EDIT: Upon further examination, Rhonin, Aethas, and Archmade Modera all wear mostly the same armor. Just a color swap for the trim, especially on the shoulders and with the "gems." Shoulders, boots, pants, and gloves are identical.

True that the revealed face has no implication of the npc;s identity, however, Wow models still exist underneath clothing, and it is possible to see a head if the game is lagging enough that the clothes do not load immediately.

See this guy is gonna be present when we finally kill Arthas, and then he will throw off his helmet and reveal himself to be Kael. As Arthas falls his helmet will fall off, and he will drop frostmourne which Kael will run up and don the helmet screaming about how this was his plan all along blah blah blah, and become the new Lich King, then you will fight him while he uses all of arthas' abilities as well as all his old ones, and we will die...

I don't think Kael would be back under Arthas's control and fight for him, since he hates him . Arthas destroyed Quel'thalas and stole Jaina's love from Kael... So if Kael is gonna make a comeback , it probably would be to help defeat the Lich King...

The fact that Kael'Thas has no head because we took it off is problematic for him, because nobody's going to be mortally afraid of an evil blood elf who just plain looks goofy without a noggin.

Hence, until he deceives us into retrieving his head, he is wearing a helmet.

Let's look at Kael'thas and Aethas side-by-side for a moment.

Archmage Aethas Sunreaver is a new face in the Kirin Tor; he hasn't been around as long as Rhonin or his wife, or any of the members really. Somehow, he rose into the ranks fast, kinda like Kael'thas did at first. Aethas has a full-face mask on, so we can't see what he looks like, and nobody else does either. He's a very powerful Magi, like Kael'thas.

Kael'thas Sunstrider had 3 stones around his body, and nobody knew what exactly they were. When he first "died" in The Eye and came back in Magister's Terrace, we notice that he has TWO stones this time. So, he must have three Soulstones or something similar keeping him alive. He died in Magister's Terrace, and was decapitated. BUT, the Burning Legion still has power over the Undead, considering they created The Scourge.

HE STILL HAS ONE STONE LEFT. O_O

Perhaps there will be a new holiday-only raid in the next xpac during Hallow's End containing Kael's "new" beheaded form and he will have a small chance to drop Headless Kael'thas' Mount's Reins when killed.

In the Halls of Reflection Uther says ",there must always be a Lich king, even if you were to strike down Arthas, another would have to take his place, for without the control of the Lich king the scourge would wash over the world like locusts, destroying all that they touched." So either it could be either the newly turned Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, or Aethas Sunreaver/Kael'thas Sunstrider finally finding a way to feed his hunger for power and immortality. There is a heavy set of lore for the Sunreavers in Ice Crown.

Aethas' name is missing 'K,' 'l,' and 't' for him to be Kael'thas. The last part of his name which is not shared with Kael, "Reaver," (as opposed to "Strider" is the name of one of the bosses of The Eye, Kael's fortress. Aethas Sunreaver's initials are shared with another blood elf, also in The Eye. The city in which Aethas resides also is related to one of Kael'thas' underlings,(D)alaran.

When I first heard the rumor about Aethas being Kael'thas, I didn't really believe it just based on the name similarities.

But recently, I was doing the solo scenario 雷王島 on the Isle of Thunder, at the end of which there is a confrontation between the Sunreavers and the Silver Covenant, led by Lor'thremar Theron and Jaina Proudmore, respectively. While Jaina and Lor'thremar are arguing vehemently and Taran Zhu is doing his best to try to make peace between the two forces, Aethas, who happens to be with the Sunreavers at the time, randomly "shifts uncomfortably" at the sight of Jaina.

Now, there was a short lore story released from Blizzard a while back, which was about Kel'Thuzad before he joined the Lich King. He, like Kael'Thas, was part of the Kirin Tor, where Jaina was still a young apprentice. It was made quite clear in that narrative that Kael'Thas had a major crush on Jaina, though Jaina had no interest in him so his relationship with her never went beyond an awkward friendship. This, in addition to the rest of the evidence (living in Dalaran, being a powerful mage, veiled face, etc)? Yeah, I'm a believer! xD

Oh, and to those who think that he can't possibly still be alive because he was decapitated---if the Legion could create the Scourge, why wouldn't they be able to resurrect Kael? Additionally, so what if he looks different? Obviously, he has a new head/entire body, or a very clever disguise. And his last name just happens to be "Sunreaver" as part of the Sunreavers? Doesn't that seem a little strange to anyone else? It's almost as if someone was in a rush to come up with a new name...

Finally. We get to see if the rumors are true about him, for he will have an outfit change in 5.4 Siege of Orgrimmar and will not have a helmet on. Is there really a head in that helmet? Or is it truly Kael'thas Sunstrider reborn, thanks to the usage of one of his green stones?

I have been wondering, is there a reason why Vereesa and Aethas are wearing their "civilian" garments on the Galakrass encounter?

I really don't get why they gave them new models. Aethas is more justifiable since his armor was inspired by the Kirin Tor and he might want to get rid of it (yet he did spent the whole of the Isle of Thunder with it, and the robe for Siege is just so... common?) Overall is not that a big deal, but yeah, they could have given him a better outfit.

What really upsets me, is that Vereesa has a entirely different face, why?

