The direct comparison across the available options:

Tank Neck Showdown

The first thing that should stand out is that the Elementium Guardian has a socket whereas none of the others do. The Darkhowl Amulet is the most direct comparison with it trading +61 Dodge rating for -20 Strength, -11 Expertise, and the socket. The real comparison in my mind would be between the JC necklace and the one from the Justice Point vendor. It is kind of rough. All those JP gives you +20 Strength, +112 Mastery, and +5 Dodge vs 96 Expertise and a blue socket with a +10 Hit rating bonus. Tossing in a Sovereign Demonseye brings the comparison down to +112 Mastery, +5 Dodge vs +96 Expertise, +30 Stamina, +10 Hit rating, which is closer to being in the same ballpark as before.

In my personal opinion though, I would prefer going with the Elementium Guardian. Unlike the Elementium Moebius Band (another JC pattern), the Guardian has no reputation reward analog. Even if it ends up costing 4000g-5000g on the AH, I think most of us would prefer that to the ~18 heroic boss kills necessary to get enough JP to purchase the Lustrous Eye.

This necklace is fantastic for tanks for several reasons. #1 being the blue socket with +10 hit bonus. You have the option of straight blue stam, purple parry/stam or green mastery/stam depending upon your needs. You can reforge the expertise as needed, and have it available as your gear scales.

There are also so many other things that you can use your valor point on that have a more dramatic upgrade.

Don't forget Vengeance and how is scales with stamina.

I found it definitely worth the $$ I spent on it.

I like this item. If you can farm your own mats, or have enough gold for the earths, its worth crafting. I checked the other options and found this worked best for me as a DK tank. Per EJ, DK should never be statting for parry anyhow (stat for Str instead for AP and Parry) - and the gem makes it easy to qualify and forget about your meta (or just go for straight stam if needed). Stat for 2:3 ratio parry/dodge as a DK (and try for 35% avoidance, which at our L85 ilevel 346-359 isnt easy to get to right now, not like endgame wrath at least was).

Note the high Str on the neck. So good for DKs - and while yes, mastery is an important stat. The difference is like 2% on the damage shield - no loss on a 10sec rotation imo. If you have the space to sac some expertise (ie, enemy chance to dodge is already near 0% on skully target) consider reforging for some added hit, or crit, or even mastery.

I got all three plate tank classes geared in 346 plus a jewelcrafter at max skill and i never considered crafting this item.

Why?

The materials are not worth it. Imo all of the jewelcrafting 346 items are too expansive since you can only get one token per day, so there's no way to just "farm" the materials and its very very easy to get equally good necklaces and rings in cataclysm.

For Prot Paladins Acorn of the Daughter Tree is a much better neck, and can be gotten just for being Revered with Guardians of Hyjal, which you should be by the time you complete that starting zone.
