staffs (staves, if you want) have never been better than their mainhand/offhand counterparts:

Grand Magister's Staff of Torrents vs Sunflare + Chronicle of Dark Secrets. (Heart of the Pit is itemized horribly and is actually far worse than Chronicle)

Zhar'doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer vs Tempest of Chaos + Chronicle of Dark Secrets.

Think about it this way: at lower ilevels, you have less stats to throw around on items. You only need X amount of hit to reach the cap. As ilevel increases, the amount of hit on items increases. By example, if an ilevel 200 item has 30 hit, and an ilevel 213 item has 45 hit, then if that happens over 10 items, your hit has increased by 150. In that situation, 90 hit on one item isn't so grand anymore. It's far better to get hit (a very expensive stat) from multiple items than get a ton of it from one item.

I got this yesterday on my resto druid from 8 player Maly (for the achievement). Since noone from the casters in the group wanted it I took it for balance offspec, mainly because my balance offspec set doesn't include any +hit gear yet. The staff graphics look really nice as well.

Now today I compaired it with the other ilvl 200 and ilvl 213 staves here on WoWhead and with the default weight scale preset for druids (where hit scores really high) this staff comes out as the best balance druid staff. And that is even with the bugged 408 spellpower, next patch it will be fixed and become 461 spellpower.

Is this in fact the best balance druid weapon currently in game? Or is there a better mainhand/offhand combination available? Let's compaire!

Greatstaff of the Nexus : The 408 spellpower version scores 35054 points. If you calculate it with 461 spellpower (35054 + 53 * 46) it becomes 37492 points.

The best mainhand offhand combination I could find is :

Torch of Holy Fire scores 27627 points.
Surplus Limb scores 9064 points.
Mainhand + Offhand together scores 27627 + 9064 = 36691 points.

So the (fixed) Greatstaff scores just a little higher than the MH+OH combo. On top of that the Torch of Holy Fire is probably wanted by every healer in the 25 player raid and therefore I'd consider it hard to get.

On the other hand, 461 spellpower from weapons compaired against 520 + 65 = 585 sure is quite a difference as well. That's a 124 spellpower difference.

My gutt feeling tells me the MH+OH combo is better and that the weight scale for balance druids favors hit rating just a bit too much compaired to spellpower.

Well it also depends how you want to cap with hit. You need 17% to cap on 25p raid bosses and those 17% can come from multiple resources :

* 4% can come from the Balance of Power talent (BoP).
* 3% can come from Improved Faerie Fire (IFF) or from a shadow priest with Misery.
* 1% can come from a Dranei in your group within 30 yards range but that's too unreliable to count on.
* You can get +40 hit from food as well although its a bit expensive and you probably prefer a Great Feast or else +46 spellpower food.

For a druid like me who mainly has a good resto set but a weak pure balance set, hit is the obvious big problem initially. I think I should first focus on going for all the hit I can get. That means 2/2 BoP, 3/3 IFF, the +40 hit food and then whatever I have from gear (currently that's 4.77% from this staff and the 10m quest neck from Sapphiron).

But once you get to the hit cap there are a couple of options. Of course first drop the food dependancy. :) But after that you could keep the talents and have fewer +hit from gear. Or you could just continue to collect +hit gear and for example remove IFF entirely. IFF wastes a GCD every 40s and it's a talent I wouldn't mind getting rid off and spend those 3 points elsewhere. BoP is better with it's 2% hit per talent point (where IFF is only 1%) but if you really want those talent points elsewhere, it's a possibility to go very high on +hit from your gear.

In the end, I think the ideal situation would be to have 2/2 BoP but no IFF at all. And you collect 2 sets of gear. The first set has +10% hit from gear and you use it when you have a Shadow Priest in your raid. The second set has +13% hit from gear and you use it when you don't have a shadow Priest in the raid. Actually having this Greatstaff of the Nexus (with its 3.62% hit @ 80) as the only difference between these sets is ideal since it's swappable in combat. That means if your shadow priest dies, you can swap to this weapon and stay hit capped. That's all assuming you don't talent for IFF like I prefer once I have enough +hit gear.

You are forgetting that the soulblade drops from 10 man naxx, from KT, and if you are able to kill malygos you are able to kill 10 man KT.

So you should really be comparing The Soulblade and Ward of the Violet Citadel.

Moonkins have a multitude of gear available that have +hit as long as you include cloth as an option. Don't discount cloth because its not leather. Many of the highest dps items available are cloth.

I got kicked from a guild for rolling on this on my warlock when there was a druid in the group. sick amounts of haste,hit and spell power so it's ideal for an affliction lock.

just to clarify:
it does have druid atk power and druids should feel free to roll on this.
BUT it is perfectly fine for any caster to roll on this (admittedly, lack of crit and more hit means dps > healer in this case)

I can't help but feel that story is a lie... any guild that would kick a lock out rolling on this is stupid, the stats are fine for a warlock, and if they care so much why do they run malgos 10 (not an easy raid!) without master looter.
I don't know whats sadder if its true or if you made it up.

I picked this up in my first 10-man Malygos run at the cost of 55 spellpower (previously was using Titansteel Guardian and Ward of the Violet Citadel). The spellpower drop is significant, but the huge Hit and Haste increases in my opinion make up for it, especially since I'm not hit-capped.

Really that's where the staff is going to find it's use-- in shoring up Hit/Haste ratings as a trade-off for spellpower. This isn't such a bad thing, since it gives you the option of gearing for more spellpower on the rest of your gear (it provides about a third of the hit rating that I need as a Balance Druid).

In a hit-capped scenario, this item won't have much worth. It's in building up to that scenario that players will find it useful.

I replaced my Grieving Spellblade and Ward of the Violet Citadel with this staff last week.

This main/offhand combination has:

74 Intellect
38 Hit Rating
62 Critical Strike Rating
27 Haste Rating
468 Spellpower

Vs The staff with

77 Intellect
95 Hit Rating
104 Haste Rating
461 Spellpower

I figured out it is better for arcane spec, cause u need to be stacking haste with that. I used to be frostfire, so the 62 crit rating on the weapon was nice, but with arcane i rather have the 77 more haste. Basically im losing 1,34% crit, but gaining 2,34% haste. And because this weapon also has a lot more hit, i could replace 3 16 hit gems for 16 haste gems, which will boost my dps even more. I will lose 7 spellpower though, but with the ability to enchant 2H weapons with spellpower in 3.1, that doesnt really matter.
