Welcome to Wowhead's Phase 2 Best in Slot Gear list for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Gear in this guide is primarily obtained from Ulduar, Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, and Eye of Eternity. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from raids, dungeons, PvP, professions, Bind on Equip drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Phase 2
One would feel looking at Ulduar gear, that the WoW team was finally starting to understand what kind of tank Blood Death Knights were. You start to see a lot more weight given to Dodge than Parry across all of our item slots, you start to see Expertise and Hit more frequently, and with the increase to ilvls in WOTLK Classic everything is more abundant. We've learned a lot so far this expansion, with the realization that Blood and Frost tanks are one of the best options for the off-tank role due to their ability to utilize an S-Tier DPS dual spec for single tank encounters. The rule of thumb still applies, every single tank can do every aspect of the expansion as a Main Tank or Off Tank. Phase 2's Blood BIS is going to be the overall best of both worlds allowing us to Main Tank or Off Tank efficiently, as it just happens our full throttle EHP set-up can easily make hit cap and does hit expertise soft cap while also not losing out on our strong 4pc set bonus. Remember to take into account raid buffs, and food buffs when planning out your stats.
There are swaps to be made if you're looking to maximize your Damage, or care about your Parse. This guide is written for tanking, and not parsing, so bare that in mind when you're analyzing the gear. Tanking isn't a one size fits all experience, it mostly depends on the goals of your guild, your raid, and your personal goals. This build is set-up to tank and survive the scariest situations you'll be put in, there is no emphasis on damage outside of Rune Strike. Often people confuse the number on a website to determine their skill as a tank and while that could be said for some, Blood should be played as a reactive tank to hold Frost/Unholy/Death runes to best utilize Death Strikes. Tier 7 content outside of Sarth was a childrens museum in terms of difficulty compared to what Algalon will do to you if you're playing greedy.
There were also quite a few unhappy readers regarding the inclusion of Dual Wield in the P1 guide to reach the best possible EHP and Avoidance as possible. It also turned out most of Naxxramas parry hasted, which resulted in potentially taking more damage than you would if you were using a 2H due to not being Expertise capped. That's not the case in Ulduar as Thorim and Auriaya are the only bosses that parry haste and DW does provide more avoidance than any 2-hander while being virtually equal in Stamina. You can still use whatever weapons you have at your disposal, and as stated above and multiple times in all of the Blood guide - you can use WHATEVER best serves your playstyle. My goal isn't to prepare you for Rank 1 dps parses, my goal is to prepare you to do the best job possible as a tank first and foremost. If you're looking for parse builds or ways to optimize your DPS while sacrificing your survivability or self-sustain, you'll have to join us in
Blight Club
as I don't recommend it for 99% of the player base. Sacrificing what makes Blood great, defeats the purpose of bringing a Blood DK in the first place. If you want to care about a Parse, care about your healing Parse.
Below you'll find my recommendation on the overall best build for Survivability. Focusing again on EHP for surviving big hits, obtaining our 4pc, but using a 2H this time for increased Rune Strike Damage. There are some things that can be moved to achieve higher avoidance, hit, or expertise. We'll cover those below.
Emblems of Conquest for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Phase 2
Emblems of Conquest become the new raid currency, replacing Emblem of Valor. These work the exact same way, allowing you to buy pieces of gear close to the ilvl of the raid drops. First and foremost you'll want to pick up both of your tier pieces, as these are your bis for their slot. From there it's really up to whatever you need the most.
It's also worth noting that you can buy Runed Orbs, which are used to craft BoE's, and will likely cost a lot the first couple of weeks. With the crafted belt being our BIS defensive option, and the boots being a solid upgrade over T7 boots until you can get some Ulduar drops, these are actually quite valuable.

Unlike the Retail or Private Server experience people have had in Ulduar, we've gotten Item Level upgrades on Hard Mode gear. On top of the power of our Tier-8 set bonus, it's about finding a balance to get the most stats possible while hitting certain breakpoints.

Would Aesir's Edge not be a viable option and probably far easier to obtain than Vezax or Yogg (HM) gear? With stat buffs, it should be pretty close to at least Hammer of Crushing Whispers.

Wow, this list is actually mostly right.
No dumb dw, 4 pc set, the polearm, no IT dmg sigil...
So, who did you copy it from? lol
Corrections
Drape of the Skyborn is 2nd bis. That should be on the list.
Red gem should be in the belt. 9 stam bonus instead of 6.
The Leviathan's Coil is better than the seal of ulduar, since you are over the expertise soft cap. After the soft cap, expertise loses half of it's value, and it's not an amazing stat for DKs to start with. 20 Str + 0.75% avoidance vs 13 armor and 7 stamina + 26 expertise.
PS: Now please go fix the #$%^ty builds in the guide.

I see a lot of debate on whether DW or 2hand tanking is the best. You all have seemed to forget you can weapon swap and sigil swap while in combat. If your 2hander does more threat then start the fight with that 2hander. 1handers have defense and avoidance built in, making them the perfect candidate for swordshattering. When I weapon swap to my 1handers and swap to defense sigil I gain 4% avoidance, putting me at 62.5% total avoidance buffed. Going from 58% to 62% actuallly causes me to get hit ~8% less than I would before because of how the math works out.

I get that this is a "BiS" list but really it is also helpful to have BiS pre-hardmode items for each slot. There isn't one for 2hand weapons (it's 3 HM items and an arena weapon).
my quick check suggests that these are the ones to shoot for pre-hard mode.
