This guide provides tips and strategies for defeating the Anub'arak boss encounter in Trial of the Crusader, for both 10-player and 25-player raids and Normal or Heroic difficulty. Learn how to handle difficult mechanics with positioning diagrams, breakdowns of abilities, and tips and tricks for defeating the boss encounter. Anub'arak Strategy for Trial of the Crusader in Wrath of the Lich King Classic
While the Twin Val'kyr encounter looks messy, with an intimidating list of mechanics, but turns out to be fairly easy to execute, the
encounter in

is the exact opposite. In this fight, you will see fewer mechanics repeating from one phase to the next, but with a much greater focus on execution and tight DPS checks in heroic difficulty.

The
encounter is divided into 3 phases:
Emerged
, commonly called "phase 1", for 80 seconds before Anub'arak submerges.
Submerged
, commonly called "phase 2" or intermission, for 65 seconds before Anub'arak emerges back.
These two states cycle through until you bring Anub'arak's health down to 30% HP.
Phase 3: once Anub'arak hits
30% HP remaining
, he will not submerge anymore until the end of the fight.
Phase 1 — Anub'arak Emerged
stays emerged for 80 seconds at a time, time when your raid will be able to damage him, before submerging into the ground, out of reach, for 65 seconds.
is usually tanked where he stands, in the deeper part of his cave, and this positioning helps to deal with his submerged phase later on.
He deals respectable melee damage, with a swing range similar to
观察者奥尔加隆
in his glorious pre-nerf days, but without the dual-wielding part (1.5s swing speed) which makes the damage output much easier to manage. Nevertheless, make sure your healers are aware because they may have forgotten that tanks do take damage after
and the
Twin Val'kyr
hitting like

Every 20-30 seconds,
will also hit the tank with

, which deals ~20k frost damage before resistance and will freeze (stun) the tank for 3 seconds, removing their avoidance and exposing them to a sudden burst in incoming damage, similar to

every 20 seconds, applying a 18 seconds damage over time on 2 random players (5 in heroic difficulty) which ticks for 3500 Frost damage (6000 in heroic difficulty) every 3 seconds, for a total of 21k damage (36k in heroic). New targets will be picked a couple seconds after the previous wave of

times out and for the entirety of the fight, so it is essential that your healers track these debuffs to babysit the targeted players, especially in the last critical phase. The debuff can be removed by the usual immunities such as

— Once below 75% HP, the Burrowers will attempt to burrow into the ground and heal back to full every few seconds, therefore they must always be tanked on top of a

patch that will stop this ability.

— Melee hits from the Burrowers stack a debuff increasing physical damage taken by 25% per stack, up to 9 stacks (225% total).

— Each Burrower buffs other Burrowers within 12 yards with a stackable +100% attack and casting speed aura. 2 Burrowers side by side will only buff each other once (+100%). 4 Burrowers in hard mode will each receive 3 auras (+300%) and 8 Burrowers will receive 7 (+700%).

— Every 30 seconds, each Burrower will use Shadow Strike, teleporting to a random raid member to murder them. This spell has a long 8 seconds cast time that must be interrupted. Prefer AoE stuns such as

and

to interrupt them all at once.

s will spawn from the sides of the cave and rush towards your healers. They must be picked immediately by 1-2 dedicated off-tanks that will then drag the Burrowers next to
to be cleaved down.
The Burrowers must always be tanked on top of a

patch that will prevent them from submerging and healing back to full. Before the Burrowers emerge, have 2

to the left of the boss, in range of all cleave abilities, and the other group on top of the right

s will spawn every 45 seconds while
is emerged, for a total of 2 waves of 2 (4 in heroic) per emerged phase. Since tanking more than 2 Burrowers at a time would be extremely dangerous due to their
蛛魔狂怒
aura, it is essential that all
s are cleared before the next wave spawns. If passive cleave damage is not enough to kill the Burrowers while focusing down Anub'arak, make sure to call for focus fire if the timer for the next wave approaches and some Burrowers are still alive.
Phase 2 — Anub'arak Submerged
After being emerged for 80 seconds,
will submerge into the ground where he can't be attacked anymore.
While burrowed under the surface, Anub'arak will fire
giant spikes
through the ground that will chase after a random player

and must be kited to survive. The spikes from

ignore armor and deal 15k physical damage (18k in heroic) every second to players within 6 yards. The only way to stop the pursuit is to direct the spikes through a patch of

ice will be destroyed, but this action will interrupt Anub'arak for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, he will pursue a new target. Repeat this process for 65 seconds, until
emerges back.
If your raid is capable of very high DPS
and can bring
down to 30% HP in only 2 emerged phases (1 submerged phase), you can use all 4
s during the same submerged phase to help with
穿刺
.
If your raid DPS is average
and you need 3 emerged phases (2 submerged phases) to bring
down to 30% HP, then you can only use 2
s for each submerged phase. This means you can only interrupt
穿刺
with 2
永冻
patches max and will need to kite the
穿刺
spikes for a total of 45 seconds out of 65 seconds of the submerged phase.
To buy time, the pursued players should kite for as long as possible using mobility skills, while the raid runs in the opposite direction. Once caught out by the spikes, the pursued player can call for a
保护之手
to immune the damage from
穿刺
for 10 seconds, before eventually running into
永冻
to interrupt the boss for 5 seconds and reset the pursuit. Avoid abilities such as
假死
or
寒冰屏障
that will force Anub'arak to pursue a new target but without resetting the speed of the spikes.
Throughout the submerged phase, small
s will spawn from the sides of the cave every few seconds, just to keep the rest of the raid busy. They emerge with a small 20k threat lead on a random raid member that they will chase after and must be slowed and killed quickly before they
enrage
.
Although they have little HP (147k in heroic) and deal barely any direct damage, they apply a nasty debuff called
酸腺撕咬
with each swing, dealing 1200 nature damage (1800 in heroic) every 3 seconds for a minute,
stackable
, that can't be dispelled. You certainly don't want to enter phase 3 of the fight with another debuff ticking on you so, if you come close to melee them, you better make sure you stay below the player kiting on threat.
The boss emerges back after being submerged for 65 seconds. Threat is carried over from the previous emerged phase so the boss will naturally chase after the tank after emerging. Drag
back between the two
永冻
patches used to tank the
s earlier and repeat phase 1 until the next submerge or the boss reaches 30% HP.
Phase 3 — Leeching Swarm
Phase 3 begins once
reaches 30% HP. After a 1.5 seconds cast, the boss will release his deadly
吸血虫群
that will drain 10% of the current health of every raid member (30% in heroic) and convert it to health at a rate of 230% of the damage done until the end of the fight. Healing reduction from
瞄准射击
,