As far as I can tell, these exact boots are not available in game. The red accent plus the way they stand off of the model, as opposed to being streamlined/seamless on the leg, make them unique. You can get the blue accent boots that stand off the model, or the red accent boots that are seamless on the legs, but these exact boots are unfortunately not available.

For those who like to follow wow lore or just curious like I was about who Aethas Sunreaver is/was, I did a bit of research and concluded that Aethas is not a resurrected Kael'thas Sunstrider. Even though there are similarities.

Both were members of the Kirin Tor. Kael'thas Sunstrider abandoned his membership to pursue other methods to save his people from the deprivations of magic withdrawal after the destruction of the Sunwell. At the time of his membership Jaina was a teenage apprentice and Kael fell in love with her but Jaina only had eyes for Arthas Menethil (why would she want a highelf, not even the same species). Aethas Sunreaver became a member of the Kirin Tor some time after this as he and his Sunreavers aided in the fight against the Lich King, he helped Jaina (no longer an apprentice) acquire leadership of the Kirin Tor but was later ousted by Jaina when she believed that his Sunreavers had helped steal the Divine bell from Darnassus.

The matter of death and all things undead. Kael'thas is most likely dead, dead as dead can get. After being defeated in Tempest Keep, emphasis on 'defeated', he makes a reappearance in Magister's Terrace. After a successful Tempest Keep, back in Shattrath City when Ad'al's thought invade your mind etc etc. Kael'thas yells ... your monkeys failed to finish the job, Naaru! Beaten but alive... (he mocks those who came for mere trinkets but left without finishing him off). So, still alive but very sickly and with not so many firey orbs he reappears in Magister's Terrace where he is finally killed, I'm pretty sure a severed head means dead. Aethas Sunreaver on the other hand has had no deaths on record. Jaina imprisoned him in the Violet Hold where he was rescued by Rommath and fled back to Silvermoon, then under the command of Lor'themar he reappears on Isle of Thunder in Pandaria along with his Sunreavers. Aethas being uncomfortable at the sight of Jaina is likely a reference to her having removed him from his position in the Kirin Tor and imprisoning him for his supposed involvement with the Divine Bell theft. Wounded pride? Embarassment? who knows, maybe he secretly wants to smash her in her pretty face. I would.

Felo'melorn - the weapon of choice. Once belonging to Dath'remar Sunstrider it was a family heirloom of the Sunstrider line but was broken. Kael'thas finds felo'melorn and reforges it with 'magic, hatred and a burning need of revenge'. Now a fire mage's dream weapon Kael uses it to Battle the Lich King (the original one - Ner'zul) along side his rival for Jaina's affection Arthas and his new buddy Illidan. Long story short - Arthas betrays everything he loves for vengeance. Kael clashes with Arthas, however, he fails against Frostmorne and falls back. Illidan then clashes with Arthas and is grievously wounded. Kael & Vashj take a beaten and bloody Illidan back to Outland and nothing more is seen of Felo'melorn. It was assumed Kael took it with him when he fled to Outland, however, it does not appear on loot tables from Tempest Keep or Magister's Terrace so it can also be assumed that he lost his precious blade in Icecrown.

So, many years later Aethas Sunreaver knows the whereabouts of Felo'melorn. This might seem suspicious but remember he was a mage (they are in love with all things magical), he was an active member of the Kirin'Tor, participated in and knew many of the bloody and sordid details of the conflict in Icecrown against Arthas/Lich King, he knew Jaina personally and professionally, is a blood elf and has a vested interest in saving face in light of Kael'thas' history and betrayal.
His only interest in recovering Felo'melorn seems only to get him reinstated with the Kirin Tor or at least being allowed back in Dalaran. If he felt he had any claim to it (if he was Kael'thas Sunstrider in disguise he most certainly would) he shows no sign of it, so he leaves this most desired fire mage weapon of choice in MY capable hands.

Lyandra Sunstrider. Who is she? So much in a name... Sunstrider. Not much is known of her but she is clearly a relative/descendant of the Sunstrider line. Lyandra is a mage and apparently goes in search of Felo'melorn, after all it's not just the ultimate fire mage toy it is her birthright too. Lyandra's hunt for Felo'melorn gets her heart's desire but at a cost. She gets to wield her family heirloom but she becomes an undead under the Lich Kings control in the process. I guess dreams do come true.

In conclusion and of course my opinion (feel free to disagree) Aethas Sunreaver is an all round good guy caught up in a world of turmoil and grief and looking for a place to call home and a purpose in life (as much as a Warcraft npc has one). Although he seems to prefer to hide his face and wear a seriously outdated transmog set he seems legit and has no significant connection to Kael'thas Sunstrider apart from a name similarity. He could have bad acne scaring but that's no reason to assume he has anything to do with a crazy high-elf who wants his master Kil'jaeden to grant him power and consume all.

Then there's me. A new chapter in the History of Felo'melorn. I probably have more in common with Lyandra than Kael'thas does to Aethas. My quest to get my weapon of choice also takes me to Icecrown. I face the Lich King and am challenged to be a better mage than the one who wields it. I destroy Lyandra in my quest to acquire it. Lyandra Sunstrider had a more legitimate claim to it than I but since I have proven to be more ruthless, depraved and desperate it is now MINE. Plus I am undead, ha... the irony.
