These are excellent mobs to farm for Motes of Shadow. They have low HP and low AC, and thus die very quickly. The droprate of motes is lower than in other places, but you should be able to kill them quickly.

Edit: Note that the droprate has been nerfed, so there may be better places to farm motes now.

Great for not only motes of shadow, but for netherweave as well. 37% drop rate or so and relative ease of kill....kill 2 birds with one stone.

These guys don't actually heal you after you kill them; they cast pain spike on you which takes away 500 health, but is a temporary effect. After combat the health removed by pain spike is refunded in the form of a 5 second healing over time.

And the drop rate for motes of shadow seems to have been lowered in the 2.1 patch, but these guys still do drop them.

i farmed these mobs for about 1hr and got 2 primal shadows, and got 5 stacks of netherweave. defenatly the best area i have found so far to farm netherweave. o and the crystal powder samples have a nice drop rate from these mobs.

Hits normal damage for 130-150ish / hit
Furthermore they have 2 special attacks:
First is "Mind Sear" - similar to a priests Mind Flay - 3 ticks of shadow damage, interruptable with pummel and similar effect - probably silence spells too. the level 66 ons do around 325 dmg/tick to me as a lvl 65 warrior w/o any shadow resistance. The 65 ones hit for around 280/tick.
Second special attack is the "Pain Spike" which hits for up to a bit less than 520-580ish shadow damage. After being hit by Pain Spike you'll recieve a buff that gives you back the damage taken in 5 ticks over 5 seconds.

Effectively Pain Spike isn't an issue when fighting, unless you are so low on hp that it will kill you to lose the 5-600 hp for 5 seconds.

As of right now I've gotten 7 motes in 10 kills. and around 10 netherweave cloth

Very nice mob to grind.

Drops Oshu'gun Crystal Powder Sample, Mote of Shadow, Silver, AND Netherweave Cloth.

I killed about 35-40 mobs and looted 14 Motes of Shadow, 50 Netherweave Cloth, and 16 Powder Samples (did not count how much money I looted though).

I farm Motes of Shadow on these guys with no problem at all. After 1 hour I have about 30-40 Motes and that was 3 weeks ago (AFK for a few weeks atm). As others have said they are easy to kill and their repop time is very short, yet I have never spent more than 10 seconds waiting for one to repop due to the amount of them around the uber crystal. And they drop Osh'gun Crystal!

These mobs are extraordinarily easy to farm and well worth the effort for the loot. This is especially true of dot-based classes. I was farming with a shadow priest with barely 1100 shadow damage. The mobs were dead just after VT quit ticking.

I made an hour-long test circuit (with the Halaa buff) to see what the benefits would be. Unfortunately, I was competing off-and-on with a few other players, including a mage, an opposite faction warlock who coexisted, and a botting hunter who was eventually killed by the otherwise benign warlock. I also had about 5-10 minutes of downtime from being repeatedly double-teamed by a BM hunter and a warrior. So, it's a highly populated area and you'll probably have some PVP to deal with.

Despite all this, I got 40 motes of shadow, 5.5 stacks of netherweave cloth, a few greens, and about 15g from the silver the mobs drop.

As a shadow priest spec'd into spirit tap, I didn't drink a single time. Keep in mind that I was spamming shield on myself and was pulling 3-4 mobs at a time. When I needed mana I popped my shadowfiend on one of the mobs and dotted it by consuming inner focus.

I also did a farming test today. One hour grinding nothing but those mobs on a PvE server as a 70 Combat Rogue.

After selling gray items and repairing, I had come away with:

~25g
55 Motes of Shadow
86 Netherweave Cloth

Assuming 25g per Primal Shadow (seems to be the going price on my server), I therefore ended up with over 150g worth of mats for one hour. There was some competition for the mobs but it wasn't overwhelming. As the poster above surmised, DoT-based classes -- Shadow Priest and Warlock -- are quite probably exceptional at farming those, since the mobs are a bit spread out. Being able to attain decent Shadow resistance through self-buffs might also help.

Edit: Here's a quick estimate of the Mote of Shadow drop rate. At best, my killing speed must have been 4 Voidspawns a minute, for a total of 240 mobs killed during the hour. This makes the drop rate approximately 23%, although some Voidspawns did drop 2 motes.

It's nice for shadoweave tailors. Their drop rate of Mote of Shadow isn't excellent, but it is hard to find something better. But there's a great thing - Voidspawns very often drop 1-3 Netherweave Cloth. Just go around Oshu'gun - no waiting for respawn and two kinds of mats for Shadowcloth!

Anyone know if the drop rate of Motes of Shadow was yet again nerfed in 2.3.2? I've been farming these things for 30 minutes and have looted 4 Motes of Shadow.

Truley easy grind, area is easy on the eyes (not to gloomy, nice and bright) Drops are as listed in comments above (Mote of Shadow, Netherweave, silver a decent greens)

I also did a 1 hour test with about 5-6 others out there farming aswell and my stats are close to the others. I'm a 70 Rogue with 10004 hp and had to use bandages 2 times as i ran though with out healing or sitting, each kill took anywhere from 5-10 sec.

Gold: 26g 8s (after selling greys)
Motes of Shadow: 39
Netherweave: 101
Greens: 3
Gems: 1 Shadow Draenite
Blues: Leggings of the sly
Crystal Powders: 19

all in all well worth the hour i spent there, i will be returning to say the least.

i farm these mobs on a regular basis for cloth and motes of shadow in the last few days i have gotten a few nice patterns 1 epic pattern bracers of the green fortress and a pattern for the mana injecter both within 2 days of each other. net worth on my server for around 1000g for a cpl hrs. of farming there

Been farming these for a few hours now. Taking the fact that they drop 1-2 motes into consideration I've gotten 129 motes of shadow out of 461 kills. That amounts to 0.2798 motes of shadow per kill. Which does not mean 27.98% droprate, but rather 27.98% chance to get one mote of shadow per kill.

The motes that drop are sufficient enough for about 2 primals in about 30 minutes. I currently farm them for the enchant cloak chants, its a pain sometimes especially during peak server hours where you can often see 3-4 people farming these for the same reasons. But the drop rate is above average in my opinion.

Im not entirely sure but I get the feeling, from farming these for my Shadow Resistance gear, I feel that the drop rate on the Motes of Shadow has been reduced. I don't have any solid evidence to prove this but I feel it has since the latest patch (2.4.3).

30% Drop for Mote of shadow is fail. It's way lower, tbh. I killed like 40 and I got 9. Sadness.

Just farmed these for 14 Primal Shadow needed to craft the 3 piece shadesteel set for transmog, was just circling around killing them was another person there for the first 20 mins or so but didnt really slow my farming down as most of the time is spent flying between them not actually killing and looting.

Got 10 motes in approximatly 5 minutes (give or take) and took 1:08:30 to get the 14 primals (141 motes) I needed.

got 17g worth of vendor trash 6 greens (only one transmog worthy which will bring my total gold for the hour up but should be seen as a bonus not a reason to farm here!) looking at about 5g of dust on each so 30g. 394 netherweave cloth 30s-75s a piece accouring to undermine journal 118g-195g and the motes them selves are 25-35g each average 350g-490g

so for an hour farming selling this lot would net you 515-732g

which isn't the worst but you can do alot better farming dungeons or mining or herbing, so if the option is available to you should farm these on the ah :P but sadly my dead realm didn't have any
