Welcome to Wowhead's Phase 1 Best in Slot Gear list for Feral Druid Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Gear in this guide is primarily obtained from Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, and Eye of Eternity. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from raids, dungeons, PvP, professions, BoE World drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Feral Druid Tank Phase 1
Phase 1 gearing for Feral tanks in WotLK follows the same overall principles as in TBC, with just a new notable differences. First, compared to vanilla WoW and TBC, the balance between DPS stats and survival stats in tank gear sets can be shifted way more towards the defensive axis in WotLK. This is a result of massive buffs to the additive Threat modifiers on the key

As a result, a skilled Feral tank player will be able to generate more than enough TPS to hold aggro against any DPS spec in the game even when wearing pure mitigation gear, simply by executing the rotation properly and leveraging explosive cooldowns effectively. For this reason, you will notice a lot more pure survivability items in our WotLK bear BiS lists compared to the more balanced pieces recommended in early TBC. The most notable examples of this for Phase 1 gearing are

, which both pack zero offensive stats but extremely high Stamina levels. Since the missing offensive stats on these pieces are irrelevant for holding Threat comfortably, it is optimal to wear them when tanking raid bosses in order to reduce the number of dedicated healers you need spamming you.
Most 25-man raid encounters in WotLK can be executed with as few as 2 dedicated healers, provided that the tank's effective health pool (EHP) is high enough to provide a safe buffer against burst damage spikes.
Second, Ferals in WotLK will no longer to need to worry about optimizing for crit immunity in tanking sets. This is because the new version of the

talent makes all bears uncrittable by raid bosses even without any gear equipped. As a result, Resilience Rating is now a worthless tanking stat for bears in PvE, and Defense Rating is only valuable for the avoidance it provides.
Finally, the value of avoidance stats, especially Agility, plummets in WotLK compared to TBC. This is because WotLK introduces a mechanic called
diminishing returns
on all avoidance stats in order to counteract a fundamental scaling issue with avoidance in prior expansions. In TBC, avoidance stats exhibited
increasing returns
in their value: each additional 1% Dodge provided more value for tank survival than the previous. This resulted in tanks (especially high avoidance tanks like Feral Druids) scaling far better with gear than desired, so much so that the

aura needed to be implemented so that mitigation gear would continue to be relevant for tanks at the end of the expansion. In WotLK, avoidance stats have been re-worked so that each point in Defense Rating, Dodge Rating, and Agility provides less of a % Dodge and % Miss increase than the previous in order to counteract this effect. As a result, Agility becomes much less efficient for improving tank survivability than Stamina, and even aggressively skewed tanking sets should prioritize Stamina gems moving forward.
With these gearing differences in mind, the two embedded sets below showcase the highest overall value gear configurations that can be assembled for bear tanking in Phase 1 of WotLK Classic. The first set was optimized with a conservative survivability skew, and should be your default choice when main tanking single target boss encounters:

is such an insanely overpowered profession for PvE that is assumed that any competitive Feral tank player will have it. In contrast, your second profession choice has hardly any impact in WotLK since all crafting professions provide very comparable PvE benefits, so no other profession-exclusive gear augmentations are assumed.
The second example gear set below is a more aggressive configuration, with survivability down-weighted relative to TPS and DPS. This type of aggressive skew is appropriate for tanking 5-man dungeons or trash packs in

, as well as for hybrid off-tanking roles where you will be tanking a high priority add that does not hit hard and then DPSing the boss afterwards. As a result, a number of more offensive itemization changes are made from the mit skewed set above:
Since the aggressive gear set is primarily intended for tanking trash, it is optimized around the reduced Hit and Expertise caps against level 82 mobs (6% Hit and 24 Expertise, respectively). As a result, your melee attacks and special abilities will have a 100% success rate against all trash mobs (as well as 5-man dungeon bosses) when wearing this set.

The Monarch Crab trinket is really good, but I think most JC's are gonna put their big stamina gems into that too. any chance on the next phase including the JC jewels. As of right now I have two in the Crab and on in the Titanium Frostguard Ring.
