If you don't have the quest yet and happen to come across this guy, you have to be just on the borderline of the Isle of Thunder and the Shadewood Thicket at 62, 63. Pointless to try and kill before you have the quest. He's phased and won't pull unless you're close just on the borderline between phasing.

Found him on the opposite beach of where the map for the quest said. Phasing makes it hard to tag him. Lucky for me a hunter needed it too and was able to get him using a trap.

..why does blizzard hate frost nova for daily quest mobs?

if you are horde you can kite him around the shore up to the horde guards and wards - you even get an achievement if you kill it using a ward.
if you manage to not damage the adds too much they will be picked up and kept busy by the guards.

Best melee strategy I've found is just to kite him away from starting point, the adds don't usually keep up, and don't hit hard

Don't be intimidated by his adds. If you pull him away from the group, the adds will only cast long lines of frost/fire (long casting time and obvious visual) that you just have to avoid. Just focus on Nurkala, kill him, and then run away to drop combat from the adds.

So troll males can stand up straight at all times. Amazing.

On my undergeared DK, I cast Path of Frost, mounted up, and got close enough to pull. About half way across (still out his range) I hit him with Icy Touch. If not, he'll reset. Then ran into the little Sunreaver camp. As stated above there's lot's of help there, and only one add (not sure which one) ever got close to me.

Just solo'd this bad boy and his posse today, was late and there was nobody around to help, Demo Lock, I kept him tied up with my felguard, dodging the casters spells, focused on the healer first, then him, all the while healing/reviving my pet, and healing myself using healthstones and bandaids. then picked off his caster pals after he was down. trust me, if you do this yourself, its a loooong fight.

Just tried soling him, and failed. I dragged him up to the guards, which just ignored him and his posse. Instead he chased me halfway across the board before resetting. Tried to kill the healer first, but he kept healing everything I did. WTH!

I was unable to interrupt the healer enough to do a whole lot to anyone as a shadow priest, so I just dotted everything, got the healer low enough to focus on himself, and ran away. The healer guy stood still and healed himself instead of following, and I just nuked Nurkala while dodging the casters. After Nurkala died I just ran away from the rest. Not really difficult, just obnoxious if you don't know what to do.

I'm an ilvl 468 arms warrior and this guy toasts me in what seems like seconds flat. Have pulled him away from add's and everything. He seems to have some type of blow that deals about 50k damage, hitting 3x in a row. VERY hard.

As an ilvl 477 hunter (survival) I found him very difficult to solo. I managed it, but had fairly low health at the end of the fight. I used a bear pet, targeted Nurkala, then dropped a freezing trap in the narrow area between the water and larger rocks (in the area leading into his area). With my bear on passive I marked and shot once, then turned and ran back over the trap, stopping at some distance past it, but still with him in range. I then sent the bear to attack, and started my normal rotation; also used Stampede. I kited him some, FD a couple of times so I could pop back up and heal, and when he was dead, ran to the beach on the far side. The adds followed part way, then turned back.
I found this fight to be very tough but manageable once I held the bear back until Nurkala was in pursuit.

The biggest challenge with killing him is that he has a healer amongst the 3 goons that surround him who will constantly heal him. The best method I've found is:
Single-target the healer while avoiding the frost trails and fire trails from the two guards. If you have AoE spells or abilities that will target the other mobs, then feel free to use them. If you are a pet class, then send your pet after Nurkala while you focus on the healer, making sure to
interupt
him every chance you get.
Once the healer is down, then you can just kite Nurkala around the area to avoid the two guards. The frost & fire trails have a very noticeable ground affect that you can easily avoid. They won't really chase you, but tend to stay put casting their spells.
Once Nurkala is down, just run away to drop aggro on the guards.
It may not be the
best
method, but it seems to get the job done and it's doable for most classes.

Aggroed him and kited him way into the Violet Rise, his party gave up, but he pursued. Took him down to zero health, then he evaded.

If you're having a hard time soloing him just cc the healer and kill the raptor asap. It does does quite a bit of damage but dies quickly. Then just keep kiting Nurkala to avoid the fire and ice lines the other 2 mobs shoot regularly.

On my poorly-geared Horde enhancement shaman, I did the "pull him to the Blood Elf wards" and lucked out big.
I pulled with
Elemental Blast
and
Unleash Elements
at max range and stood my ground for a whole 2 seconds (very brave) until I could toss a
Flame Shock
, pop
Ghost Wolf
, and run like a coward down the beach and across the water. As soon as
FS
came off cooldown, popped it again (to keep his interest) and resumed my wolf-shaped skedaddle until I got over to the wards.
At this point, my luck became amazing. The
perimeter ward
destroyed Nurkala's healer and one of the
Sunreaver Scouts
engaged Nurkala's raptor, killing it very quickly before getting aggro'd by Nurkala's casters and running over to keep them busy.
After that, it was just me, Nurkala, my enhanced Fire Elemental, my spirit wolves, and assorted survival totems. Nurk went down about the same time as the unwise Sunreaver Scout, but I was out of range of the two caster dudes and they just looked at me and reset.
I am not counting on this happening again, but if the RNG doesn't hate you (and you're Horde), the kite-and-kill strat can work.

When attemting to solo Nurkala as melee, it may be easiest to activate a Kirin Tor Perimeter Ward before pulling him. I solo'd him by first activating the ward nearest him to the left facing away from the shore. Of course I had to keep avoiding the Zandalari Frost and Firespear's long range attacks, but either all damage against me was reduced or reflected or my damage was buffed.

I kited him all the way from Alliance side to the Shado-Pan @ Bleak Hallow. They kill everything that comes their way. Mighty Dino too.

I just dinged 90 and got him down by killing his add and pulling him out of healing range. The 2 dps casters have obvious lines you can avoid.

When I first tried to kill him on my hunter, I just MD'd my bear pet and opened up on Nurkala with an aimed shot and my bear charged in, causing all of the goons and the raptor pet to aggro him instead of me, which normally works well since he can take a lot more damage than me, obviously. Well, this seemed to be working fine until I noticed that Nurkala kept getting healed. And none of the 3 elite mobs with him had a mana bar, so I wasn't sure who was doing it or how. I suspected it was the prophet, and after looking him up, sure enough, the
Zandalari Prophet
casts healing touch - despite not having mana. I find that a little odd, but whatever.
So he's the real problem that prevents you from just nuking Nurkala quick. So, I changed my strategy. This time I opened with an aimed shot at Nurkala's pet raptor, the
Zandalari Fleshrender
, which one shot killed him, eliminating that problem. Then I just focus fired Nurkala himself, but this time I did it while running backward to keep getting him further away from the 3 elites. For some reason they never seemed to keep up with Nurkala, and as such he was out of range for the Prophet to heal him. That made it simple as hell. I'm sure you could kill the Prophet instead but why bother when you can just move Nurkala out of his range.
I didn't bother with trying to involve NPCs to help, didn't try and use the Perimeter Ward which I thought worked by just right clicking it, but maybe I had to do it before I was in combat, I don't know, because it did nothing when I tried it once before. I didn't do anything fancy, just made him chase me down the beach while shooting him until he died.
A few people stated that this was the simplest and best way to get the job done, but with other comments suggesting different strategies, I wasn't positive what the best way to do this was when reading everything prior to my second attempt on him. So yeah, everyone who recommended this was right, don't bother with trying anything more complicated.

Solo'd as a Ret Pally. LoS trick with the rocks did not help with his healing. I kept Repentance on the healer the entire fight and it went very easy. Just stay out of Fire and Ice cones from the other adds and damage taken is minimal.
