Welcome to Wowhead's Pre-Raid Best in Slot Gear list for Protection Warrior Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from dungeons, PvP, professions, BoE World drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Protection Warrior Tank Pre-Raid
One of the main differences between TBC and
Wrath of the Lich King
,
if not the main difference
, is tanks' threat. 15 years ago, Blizzard decided that threat was too often viewed as an intimidating mechanic for aspiring tank players and a bottleneck for fun as a DPS. To remedy that, they increased the threat generation of all tanks across the board by roughly 40-50% compared to TBC, and suddenly threat was so easy to come by that offensive gear became obsolete for a tank back then.
For this reason, and contrary to TBC, in this Best in Slot gear guide for the Protection

you will find mostly defensive items and gear sets that are less focused on threat compared to previous expansions. Between the new and improved threat values of the
战士
's kit, inflated

modifier (149.5% → 207.35%), and the hefty amount of attack power and block value from the now baseline strength on all plate gear, I believe that threat will be plenty even without mixing in offensive items this time around.
However, you will still find a selection of the most balanced and budget-efficient items for each slot in this guide, and some of those may still be threat-oriented items alongside more conservative mitigation-oriented alternatives.
Keep in mind that gearing your Protection

highly depends on your raiding environment. While I may recommend mostly defensive gear sets that will fit the majority of players, only you can know what kind of threat is needed in your raid. If your guild requires a
higher threat ceiling
to withstand the pressure from high-performing damage dealers, then feel free to mix in threat-oriented items to find the
balance
between threat and survival that works best for
your

It is also important to note that gearing as a Protection

in the early phases of an expansion requires constant adjustments to maintain your crit immunity as you upgrade your gear and may lose defense or resilience rating in some slots. Make sure you keep some item alternatives to fill in the gaps in your defense rating when needed.

is a strong pick-up for a more offensive piece, with a lot of high-value agility that is now rare to find on plate gear, if you can spare the defense.

are a cut above the rest and yet not even as good as raid drops. The very high defense is super valuable in a pre-raid gear set when reaching your critical strikes immunity is your first priority. It also comes with a good amount of hit rating and a red socket for extra stamina and expertise.

Don't stress too much if you didn't get this item during TBC since there are a lot of great alternatives available.

is a close second and your go-to defense ring paired with high block value. Other defense rings include

is an excellent mitigation ring with high stamina and armor but, ironically, it doesn't have any defense which makes it a bit tricky to fit into a pre-raid gear set while maintaining immunity to critical strikes.
肯瑞托戒指

are excellent threat-oriented rings, with high stamina and expertise bumping them to the A tier in overall value. However, fitting a second ring without defense on top of

would force too many negative trade-offs in other slots or enchants to maintain critical strikes immunity. As a result, I can't recommend using these offensive rings until you have access to raid items with higher defense to compensate.

is a great AoE/trash mobs tanking trinket with high stamina and a
shielding effect that reduces the damage of every attack by 140
while active. The proc chance is rather low and so is the uptime against bosses, but it shines in AoE tanking situations, with more enemies hitting you and the shield mitigating a bigger portion of smaller hits.
The TBC block value trinkets

remain competitive in early WotLK, mostly because of their interaction with

The remainder of tank trinkets available outside of raids is definitely not as exciting.

Your pre-raid weapon goal is the iconic

, regardless of your race. It comes with the highest stamina and DPS thanks to its epic quality, on top of high defense that is essential for an early gear set when reaching critical strikes immunity is your first challenge as a freshly 80 tank.

as a very close alternative, with the extra expertise from

making up for the DPS difference, although with less stamina and defense.
In the meantime,

is a good stepping stone from one of the easiest heroic dungeons. Its high stamina and defense make it a high-value sword for a pre-raid gear set and the slower speed could be considered a positive for cleaving. Alternatively, there is a large choice of easily obtainable weapons listed below, from quest rewards to normal dungeons.
I have to mention
艾沃尔的巨魔剑
(world drop) and
泰坦精钢碎骨锤

craft) since they perform decently on paper, around the A tier compared to weapons in this list. But I can't recommend spending gold on either of these in good faith because I do not think they are a justifiable expense, let alone real upgrades when considering the lack of defense that you will have to compensate for in other slots. and much-needed defense rating. Interestingly enough, none of the Phase 1 raids drop a single tank ranged weapon to replace this engie gun.
Overall, ranged weapons are a low value slot for a Protection

and there are dozens of acceptable alternatives with similar value. Instead of listing over 20 ranged weapons available in various dungeons, I have opted to only mention a few easy-to-obtain stepping stones while you work towards crafting

Hello, I was wondering if there was a pre raid bis for revenge prot? I can't imagine stacking shield block value is useful here as well picking up pure defense over other avoidance stats like dodge, parry and shield block rating to proc revenge more often. In addition, what weapon you use is important since you go pretty deep into the arms tree and pick up a weapon spec making axes the best weapon due to crit percent and crit damage for bigger revenges. Which leads me further to the point that maybe adding in some crit pieces would be useful too since you want your revenges to crit. Not that a lot of prot warriors will be going revenge spec but revenge prot makes the heroic dungeon spam a breeze and might even become the meta for speed clears.
