At the release of Lich King, temporary weapon enhancements (oils & stones) worked on items all the way to those requiring level 80 (I applied it to Totemic Purification Rod with no problems), this was changed by Blizzard within weeks of release. After much experimenting I found that (at version 3.0.9) the current cut off for using these is any weapon with item value of 162 (as rated in the Armory). Any weapon at or above 166 will alert the user that the attempt failed but will not consume the object. I was able to apply oil to a Levitating Dagger (BOE green) which requires level 75 to use.

Sharpening stones are just awesome for sub rogues even for combat ones a whole lot better than poisons. Let's do some theorycrafting, +6 damage means 6 X 330% = 20 damage increase in ambush, 40 when crits. Let's say you use instant poison II (req 28) that does 21-25 + 0.1 X 200 ap = 41-45 damge 20% of the time, that means and additional 43/5 = 8.6 weapon damage.
If the white damage if 25 % of the total dps and ambush is 50%, overall, the poisons will add another 25% X 8.6/2 dps ~= 1 more dps (if weapon_speed = 2) while the sharpened weapon will add 50% X 30 = 15 more dps (if improved ambush), not even counting that extra damage for melee attacks.
So we're talking about 14 dps difference, that's a huge difference.
Conclusion: use stones instead of poisons for sub leveling or whatever. Idk if the poisons can proc from BS or ambush (though I'm sure they proc from SS), but even if they do the improved weapon damage will always be much better than poison flat extra damage for these strikes.
I'd use poisons on offhand though...

In my opinion, you should always use items like these. Weapon oil, sharpening stones etc. They are extremely easy to make, and reasonably cheap on the auction house, and they give such an extreme boost.
