This guide provides tips and strategies for defeating the Twin Val'kyr boss encounter in Trial of the Crusader, for both 10-player and 25-player raids and Normal or Heroic difficulty. Twin Val'kyr Strategy for Trial of the Crusader in Wrath of the Lich King Classic

In the
Twin Val'kyr
encounter, you will be fighting the val'kyr
(Light) and
(Dark) together. They share the same health pool and abilities, only with a different element since the abilities from the
Light
val'kyr Fjola deal
fire damage
, while the
Dark
val'kyr Eydis deals
shadow damage
.
The list of mechanics taking place in this encounter may seem overwhelming at first glance, but in truth, it's a rather simple encounter with the right strategy. However, before getting into the two most popular ways to approach the fight, we must go over the val'kyr's abilities so it all makes sense in the end.
The Mechanics
Essence Auras
A few seconds before
and
enter the arena, 4 portals will appear.
The 2
Light Portals
grant the
光明精粹
aura, which makes you immune to "Light" (fire) damage and doubles damage dealt to the Dark val'kyr
, but halves the damage dealt to the Light val'kyr
.
The 2
Dark Portals
grant the opposite aura
黑暗精粹
, which makes you immune to "Dark" (shadow) damage and doubles damage dealt to the Light val'kyr
, but halves the damage dealt to the Dark val'kyr
.
These two
光明精粹
and
黑暗精粹
auras are essential to burn through the huge health pool of the twins, but more importantly to survive the large raid damage each val'kyr will inflict to players of the opposite element throughout the encounter.
Concentrated Essences
Once the encounter begins, little orbs of
and
will spawn from the edges of the arena and start flying in random directions. If they collide with a player, they will explode in a small 6 yards detonation called
光明解禁
and
黑暗解禁
respectively, dealing 9k damage (15k in heroic) fire or shadow damage to every player in range.
A player with the
光明精粹
aura will naturally be immune to the fire damage from the
光明解禁
and vice versa for
黑暗精粹
and
黑暗解禁
. But they will also receive 6 stacks of the
能量递增
debuff every time they're hit by a concentrated essence of the same element as their aura, up to 100 stacks that will then transform the debuff into
光明增效
or
黑暗增效
, restoring 20% of total mana instantly and increasing damage dealt to the opposite element by an additional 100% for 20 seconds.
Raiders carrying the
光明精粹
aura must intercept nearby
orbs to stack up their
能量递增
debuff for more damage, but also to protect their teammates with the opposite element from the damage on impact, and vice versa for players carrying the
黑暗精粹
aura.
Val'kyr Abilities
Each val'kyr pulses 2.5k magic damage (4.5k in heroic) every 2 seconds on every player in the arena with their
光明涌动
and
黑暗冲击
aura. Since each player will carry either the
光明精粹
or the
黑暗精粹
aura themselves, they will only take damage from the surge of the opposite element. This constant raid pressure means your healers will never be bored in this encounter. It also greatly promotes using a Discipline

healing over time
effects. And of course,

and

To make up for the high pressure on the raid from the various environmental damage, the val'kyrs deal very low damage to tanks overall. They melee for as low as the average phase 1 boss and will use the

ability roughly every 20 seconds, dealing an instant 100% of a melee swing (125% in heroic) that can not be avoided and applies a debuff on the tank increasing damage taken by 20% for 15 seconds or for the next 5 incoming attacks.
Special Abilities
Every 45 seconds, one of the two val'kyr will use a
Special Ability
out of 4 possible options:

Similarly to

's Allies of Nature, each of these actions will be used once before they can be repeated. This can help you predict the next ability and anticipate your next move.
The Shield + Twin Pact combo
Either

will begin casting

(Dark), which will heal the common health pool of the val'kyrs by 20% (50% in heroic) after 15 seconds if not interrupted. At the same time, they will protect themselves with a
光明之盾
for
, or
黑暗之盾
for
, which will prevent spell interruptions until it's destroyed. The shield absorbs 700k damage (1.2M in heroic) and only once it's destroyed your raid will be able to interrupt the
双生相协
and prevent the val'kyrs from healing.
We will go over how to destroy the shield in the strategy section below.
While one val'kyr is busy casting
双生相协
for 15 seconds under her protective shield, the other val'kyr gains the
双生之能
buff. The val'kyr with this buff will now dual wield (without hit penalty) for the duration of the
双生相协
cast, doubling its damage output on the tank, on top of receiving a 20% physical damage increase. Each successful swing will also grant the val'kyr a stack of the