or

is
mandatory
for this phase. Forget about

as the stacks are inconsistent and the uptime is low.
The rest of the emerged phase abilities continue as normal (melees,
寒冰打击
,
刺骨之寒
) but the boss won't submerge anymore. In heroic difficulty,
s keep spawning every 45 seconds for as long as phase 3 continues.
While
吸血虫群
is active, your raid DPS is greatly offset by the health absorbed by the boss. To win this race against
's healing, save

/
嗜血
and all cooldowns for the final sprint, and ignore any new
s to focus the boss exclusively. If you aren't killing them during this last stretch, Burrowers can be tanked outside of
永冻
to give your off-tanks some respite while they're
潜地
d. Since tanks can't survive two waves of Burrowers alive at the same time, the timer before the next wave is your limit to kill the boss.

converts
a percentage of each player's current health
— not maximum health —
into healing, so your goal is now to maintain the whole raid's HP as low as possible, without dying obviously, to minimize the healing conversion. The better your healers are at this delicate balancing act, the faster you can end the boss. Since the swarm ticks are considered nature damage,

are mandatory. Abuse a rotation of

as per usual to further mitigate the damage on the raid once you have stabilized at low HP.

is not affected by

so you can not fully reduce the damage below 250 HP per tick.
Once most of the raid reaches a low HP threshold, passive healing sources such as

should provide enough healing to counter the damage received from

Your tanks, still suffering the assaults of
and the
s in this critical phase, can't risk dropping too low and will need a lot more attention from healers. The same goes for the

targets that will need immediate care to reach over 6k HP before the first tick and to be maintained at a higher HP threshold until the debuff fades.
Recommended Raid Composition
Tanks: 3
— In heroic difficulty, you need 1 tank for
plus 2 off-tanks to tank the 4
s from each wave.
Healers: 3-5
— Phase 3 can be very stressful for healers, but smart healing beats more healing against

.
DPS: 17-19
— High raid DPS, especially cleave, will help you burn through
's HP faster, particularly in phase 3.
Anub'arak Tips for Trial of the Crusader in Wrath of the Lich King Classic
Tips for Tanks on Anub'arak
Each off-tank must keep their
s at least 12 yards away from the other group.
Make sure
s are in range of cleaves at all times.
Save minor defensive cooldowns for when you reach the maximum stacks of

If you need to move through

quickly to grab a mob, ask for a

Prefer avoidance, armor, and block items and trinkets to reduce your stamina.
Nature Resistance
enchants
and
consumables
can greatly reduce the healing from

due to your high stamina.
Tips for Melee on Anub'arak
Cleave the
s as hard as possible so they die before the next wave.
With a fast kill time, you should be able to use your first round of DPS cooldowns on pull or for the first wave of
s and have them ready again for the Phase 3 burn.
Do not take aggro from the
s.
Save your mobility cooldowns or
硝化甘油推进器
to kite in Phase 2.
Save personal defensive cooldowns in case you are affected by
刺骨之寒
in Phase 3.
Tips for Ranged on Anub'arak
Be mindful of your threat generation when
s spawn and until they are picked up by off-tanks.
Spread your DoTs on the
s so they die before the next wave.
With a fast kill time, you should be able to use your first round of DPS cooldowns on pull or for the first wave of
s and have them ready again for the Phase 3 burn.
Save your mobility cooldowns or
硝化甘油推进器
to kite in Phase 2.
Save personal defensive cooldowns in case you are affected by
刺骨之寒
in Phase 3.
Tips for Healers on Anub'arak
Position close to the main tank and be mindful of your threat generation when
s spawn and until they are picked up by off-tanks.
Save your mobility cooldowns or
硝化甘油推进器
to kite in Phase 2.
Make sure every group has at least one source of passive healing to sustain themselves during
吸血虫群
.
Save all raid cooldowns to mitigate the damage from
吸血虫群
in Phase 3.
Players affected by
刺骨之寒
in Phase 3 need immediate healing or they will die after 3 seconds.
Assign each group to a healer to make sure every raid member gets equal attention.
Anub'arak Abilities for Trial of the Crusader in Wrath of the Lich King Classic
Ability
Description
寒冰打击
Inflicts 25% Froststrike damage to an enemy and freezes it in a block of ice for 3 sec.
刺骨之寒
Penetrating cold sinks into several enemy targets, inflicting 6000 Frost damage every 3 sec. Lasts 18 sec.
穿刺
Fires spikes up through the floor above Anub'arak, inflicting 17672 to 19828 Physical damage to anyone in their path. This attack ignores armor, but cannot penetrate Permafrost.
吸血虫群
Releases a swarm of insects that attack the caster's enemies, leeching 30% of each target's current health every 1 sec. A minimum of 250 health will be leeched.
