This may be a surprise: Soloed as an undead holy priest. It took me 3 attempts.

My stats during the fight were:
8571 health
10020 mana
230 mp5 (mana per 5 seconds) inside the 5-second rule
636 mp5 outside the 5-second rule
822 bonus damage
2252 bonus healing
1630 armor

My gear is pretty good. I don't think I could have done it with much worse gear. I also had some consumable buffs on (Elixir of Healing Power and Golden Fish Sticks).

This was my spec: 20/41/0.

My strategy was to keep Shadow Word: Pain and Touch of Weakness up the whole time while "tanking" him the best I could. Inner Fire wasn't much use since he got 20 hits on me way too fast for it to be mana-efficient to recast it. Well, maybe not. I'm not sure. Anyway, I didn't keep Inner Fire up.

I didn't use Power Word: Shield (except to prevent dazing when initially running to my spot) because it costs too much mana and he'd break it in one hit anyway.

I kept myself alive mainly with rank 1 Greater Heal and top rank Renew, because of their mana-efficiency. Whenever I was at about half health, I'd use top rank Greater Heal to catch up, and if I was close to death, Prayer of Mending (one charge of which is actually more mana-efficient than a Flash Heal at my +healing, believe-it-or-not) and top rank Greater Heal after.

To keep my mana up, I used my Earring of Soulful Meditation on cooldown and Shadowfiend twice. On my winning attempt, I found Super Mana Potions weren't necessary, but I'm sure they would have been if my gear wasn't as good as it was. You may end up having to chug potions if you attempt this with worse gear.

On my first attempt, all was going well until he started giving me Mortal Wound, which is a stacking physical debuff which decreases healing by 5% per stack. I found I could get rid of it and prevent it from stacking too high by casting Psychic Scream on cooldown. For this to be safe and not pull respawns from where he starts, I had to fight him on a spikey rocky thing pretty far north of where he spawns. It seems dangerous, but his "knockback" ability just knocks you vertically and can't knock you off to your death.

It's tricky, but doable as a holy priest. I'm not sure about shadow. I don't think I can do the quest again as shadow to test it out, though. Good luck, holy priests, and don't be too discouraged about your class' weaknesses! Honestly, I didn't think this would be possible when I read the quest or spawned him the first time. A clever priest is a powerful thing.

Soloed as a Kara geared Beast Master Hunter. Kept a heal on pet at all times. If it looked like my pet was getting low on health, I tossed a freeze trap under Thuk's feet and healed up my pet while he was frozen. This was also a good time to bandage up. Recommend having Aspect of the Viper up as it is a long fight and you don't want to run out of mana. He didn't seem to be immune to anything I threw his way.

Attempted to solo as a 70 mm hunter in pre-kara blues and a few epics...failed miserably....twice. Just didnt have the stamina. Got him to around 80% and the pet died. That was it. All attention on me. If your gear is crap, bring a healer. He hits hard!

I did him solo today as balance (mostly t6 healing gear), hes easy as balance, everytime u get low, just use cyclone and top urself up, i only had to heal myself 2 times;) Free kill really...

He only has 76846 health points, so he's quite easy to solo at level 80.