, increasing it's attack speed by 10% per stack, with no limit of stacks.
Both the

buffs are removed immediately when you successfully interrupt the

. It is highly recommended that tanks save defensive cooldowns to mitigate the incoming damage during this buff.
The Vortexes
Either

will begin casting a

for 6 seconds before unleashing a powerful
光明漩涡
/
黑暗漩涡
, pulsing 9.5k (16k in heroic) fire or shadow damage respectively every second on the entire raid for 5 seconds, for a total of ~48k damage on each player (80k in heroic) before resistances. The initial cast gives you time to react and click the closest
Light
or
Dark Portal
to adopt the appropriate Essence aura to immune the damage.

Heroic Abilities
In heroic difficulty,
and
will also cast
光明之触
and
黑暗之触
on two players with the opposite element every 45 seconds, which will add a damage over time on these players ticking for ~6k fire or shadow damage every 2 seconds for 20 seconds, for a total of 60k damage each.
The targeted players can quickly swap their element at the nearest portal to remove the debuff if they so desire, but truthfully the damage of this debuff is not threatening at all and not worth losing the DPS uptime from moving back and forth between portals. It can also be dispelled by the usual immunities such as

(easy)
The infamous
door strat
was the safest and most popular strategy to beat the Twin Val'kyr in original Wrath. This is due to the fact that no Concentrated Essence orbs could spawn at the location of the entrance portal of the raid, making this alcove a completely safe space to position your raid and mitigate the environmental damage from the encounter.
Although Blizzard has now added spawn points for Concentrated Essence orbs at the location of the door for this Classic release because they weren't happy about players finding safe spots for this mechanic, the alcove by the gate remains the easiest position to bunker down with your raid and ignore the orbs for the most part.
Preparations
1 Tank will take the
黑暗精粹
aura to tank
, the main target of the raid.
1 Tank will take the
光明精粹
aura to tank
.
Assign between 1 and 3 "goalies" that will take the
光明精粹
. The goalies will be in charge of intercepting every
orbs approaching the alcove to protect the raid from any
光明解禁
explosion damage, while also dodging
orbs.
The preferred classes for this role that requires constant movement and personal defensive cooldowns are Discipline

.
The rest of the raid will take the

and focus down
for 90% of the fight. They will never change essence and never have to move.
Positionning
Once the encounter is engaged and the gate of the arena is closed, the raid will back inside the alcove, back against the gate.
The tanks will drag
and
to the group, next to each other to allow cleave damage, and flip them so their back is facing the raid.
The goalie(s) will position in an arc around the tanks and the raid, and act as a shield by intercepting every light orb with their body.
Special Abilities

, all raid members must swap target to break the

The Parse Strategy
(advanced)
Unlike the door strat which shies away from the Concentrated Essence orbs mechanic, the
Parse Strategy
aims at maximizing the stacks of

on the whole raid for the highest uptime of

to achieve high raid DPS and kill times.
It's a more difficult strategy to execute which requires discipline and reactive shot calling to swap attunements based on the order of the randomized

The goalies will position in a circle around the raid, and act as a shield by intercepting every light orb with their body.

, goalies must swap to

and vice versa.
The goalies and one of the tanks will always be the wrong element for the
Vortex
, so they will need heavy healing and defensive cooldowns to survive (

Recommended Raid Composition
Tanks: 1-2 Tanks
— Most groups will run 2 tanks for safety but you can single-tank both Val'kyr.
Healers: 3-5
— Depending on your goalies' ability to shield the raid from orbs damage, you may need more or less healing on the raid.
DPS: 18-21
— High raid DPS will make the fight a lot easier by reducing the amount of
Special Abilities
per fight. With a bit of luck on the first ability, you may even kill the Twins before any Shield or movement.

Tips for Tanks on Twin Val'kyr
Always tank

next to each other to allow cleave.
Save your strongest defensive cooldown in case of a
Vortex
of the opposite element. Don't expect healers to react in time and heal bomb you.
A minor defensive cooldown should suffice to soften the damage from
双生之能
and
瓦格里的迅捷
.
Be vocal when you plan to drag the Twins to another portal, so the whole raid is on the same page and the goalies can clear a path.
You can help to intercept a Concentrated Essence orb if it involves minimal movement that won't move either boss.
